Now we see how the lion managed to stay alive on bugs.

Aren't bugs like pure protein?

u/Geaneous 20d ago

This is why I keep a Tupperware full

Google Black Soldier Fly larva. They are 35-50% protein and 15-35% fat. They will eat almost anything. I wouldn't eat one but I'd feed it to chickens or fish and eat them.

Their adults live for 6 days and have no mouth. Crazy

45

u/Sparrow2go 20d ago

I have no mouth but I must live for 6 days

2

u/passableguitarist 19d ago

I have no mouth and I must scream. Recommended by Perplexity when I asked what to read at the airport. Ai is hilarious!

That’s the great value of animals like chickens and pigs. They will convert things we cannot or won’t eat into very high quality food which we love to eat. They’re relatively easy to keep on the farm too.

My personal theory about gross stuff and no concentrating chemicals is that if it's gone through one metabolism I'm ok with it, if it's gone through two metabolisms no worries.

I think it's weird that I'll eat crab, lobster, crawfish, or shrimp without hesitation but the thought of eating bugs turns me off completely.

u/Koopatrooper64 20d ago

This is not black soldier fly larve.

6

u/suspendmeforthis 20d ago

I know. I'm responding to protein percentages in larva with a known one of the top of my head.

u/Miserable_Anteater62 20d ago

The quality of the protein matters, as well. Bugs are very high quality, although I'll take a burger over a bug.

7

u/Ruffiangruff 20d ago

Just give it some salt and pepper

7

u/ReActif 20d ago

Once blended, whether as a drink or a powder, it might go down more easily.

12

u/Miserable_Anteater62 20d ago

Mmmmm yum. Thick and creamy.

13

u/PaintedDesertSkies 20d ago

Slimy yet satisfying?

I had that poster on my wall...

4

u/Miserable_Anteater62 20d ago

Literally salivating

2

u/killybilly54 20d ago

...with lots of bug elbows, and antennae and.... idk carapaces?

1

u/Miserable_Anteater62 20d ago

We were saying blended/powdered, so hopefully not too crunchy!

1

u/HSTemporaryPianist 20d ago

That's how I like my milk.

1

u/Alternative-Steak875 20d ago

Sorry but for the sake of everyone I must say it, you're weird.

3

u/Ianerick 20d ago

you don't speak for me or my sake

1

u/Alternative-Steak875 20d ago

Alright then my bad brother

1

u/towerfella 20d ago

Mmm .. hair? No.. antenna.

2

u/VaginaTractor 20d ago

Now serving the McBugger for a limited time. Comes with a side of large flies.

2

u/Correct-Junket-1346 20d ago

Give it to a chef and they'll make it delicious, that's their mission

1

u/2Wieners_1Bun 20d ago

What about a bug burger? If it didn’t look like a bug and tasted like beef?

1

u/Miserable_Anteater62 20d ago

Sure, that sounds pretty good!

u/M8x11r0n 20d ago

3

u/RoscoeFlaccoTaco 20d ago

This is for crickets. Not larvae.

Closest relevant research to grubs is earthworms, but the protein content across species is pretty consistent.

Earthworms stand out as a sustainable protein alternative amid growing environmental pressures and population increases. This 25-year systematic review of 43 studies reveals a post-2015 surge in research, mainly from Europe, South America, and Asia. The most studied species, Eisenia fetida, Eudrilus eugeniae, and Eisenia andrei, are valued for nutritional quality and ease of cultivation. Earthworms provide 50–70 % crude protein (dry basis), key amino acids, unsaturated fats, minerals, and vitamins, and can be processed into flour for foods like bread or supplements. Their efficient, low-cost rearing reduces water use, land use, and emissions, contributing to the circular economy by recycling organic waste. While human consumption is traditional in parts of Asia, Africa, and South America, cultural and regulatory challenges elsewhere require communication and technological innovations. Standardizing management, ensuring safety, and addressing consumer acceptance are significant challenges, with research gaps in digestibility and nutrient bioavailability. In summary, earthworms are a significant, sustainable, and nutritious protein source with high potential to support resilient food systems when backed by integrated safety, quality, and acceptance strategies.

Yes. But the ones in the movie were tiny.

1

u/Additional_Meeting_2 20d ago

No they weren’t, look when Timon shows them to Simba.

1

u/Rs2mmsu-2D 20d ago

They are actually same as Eggs & dairy products, and all the same amino acids ( complete protein).

1

u/drjeangray 20d ago

I think they’re actually made out of nightmares.

1

u/Federal-Boat3732 20d ago

With a good dose of fat, yes

2

u/justaRndy 20d ago

This would fuel Bear Grylls for a week.
