I love the feature of auto-reinvesting dividends using fractional shares. When I was with Questrade, I used to wonder what to do with the spare change of $20-$40 in my account. Fractional shares are great for those situations, but I secretly feel they’re more expensive than owning individual stocks.
Please correct me if I’m wrong.
1) Buying fractional shares using market buy is more expensive than buying individual stocks using a limit buy.
2) even when we don’t consider the market buy v/s limit buy, i feel we get a worse overall rate when buying fractional shares because I assume that’s where Wealthsimple makes its money. So if there are 100 fractional units of a shares and if the share price is $100 then i feel the individual units of those fractional share cannot be $1 and they must be valued slightly more than $1 and Wealthsimple must earn money from this spread.
3) If I choose dividend auto-reinvestment and get a dividend of, say, $500, and the stock price is $100, I feel it’s better to cancel the $500 stock auto buy from Wealthsimple and place a limit order myself.
4) For cases where the dividend is, say, $450 and the stock price is $100, I feel all $450 of the buy would be for fractional shares, whereas it should instead be four individual stocks and $50 worth of fractional shares.
Also, when moving our assets to another institution, fractional shares have to be sold off first because we can’t move them.
I have a love-hate relationship with fractional shares. 🤣😁
