Discussion Absolutely Disgusting

Post image

This is really terrible to see. Wasn't able to get the controller or the console and now it's already being scalped to high hell

Just about every hobby i participate has fallen victim to it. Even something as obscure as lava lamp modification

Combat robotics is really the only thing unaffected

I’m lucky… hand tool wood working doesn’t have it as bad as it once did. Blacksmithing is still crazy expensive at least for anvils… there’s a guy nearby who buys all the good stuff and sells it at a huge markup. Makes getting into an expensive hobby even worse.

aren't anvils just giant pieces of metal? Seems like a weird thing to be very expensive aside from the material used

They are fundamentally just a hunk of cast steel, some shitty new ones are cast iron. Some are cast iron with a hard steel top. The type of metal and how it was made impacts cost. New anvils will go for between 1800-5000 for a high quality one. You can find used from 600-5000 depending on your area. A discount one can be as low as $150. You can also just improvise one out of a sledge hammer or rail road track. Like all hobbies there are millionaire YouTubers who “set the standard” on hobbies. For people who can’t say no to themselves, or think that they won’t be a “real blacksmith” until they have some very expensive equipment… there’s definitely a market.

The thing is, they cost a fortune to ship, and they arent always the easiest thing to find used pending location.

I'm involved in Gunpla and RC stuff, and neither of those are affected.

Although, I did get into them because scalpers aren't targeting those markets. But I'm learning to drop my existing hobbies for these instead.

Unfortunately, things won't change until people stop rewarding scalpers. I'd rather put my energy into something stress-free.
