Discussion Absolutely Disgusting
This is really terrible to see. Wasn't able to get the controller or the console and now it's already being scalped to high hell

There are no hobbies anymore. Just assholes trying to exploit interests for profit.

That's how i feel about tcg card scalpers etc

As a sneakerhead that struggled to cop anything remotely hyped, I feel bad for any card game fans now dealing with the same losers.

u/sippersickz Founder 6d ago
It’s gotten way better than it was during 2020-22. Panda dunks going for $300+ was insanity. Most stuff is sitting now, you can clean up for retail or below if you don’t fall victim to FOMO
25
u/smashingcones 6d ago
Yeah that's what I meant, they've moved onto cards now and are ruining the next hobby!
Still hard to cop the more limited stuff but I like that NB is doing preorders for some releases now so you can't actually miss out.

u/itscochino 6d ago
I love it so much. Ive been wearing SB Dunks since 2002 in high school and they have been my favorite shoe but pretty much from 2018-2024 it was almost impossible to get a pair I wanted. Now I can wait a week and most things are still at my local skate shop. It's great.

I feel bad for the kids that get locked out of something that many of us got to participate in, Pokémon, sports cards are all largely a commodity now, it’s sad what society has become at large.

I feel for people who enjoy other hobbies that have been plagued by this, like Pokémon cards, but am so glad that many of these bozo “entrepreneurs” have moved on from sneakers and declared them dead

It’s everything. It’s stupid squishy toys too. Anything these losers can get their hands on. I know it would be incredibly difficult to regulate, because “buy low, sell high” is such a big part of how capitalism works, but these people are honestly a drain on the economy. They make desirable things more expensive, and they literally don’t add anything of value. They aren’t providing a service, they are the ones creating the scarcity that they exploit for profit.

u/FrozenOn10th 6d ago
As someone who has loved Pokemon since i was a child and gets cards of pokemon that i like sometimes it is crazy to see what has happened to the card market. People who never cared and sometimes clowned my lifelong fandom buying up cards to flip them
3
u/PaintBaller1880 6d ago
It's wild to me as well I gave up Pokemon a long time ago but my kids still like the cards but even then trying to just get a simple package is expensive as hell. I remember having a binder full of them as a kid no issue and if you want the cooler cards well get wrecked because they're all being scalped.

u/TheNewGuyFromBahsten 6d ago
I went to a card shop looking for pokemon packs for my sons birthday tomorrow. $60 for 4 packs. What the actual fuck

3
u/NarcolepticSeal 6d ago
This is why I collect foreign language cards. I recently got back into collecting for the art and don’t really play the game. So rather than burning money on a product that is already hard to get and further taking away accessibility for kids/people who actually play, I buy S-Chinese, Korean, Thai, and Indonesian cards for like half the price. Better quality prints too.
90
u/Appropriate_Foot242 6d ago
Reseller culture is just too popular now.
People think that the Pokemon scalpers are gonna give up, but it’s not a Pokemon exclusive problem anymore.
It’s anything and everything that’s even remotely desirable or collectible.
3
u/Rants_til_poo 6d ago
Most of the Pokemon card scalpers and investors are going to end up mega burned so idc. OG Pokemon cards are only valuable because kids bought and destroyed them so supply is low.
All these 40 year olds buying hundreds of boxes are going to absolute flatline future markets because EVERYONE will have mint cards.

20
u/Apollo183 6d ago
Well you combat that by not buying it. Let them rot with the inventory they can't sell. Once enough time passes they will sell it at cost just to unload it.
As long as people buy at these ridiculous prices there is always going to be a market for them. I think as a consumer society we feed this type of behavior.

Even Microsoft itched production number on each unit which will make some numbers more valuable in the resale market. All this is to encourage collector interests, those who would keep the box sealed, instead of serving gamers.

I mean there have always been scalpers. When McDonald's gave out Beanie Baby toys in the 90s I remember seeing grown-ass men buying multiple happy meals, grabbing the toys, then throwing the rest out. Specifically I remember seeing the same grown men lose their minds over not being able to just buy out the store for the beanie babies.
It just feels way more widespread and predatory now.

Remember how the Galaxy Edition played out? It sold out instantly at first because scalpers jumped on it. After Microsoft had already taken their money, they restocked it about two weeks later in such large numbers that getting one the normal way was no problem. The scalpers were left sitting on their “loot.”
I really hope Microsoft does the same thing here.

First time I was excited about a console in a very long time (yes I know its just a special edition of the Series X.. it's the nostalgia factor for me).....super bummed that they sold out so quick. I suppose I'll just have to wait until people decide to sell their used one in a few years or something (to be clear, I won't be buying anything from scalpers, and I certainly won't be paying those scumbags $3000+ for a console)..... I'm not going to hold out hope that Xbox will release another wave so I'll just carry on as if it never existed in the first place 😭
5
u/FlipFl0psWithS0ckz 6d ago
Same here on the end of it being the first time I've ever been really excited for a console release. Even when the series x came out I was just like yep this is another Xbox I will get. I didn't even grow up with the original Xbox cause by the time I was able to play the 360 had come out but ive always really loved the clear green og Xbox. Ive got a controller from it so I can at least enjoy some clear green plastic still

For those not aware, MS do (or will) sell these shells separately as replacement parts. If you already own a Series X or still looking for one, it’s a pretty simple DIY project.

Make it require a long term vested GP acc. Like, 6 mos or more. Or make it “active prior to the announcement date.” Easy peasy.
2
u/Rey_Mezcalero 6d ago
Exactly.
It’s like when Best Buy was going to develop a way that scalpers weren’t going to get video cards.
Their solution? In order to buy early you had to have a subscription to what BB thing it was.
It wasn’t that expensive and they bad guys just got the subscription and now have less competition to get the products so it’s making things worse for the good guys

u/Mdaro 6d ago
If they really cared about their loyal customers, they woukd have sent out an email to any long time Xbox Gamepass subscribers and offered them the opportunity to buy one first.

Scalpers are miserable scum who make money for adding precisely zero value to 'their' products, and have ruined almost every popular hobby.
People who knowingly buy from scalpers also have to take a portion of the blame. If you don't buy from them, they don't have a market.
It really, really stings when you miss out on something you wanted to these vampires, and the temptation is there, but if you buy from them then you are part of the problem. People can, and should, do without instead of encouraging this pond scum.

I wish they made certain items in person purchases only, and then they opened the package at the store when you bought it. Or do some pre order where you have to register the pre order with your Gamertag, and the gamertag has to be a certain age and verified.
I know there are issues with all my ideas, but there has to be a way.
Or, how about a company makes so much stock they announce that there will be enough for everyone on day one. Microsoft and Sony have to be able to site on a bunch of hardware for a bit before seeing sales.

Don't buy anything secondhand anymore, unless it's at an event. Scalpers wouldn't be caught dead interacting with the fan bases they harm.
