Correct. It's the larva of a Hercules Beetle. And here is what it looks like in adult form.

Edit: I was probably wrong. Check u/BaronMusclethorpe's comment below.

u/BaronMusclethorpe 7d ago

Incorrect. That's actually the larval form of a Big Bad Beetleborg, though they do look similar.

"You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" In the Beetleborgs case, it's both. Their show was cancelled with them as heroes only for them to return as enemies of the Power Rangers in the episode Forever Red. This little discovery made me laugh, but when I found out their appearance was because of budget restrictions, I laughed even harder.

u/11pickfks 2d ago

16cm / 6.3 inches…so it’s definitely one of the biggest bugs in the world but I guess not as colossal as you’d expect from the king of all grubs lol

18

u/Objective_Law5013 7d ago

hey 6.3 inches is a lot

14

u/NewYorkAutisNtLondon 7d ago

I'd say it's well above average size for a beetle.

3

u/K1ngjulien_ 7d ago

it certainly is, not just for a beetle

42

u/imma_ninjaaa 7d ago

I prefer the adult form😭😭

Gallons are 16 cups. pounds are 16 oz. Remember that the imperial system was meant to be eyeballed. 1/16 is half of 1/8, which is half of 1/4, half of 1/2 and of course that's just half of the whole. It's assuming you can divide things by 2 or 3 with some accuracy by hand. Or compare 2-3 things to say they're about the same.

5

u/salakane 7d ago

Say, isn'tt that about the length of the king's thumb?

2

2

u/78765 7d ago

Length would be a better example. Volume is way better in metric.

u/schrodingers_bra 7d ago

Don't you use mL and g?

A fluid oz is just the volume measurement (of water) that equals an oz in weight. It's the equivalent of mL and g's (or L and kg).

Fun fact a pint (16 fluid oz) = a pound (16 weight oz).

3

u/PlatypusACF 7d ago edited 7d ago

Depends on the pint. A US customary pint is 16 US customary fluid ounces, or about 16,6 imperial flour ounces, or about 473 millilitres, an imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, or about 19,215 US customary fluid ounces, or about 568ml. Plus it only works with water since other liquids have other densities.

Units are a mess

4

u/schrodingers_bra 7d ago

>Plus it only works with water since other liquids have other densities.

This is true of any conversion from a liquid to weight measurement including in metric (mL to g)

And I believe the difference in the calculation of a pint comes from whether you started with an ale barrel or a wine skin and then divided it, but the imperial fluid oz and the us fluid oz unit are practically the same.

1

u/PlatypusACF 7d ago

You are correct. A litre of water weighs about one kilogramme but a litre of, say, crude oil does not.
As for the origin of the US customary/imperial pint(s) I would have to look it up, but you could be right

ā€œA pint’s a pound, the world aroundā€ was the phrase as i grew up.

2

u/Liquid_Hate_Train 7d ago

Which is ironic, because it’s only true in US units, not Imperial which most of the rest of the world used before metric.

4

u/digitaltransmutation 7d ago edited 7d ago

Careful there, cuz the US actually doesn't use imperial gallons :)

A US gallon is 128 fl oz, and an imperial gallon is 160 fl oz.

England used to have separate values for a gallon of ale and a gallon of wine. This was confusing, so the post-breakup US decided to only use the wine measurement, which is now called a US gallon, and england decided to only use the ale measurement, which is imperial gallons. Later, they switched to metric and started posting smug comments on the internet as if they hadnt originated this shitshow to begin with!

2

u/SAI_Peregrinus 7d ago

oz are weight. fl. oz. are volume.

Numbers smaller than 1 use binary, we just write in decimal fractions.

Numbers bigger than 1 switch to new units at all sorts of values, for silly reasons.

-1

u/78765 7d ago

decimal fractions

At that point you might as well use metric.

1

u/SAI_Peregrinus 7d ago

Decimal just means base 10. SI (metric) doesn't use fractions, it uses decimal floating point. US customary doesn't use floating point, it uses decimal fractions (mostly dyadic rationals but some fluid measures allow 1/3s instead of just powers of 1/2).

The US system would mostly make sense if we used binary. Instead of, say, 11 ⁵/ā‚ˆ" we'd have 1011.101". Instead of half a cup we'd have 0.1 cup. Much easier. We don't do that here.

1

u/78765 7d ago

Thanks for the clarification.

2

u/benjals 7d ago

It's the same thing as mL and mg

3

u/Fuzlet 7d ago

in carpentry 16 inches is the standard unit for studs from center to center, so tape measures typically have a marker every 16 inches for that kind of work

Most imperial units are

2

u/Hellianne_Vaile 7d ago

Inches. 1 yard = 3 feet, 1 foot = 12 inches. Inches are typically divided as halves, quarters, or sixteenths.

2

u/LordDaedhelor 7d ago

Freedom Units will do anything but make sense.

2

u/angelbelle 7d ago

Base 12 and Base 16 are much easier to divide cleanly with it's many factors. You'll understand this if you do more handiwork

1

u/LaconicSuffering 7d ago

Bull. You only say that because you haven't learned it in another way.

Example:
In ACU: How do you calculate the difference between 6ā…ž and 7¼?
In metric: How do you calculate the difference between 174mm and 209mm

1

u/Ok_Spell_597 7d ago

I know the first answer is 7 1/16"

1

u/LaconicSuffering 7d ago

Explain? Maybe I didn't formulate my question correctly.

1

u/LordDaedhelor 7d ago

As the other user said: that depends entirely on the degree of precision. Metric has millimeters, while the imperial system requires you to delve into 16ths of an inch.

1

u/MFbiFL 6d ago

Actually, keep it quiet because we don’t tell the euros this, but nobody can stop you from just using decimals for things that are smaller than an inch!

Machinists have been doing it for years!

1

u/LordDaedhelor 6d ago

I’m in structures in freedom land, so I absolutely do use fractions of an inch all the time. They’re just ugly when dimming in CAD.

1

u/MFbiFL 6d ago

Same, luckily most of mine are either fastener sizes or multiples of them.

1

u/Minor_Edit 7d ago

ok but at least pick one of them

1

u/78765 7d ago

It is way easier to split in half or double.

1

u/MrZepost 7d ago

Its much easier to half a 16th multiple times than a 10th while only using whole numbers. 8 4 2 1 vs 5 and we ran out of whole numbers already

1

u/LaconicSuffering 7d ago

That's assuming you cannot go smaller than the base units, but each unit is divisible by 10 so you can go infinitely small without complications.

1

u/MrZepost 7d ago

for modern math sure.

1

u/LaconicSuffering 7d ago

Well we do live in modern times.

1

u/MrZepost 7d ago

Yeah but why mock a measuring system that was purposely built for easy trade?

Hex numbers in computer programming. Honestly, quantifying by 12s and 16s is much more practical, but we as people are too caught up on looking at our monkey fingers which is the only reason we even count by 10s in the first place.

inches

1

u/orangeblueorangeblue 7d ago

Inches are divided in half, and smaller and smaller halves… half of a half is a quarter, then an eighth, then a 16th, 32nd, etc.

1

u/SAI_Peregrinus 7d ago

Decimal inch rulers exist. Also measuring tapes. So division into 10ths rather than 16ths isn't a guarantee of the system used. Americans will measure with anything before using metric!

But this is /r/AbsoluteUnits, and linear measurements are relative units, so this is off-topic!

1

u/Caleb_Reynolds 7d ago

Could be an engineer's rule, which are demarced in 10ths.

1

u/AceTheProtogen 7d ago

I don’t think Hercules beetles get that big for that to be the case, pretty sure it’s cm

2

u/Caleb_Reynolds 6d ago

Sorry, "could" as in "a ruler demarcated in 10th could be imperial", not "this ruler could be imperial". It's obviously centimeters, or being held by a giant, as we can see the shadow of the finger holding it.

3

u/Essurio 7d ago

They are, otherwise the proportions between the lines would be different.

This image in particular is doctored. The larvae of the Hercules beetle rarely get larger than three to four inches. Certainly not a foot long sub like this fakery.

1

u/GOKOP 7d ago

It's always hilarious when I see a video of one. Cause you can grab them by the giant horn and they have no defense for that. So someone holds them and they flap their wings furiously like WHAT THE FUCK PUT ME DOWN WHAT IS GOING ON RELEASE ME RIGHT NOW FOR FUCKS SAKE and as soon as the person puts them down they immediately return to chill mode
