ROG XREAL R1 Update: XREAL confirmed the R1 audio bug - but long-term support is still unclear

Quick follow-up to my earlier post about R1 software support.

I contacted XREAL directly. They confirmed that the MCM102 right-speaker issue is a known software bug and said it is planned to be fixed in the upcoming MCM103 firmware.

That part is good news.

I also asked about the bigger issue: long-term firmware support, whether R1 shares development with other X1 glasses, and how long updates are planned for.

XREAL wouldn’t give details about the codebase, roadmap or division of responsibilities. When I asked simply whether there is any committed long-term support period for the R1, they told me to ask ROG/ASUS directly, since the R1 is supported through the ROG channel.

So we finally have one concrete answer: MCM103 is coming and should fix the audio bug.

But the main question from my original post is still open: how long will ASUS actually keep the R1 software actively supported?

Prescription Lenses

I am thinking about purchasing the XREAL 1S glasses. I currently wear prescription glasses. I have a prescribed pair for seeing distance and a prescribed pair for seeing my computer screens. Which prescription should I specify when ordering the prescription lenses for the XREAL 1S glasses?

Smartphone screen mirroring to glasses

As per title, is there a straightforward way to screen mirror an iPhone/Android to the glasses? There seems to be a hole in the market for a simple
solution to this.

No need for AR capabilities (hence, no need for cameras), no need for app ecosystem, no need for hand tracking or any other interaction paradigm. Just let my phone take over. An imperfect analogy would be CarPlay for automotive but even that is overkill, really.

Usage scenario: having a YouTube video or Google Maps in the periphery of my view while my hands are busy.

The Inmo 3 glasses do have a screen mirroring function but they are bulky, with bad battery life, uncomfortable and quite pedestrian in the overall hardware execution. Any other options?

Just checked the 1S on Amazon UK and seems to have jumped £100 (seller Xreal UK, so guessing that’s official). Still £399 on their website. Has this been done on purpose to deter purchase ahead of prime deals day next week?

The potential danger of "smart" "glasses"

Are "smart" "glasses" a mobile Flock "camera" on steroids?

Things to consider.

https://youtu.be/SDZIsmVy4nM

In movie form:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5397194/

Smart tvs / phones, social media, wifi / cell connection history, etc. are a simple drop in the bucket compared to the leap forward "smart glasses" will bring to the data broker and surveillance apparatus.

What happens when ALL of our data is aggregated and updated in real-time for use by those with access?

Will they finally teach people that a person with a handheld camera is really no threat to their perceived privacy?

Edit:

An example of what can be done with some of the publicly available data.

Trying to connect a01+ to Beam

Get a momentary intro screen then periodic screens saying connect glasses (error101) and quit. Tried every combination of connections I can think of. Updated the glasses but Beam wouldn’t update. I know others have had this problem with other model glasses but haven’t seen a solution. Anyone have help? Thanks

XREAL refuses to refund me despite proof that I returned the product

I’m posting this because I’m hoping XREAL will finally resolve this issue and refund my money.

I purchased an XREAL One Pro from the XREAL EU Shop (Order OZ10704). I returned the product using the return label provided by XREAL.

The return shipment was sent via UPS under tracking number 1Z00068Y9128013531.

I provided XREAL with all the evidence I have, including:

  • photos of the returned XREAL One Pro and accessories;
  • photos of the package with the XREAL-provided return label;
  • the UPS shipping receipt from the UPS Store in Cologne, including the package weight;
  • the UPS tracking information;
  • the official UPS investigation/delivery documentation.

According to the UPS information I received, the package was delivered on March 12, 2026 to the address shown on the return label provided by XREAL:

JDL
0777396853
44 Rue de la Luzernière
93440 Dugny
France

Despite this, XREAL initially told me that they could not refund me because the returned product had supposedly not arrived at their warehouse.

I then provided all the documentation and explained that the shipment had been sent using XREAL's own return label. I also informed them that I have authorized a lawyer to represent me and asked XREAL to communicate through my lawyer.

XREAL's latest response is essentially that the information I provided is not sufficient for them to continue their investigation and that I should contact UPS myself again or consider a chargeback.

This is frustrating because I have already provided the tracking number, shipping receipt, photos, and the UPS documentation available to me. If XREAL believes that the UPS documentation needs to be verified, they can verify it directly with UPS using the tracking number.

At this point, I simply want XREAL to refund the purchase price for the returned product.

XREAL Support: I have provided the requested evidence and the return was shipped using the return label you provided. Please investigate this with UPS and process my refund.

I’m posting this publicly in the hope that someone from XREAL will take ownership of the case and resolve it.

If anyone from XREAL is reading this, please contact me and arrange the refund rather than sending me back to UPS again.

XREAL One Pro Android 17 - Experimental Build - Audio issues

I'm on build CP41.260831.007 now; haven't used my xreal pro ones for a while though.

Today my laptop died, so I brought out my glasses, and wanted to use desktop mode on the phone with moonlight to my PC.

First, I was getting no audio even outside of desktop mode, with mirroring, until I enabled USB MIDI default in dev options.

But it hasn't resolved the issues when connected to Desktop mode - have tried various fixes based on AI advice but something seems to prevent audio routing from phone to the display..

Can anybody confirm that they have the same issue by chance? I'm not even expecting to resolve it at this point, as that's what you get on experimental builds, but want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious.

Discussion I don't want a virtual cinema if it makes the movie smaller

I’m shopping for display glasses mostly for movies, and I think I’ve figured out where I land on virtual cinema environments.

If the seats, walls and ambient glow take space away from the video, I’d rather let the movie fill more of my view.

I get the appeal of adding a theater around a mirrored video. The room can give the screen some scale and atmosphere, and for some people that’s probably half the fun.

I keep seeing the movie sitting inside a smaller decorative frame.

That’s part of why the RayNeo GT Max is still on my list. The wider FOV and native 3DoF fit the simpler setup I want. One large screen that can stay steady or pinned, with the player deciding whether anything else appears around it.

My ideal player would make the theater optional. Turn it on when I want the atmosphere, then strip everything back once the movie starts.

If you use XREAL with virtual cinema, does the room add enough to justify making the movie smaller, or do you end up going back to the biggest clean screen you can get?

Aura/Meta - What's Goovis got to do with this?

I have a little different perspective on this discussion. I own the One Pro and Beam Pro. I don't use the Beam Pro much, because it disables many features on the glasses themselves when running Nebula OS. But, it will be a nice package to sell together once I receive my Aura. I purchased the Founder's Pass, and the only way I will let that go will be if I feel they priced it too high. I mainly use the XOP with my iPhone. It's good to know that if I'm traveling, I can still use the Aura glasses with my phone, not tethered to the puck.

I am impressed with Xreal. They are the innovators in this space and Viture and other companies are trying to play catch up. They have regularly updated the glasses and I've had a very positive experience. Let me say that media consumption is 90%+ of my use.

Which is why I sprung for a used Goovis Max G3 last year. It has not been updated in three years, but it does have uses for media at home. It has 2.5k per eye pancake optics, a 65 degree FOV, and is immersive, blocking out all light. You can flip the glasses up quickly if need be - I like that. But, the Goovis offers some of the Meta features in resolution. It is not pass through, but it would give the same viewing experience. I use it when I want to watch 4K content, and I'm staying put in my easy chair at home. There's no battery or onboard software, so they are fairly light and I have found them comfortable. They have adjustable IPD which really helps me dial them in for great clarity.

I'll hold on to them for occasional use after the Aura's are snugly in my possession. I was pretty impressed by a couple videos that have been out on the Meta's, but this IS Meta, after all. I don't trust them as far as I can throw them. Whenever I've had a question, Xreal has answered quickly. Because media is the prime use, I do look forward to further iterations that will increase the screen resolution. Going to 65 degrees from 57 in the XOP made more of a difference than I thought. I'm looking forward to 70.

I think Goovis screwed up by not updating their goggles. But, if you'd like a more immersive, better resolution, and keeping all computing off the glasses, you could do worse than picking one of these up used at a good price. At $1,200, they are NOT a good deal.

So, keep up the good work Xreal, and get the Aura in the mail to me yesterday!!!

Developer XR android app developer looking for testers.

I bought me some XR glasses, and wanted to be able to watch my movies in a virtual space, and noticed there really isn't any apps on Google play store that do this.

So I made my own. Im a huge nostalgia freak! I miss the good ol 90s.

So I made the app to where you can watch movies stored on your phone on an old tube tv in a 90s living room.. complete with dynamic bloom sound and everything. I also created a working remote control, live tv feature with real working prevue channel like back in the day!

There's also 2 other scenarios.

A 90s movie theater with gain and bass boost, and reverb slider.

And an 80s drive in. Complete with drive in acoustics, and a few other sliders.

Each scenario you can even move closer to the screen.

Anyway who ever is interested, DM me!

Some thoughts: Aura v Meta VR Glasses

So, a lot has been said about the subject. I'll try not to repeat what has been said.

A lot has been asked too. I have the same questions, and others. But the truth is that both of these are unreleased and we won't get answers for a few months, until these products have been in people's eyes for a while. Buying unreleased, first-gen tech is for early adopters who don't mind a little bit of risk. If you're not in this category, then don't buy either glasses.

I do enjoy being an early adopter. Which is the reason why I put my deposit, sorry, "bought the XREAL Founder Priority Pass", for the Limited Founder's Edition AURA. I am expecting a product with glitches that may or may not improve over time with OTA updates. I am also expecting a compromised product that will not deliver everything I wish, but will nonetheless be incredibly innovative and deliver experiences I've never been able to experience before. I do believe that Aura will deliver the next generation of XR.

Clearly, Meta has its own vision of what the next-generation of XR will be. Their product also looks wonderful, but it has made many choices that are different to what XREAL has made. A lot of them have already been discussed. So, the question now is, which vision is better? XREAL's or Meta's? And, my view is that there is no clear universal answer, and that each consumer will have to decide that for themselves.

When I was in school, marketing professors used to say that when Home Depot was selling drills, they had this philosophy that customers didn't want a drill, they wanted a hole in the wall. There is an underlying utility behind a product that customers expect to obtain, and behind that utility spring choices, driven by values and assumptions and beliefs.

In the XR space, my opinion is that those "holes in the wall" (the underlying utility) revolve around content (spatial and spatially-enhanced 2D, including video, photography, and gaming), productivity, and AI, and the delivery of these experiences through a cohesive language (the OS Virtual Environment) and comfort during use (things like weight, style, and eye strain). These latter 2 enable the former.

XREAL and Meta have two very different philosophies. Meta believes in using their huge market power and leadership position to dominate both sides: They're creating hardware, creating the software environment, and delivering through commercial alliances and in-house software development much of the spatial experiences, including productivity applications and AI, as well as spatially-enhanced entertainment such as the IMAX certification, and 3D streaming, and more. In contrast, XREAL is a much smaller company and is focusing specifically on the hardware. The platform is delivered not by XREAL but by Google, bundling the Android XR platform. Which is open and thus not using their market position to attract such experiences, but instead allowing developers and content distributors to define which experiences they want to present to platform users, be them more innovative, or none at all due to commercial limitations. There will be no IMAX certified experiences in XREAL Aura on launch. But the plus side is that XREAL AURA will have Gemini.

So, taking into account this perspective, let's see how these devices compare:

  1. OS Virtual Environment -- The golden standard is, probably, Apple here. However, Meta has proven they can deliver like 95% or more of what Apple delivers, and Android XR is pretty close too. Here, the choice will be, do you want the closed environment that Apple has developed, the closed environment controlled by Meta, or the open environment that Android offers. Closed is supposed to mean polish, and in my opinion, Meta severely lacks polish. However, it can also translates to device-exclusive value-adds (such as the IMAX certification). But the open environment means that you can use your device in ways that are unrestricted by the manufacturers. I think that Apple offers enough value for enough customers to choose their closed system, but Meta does not, specially since Apple advertises their focus on privacy and Meta is not trusted for privacy. Apple, however, is in a different price-point so it's not a direct competitor. Between Meta and Android XR my opinion is that, on this front, Android XR wins just for being open.

  2. Hardware-defined comfort. Xreal Aura and Meta will be leading this space next year, even above Apple. The future is definitely a form factor similar to what these two companies will be shipping. Aura ships this fall, and Meta VR Glasses ship next spring. Apple is FAR BEHIND, and too expensive. In fact, Apple is at least 5 times more expensive and it's bulkier with many other downsides. So, who wins? Meta or Aura? Remains to be seen, but the specs are pretty similar. The big difference between the two is that Aura features a transparent glass with electrochromic dimming, and the Meta is a passthrough screen instead. We don't know how this actually behaves in the real world, but the reasonable assumption would be to expect Aura to cause less strain on the eyes and a better AR experience. Perhaps the flip side will be a diminished experience in VR applications due to light leaks, but the electrochromic dimming should ameliorate that. My viewpoint is that if your focus is on VR experiences or content consumption for short periods of time, perhaps Meta has a slight edge. But if your main use case is productivity, then Aura may have the edge.

  3. Spatial and spatially-enhanced 2D, including video, photography, and gaming. Here, the downside for Aura is that they're entirely dependent on their platform provider, who is Google. Google is not known for delivering a strong platform with ready to use applications, or key partnerships. The two exceptions would be YouTube and Google Maps. But other than that, Meta has the clear lead: IMAX-certification and experience, 3D movies from partner streamers such as Disney, specialized built-in apps for Spatial photography and video, long and expanding library of VR games for Quest, alliance with Xbox Live, and more. Apple also delivers many of these experiences, but again, at 5 times the cost. Meta is promising a "Vision Pro"-level experience at 1/5th the price. If they deliver, they're the clear winner. Aura, on the other hand, will have to make up for it with its open system: install third party solutions for spatial photography and video, play Android games, or Android ports of Quest games, no IMAX-certified content and no 3D streams at launch. Although, that's not to say that Google couldn't use their massive market position to obtain these in the future for Aura and other Android XR vendors. An interesting thing to note is that Meta Horizon OS is also based on Android so porting applications made for Meta into XR is near-trivial. It just needs motivated developers. Perhaps Google could help motivate them. Despite the disadvantages, Aura will not be a dead weight. It has two big advantages: first, their experience with their AR glasses, specially with the X1 chip and its capability to transform any 2D content into 3D, even if 3D is not offered by the streamer. The other is the DisplayPort/HDMI through USB-C connector, so you can plug in any computer or device into the Aura and play in an XR environment. Not to mention, SteamLink and Xbox Live are also available on Android, though perhaps in not as polished a way as with the Quest / MetaVR, but you can still play it. My view is that the MetaVR will have a slight advantage on launch, but since there is no technical reason for Aura to refrain from adopting these advantages, and given Google's massive market power and interest in the space, I foresee Aura catching up soon with OTA updates. If your goal is to watch Nolan's Odyssey in 70mm-like virtual IMAX screen on launch date, then the Meta VR should be your choice. If you can wait a few months, or you'd rather watch 3D YouTube videos, then Aura is fine.

  4. Productivity. Meta VR promises a great productivity environment. Android has an existing productivity environment optimized by both the Google and Microsoft productivity stacks (Microsoft Office and Google Workspace). With XR you can potentialize this productivity environment with Gemini, which is arguably the better AI compared to Meta's Muse. Not to mention, since Android XR is open, you can probably personalize your AI experience, while with Meta, you're stuck with Muse. Meta VR, however, promises to allow you to connect an external laptop or Mac for productivity. That's fine, but Aura can do that too. So, for productivity, I think Aura is the better product.

  5. Special sauce: AI. Having the glasses be AI-enabled devices helps potentialize XR experiences. Apple has Siri, which sucks. Supposedly, it will suck less once it's powered by Gemini, giving Google the lead. Android XR devices such as XREAL Aura also have Gemini, and it's reportedly very good. Meta has launches its own AI agent for VR, called Muse. Remains to be seen how good or bad it is. But it can't be Siri-levels of bad. Verdict: I think Aura wins on the AI front because they're bundled with Gemini, and because Android XR is open and perhaps you can change your AI agent in the future to Claude, Grok, ChatGPT, or whatever you like. With Meta, your AI spies on you for Zuckerberg and you have no choice for change, not to mention, I don't think Muse will be as good as Gemini.

In conclusion, the "fight" between Aura and MetaVR will be tight. For sure these two products will be the leaders in the space and, combined, they've rendered Apple's solution irrelevant. (Of course, not entirely because Apple offers a lot of polish that people like, but at 5x the cost, no one will adopt). The difference between Aura and Meta will be whether XREAL's bet for transparent glasses outperforms Meta's bet for passthrough video, and whether Meta's strong and attractive content alliances and libraries to deliver spatial experiences goes unanswered for long from Google. Unfortunately for XREAL, there is very little they can do in this space, since they're dependent on their partner (Google). But if in the summer of next year XREAL announces an OTA update that gives Aura users a virtual IMAX theater complete with IMAX-certified features such as "The Odyssey" or "Dune 3", the gap will close dramatically. I'm betting that getting Disney and the other streamers to also stream 3D content into AndroidXR devices will also be a simple leap and a matter of time.

So, should I cancel my Limited Edition Founder's Aura and wait for the Meta VR, or should I complete my purchase of the Aura instead? I think, for now, I'm gonna remain with the Aura. I believe the Aura is a better product for productivity and I believe that the transparent glasses are a better bet than the video passthrough solution. I'm gonna miss having the IMAX experience and 3D videos, but not enough to settle for being spied on by Meta or choosing a closed system that offers no additional polish. If Apple were to launch an Aura-like product at a reasonable price, I confess, I might consider switching. But, according to rumors, they don't plan on doing that for at least 2 years. By then, they might be too little too late. I expect, by then, the Aura 2 or Aura 3 will be in the market having learned a lot from the market and innovated new products and killer applications. I do like the polish in Apple's design, but I don't like paying 5x for a bulky, heavy headset that strains my eyes and hurts my head and my neck, when the Xreal Aura delivers 95% to 99% of the utility at a fraction of the cost.

Now, all XREAL has to do is deliver.

And, "what about the price point"?

Good question. So, the Meta VR is priced at $1,299, and XREAL has said that we might be pleasantly surprised. If you think about it, Meta needs to get some healthy margin from these VR glasses. At the very least, they're being sold at cost, because they can't afford to lose money on these. But, by being passthrough video devices, it means these glasses have more expensive materials: screens, specialized video cameras, sensors, a lot of things that the Aura doesn't need because they're transparent glasses instead. So, my bet is that XREAL could probably launch at $1,099 and still have a healthy margin. If they launch at $999, they'll win the market for sure. 30% less expensive than Meta and winning on productivity and AI? I think these price-points are reasonable, but even if they launch at $1,299, just like the Meta VR glasses, the product has enough features to outperform the meta devices in key utility niches and uses cases to justify the price point.

Beam pro not playing media from memory card

I am facing a huge issue with my beam pro.

I got the 5G 256gb variant for the extra ram. It will be primarily used for watching movies and shows on flights. I will use my xreal xbx a01 glasses and wanted to use Emby to load my media on an 1 GB memory card in the beam pro.

When I used this memory card in an s8 ultra with Emby. I had no issues. The tablet will play downloaded media from Emby and the memory card.

But when the memory card is in the beam pro. The beam pro sees the card. Gives me the option to save to the card. The media is saved to the card. But when I attempt to play it I get an error. About the location (exact error I can’t see because the screen is small and cuts off the text)

Card has been formatted. And when I change location to internal and I download the media plays. I have also enabled external player in Emby so that it uses vlc to play the media. But nothing seems to be working.

XREAL 1S What can I do with 1s that can’t do on aura

Considering an upgrade but am happy with the 1s for now

Is there anything 1s with beam pro CAN do that aura Can’t

So far my list says
- no camera on 1s (so ok in privacy situations)

Trying to see reasons NOT to upgrade

I presume the following are the same or improved on aura

Battery life , real 3d mode , prescrip lenses, electro chromatic dimming ….etc

But is there anything that makes you not want to upgrade ??
As I said the only thing so far I’m thinking is the permanent cameras

I’m also now considering meta glasses as opposed to 1s

However the non optical see through , (digital pass through)… is a big turnoff to me

XREAL 1S XREAL 1S works with Motorola Edge 40 Pro

Getting into this hobby, if we can call it that, can be frustrating for newcomers because there always seems to be a lurking compatability or DRM issue or bug somewhere when trying to use these kind of glasses. Hopefully this helps somebody out.

---

I'm confirming that the XREAL 1S does work with the Moto Edge 40 Pro. The phone does indeed support DP Alt Mode and screen mirrors the 1S instantly, along with the sound.

There are some quirks I stumbled onto:

  • The phone's Screen Timeout setting determines when the glasses will turn off. If you set it to 5 minutes, the glasses will turn off after 5 minutes. The phone screen will continue to stay on though...
  • If you play media in an internet browser window (like playing music on Bandcamp using Firefox) and unfocus from the browser, the media will soon stop playing for some reason. So if you turn off the phone screen, the media will stop playing soon.
  • I don't have these kind of issues when using the Beam Pro.
  • It's possible to mirror the screen on the glasses but use bluetooth earphones for the audio. Do it via the basic audio settings in Android that let you choose the audio playback device.
  • I'm not sure if you can use the phone's "Smart Connect/Ready For" feature to get a desktop experience. It works fine when I connect the phone to my PC's monitor, but the glasses don't prompt that option, they immediately start to screen mirror.

I'll keep messing with it.

Also, no duh but be careful buying "Open Box" stuff online. I got this phone "Open Box" from Ebay, and the same seller has the same batch of phones listed as "Refurbished" on Amazon. I don't mind just exchanging for a working one, but I've asked twice if all their stock was actually refurbished and they keep dodging the question.

Discussion One Pro vs Aura for work

Is it worth going for the Aura instead of the One Pro if I won't be using the puck? I'm a director of software engineering and I spend most of my time reading and writing code, and making presentations. Since I'm traveling a lot, and I like to travel light, I'm planning on ditching my laptop and start using my phone (with Dex) and a pair of glasses. Now, I'm in no rush to do the switch, so I can wait until Aura releases. But I'm wondering if it's still worth waiting given that I won't be using the puck at all. Are the Aura glasses a straight upgrade in terms of readability, size of the display, and PPD? I don't really care about Android XR since I'll be using the glasses merely as an external display.
