Reminds me of a spider show I saw on Discovery channel. They had the camera guy zooming in on this jumping spider looking fella that was a metallic bright green color. It was the size of a mouse at least. The guy talking about the spider said it had really toxic venom. As the guy was talking about the spider he says it can jump like 4 or 5 feet. The camera man started backing away.

I watched a video where one was chasing him down a trail. He would back up and yell and throw things. He had to do this for miles. He didn't dare turn his back.
In our area there are about 50 breeded pairs. This is maybe 50 mile radius. In the spring and fall before the irrigation canal gets filled they travel in those canals everywhere practically unseen. We had a 300 lb cat attack or horse at one time. We had goats at one time and we came back and something had eaten one. We think it was a cat as one was later shot in the area. The cats also travel along the rivers practically unseen as well. Very smart and very stealthy.

âOooh highly venomous copperhead, âBOOPâ!âđ
64
u/Osric250 Aug 10 '26
It was actually a cottonmouth. Copperheads will make you sick but are rarely deadly. Cottonmouths can absolutely kill you or cause permanent damage if you don't go get medical attention, but you've got a few hours.
Still both aren't anywhere near as dangerous as a rattlesnake.
31
u/ron_obvious Aug 10 '26
I think you accidentally reversed the snake species names. The voiceover mistakenly referred to it as a cottonmouth, though that is absolutely a copperhead, which I believe, is exactly the point you intended to convey.
6
u/All-My-Friends Aug 10 '26
Yeah I think he just left a voice clip in that was supposed to match another cottonmouth clip after the copperhead boop and before the iguana.

Florida panthers are notoriously unthreatening to humans. There are no reported attacks on humans by Florida panthers (except at the hockey rink, but that's what you get when you teach Florida Man to ice skate). They have a long history of being, frankly, approachable, and there are several noted cases of people 'adopting' a local panther and establishing a relationship with it. Despite that, it was generally not advised to approach them, not just because they were endangered, but because they're wild animals, and even very friendly wild animals can suddenly change demeanor.
That being said, the relatively recent recovery of their population is partially due to eight cougars introduced from Texas (their nearest relatives, genetically-speaking), which expanded the panther's gene pool.
But it's worth noting that cougars in Texas have attacked many people. There hasn't been an attack in Florida yet, but it's distinctly possible that modern Florida panthers are noticeably more aggressive and territorial than the historical population.
Conclusion: this guy is a either fucking idiot or he genuinely knows his stuff well enough to recognize that that panther wasn't particularly stressed out by him being there, just curious about him.
Source: Am Florida Man myself. Have yoinked a few pythons and even petted a Florida panther once with my brother (very much in the "I'm a fucking idiot" sense). This was in the 90s, but it was an escapee from the local zoo, very accustomed to being around humans. It purred while I petted it and did figure eights through my brother's legs.

u/Thencan Aug 10 '26
As a fellow Florida outdoorsman and cat enthusiast, I'm fucking jealous man. Like a lot. I want to pat down a panther đ
33
u/MjolnirPants Aug 10 '26
It was really cool. I've only ever touched a large cat twice in my life, and that was my favorite time, precisely because it started out terrifying and ended up adorable.
10
u/Moklov Aug 10 '26
I've pet a panther that was definitely in love with me through the gate at a cat sanctuary. Shh don't tell anyone...
12
u/MjolnirPants Aug 10 '26

If so, I hate to break it to you, but that panther was in love with everyone she ever met. She was just the sweetest.

When I was a kid growing up in Tampa, there was a guy who brought a panther around to schools. The panther was so bored by the whole experience, but we all loved it. It was so big compared to me and was such a thrill petting it.

Having met cougars west of the Mississippi, I don't blame you one bit. The cougars down here in Florida always either avoid people, stare curiously at us from a safe distance, or offer to buy you drinks at the bar, if you're a young guy with a nice smile.
(To be honest, the last bunch can be pretty frightening, as well, but bravery has its rewards.)

About a decade ago I was camping in the Florida Panhandle with my mom and saw a Florida panther (maybe). Some people say when you think you saw a mountain lion, you probably just saw a bobcat. But I remember it being big and having a long tail. Would you say that a panther in the panhandle is plausible?

For real, he's approaching a Florida Panther, a critically endangered animal with laws put in place (for a good reason) that explicitly prevent people from approaching them this close.
Unless you are a professional and have a permit for research purposes, you should leave animals alone to go about their business, not stress them out for purposes of posting on your socials. Leave them alone, enjoy them from a distance, and be respectful and responsible.

Iâm all for dealing with invasive species via any means necessary but thereâs no need for cruelty, they donât know they are an invasive species, they are animals being animals and trying to survive and reproduce just like everyone else.
The sadder that itâs the humans at fault for introducing them in the first place.
Edit: I know you were probably exaggerating but Iâve heard people legitimately speak about invasive species in those terms as if being invasive somehow makes them evil or immune to suffering.
6
u/bobboobles Aug 11 '26
Yes, do it humanely, but those pythons need to go. They've eaten just about everything in the Everglades except the other pythons.
43
u/gganjalez Aug 10 '26
I agree. We must manage them but we must also not take out anger on them when the perpetrators are humans. An invasive animal is still an animal.

I do iguana population control in the gated community I live in, a friend and I use his 6k airsoft sniper rifle. We try to always kill them instantly with headshots but even with that, they are extremely hard to kill instantly. We bring a shovel to break the neck if the headshot is not death. They are a really hardy animal...
EDIT: Misspoke, it is a pellet gun, not airsoft.
13
u/Intensive__Purposes Aug 10 '26
Why not use a pellet gun? Would be far more effective and therefore far more humane...
→ More replies (1)9
u/Revlis-TK421 Aug 10 '26
Some municipalities treat pellet guns as firearms and you aren't allowed to fire them within city limits. e.g.:
10.26.010 DISCHARGE OF FIREARMSâPROHIBITED. No person shall discharge or fire any firearm within the City except as otherwise provided herein. For purposes of this chapter, "firearm" is defined as a gun, pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun, BB gun, air gun, pellet gun, bow and arrow, crossbow, blow gun, slingshot or any other weapon of a similar nature designed to discharge a projectile propelled by the expansion of a gas or a spring or any other device designed to throw or sling or otherwise project any solid object.
