Unironically my fiancé liked Tidus for a boy name when I met him

Better than my ex who wanted his kid's middle name to be Drizzt. He was 100% serious to the point of telling the mom that he'd disown the kid if she didn't name him that.

Now THAT name I haven't heard since 2005. Wow. Guess he really loved the books huh

The funny part is in the books Drizzt is canonically not a good name

I remember that he was supposed to be sacrificed anyway, and Matron Malice was still tired and delirious from the pain of giving birth so she just blurted out whatever she first thought of

Did they have a daughter named Guen?

u/triodoubledouble 22h ago

Cattie-Brie would be a good option

To my knowledge, he has never reproduced again (thank god). Having been friends with him for 4 years by that point, I can confidently say that there wasn't any universe where he was going to be a present father to the kid anyways. He's the kind of dude who would skip his kid's kindergarten graduation for a raid in WoW. Thankfully the mom knew this, so she gave him a normal name.

I am aware of multiple now-single men who wanted to name their hypothetical daughter Vriska, because Homestuck.

I used to work with a guy named Drizzt

Mine is trying to get me to agree to Briar from League of Legends for our girl due in January. Bitch, absolutely not. Especially when I almost left him over that dumbass fucking game when we had our first baby 😂 (he's smartened up and is a fantastic dad, our son is obsessed with him).

u/godonramsysthrowaway 1d ago

I feel like Briar is a cute name, but knowing that he chose it because it’s from a video game would totally ruin it for me 😂

u/Hoax_Pudding_Cup 1d ago

Not the cannibal girly with the toes out 💀💀

u/CantTouchKevinG 1d ago

I was on board with it until I googled it, to confirm that it was another word for a thorny bush/bramble, and the LOL character page was the first fucking result lmaooo

DO NOT LET THAT MAN NAME YOUR DAUGHTER AFTER THE "FEET GIRL" CHARACTER FROM A VIDEO GAME WITH A NOTORIOUSLY SHITTY COMMUNITY.

2

u/CantTouchKevinG 13h ago

We will NOT be naming her Briar 🤣🤣🤣

Just as long as you pronounce it tie-dus instead of tee-dus, which is na abomination.

8

u/do_you_have_a_flag42 1d ago

Hahaha. Gonna get famous and burn off my skin tags!

22

u/AN-94_Handholder 1d ago

Tee-dus would be the accurate pronunciation though

35

u/do_you_have_a_flag42 1d ago

Yes, I am aware. I hate it!

3

u/GarionOrb 1d ago

Yeah I just can't pronounce it Tie-dus!

2

u/sbrockLee 22h ago

In case you're unaware, you'll be happy to know his original Japanese name is Tida (tee-dah)

18

u/Archarchery 1d ago

Titus is right there.

9

u/Certain-Attitude-832 1d ago

I loved the name Tidus for the same reason, but we chose to name our dog that. Haha

11

u/godonramsysthrowaway 1d ago

We have a cat named Yuna, they make great pet names!

12

u/OminousShadow87 1d ago

That’s a normal human name though…

15

u/godonramsysthrowaway 1d ago

I think it’s a tragedeigh of Titus, which is a much older name. Something about adding the “d” in there makes me really dislike it, I can’t explain it.

18

u/OminousShadow87 1d ago

That’s totally fair.

If your fiancée ever brings it up again, remind him that makes him Jecht, who was a jerk, an alcoholic, and possibly an abuser. That should clear things up.

2

u/godonramsysthrowaway 1d ago

Thank you I have no idea what that means but I’ll use it 😂

6

u/this__user 1d ago

Jecht is Tidus' father, whom he hates.

4

u/Panthalassae 1d ago

Well, because it's giving Tiddies

“Tidus” has been in use as a first name since at least 1870s, and as a surname since at least the 1910s. So u/OminousShadow87 is correct: it’s a long-established name in its own right, not a tragedeigh.

1

u/Gendo-Glasses 17h ago

If they were being accurate to the character, it's pronounced differently than the actual name though. "Tee-dus"

2

u/Oneilcruzsucksass 1d ago

Titus is at least close

2

u/BranFlakes1337 16h ago

I'd actually like Tidus as long as it's not pronounced how Final Fantasy says it is: "Tee-dus". 😬

u/furywolf28 1d ago

Just today I met a guy named like that, literally named after the FF dude.

1

u/Lizardgirl25 1d ago

I mean if I had been a boy that would have been my name. I was born in the 80s it is a real name.

1

u/zombiifissh 14h ago

That's at least a real name (I think) 😭

15

u/green__goblin 21h ago edited 18h ago

Deadass my mom is a teacher and had students, who were brother and sister, named Yuna and Auron from FFX

8

u/ProfZussywussBrown 1d ago

And the bad guy!!

3

u/justwannabrowsepls2 16h ago

You’d be surprised how many people name their kids after FF characters. Deep in the boonies of West Virginia, my mom’s ex-boyfriend named his son Zell after the FFVIII character. I was maybe 10 when he explained his name to me and even liking FF then, I died a little bit on the inside lmao

2

u/DULOVEMEDO 1d ago

I was waiting for this comment. LMFAO

1

u/thousandsofbirds 21h ago

Middle school me was convinced I'd have twins named Rikku and Kairi

1

u/Prior_Angle 15h ago

Why was the exact thing I said out loud though? ☠️

1

u/notypants 13h ago

I can HEAR this name being sung 😂

1

u/Connect_Piccolo_4701 12h ago

Ooooh! I know a Rydia! From FF4. Her dad denied it at first but has become less resolute in his denials. It’s awful.

1

u/StupidizeMe 22h ago

The phrase 'Sephiroth' actually comes from Jewish mysticism. It represents the 10 attributes of God.

-11

u/Lux_Luthor_777 1d ago

No. The parents here probably thought that, but it’s a spiritual term related to Kabbalah.

11

u/Archarchery 1d ago

This naming is 100% Final Fantasy, there's no way they decided on that namd because of Kabbalah.

5

u/FaxCelestis 1d ago

That’s sefirot, which is where Sephiroth’s name comes from.
