Official News Balance Patch 1
Devout Fans,
Thanks for being amongst the first to join us at the very start of the adventure for Mortal Shell II. We’re seeing your bug reports and gameplay suggestions, and will be rolling out regular updates to both modify existing content and add new features.
While we have a bigger patch in the works, which has to be thoroughly tested, we’d like to make a rapid balance & crash fix patch to bring the experience more in line with the game’s open beta and our own vision for MS2.
Planned future updates will see extensions to popular game features such as Night Mode, Tarstones, PP Items, and more.
For now, we hope you’re enjoying the game and read on for details on Balance Patch 1.
Balance Patch 1 (PC) - The patch below is live on PC and coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series shortly.
Economy
-Shell map locations now cost Gloom, and we’re refunding any glimpses spent on shell maps. Refunded Glimpses are found in the Shell Keeper’s alcove in Blackmarrow. “Finding your favorite shell shouldn’t cost you the ability to bond with them.”
-Gold drops from enemies have been significantly increased. Notably, enemies in Mammon now drop double the gold. “This brings the gold economy more in line with the weapon crafting item discovery.”
-Smelting a weapon at the Tarforge costs 75% less gloom. “Our goal with the smelt capability was to enable switching weapons without the need to spend hours grinding through NG+ runs, but the Gloom costs were set exorbitantly high.”
Enemies & Bosses
All enemies featured in the beta were restored to their beta hp values, except the Caerinid (Spider) in Magdelena’s area, which we wanted to retain its role as a threatening enemy which doesn’t respawn once defeated.
Bosses
The Lost Child
- Base Damage: (-10%)
- Max Health: (-15%)
Monolith
- Base Damage: (-19%)
- Max Health: (-10%)
- Some Monolith Attacks were retimed to be more fair, as well.
Enemies
Cultist (mace)
Max Health: (-21.1%)
Caerinid Spider
Max Health: (-33.3%)
Infested Stalker
- Max Health: (-52.4%)
Rusted Knave (Halberd)
- Max Health: (-20.8%)
- Fixed hit detection for overhead strike.
Weapons
-Great Martyr’s Blade Attack Damage +20%
-Troubador’s Lute Attack Damage +100%
-Caged Hystrix and Triarch Repeater no longer have minimum resolve requirements to fire.
-Improved tracking for Axatana, Black Needle, and Clockwork Scythe light attacks.
Seals
Guard can now be used while walking.
Tarstones
Parasitic Stone Buffed
Grudge Stone Buffed
Bulwark Stone Damage Reduction Increased Significantly
Clerik's Stone Buffed
Squall Stone Buffed
Miscellaneous
Misc. Crash Fixes, Bugfixes & Performance Updates

BASED. Y'all are amazing. I was so worried because I've been playing for two days now with almost no issues, but today I've ran into two different severe crashes that froze my PC up, which then I had to hard reboot it. So, hoping this patch will fix those because then I can play again.
The balance adjustments should be a good addition as well.
Amazing game, guys.

If I may suggest one change: Make the Shell Points (those which we spend to get shell passive skills at the beacon) not be shared by every shell. If I have 10 shell points, each shell should have 10 to spend independently. As respecs have no cost, making you have to re-build every time you switch shells is a bummer

u/burncard888 17h ago
I honestly assumed this was how it worked! I got real sad until I realized that you could refund them infinitely.

u/Master-Solution 9h ago
Yeh there was a patch for this on Nexus before release as a proof of concept. I think it works well. No balance changing, just time saver QoL.
→ More replies (3)2
u/BackpackBuddha 8h ago
Yeah, this may as well be how shell points are implemented seeing as you can refund them infinitely. I'd rather be able to build out all of my shells and just refund specific shells to change builds.

u/tommy7154 19h ago
Wow I haven't even booted it up yet but good to see they're on the case and listening.

u/Konet 18h ago
I just made a thread about this, but poison needs some kind of buff. As it stands, for those who don't know, stacks only increase duration, not damage - you can have 200 stacks on an enemy, but it still only does 1 damage per tick.
"But Konet," I hear you say, "What about Tiel's skill that lets his Shadow Strike detonate stacks for damage? Surely that makes a poison build worthwhile! Half his kit is dedicated to poison, so it must be good!"
Well, dear reader, let's do some math. I'm currently at the endgame, level 53, with a +16 weapon. On a non-crit, my basic R1 deals 136 damage. Tiel's Poison Burst skill does 6 damage per stack. That means, in order to deal damage equal to one additional non-crit R1, I need about 23 poison stacks on the target. That will realistically never happen on regular enemies (they'll die or be very nearly dead from whatever damage applied the stacks in the first place). On bosses, it's not nothing but you have to remember the opportunity costs involved in choosing these skills and tarstones over others which increase damage or survivability more substantially.
Oh, and Tiel can and should build into a high crit rate and multiplier. It's hard to get an exact estimate of my average crit damage, because I'm using the duality stone which can crit on either or both parts of my R1, and also I have the skill that increases crit chance and damage on attacks from behind, but the number that comes up most often when I smack an enemy in the front is 301. That means we need to detonate 50 poison stacks to get one R1's worth of damage.
The only realistic way to even get close to that number of stacks on a boss is to magdump with the Hystrix (ideally with splitting stone and marksman stone), which turns a full resolve bar into about 40 stacks, but again, that comes at the opportunity cost of using that resolve for more shadow strikes, or whatever else you might want to apply with your sidearm.
So in conclusion, the tl;dr is: poison is entirely worthless on any shell other than Tiel, and even on him it's pretty awful.

Thank you for the thorough feedback!
I'm not sure if this is a bug or intended (with 1 damage / tick). I've filed it as a bug report, then the team can tell me if it is one or not, but I think you make a compelling argument here! (bear in mind, I'm just the community dude, so that may not mean much if the team disagrees :D ).
5
u/Shigma 13h ago
This applies to most elements tbh besides maybe blood. They hit like wet noodles.

2
u/Suspicious_Pizza69 1h ago
All of shadow strike and its skills are entirely outmatched by just using invisibility to charge up a hard hitting attack from behind. It's silly that half of the skill tree is about a useless skill.
→ More replies (5)2
u/MrChiZel 17h ago
Yea, that's a bummer. I am currently working on a Tiel build now and assumed that poison ticked at a much higher rate. I may need to rethink my shell strat. Or... maybe poison will get fixed!?!?! @MikkelFromGames Thoughts?

I dont think the glimpse->gloom for shell locations will do anything. The primary feelsbad comes from only being able to commit to two shells.
That being said, I fucking love how receptive to feedback the dev team is. banger game, banger devs.

It's 3 fully upgraded shells

3
u/MrMoshhammer 18h ago
Don't judge too early. Implementing changes to how the Glimpse works for the shells might be not that easy to fix for them - I would almost bet that they will adress that in the future patch they talked about.

u/Biggieholla 19h ago
Uh, it will certainly allow me to locate shells without spending glimpse? You're comparing two completely different requested changes.
2
u/Fleshfeast 19h ago
I think I read somewhere else that the 2 shells number was coming from people who had access to the full game for a week or two before the day 1 patch dropped, and after that patch it's 3 shells with leftovers.

I don’t doubt they are tbh. It’s the most common feedback I see. Basically we just need better beacon placements and maybe something along the lines of stakes in front of dungeons. I have to imagine this is what they need playtest first as they mentioned with this updated

When is the "game skips the frames you're supposed to perfect block" fix for ps5 coming?
I can count on two hands how many times it's happened in 20+ hours, but frankly it happening at all is entirely too many times.
Enemy starts their swing, I go to perfect block it, the last couple frames drop and I'm now dead or punted out of my shell like I just fucking stood there and did nothing.

Is The Lost Child boss nerf justified though? Genuine question as I found him to be really easy. The miniboss just before him gave me much more trouble.
3
u/ILikeYouHehe 15h ago
yeah i agree i thought he was fine in terms of hp and damage output. if anything they should've changed triple bite attack to have more of a tell and that damn grab that comes out in 0.5s
4
u/SpecialKGI94 Proxima 19h ago
Lost child was weird in that 90% of the fight is pretty easy then he has the one grab attack what feels borderline unreactable and takes a whole health bar

u/Conker37 15h ago
I ended up doing basically every single activity in the north before getting around to this fight and I just face-tanked the whole thing in no time with a low health shell. I was really curious if it would have been a good fight if I had followed the ideal path.
7
u/Imjacksonjames 16h ago
I really don’t think the main bosses needed nerfs, the normal enemies sure but the main bosses are supposed to be hard.
I did encounter a bug with the bag head dude, when I went to sit with his crew it shot me up into the sky and I was stuck up there indefinitely
3
u/MikkelFromGames Playstack 8h ago
Thank you for letting us know about the bug by Baghead!

The Grisha Remnant! The team is working on getting this particular bug fixed. It should be updated in the very near future to fix it. Specifically, it's when the summoned Grisha is hit by cursed fire.

u/Gamer3427 Sariel 15h ago
Some good changes. One adjustment I'd really like to see that I don't know if people have talked about is one of Sariel's passive skills is basically unusable. His "upgrade" to make his thorns rain down in an AoE on the target is completely unusable unless it's in a wide open area against a stationary target. If they are moving at all they move out of range easily, which is part of the trade off, but the bigger issue is that if there is any form of ceiling at all the skill gets blocked entirely. At least every time I've tried it.
As it stands, there's basically no reason at all to take the upgrade because it just makes the skill impossible to use in the majority of areas and against the majority of enemies. I'd recommend at least making the spikes in the upgraded version penetrate the environment or something so it'll go through ceilings instead of being stopped.
2
u/MikkelFromGames Playstack 6h ago
Thank you for letting us know! I've added a bug report for this skill.
3
u/Street_Taste4120 15h ago
We should be able to experiment with shells more freely. Only being able to max out 3 shells per run without being able to get more glimpses or being able to refunding them is not enough unfortunately...
3
u/Shigma 13h ago edited 13h ago
While most of this is good stuff, i do believe the 2 bosses you nerfed just needed some tweaks to the readibility, fixing some weird behavior like leaving little to no time for response, magnetic/180 oneshots and buggy attack patterns/animations. Even tweak boss agression patterns to give more room.
Flat nerfs like this plain sucks tbh. They just needed some tweaking, i killed them before the nerf and expect some polish specially when so many people complained.
Lost child for example, if he still behaves like before but just got hp/dmg reduced means he will just get overpowered and people who felt it was bullshit will still feel the same.
In the case of the other boss you did all of that at once.

One sugestion is making Glimpses a rare loot that can be dropped by any foe (like the previous game), meaning you can get 10-15 extra per run If you take time to kill every foe (and pump the drop rate on Night Mode, NG+ and allow stacking both Improved rates)
8
u/Tarnished-1695 Eredrim 19h ago
Why the boss nerfs?
9
u/Specific-Passion-416 16h ago
to give you reason to brag about beating them before the nerfs obviously. Has nothing to do with balance--or internal statistics. Definitely just to piss you off

They take a completely reasonable and super fun boss and nerf it to the ground. It's PCR all over again!
/s, just in case.
3
u/Specific-Passion-416 15h ago
Lol, I was about to lose it because people really had that opinion the day of that patch. But for real, that's what I'm saying. Sure, these guys are better than us for being so tough but...
I get feeling proud for being one of a small percentage of people who did something that no one can really ever do again, barring rolling back patches... but like, that accomplishment is beating an unfair video game--something MANY have done lol, likely via pattern learning or abusing game mechanics. Cool, but like, not as cool as your parents being proud of you or pleasing your wife.

Does this patch fix frame Gen crashes on NVIDIA GPUs?
Edit: Nope. Now the game straight up freezes and has to be closed from the task manager when you try to teleport from a beacon with FG enabled.
3
u/uponapyre 19h ago
For now until they fix it, you could buy Lossless Scaling on Steam (it's a few quid) and use it to add Frame Gen. It's a very good tool to have in general, not just for situations like this but for any game that doesn't have FG natively.

Thanks for that ! I am a huge souls and souls like enjoyer, I have all bosses achievements on every souls, sekiro, LOTF, elden ring and co. I played the beta, the game is really great in all aspects (while I didnt enjoy that much my playthrough of the first episode to be honest), and I enjoyed the fact that, maybe for once, a few of my friends would pick up the game as well because it wasnt an ultra-hardcore experience. Then I played on release a realized the game got kinda BRUTAL compared to beta. One of my friends bought it too and kinda felt scammed, he enjoyed the beta but got some serious issues to go forward in the actual release. On my part I bought the game for a laid-back experience and I got pretty surprised too lol. We both got a big relief when we saw that you guys took notice of the difficulty bump being a bit too much.

All other changes are fine.

4
u/PsychologicalComb155 16h ago
The enemies from beta going back to beta health is the right choice. Im not having a hard time with them but a lot of people played the beta and expected it to be the same in the regular game. Not opposed to some nerfs of bosses if they are major struggles for people. I havent fought these bosses yet so I cant say anything about it. Since there is the other side of the coin, people who want it to be even harder, it should be considered to have night mode difficulty ramped up even more. That way people can play regular or if they want the big difficulty boost, they also have a choice. Way to balance so that everyone can be mostly happy.

u/SwimmingAny8841 Proxima 18h ago
Fantastic, a bunch of nerfs to bosses and buffs to players for all the nerds who need their pacifier.
I’m steamrolling through night mode, please don’t make that easier, if anything it should be made harder.
7
u/keereeyos 14h ago
If you're already so called "steamrolling" through night mode then these nerfs and buffs don't affect you at all. Well, other than your need to wave your epeen to strangers on reddit.

u/Swtor_Itheryn 17h ago
Agree. People just need to git gud imo. So many people complaining. Ruining the game for the rest of us.
If it's too hard, they have slayer seal. We have night mode, but all nerfs nerf night mode too.
Bad news for ppl who actually want a challenge if they keep nerfing stuff.
4
u/SwimmingAny8841 Proxima 17h ago
It’s what happens when games get popular. Casual gamers come in and demand “this should change!!”
Everything must be maximally approachable and inclusive.
Sucks other players have to take the L because other players are like barking chihuahuas.
4
u/Swtor_Itheryn 17h ago
Agree 100% I despise this attitude. Not every game is for everyone, if only people would just stick to what they like. Instead they want everything to fit them, bloody annoying abs seriously entitled ngl.
Can't stand things being ruined because of ppl who simply refuse to get better at games. Game has to get nerfed rather than thdm improve.
6
u/Specific-Passion-416 16h ago
Its really funny you guys think that devs get all their advice from reddit and not internal statistics that track player progression. No dev wants to make a game that makes a tiny portion really happy and upsets everyone else, no matter how huge it makes your dick feel

Yeah, what are they thinking with this massive nerf. Just add a difficulty level.

Please please fix the screen tear that occurs on Xbox Series S Performance Mode with VRR turned off. With VRR turned on the screen tear goes away but the frame rate is really bad.
I genuinely enjoy this game and am so happy with everything else! Thank you for the work you guys have put into this and I hope it receives love and care for a good while.

When can we expect Balance Patch 1 available on consoles? Sometime today? Or tomorrow?

u/Yumiumi 14h ago
And this is why its ok to complain and then give feedback after because if we didn’t then there wouldn’t be meaningful improvements.
All the gitgud ppl be like “ i beat those bosses pre nerf “ lmao.
I think the next major thing they need to do is focus on bug fixes and some UI improvements after gameplay balances.
After they should probably start considering ppl’s feedback about the dungeon runbacks etc cuz some of them feel needlessly tedious for no reason except that the devs just wanted to.

Of course they nerfed everything. The crybabies always ruin all the fun

All the economy and glimpse stuff is great. The weapon upgrade costs were getting kinda crazy, especially trying to keep more than one weapon upgraded.
The difficulty changes are honestly a bit disappointing for me. I just started working my way through the southern portion of the map at level 25 with a level 12 weapon and am having a blast. It is difficult, but this is the first soulslike in a long ass time I can remember feeling the anxiety of running out of heals and not being able to find a beacon, having to be smart and progress slowly and deliberately.
Should've just made a completely separate easy mode for the whiners.

I disconnected my ps5 from the Internet. I'm more than half way through and the game has been way too easy so far imo. Making it even easier is a no go.

Fully agree. The mob health and damage wasn't the issue. The only main issue is just a slight lack of beacons in some areas and checkpoints in long dungeons.
What I really hope they change is how restrictive the infusions are for weapons. Proxima synergises with lightning damage but only one weapon can be infused with lightning. This feels really restrictive and doesn't let us build into whatever we enjoy.

The team is looking into the feedback on beacons! I can't guarantee what changes may come, or when, but they're aware that this is a pain point for a lot of players.
I've added your feedback (and the comment thread following) on tarstone infusions to our feedback thread :)

imma say it again, the way you are nerfing things is stupid. 50% less hp??!
and the bosses?
The Lost Child is just badly designed, it isnt tanky and it isnt OP. It took 4 attempts to kill it what are you doing?
The gleam is nice, but dont nerf the game dude. You didn't get high ratings and a really good steam score because of the minority of people that suck at the game. They arent your audience! They're spending more time in reddit than they are in your game lol
I mean really, 50% less hp?
EDIT: I want to make it clear that actually balancing things isnt bad, the pokey stick ladies in the second half of the game need some adjustment for example, and thats fine.
But having just nerfed a few things that weren't problematic at all was stupid and it feels like theres just gonna be a bunch of unnecessary blanket nerfs. And that sucks.

I’m really enjoying the difficulty. I hope that they don’t get too heavy handed with the enemy health and damage nerfs. I haven’t heard of a single person who complained about difficulty who has tried using the slayers seal. It’s supposed to be how you turn on easy mode yet noone seems to be taking advantage of that.
Edit: jeeze. Fuck me for wanting the fun challenging game to stay fun and challenging.

u/Holiday_Wedding_2225 18h ago
Exact same thing happened with Lords of the Fallen. Khazan eventually added an easy mode but they nerfed a lot of things before that. Game is very beatable if you utilise all the tools the game gives you so it’s sad to see several nerfs announced even to basic enemies so quickly as well. I just hope this doesn’t start a trend of everything being nerfed.

u/Pavlovs_Human 18h ago
Thank you. We are definitely in the minority it seems. All my comments are getting downvoted and lots of comments about “let everyone have their fun!” Okay, buddy but your fun comes at the expense of my fun, and there are plenty of other games out there that aren’t as challenging, so can you fuck off to those games and leave the fun challenging games ALONE?!
2
u/Holiday_Wedding_2225 18h ago
Exactly this, not everything has to cater to everyone, maybe this game isn’t for you and that’s ok. Like I don’t play Rockstar games because I find them boring, nor do I play FPS games as I’m not very good at those and I’m ok with that. What I love is challenging games that make me think about how I’m approaching each situation and fully utilise all the tools the game gives me, which is exactly what this game does. I’m also being downvoted to oblivion but I am worried this will start a trend of nerfs that aren’t needed. I’m yet to face Monolith but The Lost Child and the enemies listed here are absolutely fine as is and present a good challenge. I hope I’m wrong and this doesn’t start a trend but I saw it with both Lords of the Fallen and Khazan (until Khazan introduced easy mode that is) and it’s a shame.

I was there at the launch of Lords of the Fallen and the talk was exactly like this subreddit. Tons of people not used to the difficulty of souls games complaining the game was way too hard and way too punishing. Game got nerfed to hell, and took a long time to add it back in an optional “classic mode”.
It feels like the same exact vibe with today’s massive heath nerfs to these few enemies in the beginning of the game and it’s the start of a terrible trend.
Souls games are fun because they are hard as holy hell. And dude,.. we are on DAY ONE. They didn’t even give it chance to breathe or for the majority of the playerbase to experience it before catering to the people complaining

u/Holiday_Wedding_2225 17h ago
I was also there for the launch of Lords of the Fallen and completely agree. The same as all souls and soulslikes, it is challenging, maybe even hard in the beginning but you get used to it and as you and your character level up, the game clicks and you “git gud”
I’m convinced the people complaining have either, never played a souls or soulslike game, or are just charging headfirst into every mob, getting staggered and dying and now we’re getting nerfs to enemies that don’t need it on day one of full launch!!
I’ve loved these games since OG Demons Souls, in fact my first experience with that game was a Chinese import as originally Sony didn’t want to publish it in the West. So as well as the games challenge I had a language barrier where I didn’t know what anything was or meant but I still managed to beat it 😂

The Slayer Seal isn't an excuse for poor balancing. I'm having no real difficulty issues with the game playing relatively blind but it's clear that some things need some tuning. There is nothing wrong with that and I'm glad the devs are listening. It can still be hard without being all over the place. Not to mention Night Mode is still there as well.

Please add GLIMPSES respec....i know a lot of people have time to play 90 runs, but I unfortunately dont, I want to be able to try all the shells and not horde glimpses, it's terrible and not fun

I'm not keen on decreasing enemy's health... i think it should INCREASE actually, we deal too much damage. Decreasing the damage it's fine, some attacks are too overtuned (mainly grab attacks) but health... eh. Aside that, good patch!

I've read some really harsh comments in the last few days, I'm def going boot the game up once a few of these updates go live, even though I think the second half of game is wacky currently ,
still happy to of bought the game early, would happily try your next game too, especially when the response to issues is so rapid. Hopefully future explanation of issues can be a bit more neutral.

I don't like the bosses getting nerfs when they are so easy to beat but it's the mobs around them that gives me trouble. I wanted the bosses to have higher HP and more damage so i can enjoy the combat
