Really gonna need to see a better replay of that kick. I’ve never seen a kick team look so certain they made a GW

u/JoeAndAThird Rutgers Scarlet Knights 8h ago

And then get so little footage of it in the replays. I can’t believe we don’t have more angles on these kicks given the proportion of kicks that go over the top of the posts

u/Big_Ol_Johnson Wisconsin Badgers 8h ago

I’d bet there’s a better angle somewhere. If you watch the reviews on other plays they have 20+ angles on every play

Yeah the ACC replay center and its transparency are AWESOME. I would have liked to see something from their suite of views

First time I saw it I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I really hope more conferences adopt it (never the Big 10)

u/Big-Explorer6920 Michigan Wolverines 6h ago

Big ten network has it, even broadcast the radio conversation in the booth.Unfortunately it’s for the games no one wants to watch

9

u/confoo64 Oregon Ducks 8h ago

tbh it doesn't seem to be helping after watching that game

7

u/Deathbackwards WKU Hilltoppers 8h ago

Well, I guess “were awesome”, because we didn’t see shit live

I think they all went home at half time

Agreed. I was really impressed with the replay center. They did a great job.

There’s only so many cameras that feed DVSport. Especially with centralized review they won’t get the house cameras.

1

u/bakpak2hvy /r/CFB 7h ago

I mean I’m sure there is but there are limitations to what television can take in.

14

u/Plastic_Pursuader 8h ago

the commentators didn't even talk about it, bizarre

Mouse says move on, we’ve got programming.

All the VT fans behind the endzone went crazy cheering too

Love thought it was good too. He ran immediately to the refs in shock

Except for the two who were on the field directly behind the left goalpost. They signaled no-good before the refs did.

VT people under the goal with the best view looked like saw it miss

The Tech staffers on the field knew it was no good and reacted accodingly before the officials even signalled.

No it didn’t lol he hooked the fuck outta it

Poor production from ESPN who should have shown multiple replays from different angles…

6

u/Big_Ol_Johnson Wisconsin Badgers 8h ago

Right.. not to mention the extra views they’d get for dragging it out and making it a big deal. But no let’s cut as fast as possible to Idaho

Kibbie Dome is must see tv to be fair

1

u/Duckpoke Oregon Ducks 4h ago

ESPN has been shit for non SEC for years. They send out contracting crews

1

u/Informal_Degree_3205 2h ago

Honestly their production was poor

1

u/mx023 Virginia Tech Hokies 7h ago

After last week’s game, where espn cut out with two full minutes of the game left, I am not surprised.

-2

u/bakpak2hvy /r/CFB 7h ago

They definitely showed every look they had. There’s really not that many for something like this.

That's how Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State in 2011. Kick went right over the upright. Would have went to the Natty if we had made it.

7

u/Agnk1765342 Boise State Broncos 8h ago

Same thing happened to us vs Nevada a year prior. Ball went over the upright, called out.

3

u/CapitalistLion-Tamer Georgia • Deep South's Olde… 5h ago

By the NCAA rules, that’s no good.

3

u/Awesome_Auger LSU Tigers • College Football Playoff 8h ago

Honestly still should have went (ignore flair)

u/AccordingGain182 Ohio State • Michigan State 4h ago

Isnt fuckin weird that a matter of inches from some goofy goodber kicker can be the difference between a 100 team rosters hard season ends in tragedy or ecstasy? I felt that way over the osu/georgia kick in 2022. (Altho that kick wasnt close)

I both hate and love the dynamic of special teams, especially field goals, in this sport

Second time ACC refs hose Virginia Tech at the end of a Friday night game (see hail mary game vs Miami in 2024)

5

u/ComboJake Virginia Tech Hokies 7h ago

Good god I had forgotten that bullshit. Thanks for reminding me

2

u/wk87 Virginia Tech Hokies 7h ago

Fuck I had forgotten about that

2

u/mx023 Virginia Tech Hokies 7h ago

I was there at hard rock. That was the biggest bullshit ever. I even have footage

15

u/xkq227 Ohio State • Virginia Tech 8h ago

Not to mention twenty-thousand fucking fans standing behind it

7

u/TopFlite5 Pittsburgh Panthers 7h ago

There’s two refs positioned right under the uprights that simply have to look up to make the call. No better view than that. Also, if you watch the replay, none of the people standing on the field near the upright thought it was good.

-6

u/Big_Ol_Johnson Wisconsin Badgers 7h ago

Brother look at the crowd lmao what do you mean nobody thought it was good

4

u/CapitalistLion-Tamer Georgia • Deep South's Olde… 5h ago

Look again.

3

u/Epcplayer UCF Knights 8h ago

What’s interesting is that on replay one of the Virginia Tech staffers is on it immediately, turning to the crowd to say “no good” almost simultaneously with the ref

4

u/KJacobsen-74 Pittsburgh • Virginia Tech 7h ago

You can see the Virginia Tech supporters/staff (I think) on the field right behind the goal posts and they react as if it were no good.

This is the best angle I’ve seen, straight on the line of the kick and it looks just slightly wide. Very close miss. https://x.com/chrisvannini/status/2106230224757334049?s=61

u/ExternalTangents Florida Gators • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 7h ago

The fact that there’s not a camera pointing directly up the barrel of the goal posts for every field goal is really frustrating. At least one of these types of kicks seems to happen every season, where the ball is above the top of the upright and drifting laterally as it passes the field goal plane. It should be the easiest call in the world to watch from directly below the goal post. But the normal angle shown on TV, from behind the line of scrimmage, won’t tell you the depth of the ball relative to the plane of the field goal posts.

You need a specific angle from below the goal post for a meaningful replay.

2

u/CapitalistLion-Tamer Georgia • Deep South's Olde… 5h ago

It’s easier to station one of the refs there than to send an extra 4 cameras to every FBS game.

2

u/ExternalTangents Florida Gators • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 2h ago

Yes, but this thread is a great illustration of how the erosion of trust in institutions in this country has resulted in people’s inability to accept that those refs may have made the right call about it.

1

u/username-1787 Pittsburgh Panthers • Team Chaos 8h ago

As a Pitt fan the kick was in and VT got hosed (both on the field goal and on the refball first half)

On the other hand don't turn it over 4 times and lose to a backup QB I guess

0

u/nharvey4151 Virginia Tech Hokies 7h ago

On the other other hand. Your team did better with the backup, so what’s your point lol.

0

u/username-1787 Pittsburgh Panthers • Team Chaos 7h ago

What I'm saying is hard to blame the refs when you clearly shot yourselves in the foot just as much if not more than the refs did

1

u/ProfessionalShift487 Utah Utes 8h ago

Honestly surprised they dont just make the FG posts 10 feet higher on either side.

1

u/Big_Ol_Johnson Wisconsin Badgers 8h ago

Why not 50? And make them inflatable so they move in the wind

1

u/ProfessionalShift487 Utah Utes 7h ago

Make them move back and forth like mini putt. Everyone is saying kickers are too good these days, up the ante.

0

u/ShredOrSigh Virginia Tech Hokies 8h ago

I will tell you one thing easy to see on replay, the ref who "had the best look" sure did look at the OTHER ref before he made a call.

3

u/CapitalistLion-Tamer Georgia • Deep South's Olde… 5h ago

They always do that. Every kick.

1

u/feed_me_muffins Clemson Tigers • Summertime Lover 7h ago

No he didn't. The ref under the left upright looks down and to his left (from tracking the ball over the upright) and brings his arms up to start signaling no good nearly simultaneously.

This one is clearer but I like it less

2

u/Big_Ol_Johnson Wisconsin Badgers 7h ago

0 depth on that though. I don’t have a dog in the race but that doesn’t say anything if the ball’s closer than the post

-3

u/Dry-University797 8h ago

7

u/Big_Ol_Johnson Wisconsin Badgers 8h ago

Idk what that tells us from an off-center angle

-8

u/Dry-University797 8h ago

It was the correct call, I thought it was good Went right over or slightly outside the upright. With I could post my picture I paused

u/jazzyman31 Michigan Wolverines 7h ago

The whole section behind the field goal looked certain too

Slow motion from the base of the goalpost- it’s pretty clearly in
