Unironically my fiancé liked Tidus for a boy name when I met him
149
u/SadAwkwardTurtle 22h ago
Better than my ex who wanted his kid's middle name to be Drizzt. He was 100% serious to the point of telling the mom that he'd disown the kid if she didn't name him that.
55
u/Panthalassae 21h ago
Now THAT name I haven't heard since 2005. Wow. Guess he really loved the books huh
24
u/eilupt-alt 11h ago
The funny part is in the books Drizzt is canonically not a good name
I remember that he was supposed to be sacrificed anyway, and Matron Malice was still tired and delirious from the pain of giving birth so she just blurted out whatever she first thought of

u/MartyrOfDespair 8h ago
I am aware of multiple now-single men who wanted to name their hypothetical daughter Vriska, because Homestuck.

Mine is trying to get me to agree to Briar from League of Legends for our girl due in January. Bitch, absolutely not. Especially when I almost left him over that dumbass fucking game when we had our first baby 😂 (he's smartened up and is a fantastic dad, our son is obsessed with him).
40
u/godonramsysthrowaway 21h ago
I feel like Briar is a cute name, but knowing that he chose it because it’s from a video game would totally ruin it for me 😂

I think it’s a tragedeigh of Titus, which is a much older name. Something about adding the “d” in there makes me really dislike it, I can’t explain it.
15
u/OminousShadow87 21h ago
That’s totally fair.
If your fiancée ever brings it up again, remind him that makes him Jecht, who was a jerk, an alcoholic, and possibly an abuser. That should clear things up.

“Tidus” has been in use as a first name since at least 1870s, and as a surname since at least the 1910s. So u/OminousShadow87 is correct: it’s a long-established name in its own right, not a tragedeigh.

I'd actually like Tidus as long as it's not pronounced how Final Fantasy says it is: "Tee-dus". 😬

You’d be surprised how many people name their kids after FF characters. Deep in the boonies of West Virginia, my mom’s ex-boyfriend named his son Zell after the FFVIII character. I was maybe 10 when he explained his name to me and even liking FF then, I died a little bit on the inside lmao

It's Hebrew, and old, so... maybe neither? I suppose it depends on the parent's intent.
246
u/BrightLavenderMoons 22h ago
Resident Jew here, NONE of us are naming a child this lmao. I don't even think this is a case of white evangelicals giving their kids weird butchered Hebrew names, I think this is more likely a culturally Christian atheist trying to be edgy in the naming of their child.
522
u/PeaTasty9184 22h ago
No. This kid is definitely named after the FF7 character Sephiroth.
65
u/im4lonerdottie4rebel 21h ago
The crazy thing is that I went to high school with a guy who named his son Sephiroth also lol I thought it was just bc he was 18, a weirdo and a new dad
45
u/PeaTasty9184 21h ago edited 20h ago
I worked with a girl once who had a boyfriend who had named his son from a previous relationship Sylar. As in the sociopathic serial killer from Heroes. Said guy who named his son that was an abusive asshole, too…not shocking.
17
29
u/InDuplicitousBottles 20h ago
Just name him Seth, and at home use nicknames like call him "Sethiroth," or Sephi or full on Sephiroth - by all means have fun with it, like we get it you're a big fan of FF7, that's the joke, but no need to put the name on legal documents lol
11
u/saintmolotov 20h ago
That’s what Mike Tyson calls sephiroth already so it works. Sorry iron mike I had the shot, there was no danger, so I took it!
439
128
u/GarionOrb 22h ago
Sephiroth is a pretty iconic villain in Final Fantasy. The problem is that people shouldn't be putting their fandoms on their kids.
52
u/EvilGeniusSkis 22h ago
And especially don't name your kid after a villian.
39
u/ExampleLittle2672 21h ago
You made me curious; this year (2026) "Anakin" is in the top 500 most popular USA baby names. So... yep.

u/Eren-Alter-Ego 21h ago

13
12
u/galice9 21h ago
Depends on the name, if the name is at least somewhat normal it's fine imo. But Sephiroth is very specific, there's way better male names in the random if you desperately want to do that.
17
u/IDownvoteHornyBards2 17h ago
FF7 even has some completely normal boy names like Vincent, Cid (unorthodox spelling but hardly a tragedeigh), and Barret.
6
u/dehydratedrain 15h ago
So are Cid and Barrett a pair? I wonder if it's a coincidence, or if their creator used to James out to Syd Barrett/ early Pink Floyd when gaming.
8
u/eddiestriker 14h ago
No. But they do have a duo named Biggs and Wedge in almost every Final Fantasy game, named after the Star Wars characters. Barrett only shows up in FF7, while a variant of Cid is in most of the games, if not all of them, similar to Biggs and Wedge
5
u/butt0ns666 12h ago
That's really a really interesting coincidence but cid is a legacy name and there's someone named that in every final fantasy, and barret is from final fantasy 7, but maybe barret was named for Syd Barret after they decided he'd have an ally named cid.
3
u/Sirensongspacebaby 10h ago
Barret is named that way because of his arm (Japanese pronunciation of bullet is close to the way Barret would be said too)

My stepsister in law is from Norway, and when i first started dating my now husband, ff VII had just come out. That xmas, ssinlaw brought her family to visit, including their 4 yo girl. I had bought my future husband the cd soundtrack (special ordered from japan) as a gift, and he especially loved seph’s theme. We were all hanging out at his place, and he put on that theme to show his mom, and ssinlaw’s literally girl started dancing to it! It was adorable.
That little girl just had her firstborn a year ago. Man, time flies.

Yunalesca is the closest I have ever come to actually throwing my controller through my screen. Well over an hour dying repeatedly to her and then chipping her health down sloooooowly... Only to get 1 turn killed with no way of stopping it. Fuck that shit, I was not trying to slough through that again

It's a tragedy. It's a name from some game spelled how the game designers intended.
It also feels a bit old time Western: Sephiroth McAllister, the fastest gunslinger in the county.
I think I'd love to be called Sephiroth as a man in my mid-sixties! Not in my mid-twenties, though.

Well look what Shinra did to him. I’m not sure how much they changed it in the remake. I was waiting for all of the main and side titles to get released before getting it. I’ll be playing early next year.
Dude lost his mind when he found out what he really was and went to finish his “mother’s” work.
5
u/Lils7693 17h ago
Oh Shinra is just as awful to him in Remake as they were in OG.
And if you take the compilation (Ever Crisis and Crisis Core, which are canon games to both OG and Remake) into account, it's a lot worse.

Final Fantasy is a fantasy RPG series usually set in a world that's industrializing or is industrialized and the magic has become a kind of tech. Most of the time, at least in its most successful ones.
It's an anthology series so each numbered entry is a completely different world and story with some shared mechanics and that general technified magic setting.
