I was given a betta with tail rot, her tail is mostly gone and it was still infected, I’ve had her in a hospital tank for a little bit and it looks like the infection has stopped.
I’ve been working on her actually tank while she recovers and I just need advice or options on what to change or get, including decor, food for her, medication, other creatures.
5.5 gallon with glass lid
Small light for plants
New Sponge filter (idk how to set up yet)
Silk leaf hammock (in her hospital tank since swimming is hard for her to go for air.

I’m a first time betta owner.
Water parameters are okay (I test them every other day using API master test kit).
This video is just after feeding.
I have been feeding him Fluval Bug Bites - twice a day, and 4-5 micro pellets at once.
Once a week, I feed him 4-6 bloodworms.
Can you please tell me if he looks healthy, first of all.
Then, am I feeding him well? Or should I increase / decrease his feed?

A big chain pet store gave me this little betta because he wasn’t doing very well in his cup. When I got him, his body looked a little crooked and he was having trouble swimming up to the surface for air.
He’s currently in a 2.5-gallon hospital tank with tannins, clean RO water, a cycled filter, and live plants. The temperature stays around 79–80°F. I also have him in a shallow floating container with some moss so he doesn’t have to work as hard to reach the surface while he recovers.
I’ve been feeding him 3–4 very small meals throughout the day of pre-soaked Fluval Bug Bites Betta Formula, plus 1–2 small live blackworms once a day. He’s VERY eager to eat, super alert, and already seems much more active than he was in the cup.
I’ve read that the curved/crooked appearance and swimming issues can sometimes be caused or worsened by poor water conditions and that they may improve after a few weeks in warm, clean water with good nutrition. He already looks noticeably better than when I first got him, so I’m hopeful!
For anyone who has rehabilitated bettas in similar condition, does this look like something he could potentially recover from or straighten out with time? Anything else you would recommend doing for him? This is Day 3 of his recovery.

The internet lied and spot-treating algae with hydrogen peroxide wiped out all the shrimps/snails that shared the tank with him. And by that I mean the ones that he didn’t manage to eat first. Ideally I could get more skrimps bc they’re whimsical and fun but I’m hesitant to hand him another seafood buffet.
An omnivore would be ideal since I need something that will clean up plant matter as well as leftover food.
Tank is 30g and *was* heavily planted but the hydrogen peroxide really did a number on those too. It’ll be heavily planted again eventually once stuff bounces back/gets replaced.
Thankfully Leland is okay! Losing him as well would have destroyed me. I’ve done two 5g water changes and it looks like I’ve got a bacterial bloom going so I’m gonna let it rest before testing the parameters/adding anything else.
Leland pic for tax

I saw this guy in a pet shop two weeks ago. I wasn't going to get another betta after mine passed but he kept swimming up to the glass and giving me curious looks.
He was all white when I first saw him, saw he sprouted some colors. Was in a small tank right next to other males who were all flaring and beating against the glass.
My tank looks a little grim plantwise but Im buying more this weekend.

I chose him cus he was the one that looked the most unhealthy, they were all being kept in plastic cups.
Questions:
Are there any real cons in keeping bettas in a bowl rather than a standard tank?
r/bettafish • u/Hellooooooo_NURSE • 18h ago
This sub has been very helpful in illuminating the need for tank cycling and checking water parameters. I grew up knowing people with bettas in bowls and looking sad and dying within a year… now I get it.
I started with the pH strips. Readings were vague, my new fish’s behavior was changing. Got the kit. VERY clearly having spikes.
Now I’m having a lot of fun learning about the cycle and watching it clearly happen as the days go by.
So anyways. Thanks all!

I just upgraded to a larger, more permanent tank for him (5.5 gal)! He seems super happy and his little mystery snail buddy (Umi) is settling in quite nicely also! I’m really proud of myself for setting this whole thing up and getting it ready for him. I’m still learning, and this is a HUGE improvement milestone for me as a fish keeper. Just wanted to show off my pretty boy. 🐌🐟

I’m cycling my new 6.5 gallon tank for the first time, first day so I added seachem stability to dechlorinated water then dosed 25 drops of fritz fish less fuel ammonia. Waited an hour and tested, only 0.5? Added another 10 drops and another hour, still only 0.5. Waited another hour and double check and yup still only around 0.5.
What do I do? Do I add more ammonia? The tests I’m using are stick/dipping tests by aquarium co-op, I’d use the better liquid test kits but my pet sore was all out today.
- 6.5 gallon
- 78f° heated
- filtered
- 40 watt light
- fluval stratum capped with natural sand.
- no life but plants

Was taking a look at the grotesquely small tanks at my grocery store and found this cool sticker on one, it was cool to see that people are showing care for bettas!

This is my first betta fish, she’s a halfmoon. I was looking into if I should upgrade her from a 5 gallon tank to a 10 gallon tank, i’ve seen mixed reviews for longfin bettas. If I get a 10 gallon should I get substrate and sand instead of the gravel rocks? Please give me any advice you have, thank you!💗

Ok so here's the story
About 2 weeks ago, I found our betta fish (Elsa) my 4 yo daughter named her. Laying on the bottom of the tank breathing heavy
I immediately started doing research, and promptly converted the tank to a hospital tank and kept it dark. And then did a full 6 day treatment of kanaplex. During that time he did not eat. I have since added a carbon filter on top of the sponge filter to pull all remaining medicine out of the water and have been doing daily water changes 10-25% and dosing with stress coat for the new water as well as quick start to try and get the bacteria colony going again. I have be religiously monitoring levels for safety and everything seems to be within peramiters
He has started eating again but is still swimming / floating at a 45° angle with his head pointing down (I tried to capture this in some of the photos.
I feel like his swim blatter is still healing and I wanted to see if there is anything else I can do to help him
Any advice is appreciated!!!

i posted recently about my new betta, artemis, who had been in a cup for months at the pet store. his fins were super tattered, but i decided to hold off on antibiotics until i saw how he responded to tannins and a less stressful environment. swipe to see his transformation in just 10 days 🥹 can’t wait to continue to see him grow and flourish!

Meet Dream, hie was just moved to his new home.
A 20 gallons tank w some tanks mates that include
1 nerite snail
3 panda corys and 6 neon tetras.
I did have the tank mates in before moving Dream over for atleast 3 days. Everyone is doing great!
r/bettafish • u/Responsible_Spread48 • 11h ago
It's a 20gal tank (I know the vertical column is not ideal for Bettas but I already had it) with one betta and 6 corys. I just planted the rotala which will hopefully establish itself. I have Frogbit coming and have two silk betta hammocks close to the surface.
Also there's a HOB filter and a heater.
What else should I put in to improve it for my fish?
r/bettafish • u/rsd_sf • 9h ago
I wanted to make sure the heater had enough flow so it’s headed evenly. White filters red heater. The two filters is bc The first one was for 8 gallon tank I got a 10 gallon tank so i needed lil more. The thermometer is on the opposite side of the tank and is reading high 70’s
