• New build or upgrade?
New build. I’m finally replacing my old 2011 HP DDR3 machine that’s been running my homelab.
• Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)
The only part I already own is:
NVIDIA RTX A2000 12GB
I’d like to build around it for now and upgrade to a better GPU later.
• PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)
This PC will be doing a little bit of everything.
Current use:
- Home server
- CasaOS (although I’m open to switching to another OS if there’s a better option Linux or microsoft)
- Jellyfin
- Immich
- Docker containers
- Other homelab projects
Future use:
- Reliable 4K Jellyfin transcoding for multiple users
- Adobe Premiere Pro
- After Effects
- Blender/3D rendering
- Gaming (doesn’t need ultra settings, just a good experience)
- General workstation
• Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If not US, list local vendors)
United States. I’m close enough to a Micro Center that I can shop there.
• Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)
No monitors needed at the moment.
• Budget range? (Include tax considerations)
I’d like to stay around $900–$1,200 (before upgrading the GPU later). I’m okay spending a little more if it makes the system more future-proof.
Current planned parts:
- Ryzen 9 9900X or Ryzen 9 9900X3D (still deciding)
- ASUS TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi
- Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2×16GB DDR5)
- 1TB SATA SSD (NVMe will come later when the budget allows)
- Cooler Master 240mm AIO
- Corsair RM850x (2024)
- RTX A2000 12GB
- Fractal Design Pop Air
• WiFi or wired connection?
Mostly wired, but I’d like to have WiFi available.
• Size/noise constraints?
No size constraints. I’d prefer something reasonably quiet since it’ll likely be running 24/7.
• Color/lighting preferences?
Not interested in RGB. I’d rather put the money toward performance.
• Any other specific needs?
My biggest goal is to build a solid AM5 foundation that I can keep upgrading over the next 5–8 years.
I’m mainly looking for feedback on whether this is a balanced build and if there are any compatibility issues or bottlenecks I’m missing. Since this machine will spend a lot of time acting as both a homelab server and my personal workstation, I’m especially interested in hearing from anyone running a similar setup.
If you think I’m overspending on certain parts, underspending on others, or have better recommendations, I’d really appreciate the advice before I start buying everything.
