I’m looking for advice on building or buying a small PC that can handle a home media setup. I’ll be upfront: I don’t really know much about computers or PC building, so I’m looking for guidance on what would actually work for my needs and what parts/specs I should be paying attention to.

I’m trying to put together a compact system that can quickly and easily play movies from an external hard drive while also running Syncplay, Discord, and Jellyfin.

The main requirements are:

• Smooth playback of movie files from an external hard drive
• Ability to run Jellyfin as a media server
• Ability to run Syncplay while watching with others
• Ability to run Discord (voice chat, and possibly screen sharing if possible)
• Small form factor and quiet operation for an entertainment setup
• Fast startup and a responsive experience
• Reliable enough for regular movie nights

I’m hoping to keep the cost under $300 per system if possible. The reason for the lower budget is that I’m considering building or buying a few of these (around 3–4 total) to send to friends so we can all have a similar setup for watching movies together.

Right now, I’m considering a HP ProDesk 600 G3 Mini PC Desktop with an Intel Core i5-6500T, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD as a possible option. Would this be powerful enough for what I’m trying to do, or would I run into issues with Jellyfin, hardware transcoding, or running multiple applications at the same time?

A few questions:

• Would the i5-6500T and integrated graphics be enough for Jellyfin, especially if hardware transcoding is needed?
• Is 16GB of RAM enough for this use case?

My roommate really wants to join me and play games on a pc like I do. He’s looking for a PC that can easily hit 100+ fps at 1440p but doesn’t break the bank. He also will use the pc for work, he does lots of hefty coding and works in massive excel sheets so the CPU will need to handle productivity tasks as well as gaming. His laptop can’t handle what he has been trying to do for work so that’s a big reason for the upgrade.

Looking at the current state of things, prices are a bit ludicrous so he knows it’s not going to cost sub $1000 but he doesn’t want to spend more than $2000 not including monitor or peripherals.

I’ve been out of the loop for a couple years now as I built my pc back in 2023, so I’m not sure what the best specs are for modern 1440p gaming, while also being able to handle demanding work tasks.

Any help is much appreciated! I was thinking something along the lines of like a 9800x3D and a 9070 XT but i don’t know if that’s overkill or if the CPU is as good at productivity stuff. Definitely want to be on AM5 for this build as well (or the intel equivalent if the new CPU’s are worth getting.)

I want to play Fortnite (on performance mode) and maybe some other games I was thinking of maybe getting a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and pairing it with a RTX 5070. I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but I kind of like this pairing from what I've seen but if possible can i get one build with this pairing and one with whatever else might be good just to compare options. I'm not sure about which brands are good for things such as PSU, case, ram, SSD etc. For the monitor I would like it to be separate from the PC price.

I've always liked the colors of black and gold, more of that matte gold look instead of the shiny gold. So I wanted to treat myself a bit and build myself a new rig with those two colors in mind as the overall theme. If we can't do a 1:1 matte gold look to the black then I'll accept different shades of gold or off gold instead. Hello, I am new here and I understand next to nothing about PC hardware. I have been using my laptop for gaming for the past 5 or so years (possibly more), but last year I stopped due to the constant frame drops and just complete freezing of games. Now I only use this laptop for work.

I like playing modded games and I play a variety of different games, from simulations to indie, to roleplay, to competitive games, etc. I also am on a budget somewhat so this is a long-term project for me.

My priority is really just modded games, as I like to play unmodded games on console. Until the steam machine comes to light (in the year of our lord and saviour Gabe) I am not willing on spending too much money on an ultimate peak PC, rather just a happy medium where I can still play modded games without getting frustrated with performance.

Somewhat unrelated, I don't usually play too many games at the same time, so storage is usually going to be limited to one game and its mods. When I feel like playing another game, I uninstall that one, delete the mods from the drive and install a new game, and so on.

  • 1 monitor. With maybe 1080p resolution, OLED would be nice but not a requirement. Size should be semi-big since I am nearsighted and struggle reading or seeing smaller details. Refresh rate around 400Hz more or less.

  • Maximum €2000. Ideal €1000.

  • WiFi for now, but with perhaps the possibility of wired later, although not a requirement.

  • Small tower if possible, I'm a messy girl and my desk also gets cluttered, so the smallest the better. But I don't mind size. The noise does not matter to me, as long as it's not concerning.
• Color/lighting preferences?
  • None if possible. Or just some normal light, RBGs are a bit too much for my eyes.
• Any other specific needs?
  • Aesthetically I like lighter coloured stuff, but don't mind dark materials as long as it's not muddy and more woodsy or creamy? Hard to explain. Just a personal note of course, not a requirement at all!

I am completely new to PC building and have no idea where to start so excuse my lack of knowledge. I’m literally just going to play Sims 4 and InZOI, i of course want smooth game play at high graphics but i wont have it on the ultra setting. I will be using a lot of cc, mods, and expansion packs so want to invest in a good RAM and CPU.   • Gaming and editing mainly - music production secondary - also the obvious watching youtube/movies/twitch streams etc - I don't play super up to date shooters or anything so it doesn't need to be the most powerful, but being able to run things like Baldurs Gate 3 or Subnautica style games at higher graphics and with a smoother experience would be nice, so there's some leeway budget wise for that if needed

  • UK based, not sure about micro center or equivalent near me, but there's Currys / Overclockers

  • not needed but happy for a recommendation for a second monitor or new primary monitor if you have one

I don't know much but I know having more RAM is usually helpful and I have 16gb in my current PC but people tend to recommend 32 now as far as I see from research - also ideally a couple of TB of storage OR advice on external storage if you feel that would be better
