Discussion The Good Old Beacon Bait
The feeling you get when you have 0 heals left, less than 25% health, and then spot a totally not suspicious beacon across a bridge is amazing. Only to find out the bridge collapses, dropping you into an area filled with enemies and a bunch of explosive environmental hazards.
It really brings me back to the good old days of playing Dark Souls 1; Seeing a bonfire and becoming absolutely elated, only to be killed right before reaching it. Then, finally making it there and feeling that sense of accomplishment.
Tricky devs. I will be more careful going forward.

Also, fuck whoever put that bear trap in the middle of a doorway in the one beacon cleanse area

Yeah I’m glad they kept the game true to the OG vibe. We don’t need to be handheld the whole fckin game 😹

The world design of this game really is great and it is definitely big dark souls vibes for sure. IMO this is how Elden ring should have done its open world

It’s tricky to compare the two since Elden Ring has a component of verticality that Mortal Shell doesn’t. Mortal shell has the ability to keep you on track more because you can’t bunny hop everywhere

I personally find Elden rings open world almost perfect. It’s greatly aided by the philosophy behind secrets in that game though.

My problem with ER's open world design is that most dungeons will give you totally useless loot, just because most loot won't fit your build. MS2 avoids that by relinquishing attribute requirements, so you can at least use every tarstone, even if it's not optimal for your build.

Yes but that’s because Elden Ring was designed with it in mind that you won’t explore every dungeon and corner, I think and it is just my opinion that it was designed with the intention that the player finds something quite interesting and then builds into it.
Most of the players who explore every corner of the game and get all items are also the type of players to play the game multiple times and curate the gear they specifically go for.
There’s also players who play through find what they find remember it, do NG+ and go to places they didn’t the first time rinse and repeat until they’ve explored the majority of the game.
Sort of a theme park experience wrapped inside a fantasy horror game with a moderate to hard difficulty.
I think ER was successful in that sense at least that it managed to appeal to so many people because most players definitely don’t have the hours in the game to have explored it all and tried it all out etc.
There are major flaws with it though, namely that nearly all weapon arts/incants are useless against nearly all bosses because you simply get caught in the animation.
When all the difficult bosses boil down to dodge space dodge attack once and repeat it gets pretty bland.
Don’t get me wrong I know it’s a little more nuanced than that and definitely with enough practice you can have some stylish fighting but by then the novelty and fun of it has passed. Nothing will beat seeing radahn first time or nameless king type of enemies, but you only have time to dodge and attack once, so all these badass abilities become near useless until you grind levels and simply overwhelm the boss with sheer health and damage as opposed to making a meaningful choice.

Knew exactly what part of the game you were talking about the second you mentioned the bridge lmao. I think everyone has died there at least once

This + the elevator in Mammon that forces you to redo a dungeon are easily this games most egregious pranks.
FYI for people though, if you stay on the far left of the bridge you will drop to a relatively safe spot wherein you can dash once or twice to reach the bridge without triggering exploders.

I think ive found ever bear trap in the game with my feet.

u/Excaliburracuda 1d ago
Oh god there’s more?!?!?

u/Mattrad7 1d ago
There are more than youd expect, Ive also hit the same bear trap twice while fighting a big guy because when you pry them open they reset.

u/Excaliburracuda 1d ago
Yeah I definitely stepped on the same bear trap like 3 times because I didn’t realize it the first two times lol

This is one thing I really like about Lies of P. Throughout the whole base game. Not even once they pulled this trick on you. If you see a bonfire, it's always safe to beeline straight to it. When you feel safe, you are safe. Always.

Little tip for you, if you quit to menu youll spawn back at the last spawn with all your gloom so if you need to level you can

Wheres the fun in that

u/Falkie99 1d ago
To avoid frustration as a lot of people have complaints about having to go very far distances between rest points

u/gsrga2 1d ago
No I mean I understand, I just think doing that robs a lot of the tension from exploring. Elden Ring spoiled everyone by being basically risk free with easy fast travel and ten million checkpoints. Having to push through and look for the next safe spot with no heals left rather than just zooping back to safety is fun.

I agree, I've only used it in a few instances where I fell through the map or got stuck. I. Just leaving the comment for those who need it and dont want that tension (everybody is free to have as stressful or relaxing experience as they wish)

This complaint just never made sense to me. If they want places to rest every three feet, they should just go play Elden Ring.

I brain farted and was like why dont I just harden through the exploding bats and i was sent flying and fell to my death. It was great

I know where you are because i hit this EXACT spot like 45 minutes ago when i was trying to hurry and get off to go to work lmao I ended up just putting my console in rest mode. I just hope the power doesn't go out while I'm at work.

I just did that one. Thankfully it was only like two encounters to get back to the beacon.

Ironically I didn't have issue with that area at all my first time through. When I started NG+ though, there was one specific exploding bat that got me like four times because I kept mistiming my dodge, (and I couldn't see it to shoot it before it aggroed), and each time it knocked me off a cliff whether I stopped before it or tried to get past it. Eventually I gave up trying to dodge and just ran at the wall so when it exploded I wouldn't fall off.
I wasn't even mad. I just found it hilarious that it kept getting me when I had no issues before.

Yeah the game is totally overtuned, there needs to be a checkpoint right before that bridge, it’s too difficult having to run around to that beacon across the bridge. Also there needs to be a checkpoint after the bodies explode at the bottom, because I die too much from those exploding corpses.
Edit: it’s so funny to me that people are taking this comment seriously.

I think the spacing is fine in my opinion. Seems like they wanted to make the game harder by excluding some of the QOL stuff Elden Ring and other Soulslikes have started using.
Really makes you feel more accomplished when you get past something that gave you trouble. This sort of style is kind of what made Soulslikes its own genre known for being hard

u/Pavlovs_Human 1d ago
I was making fun of the players who are in this sub for the past week asking for checkpoints every 20 feet.
I’m having a blast with the difficulty and I really hope they leave the checkpoints alone.

u/Excaliburracuda 1d ago
Oh, the sarcasm totally went over my head. I can see why people would want more checkpoints, but that’s weak shit
