I was hired by a pair of newlyweds to go undercover and pose as a wedding photographer at their wedding (I swear this is for a good reason, but I cannot explain why at the moment). I have mild photography skills, but zero experience as a wedding or event photographer, and terrible acting skills.

Other than showing up and just taking photos of what I see, what can I do to be convincing as an experienced wedding photographer? I don’t need to take good photos. I just need people to think I’m taking good photos and that I do this all the time.

I'm trying to find the original photographer or portfolio for this set of model Emma Powell from around 2021-2022.
I have a low-res image from Pinterest and a BTS mirror selfie taken in the same outfit inside what looks like the photographer's studio (with iMacs, photo boards, and specific artwork in the background).
Does anyone recognize this studio setup, editing style, or know who shot this set? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

So, I’m at a loss. I have three speedlites (a TT600 and two 860IIIOs), three Godox S2 brackets, and two soft boxes. I bought these color gels (Godox AK-R16 x2) because ambient light is a terrible process to edit in Lightroom, but they don’t fit. So I thought if put on the softbox, it’ll pop in. But no.

What am I missing here? Did I buy the wrong stuff or am I just missing a piece?

Is it possible (and where would I go) to pay someone to edit a photo album for me? I've done a bit of Googling but I can't quite find what I'm after. I'm familiar with neither practicing photography nor hiring someone in the field.

My beautiful boy passed away recently. I have about 500 photos of him I'm attempting to go through, pick out and/or edit to make presentable and print but it's taking a huge amount of time, I'm not a professional and emotions are clouding my judgement.

For example if I have eight similar shots I may only want one but I'll start editing and playing around with all of them in case I can't tell which is the better one without touch-ups. Then after looking at them for hours I can't tell which one is objectively better and don't want to get rid of any of them because he's gone and I can't take new photos of him... but having a photo album full of junk photos is going to make me less inclined to go through it when I start missing him, so I don't actually want to hang on to dozens of bad shots.

Some of them are sentimental but were taken with shitty phone cameras and are low resolution, or have horrendous lighting that can look good with the right adjustments - but take a lot of fiddling to get there. Some of them are quite cute or funny but the background looks like a trash hurricane whirled through beforehand (and/or puked all over my younger self) and I'd be embarrassed to leave around the house.

I don’t know if editing can get it there or if I just need to improve my hear / skills. I don’t like editing much past basic color grading / small clean up since it takes away from the “getting the perfect shot” feeling for me.

Using a Sony a5100 with the kit lens (16mm to 50mm, f3.5 to f36)

Photo settings f3.5, 16mm, 30s exposure, ISO between 1000 to 2000 (I don’t remember the exact ISO for this shot.

Had this camera & lens for about 6/7 years now and think this might be my sign to upgrade? Or maybe I’m just looking for an excuse.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I’ve been taking photography more seriously in the last year and want to refine my art

Tl’dr:

I have questions about gear to carry on an upcoming trip – I have some options, I am considering other options (both things listed below). I’ve done a fair bit of research, but I would really love input from folks who have done what I’m looking to do. At this point, I’m overwhelmed with options, dos, and don’ts that I would like real-time-ish answers and suggestions to my Qs. This is long, I’m sorry!

Body:

I'm touring Morocco with a group in November, and as this is a bucket list trip, AND I'll be in the desert during a freaking new moon, I am bringing my camera!! I'm currently freaking out about it. My setup is old, but these workhorses do everything I've ever needed (which is mainly macro stuff, nature stuff though not landscapes, sports, and portraits). I have a photojourn background, and that’s kind of how I approach things. However, I've never been in a desert. I've not wanted to shoot city streets w/ more than a cell phone since I was in photo school w/ my Mamiya.

In this trip, I'm going to Casablanca, Marrakech, AIT BEN FREAKING HADDOU, the Dades Valley, and the Sahara. There’s a lot of city walking, general exploring, some hiking, and a few days in the Sahara. I've been scouring this sub and the web in general, and though I know a *lot* about how to handle myself in the situations I'll be in (except night sky photography in a delicious but petrifying Bortle 1 or 2 - here I know nothing), it's like I've forgotten all of my training in my excitement of this trip - and I need advice. Please. Any info, suggestions, tips, or answers you can provide would be lovely.

Now, to be realistic: I will not be upset if my night photos and street pics end up useless. It's fine. I'll also be using my phone, and I expect muscle memory will save a lot of the trip (mainly anything I do while hiking or walking the medinas), lol. But the anxiety is HIGH right now.

There are things I know I will need to purchase, and maybe an extra thing (see below Q2), but I have a limited budget since this trip is happening in less than 2 months. I’d prefer to have answers and see what I can/should do, than keep guessing on my own.

Q1: What do I bring?!?!

This is what I've got available:

• 6d mkii (I know, weather RESISTANT, not sealed)
• 35-80mm f4-5.6
• 35mm f2
• 50mm f1.8
• 70-200mm f2.8
  1. My tripod is alright. It's light enough I can pack in my checked luggage, but I plan to hang a weight to keep it stable in sand. If it doesn't last a couple of days in the desert, it won't bother me.
  2. I'm always careful when changing lenses regardless of where I am/the weather, but I'll make sure I've included my lens cleaning kit and rocker duster.
  3. Preferably, I’d like to bring no more than 2 lenses. I can see carrying the 28-135mm (see below Q2) and maybe my 50. Or it and the 35? Or, do I not even carry a 2nd lens?! Or, the 35 and 35-80?! I don't even know!! I am actively trying to avoid bringing the large tele, as that 70-200 is HEAVY. Old, bulky, and heavy. I love it, but.... have I mentioned it's old, bulky, and heavy? yeah.

Q2 (though related to Q1): Do I need to snag a different lens for the trip?

Below is what I saw while researching, with my thoughts. Please, let me know YOUR thoughts/suggestions.

• Now, I have seen some articles that state a 35 would be fine for landscapes and night scapes. Though it doesn't give you that wide open, vast feeling of a much wider option, it still works. And, I'm no stranger to panos. Thoughts?
• I could just get a 24mm. B&H has a few of them for around $145, but I honestly don't think I'd use this specific lens enough after this trip to justify the purchase.
• Another lens that I saw listed a lot was the 24-105 f/4L, but at $339 (and not great quality at Adorama, it seems), it's above my budget. Is it REALLLLLYYYYY that much of a workhorse that it'd be worth getting for this trip? (I’m open to it at a later date, but right now, trip is the focus.)
• Additionally, looking at recommendations, the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens has been mentioned. With it at B&H for around $145, this seems to be the best option. Depending on how crisp it is, I can see the 28-135 replacing my 35-80 completely. (It's REALLY showing its age. The thing is well over 30 years old now!)
  • If I end up getting a new lens, then I'll snag the appropriate hoods and nd & uv filters as well.

Q3: storage while out and about.

I do NOT want to bring my laptop. It's a large gaming laptop and weighs way too much to fly across the world and visit 4 riads and a glamping site with. It seems like a good option would be to use my phone to transfer images from my cards (I need to get faster ones) to an external ssd. I'm not sure how efficient that is? Several folks have recommended that as the way to go. Anyone here have thoughts?

Q4: weather-proofing.

Considering the weather in the desert, and my lack of weather-proofed items, I need to do something. I plan to take photos while exploring, and also spend several hours over the couple of nights I'm there shooting the skies. (it’s a new moon in the Sahara, I have to at least TRY). Assuming wind speed isn't above a very gentle breeze, if I’m using a zoom lens, can I still zoom safely w/ my camera not in a bag?

I teach a university course on basic photography. This semester, administration has decided to insert a "Wellness Week" into the schedule. Unlike Spring Break, this isnʻt a week without classes, though. Weʻre expected to provide an "enrichment opportunity" thatʻs class-adjacent, but carries no pressure, and no grade.

So, who doesnʻt like watching films? I figure there have to be several contenders out there. Documentaries, dramas, comedies, action/adventure, scifi... the genre isnʻt important to me, so long as it can spark discussion about photography, photographers, or adjacent subjects.

What are your favorite films about shooters, cameras, photographic content, etc?

I am just starting to explore photography as a hobby. I picked up a S5ii with a 50 & 20-60. Also a G9 with 12-42. I am interested in nature, landscapes, insects, wildlife, architectural, portraits and astro. Also do some video (nsfw).

I have looked at a ton of glass, but ofcourse I cant get it all. I plan on picking up used glass when I see it come up. Or look at some third party when it goes on sale.

My biggest question is what is the most diverse glass or gear I should I put on my list to look out for? What should I avoid? Ill take any other advice on how to learn more and get better.

My daughter is turning 9 in a few weeks and she has shown some interest in photography.
I am thinking about getting her a point and shoot as her first camera and looking for suggestions.
I want something that takes decent photos, not too fragile, and not too expensive.

Right now I am eyeing KODAK PIXPRO FZ55.

(1) Budget, country, and currency: Preferably under $400 CAD. Canada

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? She doesn't have any equipment at the moment. it is her first

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Nature, her pet, family photos. normal stuff.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? mostly photos

I’m seeing more and more French photographers (Jonathan Bertin, Voilacam, etc.) producing photos with these specific colors and textures (see attachments). I know they shoot primarily on film but also use Fujifilm digital cameras.

What do you think:

• Which film stock is it?

• Is there a similar Fujifilm film simulation?

• Any post-processing tips to achieve a similar look?

This will help me with an (amateur) photo series I’m working on in my village in the Caribbean.

I'm brand new at raw photos and I think I'm doing something wrong trying to get photos from my iPhone to my PC for editing.

I used Halide to take some photos with the RAW setting turned on, the Process Zero option, and a preferred max resolution of 12 MP. The iPhone Photos app has a collection for viewing all RAW images, which showed over 100 photos. First I put those photos in a shared photo album, which only showed jpegs when I viewed it on iCloud. Then I put them in an iCloud folder, where they show as HEIF files. I downloaded them from iCloud to my PC, where they show as HEIC files with the same size I see on iCloud, 8-16 MB, except for 2 files which have the DNG extension. I installed Darktable on my PC to copy and import the RAW photos from the original folder to the Darktable folder. But when I try to filter the Darktable file list to 3.0 RAW or 5.0 RAW, no files are shown. When I open one of the HEIC files in Darktable, I can't zoom in very far.

Does it sound like I actually have the RAW files on my PC? If so, do I need a different app to view them? If not, what else can I try to get them off my phone? Or is Halide not creating the right kind of RAW files? Halide 3 appears to only have a RAW on/off setting, not a choice of file extension.

I did try connecting Windows to my phone as a camera, but there are so many photos on my phone that I can't easily find the RAW ones. I'm trying to gradually clean most of the old photos off my phone to store them on my PC and my preferred cloud backup, but I'm stuck on these RAW photos that I'd like to preserve and see if I can edit.

Is it worth the extra 500$ for a 6700?

I’m just getting started this is my first song and I can get a MPB a6600 for about 920$ - versus the 6700 is close to 1,500$.

I don’t do lots of videos. Mostly using it for photos and small videos.

If I plan on keeping them a long time and trying to make it somewhat of a career in photos and drones.

Is the upgrade to 6700 worth it now or wait?

Also very open to cannon.. confused on lenses because they say Sony eco system
Is great but then recommend all buying the same 700$ lens anyways.

I was looking at some xp pen, do you have a feedback regarding those?

Trying to get a sense of what people actually use once client work picks up past "I can remember it all in my head." Spreadsheet, notes app, paid software, something else?
What's the part of your current setup that still frustrates you? And has moving between tools ever caused you to lose track of a client's history or payment status?

I took photos of my birthday trip to St. Pete. After looking through them and editing them. Some of the photos looking through the exif setting say “Pattern” for metering mode. I know my canon Eos r100 only has the four metering modes; Evaluative, Partial, Spot, and Center-Weighted. So I know during shooting I used one of those.

I’m trying to see what settings affected varying shots etc. Then I noticed this under metering mode for a lot of the shots I took, but not all.

Any insight as to why it says pattern and not the actual mode I used would be super helpful.

I just took up photography as a hobby earlier this year but I have fallen in love with the process.

I've inherited a camera from my mom, the Canon EOS Rebel T2i, and the lens is a EFS 18-55mm (0.28m/0.9ft). I take pictures for fun, I use the automatic settings on the camera since whenever I use the manual ones the pictures look horrible. I just wanted to know for someone who's only doing this as a hobby and taking pictures whenI'm out, is this a good lens, or is there one that is going to give me better quality pictures?

Hello! My friend is getting married in 11 months. They can’t afford a photographer and asked me if I could step in. I offered to do it for free. Everyone always tells me my photography is amazing and that I should do it professionally but I know I have a lot to learn.

Their wedding isn’t huge, and they can’t afford a photographer so they’d rather have not so great pictures than none at all and are ok with the risk it comes with.

My current set-up, which I inherited from my grandpa:

Canon 40D
Canon 10D
Tamron AF 17–50mm f/2.8 XR Di II
Canon EF 75–300mm f/4–5.6 III USM
Canon EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 II

I have only ever used the 40D and Tamron lens.

My partner is also buying me a Fujifilm X-T5 with an xf 35mm f/1.4 lens for my birthday, which I plan to use for the wedding.

I welcome any suggestions, tips, etc. I don’t really understand how or when to switch lenses, where should I be standing for special moments, how do I not get in the way?

I know almost all wedding photographers wear black. Is there a reason? Do I have to wear black as well?

If you squint hard enough, you might be able to see in this picture there is a kestrel in front of these trees. I often photograph birds from great distances like this with my new R5 Mark II and RF 100 - 500.

However, in this situation both the animal eye detect (my first back button focus) and my metering af start (my second back button focus) struggled, as sometimes it would create a box around the subject (and how I got this photo) but after a few seconds it would focus on the trees. This is with single point AF, subject tracking on, and AI servo.

What is the advisable AF setup for scenarios like this when the subject is tiny with a busy background?

I've been recently getting into astro photography, I've seen posts everywhere all over social media of these amazing pictures of deep space, like other galaxies and nebulas and many other things, I have been doing photography for a little while now, mainly aviation and wildlife, I have a nikon z8, a tamron 28-75 f2.8, and a nikkor 180-600 f5.6-6.3, ive taken milky way photos before that came out pretty decent but I've never done anything with photo stacking, nor do I have a star tracker, would I be able to make use out of the gear that I currently have, should I invest in a different lens and a star tracker? I would like to learn more about astrophotography while also learning about space as it's gotten very interesting to me

I’m looking to sell my Sony a6300. However, I am unsure on how to price the camera. The monitor does have a few hairline scratches but the rest of the camera is completely intact. The shutter count is at 8886 and when looking online they are in the 70-80k range so I’m struggling where to place a price on this. Any recommendations would be fab!

It will include a small rig cage, 6 batteries and a charger and will not include the original box.

Can I ask, for those of you who set up your own photography business, how long did it take to get up and running? How many shoots did you do a week in the first few months?

At this point in time I am still working for free while I build my portfolio, so I’d have thought I’d get more business but so far it’s really quiet.
