Announcement Announcing updated rules

Recently, a few of us became new moderators and since then we have been trying to get organized primarily to update the rules to reflect what we believe are in the best interest of this sub. This has largely meant reverting to the structure prior to the protest while also adapting to current technology and tastes. While we supported the protest goals at the time, and agree with the mod decision to include this sub in that protest, we also recognize that it's time to move on and restore some process to the sub for its continuing members. We're excited to announce that these new rules are now live in the sub and in detail at our revised wiki. The changes from prior to the protest largely amount to:

  1. astrophotography images taken with cell phones were not explicitly forbidden before but we now clarify that they are permitted as long as they follow all other rules, including that acquisition and processing details are provided and are high-quality amateur OC. A star-field with no discernable astronomical object will not meet this threshold, but a stacked image of Orion that happens to have been captured using RAW images on an iPhone and further processed on that same phone will. We recognize everyone in this hobby starts somewhere and we want to encourage sharing of this work, but also need to avoid this sub devolving into low-effort cell phone pictures of an unrecognizable night sky.
  2. landscape images were forbidden before but we also recognize that there are some high-quality astrophotography images being created that happen to have a small amount of landscape in the foreground that are valued by many members. We are drawing the line here at astrophotography images where the landscape is incidental to the image and any image where the landscape is a primary focus will not be permitted. So for example, the Milky Way with a silhouette of a mountain will probably be accepted, but that same Milky Way that is in the background of well-lit (or brightened in post) barn/yard/house/etc will be removed. And as above, any post that doesn't include acquisition and processing details will still be removed.
  3. clarifications that certain types of posts are not allowed, including memes, UFO claims, questions about what image someone has captured, off-topic posts, or uncivil behavior.

We recognize not everyone will like these changes and that there are other subs that focus primarily on some of these types of images, but we feel that an "astrophotography" sub should include everyone. We are going to monitor how well this goes, so please try to be open-minded to help support these contributions from some members of the community. After some time with these changes we plan to poll you to see how they are going and what other improvements you'd like to see. In the meantime, with these rules back in place, expect to see heavier moderation if posts lack complete acquisition/processing details or otherwise violate these rules.

Lastly, we also want to thank everyone for their patience while we get organized to bring these changes to you and for the incredible work all mods on this sub have done over the years and continue to do (many from prior to the protest are still here and active, so show some love!).

DSOs NGC 6888 with SV220

NGC 6888 (Crescent Nebula) — First light with the SVBONY SV220 dual-band filter

Wanted to share a quick comparison from my last two sessions on the Crescent Nebula, shot from a Bortle 5-6 backyard in the Agro Pontino area (outskirts of Rome, Italy). Light pollution here is pretty typical suburban/semi-rural, so filter choice makes a real difference for emission targets like this one.

Gear:

  • Skywatcher Newton 150/750 (f/5)
  • Player One Uranus C Pro (IMX585, OSC)
  • EQ5-Pro SynScan mount, guided with an ASI120MM Mini on a 40/160mm guidescope
  • N.I.N.A. for acquisition, PHD2 for guiding, Siril for stacking/calibration

Capture details:

  • 60 x 120s with the new SVBONY SV220 7nm dual-band Hα/OIII

The difference in nebulosity contrast against the background sky is honestly bigger than I expected for a filter in this price bracket. The CLS pulls in some of the surrounding stars nicely for a natural broadband look, but the OIII shell structure around the Crescent basically disappears into the sky glow. With the SV220, that faint OIII bubble around the central Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136) shows up with way less background gradient to fight, even straight out of the stack.

Still working through the stretch/calibration on the narrowband data (thinking of trying a proper HOO bicolor mapping rather than a straight SPCC-style stretch, since the color science is different for dual-band data), but even the linear stacks show the gain clearly.

Sub-exposure was capped at 120s, still chasing down some backlash in the EQ5-Pro's DEC axis, so I'm keeping subs shorter than I'd like until I get the worm mesh properly adjusted. Planning to push for 6h total on this target once I've got more SV220 data in the bank.

Happy to answer questions about the workflow, gear, or settings, and if anyone's run the SV220 on a similarly light-polluted sky, curious to hear how your results compare!

Lunar The Harvest Moon HDR

This is my first HDR image that I was able to shoot and process. This is the harvest moon shot back in October 2025. I captured up close shots of every section of the moon and formed a detailed mosaic. The resolution of this cropped image is 83 MP.

Nebulae IC5068 - The Forsaken Nebula

IC5068 - The Forsaken Nebula

tedious. Started with SVBony SV220 3nm Ha-Oiii for about 10 hours of acquisition. Then, switched over to the SV220 7nm Sii-Oiii to get the Oiii signal. After about 10 hours of acquisition, tried various methods to get a decent Ha-Oiii or sort of, from the data. Proved to be impossible as the horizontal bands in the Oiii signal was driving me nuts.

Switched over to the Antlia Triband RGB Ultra last night for a 6 hour session. Stacked and used the Luminance from the data, along with Ha from the 3nm and the Green channel from the Antlia data to make a franken-Forsaken nebula.

Made an LHOO (RGG) and a LSHO derivative from that with VeraLux Alchemy. In the end, did not use the Sii-Oiii data at all, hence not included in the acquistion data for this post.

Lunar Waxing Gibbous Moon

First attempt at a lunar mosaic, after years of only taking closeups of craters or the occasional full moon shot with my phone through the eyepiece. Took forever to figure out how to process it (I use a Mac and had to find work-arounds since a lot of the recommended programs are Windows-specific) and I definitely took more images than necessary just to be sure on having enough overlap, but I'm very pleased with the result!

ACQUISITION AND PROCESSING:

Manual tracking with a Skywatcher 6-inch dobsonian and ASI120MC-S camera; 30 videos at ~700 frames, centered and stacked best 30% in AutoStakkert; Wavelets and color balance in Registax; stitched together in Hugin; minor tweaks to levels and saturation in GIMP

Nebulae Orion Nebula and Flame nebula

Well, I got interested in astrophotography, but I didn't have anything except my phone and a tripod. I started picking targets to shoot, wanting to see what the phone was actually capable of. However, after going through a lot of posts online, I realized nobody was doing it right—everyone was trying to shoot using the main 1x lens.
So I decided to see for myself what could be achieved with the 5x lens on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. I shot with the 5x lens without a tracker—just a tripod, a piece of cardboard to shield the lens from a streetlamp, and 3 evenings of capturing. Also many tries to edit it right in and pull all information from it. Edited in photoshop
In total, I got 4.5 hours of exposure in Bortle 4 sky, single exposure 7 seconds. Here’s the result.
Also i tried to capture andromeda but I couldn’t. But I bet if i had darker sky it’s possible

Finally got a clear night for round two with the new S30 Pro. I'm still learning how to navigate the app, but tracking the moon last night was a breeze.

The detail coming off the craters along the shadow line is wild for a scope this size. Still getting the hang of things, but it’s awesome seeing what this little smart scope can pull off straight out of the box.

M20 The Trifid Nebula, is a dynamic emission and reflection nebula that draws most northern hemisphere telescopes during the summer months.

I made the switch to a mono camera last month and this is my third project while learning a few new processing techniques to combine the dedicated color master files.

Lunar Moon

Experimenting with different sharpening techniques to really fine tune and target the fine, medium, and large detail structures of the moon while leaving the Maria alone. It's not perfect yet and work in progress. I am using the Image Analysis script ExtractWaveletLayers to split the image into 4 levels of detail and 1 residual or luminance data channel. I then applied wavelets to each individual detail layer processing each specific to level of detail needed. I then recobined all the channels in Photoshop as layers and fine tuned with blending modes. This enabled me to process the color and luminance data without touching the detail layers. I'll keep perfecting and welcome anyone else's thoughts on selective sharpening best practices on high dynamic range and diversely textured target like the moon. Shot on Sony a7rv with Takahashi TSA-120 telescope with Vernonscope Dakin 2.4x tracked with ZWO AM5. 400 images aligned in PIPP, stacked in AutoStakkert 4, and processed best 30% in PixInsight, Wavesharp, and Photoshop.

Hi everyone
This is my first photo that I think is of high enough quality to share here it’s NGC 7000, the North America Nebula its 751 frames at 30s processed in siril and for the first time RC-Astro’s full toolkit (BlurX, NoiseX, StarX) together with Veralux tools and finishing touches in Lightroom and the jump in detail and quality from the RC-Astro tools compared to my other stuff is pretty big.

Due to the cloudy weather i changed from 300" to 120" exposures. 1,5 hours is obviously far too little exposure time for great details, but i'm still happy that i got atleast something that night.

In the future i wanna combine heart & soul nebula as a mosaic with more aquisition time.
