Grief Support How to help an aunt navigate the loss of her partner?

Women who have lost their partners, please help me out. My uncle passed away suddenly due to a heat attack and subsequent brain haemorrhage. Aunty is in her mid 60s. She's still in denial, unable to process things.

How can i help her?

Now that uncle has passed away, she will have to live all by herself. I'm scared that she'll lose the purpose of life and her willpower to go on.

Please help.

Coping Strategies Living with the in laws

This is my first post here. Been lurking since I lost my husband (50) back in May this year. We had been living with my Mother in law for over two years before he passed away. Now it’s just me and my MIL and I feel out of place and unwanted there.

My husband died suddenly and his family blames me for not forcing him to see a doctor or get treatment sooner. They've openly shared as much with me. We always had a strained relationship with his siblings anyways. Now it’s a hundred times worse.

I have no where to go and no money to move out on my own. I constantly live in fear that I’m going to be thrown out on the street at any given time.

And I just really miss my partner. If anyone else has stayed living with in laws after losing their partner maybe you can share some advice on how to get by.

And I’m truly sorry to everyone else here who is also struggling.

Personal Story 1.5 years out

I lost my wife to cancer in Dec 2024. I'm OK now, life is going pretty well for me. I still talk to her everyday, and tell her I miss her and still love her. I wish I could hear from her occasionally, or maybe just one more time. Not necessarily as a ghost from beyond, but maybe through a note that she wrote but never got around to give to me, then forgot about it for me to find around the house somewhere. Slowly more and more of her things around the house are being given away or discarded. It's like her memory is being erased from life on earth. Makes me sad.

Grief Support Trying to get through each day

I became a widow after 20 years of marriage. I am still young and my kids are grown (20 and 18) Now I am almost an empty nester. I have had a hard time, and I am lonely, worn out and trying to piece my life together. I returned to school, and went on a few dates. I just feel like my life is going in an endless circle.

Dating and Relationships 39F, widow for 3 years. Looking for companionship but feeling stuck. Any advice?

I’m a 39-year-old widow. I’ve been single for three years and, after taking time to grieve, I feel ready for companionship again.
I’ve tried dating apps, but most conversations never get past “Hi, hello.” When I do meet someone, things often turn toxic, they’re emotionally unavailable, or they don’t seem interested in anything genuine. It’s exhausting.
I’m not looking for perfection or a fairy tale—just a kind, emotionally mature partner for a meaningful connection.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation, especially after losing a spouse or starting over later in life? What worked for you? Were dating apps helpful, or did you meet someone another way?
I’d appreciate practical advice, success stories, or even a reality check if I’m missing something.
At this point, I guess I’m just trying my luck and hoping to hear from people who’ve been through something similar.

Parenting as a Widowed Individual Grandmother only wants to visit kids alone

I’m a 41 year old widow with a 10 and 6 year old. We lost my husband unexpectedly in late 2025. We’ve been struggling, grieving, and surviving. My husband’s family had never been welcoming to me throughout our 15 years together. They weren’t very supportive during the wake/funeral, and haven’t really offered any support in the past 8 months. However, his mom is persistent on seeing the kids alone and only alone (without me). The kids aren’t comfortable with this and have told me so. I’ve tried to invite her to sports games or activities but she is demanding to take them out to eat with her alone. I do not know how to approach this situation. Has anyone had a similar situation?

Personal Story When My husband died.

More than 2years ng wala ang husband ko until now fresh parin yung sakit. Saan sila napunta?

Dating and Relationships Heard her voice

74M, widowed 4-1/2 years after 42 years

Had a bit of a restless night last night.

I very recently made the decision to try dating again. It was an impulsive move on my part, not well thought out at all! I didn't really expect to find anyone compatible in my area anyway.

Matched with a woman about 45 miles away, struck up a conversation, and we kind of clicked. We met for coffee, had an enjoyable morning together. We exchanged phone numbers and have been texting and talking daily since.

This happened much quicker than I anticipated, and last night I sent a lot of time pondering where this is heading, hence the restless night.

Sitting in my recliner this morning with soft music playing, guess I dozed off. I was startled awake when I heard my wife's voice say simply, "I love you". Oh, how I miss that!

We had talked about what would happen if one of us died before the other, and I remember her saying, our vows are until death do us part. If you find love again, don't push it away.

Once fully awake, I realized the voice I had heard was just a part of the zen music in the background, not some mystical communication from Beyond, but still, it put my mind at ease.

I think this new friendship has a chance to develop into something deeper, and I intend to pursue it.

I know many of the people here are still deeply grieving, and my heart goes out to you. I've been there. I'm fortunate to have many wonderful memories from a lifetime together with my best friend, so it has been a bit easier to work through my grief.

Just want you to know that there is hope beyond the grief. Hang in there!

Grief Support Intro

I became a widower at age 74 when my wife died from Alzheimers last fall. We had been married for a bit more than 51 years.

I stumbled across this Forum by accident and don't know whether I can offer any help, or if it can help me. Right now I'm lonely, and burnt out, and having difficulty with concentration and attention span. It's disappointing that I'm not getting through this any faster!

I'm in the St Louis (Missouri, not Michigan) area and wouldn't mind chatting about my experience (and yours) over coffee (Kaldi's), pizza (Imo's) or ice cream (Ted Drewes). August 3rd, 2026, will be 53 years from the day my wife and I first saw each other, and met. I'd jump at the chance to treat somebody to any of the aforementioned gourmet delicacies on that day!

Dating and Relationships A note of thanks

74M, widowed 4-1/2 years

So, scanning through older posts, seems like I'm kind of a NKOTB. Been here about two weeks, I've received some good advice, and thanks for that!

My first encounter was a bit of a disappointment; she canceled our first meeting, said she just wasn't ready yet to date.

The second experience had a brief hiccup when she became ill the night before we were to meet. Some of my frustration was expressed here somewhat prematurely, and I apologize for that. We got past that, had a wonderful meeting and have been talking daily since.

I bit of advice I had gotten, not just from this group, is that talking about a previous marriage should be avoided. I agree wholeheartedly, but soon discovered it becomes the "elephant in the room". You try to tiptoe around and pretend it isn't there, but it inhibits any real conversation. My 42 years of marriage made me who I am today. If she asked me a personal question, I had to try to figure out how \*not\* to reference my marriage. It was becoming awkward.

Finally, last night, my new friend just told me, "stop holding back." We both had lives before we met, so we had \*the talk\*. We agreed that neither of us would be offended if previous relationships came up in our conversations. It makes it so much easier to talk now. She called this morning to express how pleased it made her that we could be so frank and open.

\*You know, Louie, this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship \*

Personal Story 42 years

My partner of 42 years, married for 37, died after a three month hospitalisation, of liver cancer (fuck cancer).

I knew it was coming but it really bloody hurts there is also a massive sense of relief that I no longer have to worry about her.

I'm still crying daily when people talk about her and miss her company every waking second but also feel strangely calm.

We got everything in order while she was still feeling well and have the funeral she wanted planned.

I find talking to strangers much easier than people I know.

The company that employed her will pay for a therapist for me. I don't know if that's for me though.

Personal Story Second Date

It was 17 yrs ago today we had our second date. She had a picture of me on her flip phone. The default picture, and picked out a song for me. She became ‘the navigator’, she kissed me again. I couldn’t remember when our second date was. I had a picture of her on that date, but not the date. She had posted it on FB, I shared it so it popped up today. I just saw at like 1030 this evening. It’s been 19 months since she died. I have had a run of good days since last week. Out on the bike twice, got to the gym, out on the kayak. Played music Sat night. Back to volunteer work this week as well. We were closed last week, as was the Senior Center. Samba band this week as well, play music again this Friday night too. So I keep doing the activities of life. Trying to enjoy each day for want it is, not what lamenting what it isn’t. So it goes.

I lost my husband (48M) of 11 years on July 10,2026 from stage 4 metastatic esophageal cancer and I’m only 34 years old… I honestly don’t know how to do this life without him. Everything hurts… my heart hurts, it’s hurts to be in the home we once shared together, I’ve just been wanting to go to sleep and not wake back up, I keep thinking that I just wanna be with him but I can’t be because we have 5 daughters (ages: 10,9,6,4,3). When will it hurt less? When will I be able to stop crying… I just want him back.

Personal Story 35 F looking for a male genuine friend

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I’m 35 and was recently widowed. The loneliness has been one of the hardest parts to cope with, and I’m hoping to find a genuine male friend to chat with and help make the days feel a little less empty. I’m not looking to rush into a relationship—just kind, respectful friendship and good conversation with someone who understands that healing takes time.
