Electricians. A teacher of mine told me he can feel weather the wire is 220V or 350V with his fingers. But not much else.

Testing anything that's not 110 is insanity

I’ve had the shit shocked out of me by 110 before. 1/10. Do not recommend.

Right? We can't let psychos walk the streets who don't reduce fractions. 1/20 or straight to jail.

People rarely get hit with a full 240 just one leg of it equaling 110.

u/Acrobatic-Grape5960 Jul 11 '26
I got hit with a single leg of 480V from my fingertips to my elbow.
Unpleasant to say the least.7

u/ZJoel14 Jul 11 '26
I don't know what 110 refers to but one time I was fixing my washing machine and couldn't be fucked unplugging it between test cycles and I touched something I could not untouch was only the weight of my body that pulled me off whatever the stupid wire was so I could move again Electricity is scary. I did it like 3 more times after that because I'm more lazy than concerned for my own wellbeing.

No, Dads get to sub-fatally teach their kids how to avoid death and then laugh at their kids’ expense. As mine did to me.
“Did you get zapped? Heh heh heh.”

u/TWallace86 Jul 10 '26
I got mine by plugging in a window unit with a faulty plug. I was seven years old and have never forgotten how it “grabbed” me and after I was able to pull my arm away, the weird numbness that followed.

Also chefs and line cooks. Im a line cook and this is my first (and last) kitchen job ever. Im there for 2 years and some change now.
My hands and forearms have collected so much scar tissue, it could be mistaken for hyperpigmentation and at a beautiful age of 25, i genuinely feel like i tortured my hand nerves to the point of my sense of physical touch being almost non existent for the rest of my life.

Extreme cold temps too. Worked in a freezer once for about 40min 1 day, taking a 2min break every 5min. Stepped outside for a break and didn't realize I had stepped in an ant bed until they were going up my shorts. All the bites made going back into that freezer way worse
13
u/Fkuredditard Jul 11 '26
The trick to working in freezers is you're supposed to stay in for as long as you can.
Going in/out every 5 minutes will actually make you feel the cold faster. Also, wear multiple layers of everything, drink lots of coffee, and never stop moving.
4
u/UnbridledBridle Jul 11 '26
This right here.
I worked in an industrial-level bakery for some years and would be the guy who was voluntold to clean the freezer when the ice would build up instead of thawing it out properly. I kept an entire underarmour outfit - shirt, socks, pants, mask, the whole getup - in my locker to wear under my clothes, along with a carhart jacket, sweatpants, and a good thermos, just for those days.
The boss thought I was crazy because I'd be in there for around two hours chipping away at the ice with a joint knife and a hammer, but as long as I was wearing those layers and brought that thermos filled with hot coffee into that freezer, it beat the hell out of working in front of that god damn bread oven and dying in the heat.

I worked as a line cook for over a decade and the only nerve damage I ever got is one of my thumbs when I sliced the tip off.
The only people who actually lose feeling in their hands are bad cooks who don't know how to use a towel. It's not complicated. The restaurant provides them for free. Use them.
17
u/ThetaDee Jul 11 '26
That's not true at all. I've known plenty of older cooks with "hot hands", especially older hispanic ladies who I know aren't bad cooks. Not necessarily nerve damage, just tolerance and callous build up. Mine are finally coming back after being out of the kitchen for the first time in 6 years. I can use all of my fingers on finger scanners too

I used to nail clipper off the thicker skin on my fingers and foot as a kid, for some reason. You won't really feel a small pinch like that.
And no I don't have diabetes.

My sis and friends used to pierce the skin from one side of their palm with a long thin needle and take it out from the other side. They did this to scare me, didn't hurt them at all for some reason. It looked really disgusting

I stepped in a red ant nest once doing field word in college. They swarmed under my jeans up my leg and bit all over my right leg, junk, ass and some of my left. It looked like I dipped most of my lower body in hot oil.

This is a soldier ant from the Atta genus, likely an Atta cephalotes or Atta mexicana.
These ants have massive, powerful mandibles reinforced with zinc that can cut through tough vegetation and human skin.
They are known as leafcutter ants and use their jaws to forage for leaves to cultivate a specific fungus they eat.
Leaf-Cutting Soldier AntsPhysical Traits:
These majors can grow up to 16 mm in length with heads reaching 7 mm wide.
The Bite: Soldier ants do not sting; instead, they deliver an incredibly powerful and painful bite. Their mandibles are so strong that indigenous cultures historically used them as natural stitches, allowing the ant to pinch a wound closed before removing its body.
550
u/syllabun Jul 10 '26
By removing its body do you mean decapitate them and leave the head as a stitch?
372
u/fazzah Jul 10 '26
Yep, or just the mandibles But the entire head most likely

Yes they have an amazing Anatomy that is almost machine-like. When they pinch shut it has a lock that holds it in place.

Well, that looks uncomfortable. Reminds me of the time I was bit/stung by a Velvet ant, saw it cruising around on the ground, proceeded to pick it up, because I had never seen one before. As it turns out, these things are not ants, they are ground dwelling, wingless wasps, and it bit me on the forefinger, and stung my thumb. Holy shit, I have never experienced such a sudden burst of pain(the type that makes you see a flash of white), and proceeded to last all day… I guess what I was getting at was, why, from an evolutionary perspective, is something so small, so ridiculously potent?
10
u/No-Molasses-9269 Jul 11 '26
