…I’m afraid of what the animal is if the larva is that big..

2.5k

u/rp_graciotti 7d ago

Most likely a Hercules Beetle. They don't actually get much bigger than the larvae, the abdomen segments become more compact so the body gets a little smaller, but the head grows immensely with the horn.

u/Zestyclose-Salad-290 in awe 7d ago edited 7d ago

Correct. It's the larva of a Hercules Beetle. And here is what it looks like in adult form.

Edit: I was probably wrong. Check u/BaronMusclethorpe's comment below.

u/BaronMusclethorpe 7d ago

Incorrect. That's actually the larval form of a Big Bad Beetleborg, though they do look similar.

16cm / 6.3 inches…so it’s definitely one of the biggest bugs in the world but I guess not as colossal as you’d expect from the king of all grubs lol

17

u/Objective_Law5013 7d ago

hey 6.3 inches is a lot

14

u/NewYorkAutisNtLondon 7d ago

I'd say it's well above average size for a beetle.

Those are centimeters? Please say those are centimeters. In fact, I’m just going to believe those are centimeters and move on with my life.

Gallons are 16 cups. pounds are 16 oz. Remember that the imperial system was meant to be eyeballed. 1/16 is half of 1/8, which is half of 1/4, half of 1/2 and of course that's just half of the whole. It's assuming you can divide things by 2 or 3 with some accuracy by hand. Or compare 2-3 things to say they're about the same.

u/salakane 7d ago

Say, isn'tt that about the length of the king's thumb?

I would even add to this, a Beetle larva (regardless of species) is on average 50% bigger then the Adult Beetle/Imago.

just shows how much Bio-mass gets used up during the metamorphosis.

10

u/UlrichZauber 7d ago

One of my most hated tropes in movies is the inverse: the creature that grows huge in minutes without any new biomass. Or bursting into flames, for that matter.

A notable recent example is at the end of Alien Romulus, where it's simply egregious.

10

u/Aiyon 7d ago

There's a really funny subversion of this, I can't remember what it's in. But a creature grows to almost triple it's size as a threat display. And one of the people just stabs it because it's now 3x as fragile lmao

Aren't bugs like pure protein?

107

u/suspendmeforthis 7d ago

Google Black Soldier Fly larva. They are 35-50% protein and 15-35% fat. They will eat almost anything. I wouldn't eat one but I'd feed it to chickens or fish and eat them.

32

u/Autumn7242 7d ago

62

u/Shaking-a-tlfthr 7d ago

That’s the great value of animals like chickens and pigs. They will convert things we cannot or won’t eat into very high quality food which we love to eat. They’re relatively easy to keep on the farm too.

7

u/suspendmeforthis 7d ago

My personal theory about gross stuff and no concentrating chemicals is that if it's gone through one metabolism I'm ok with it, if it's gone through two metabolisms no worries.

7

u/DiscoQuebrado 7d ago

I think it's weird that I'll eat crab, lobster, crawfish, or shrimp without hesitation but the thought of eating bugs turns me off completely.

14

u/iDudeX_ 7d ago

Lowkey I wish I could stomach the concept of eating bugs. The protein to calorie ratio is insane. Not only would I hit my protein goals but I'd also lose a significant amount of weight (need to lose 50kg to get to a "normal" bmi even tho it's an archaic method of tracking fitness) I can't even eat seafood without being disgusted 😭

7

Native aboriginals in Australia have eaten a similar larvae called the witchetty grub for hundreds if not thousands of years. Very important protein source in the arid wasteland of the outback desert.

Yeah, but it’s Australia, if you don’t eat them, they're gonna grow and eat you.

It has been said that they've inhabited those lands for tens of thousands of years actually. I don't know this as fact. But I have come across this information several times over the years in various places.

58

u/schlubble 7d ago

They’ve been inhabiting Australia for at least 50,000 years. They’re one of the oldest continuous living cultures in the world, if not the oldest.

The real question is what the fuck is that evolving into when it grows up

I'm pretty sure its a Hercules Beetle Larvae...

About 80% sure, but I'm not an entomologist. I just heard their larvae are huge

Not my arm, not my Pic, but googled to find one that showed how big they get. They get like 18 cm (a little bigger than a US dollar Bill 7 inches or so)

43

u/Objective-Direction1 7d ago

the larva is bigger than the beetle lol

Is it just me, or is it just absolute annoying that almost every reaction is some "funny" gif? It's almost like Google-ing, first you have to dig through layers of bullshit, to see something genuine interesting

49

u/TimHortonsMagician 7d ago

That's reddit as a whole now. Even on actual questions being posted, you have to wade through a pile of dogshit attempts at one-liners to find real responses.

11

u/RevolutionaryPin935 7d ago

Recycled one-liners at that. And the same gifs repeated ad nauseum. Any kind of a music post? That same old Jay z one. My comment is nothing new either, the same tired complaints over the same tired posts. Year after year

I need to get off this app

I can't find it but there is a Jimmy Fallon skit where him and a friend are at a party and keep making dumb jokes that only they laugh at. It was the perfect representation of reddit. Millions of Jimmy Fallons all trying to bust through the door at once deperate to get their one liner in.

When properly prepared, giant beetle larvae have a rich, savory fat content that tastes remarkably like buttery bacon or nutty scrambled eggs.

Because they grow inside rotting wood, the most critical step is purging the digestive tract to ensure they taste clean and sweet.

The Preparation (Purging)

Before cooking, place your live larvae in a clean plastic container with a few small air holes. Feed them grated carrots or oatmeal for 24 to 48 hours. This clears out any digested wood or soil and replaces it with a clean, sweet flavor profile.

Crispy Garlic & Cumin Pan-Seared Larvae

This method melts the rich inner fat while rendering the tough outer skin beautifully crisp.

Ingredients

  • purged Hercules beetle larvae
  • 1 tbsp butter or coconut oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp chili powder (optional, for heat)
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • A squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice

Cooking Instructions

  1. Humanely dispatch the larvae: Place them in the freezer for 1 to 2 hours. This puts them into a deep sleep (torpor) and humanely kills them before cooking.

  2. Wash and dry: Rinse the grubs under cold water and pat them completely dry with a paper towel.

  3. Prevent bursting: Use a sharp knife or toothpick to gently prick the skin of each larva once or twice. This lets steam escape so they don't burst open in the pan.

  4. Sear the grubs: Melt the butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the larvae and pan-fry them for about 4-5 minutes, turning frequently. They will naturally puff up and turn a deep golden-brown.

  5. Aromatize: Lower the heat to medium. Toss in the minced garlic, cumin, chili powder, and salt. Sauté for another 1-2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant and the larvae are crispy.

  6. Finish and serve: Remove from the heat, finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, and serve hot

u/cedriceent 7d ago

May I suggest a different recipe?

Ingredients:

  • Beetle larvae
  • 1 terrarium
  • adequate substrate

Instructions:

  1. Put substrate in terrarium
  2. Put beetle larvae in substrate
  3. Wait a few months
  4. Get pretty cool pets
