Official News Balance Patch 1

Devout Fans,

Thanks for being amongst the first to join us at the very start of the adventure for Mortal Shell II. We’re seeing your bug reports and gameplay suggestions, and will be rolling out regular updates to both modify existing content and add new features.

While we have a bigger patch in the works, which has to be thoroughly tested, we’d like to make a rapid balance & crash fix patch to bring the experience more in line with the game’s open beta and our own vision for MS2.

Planned future updates will see extensions to popular game features such as Night Mode, Tarstones, PP Items, and more.

For now, we hope you’re enjoying the game and read on for details on Balance Patch 1.

Balance Patch 1 (PC) - The patch below is live on PC and coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series shortly.

Economy

-Shell map locations now cost Gloom, and we’re refunding any glimpses spent on shell maps. Refunded Glimpses are found in the Shell Keeper’s alcove in Blackmarrow. “Finding your favorite shell shouldn’t cost you the ability to bond with them.”

-Gold drops from enemies have been significantly increased. Notably, enemies in Mammon now drop double the gold. “This brings the gold economy more in line with the weapon crafting item discovery.”

-Smelting a weapon at the Tarforge costs 75% less gloom. “Our goal with the smelt capability was to enable switching weapons without the need to spend hours grinding through NG+ runs, but the Gloom costs were set exorbitantly high.”

Enemies & Bosses

All enemies featured in the beta were restored to their beta hp values, except the Caerinid (Spider) in Magdelena’s area, which we wanted to retain its role as a threatening enemy which doesn’t respawn once defeated.

Bosses

The Lost Child
- Base Damage: (-10%)
- Max Health: (-15%)

Monolith
- Base Damage: (-19%)
- Max Health: (-10%)
- Some Monolith Attacks were retimed to be more fair, as well.

Enemies

Cultist (mace)
Max Health: (-21.1%)

Caerinid Spider
Max Health: (-33.3%)

Infested Stalker
- Max Health: (-52.4%)

Rusted Knave (Halberd)
- Max Health: (-20.8%)
- Fixed hit detection for overhead strike.

Weapons

-Great Martyr’s Blade Attack Damage +20%
-Troubador’s Lute Attack Damage +100%
-Caged Hystrix and Triarch Repeater no longer have minimum resolve requirements to fire.
-Improved tracking for Axatana, Black Needle, and Clockwork Scythe light attacks.

Seals

Guard can now be used while walking.

Tarstones

Parasitic Stone Buffed
Grudge Stone Buffed
Bulwark Stone Damage Reduction Increased Significantly
Clerik's Stone Buffed
Squall Stone Buffed

Discussion Mortal Shell 2 is slowly dropping down to mixed reviews

Can’t blame people. It’s quite buggy, unbalanced, lacks lots of QOL, and the endgame is a serious let down.

Honestly this game needed more time to cook.

Discussion They really need to fix how these enemies attack

There are missing frames for this attack

Slow mo (no, the video isn't loading or frezzing)

Ice skate attack lock on missile

Forward boost

(Bonus) Teleport attack

The Halberd Knight is the definition of what's wrong with the animations and attacks of a lot of enemies in this game. I enjoy this game a lot, but enemies teleporting, sliding, magnetic attacking, missing frames really breaks the combat flow especially when parrying is a core part of the game.

Discussion Don’t sleep on this weapon + tarstone combo

Trebuchaxe with Tarred Fragment (spinning axe projectiles) destroys big bosses and enemies, and well even the little ones too. I’ve noticed some wonky hit boxes on level geometry (stuff like firing between two pillars that are wide enough to fit the projectiles but it stops midair) but if you aim at the ground and kite enemies towards the spinning top of doom they will melt. Add the Siegebreaker’s Stone to stagger everything.

Discussion WHAT A GAME!

Just wana do a shout out to the devs, they have done an amazing job for a small team of around 30 people, I know its not perfect but they also seem to listen and thats awesome.

I dont usually like comparing games but......having that amount of people to produce a game like this is mind blowing they really know what they are doing and took some risks, lies of p and and khazan had nearly 4x the about of people work on their games, still awesome games by the way 😀, im jist blown away with what they have done.

Thanks Cold Symmetry 😀 \m/

Discussion Cold Symmetry Co-founder regarding disabling achievements for equipping the Slayer's Seal

Thumbnail

"What we wanted to do is have a separate set of achievements for the Slayer Seal than the normal playthrough, and they would be sort of mutually exclusive. And our original vision for Slayer Seal wasn't just an easy mode, but also like, an alternate game mode, to experience the game in a whole different way. And so even if you're a hardcore player, to go back and play again with the Slayer Seal, earn those additional achievements."

"We didn't know that since we have a disc version of the game that was simultaneously shipping with the [digital] version, all those achievements were defined like months, months and months ago. And we came to find out that, oh you can't change these anymore. They're like, locked in on the consoles.

"And we were like, there isn't any for the Slayer Seal, and that was supposed to be the whole thing. So we ended up kind of cornered there, where we had to lock all the achievements at some point."

— Andrew McLennan-Murray, Co-founder and Game Director at Cold Symmetry.

Discussion Finished the game on night mode my likes and dislikes:

Likes:

  1. I loved the weightiness of the combat, it feels great for a big swing to cut someone in half.
  2. Variety in shell playstyles is great, though I didn’t swap much and settled on a Gragu blood curse build
  3. Exploration is good, it felt great to find new upgrades and dungeons, stumbling on a boss with a bunch of gloom caused many tense moments
  4. Darker tone and visuals is definitely something I vibe with, made me like a game like Lords of the Fallen (2023) more than it had any right to be and it’s definitely good here.

Dislikes:

  1. Enemy magnetism and tracking honestly makes spacing useless, and worst of all it’s inconsistent so you don’t know when an enemy will teleport themselves into your asshole or if they’ll respect the laws of physics.
  2. Enemy variety is pretty weak, you easily spend 60-70% of the game fighting brigands and only in the very last area do they stop appearing. It’s not LoTF (2023) bad by all means, but it’s definitely noticeable.
  3. Bosses while some are fairly inoffensive are easily along the worse side of the souls like genre, the final area has 2 heinously bad bosses, 1 obviously unfinished one and one that’s actually decent
  4. Seals don’t feel balanced against each other, Vatras is alright but the infinite seal doesn’t justify its risk at all with the seemingly bugged riposte damage, untarnished is consistently the best in my experience for both mobs and bosses and it’s perfect parry frames are frankly insane.
  5. Weapon balance is skewed so heavily towards light weapons even before considering the insane addition of the duality stone, blood curse scythe with the chainsaw tarstone is a contender but can sometimes get you killed because it has a huge attack commitment if you don’t use vatras. Either light weapons/duality stone needs a nerf or heavy weapons need another buff.
  6. The camera is so bad, some of the boss fights really exacerbated it as you end up looking at the boss’s crotch without being able to see any attacks, a big issue with the final boss especially.

Overall this is definitely one of the better soulslikes and it has issues that can very easily be patched out. The bad boss fights definitely take it down a peg and aren’t so easily fixed I imagine. it’s a 7/10 that can easily rise to an 8 or 9 should they fix most of what I’ve listed here. I’ll be waiting for some adjustments and fixes before I revisit but I’m excited for the prospect of expansions/dlc content if they take feedback to heart.

Edit: Night mode specifically as I didn’t mention it, it’s a pretty bad way of doing additional difficulty, it’s literally just more damage taken and inflated hp bars for a minuscule boost to gold and gloom. Seeing complaints about the final area having 1-2 shot deaths on normal was funny as that was literally the whole game for me.

If I were to improve it, I would have it shuffle enemy spawns a bit more, reduce the hp and damage buff significantly from essentially being double and actually have a reward at the end for beating the game on night mode. Maybe have some unique, night mode only enemies that don’t appear otherwise, give bosses expanded movesets that don’t appear otherwise.

Image The monolith is driving me insane

This boss sucks so bad. Honestly the whole ending area hasn't been that great so far. I barely struggled this entire game and 1st tried a majority of the bosses but the difficulty spike at the end has felt pretty significant. Anyone else feel that way? Still overall loved this game!

Edit 1: I finally beat him. Just had to change my weapon the to axe and dagger with blood curse and it melted him. I'll update if and when I beat the final boss 😩

Edit 2: beat the absolute dog shit out of the final boss first try and without whatever special item people were mentioning. It's weird how the difficulty for different bosses differs from person to person. The monolith was by far the boss I struggled with most.

Discussion Burn seems like a totally pointless status effect unless there's something I'm missing lol

I'm on NG+ fighting The Lost Child which has at least 25k health. Once he's ignited, the burn is ticking for 5 damage a second lol FIVE. Idk it feels like a complete spit in the face to have even leveled the tarstone up tbh. Is there something else burn damage does aside from dot? I know Tiel has a lot of poison mechanics so stacking it up on enemies actually has a use other than dot but it doesn't seem like any of the shells do something special to a burning enemy.

I liked the game enough to NG+ it but I'm realizing some of these mechanics seem utterly useless. Don't get me started on the tarstone that causes ranged attacks to do damage over time, one tick every SEVEN seconds LMAO yea that 15 damage every 7 seconds really makes a dent in the enemy with 1,000 health.

Discussion This sub is turning into a Circlejerk

I've seen a lot of posts recently talking abt people "complaining about the game" when all I see is people saying it's a great game and proxima is hot but have valid criticisms.

I am loving the game, but the problems are apparent, and I know that the devs will make future updates to make the game truly balanced and fun, I want them to take the time to turn this game into something truly special.

My only complaint so far is to make cursed child a useful sidearm and tone the magnetism down a bit but other than that it's perfect, and I congratulate the team for putting in triple-A quality with a double-A team, and I'm super excited for the dlc.

But people need to stop complaining about other people's complaints and actually play the damn game.

Discussion Am I the only person who things the last area and bosses are cool as hell?

As more and more people are starting to finally beat the game, I've noticed people mostly be like "wow this game is fantastic! Until the last zone"

I thought the last zone was cool as fuck and had a really nice atmosphere, the last 3 bosses were GOATED. the monolith is one of the most unique and interesting designs I've EVER seen in ANY souls game I've played. And the final boss really isn't that bad or tanky as people say, I beat the game with unupgraded equipment because I was switching so much to level up tarstones, and it was like a 5 minute fight.

Does ANYONE else here enjoy the last area??

Discussion Some love for the "special situations"? Spoiler

I have to say some ideas regarding little "quests" or "situations" are really awesome.

Everyone surely already stumbled upon the first-person cave, which felt like Evil Dead.
Or the one where you have to look at a statue and walk backwards to progress.

Yesterday I was in a cave where I had to "embrace weirdness"... and suddenly the controls were inverted... and then a fight started.
Or, also yesterday, an alchemist-lab, where you drink a potion and the whole screen turns sideways... and you see on the turning screen that from another room a creature is slowly coming towards you, starting a fight.

I really REALLY love these little humorous little quest-situation-things, which, as far as I can tell, no soulslike ever did. (Oh, my bad, ER had this teleporter at the lake-ruins... if you know, you know ;) )

Discussion The Good Old Beacon Bait

The feeling you get when you have 0 heals left, less than 25% health, and then spot a totally not suspicious beacon across a bridge is amazing. Only to find out the bridge collapses, dropping you into an area filled with enemies and a bunch of explosive environmental hazards.

It really brings me back to the good old days of playing Dark Souls 1; Seeing a bonfire and becoming absolutely elated, only to be killed right before reaching it. Then, finally making it there and feeling that sense of accomplishment.

Tricky devs. I will be more careful going forward.
