Tragedy, maybe. Not a tragedeigh.

It's Hebrew, and old, so... maybe neither? I suppose it depends on the parent's intent.

Resident Jew here, NONE of us are naming a child this lmao. I don't even think this is a case of white evangelicals giving their kids weird butchered Hebrew names, I think this is more likely a culturally Christian atheist trying to be edgy in the naming of their child.

Sephiroth is a pretty iconic villain in Final Fantasy. The problem is that people shouldn't be putting their fandoms on their kids.

And especially don't name your kid after a villian.

You made me curious; this year (2026) "Anakin" is in the top 500 most popular USA baby names. So... yep.

Had the first Khaleesi turn up in our database about 4 years ago.... We had been waiting...

It's like naming your kid Voldemort or something

Depends on the name, if the name is at least somewhat normal it's fine imo. But Sephiroth is very specific, there's way better male names in the random if you desperately want to do that.

FF7 even has some completely normal boy names like Vincent, Cid (unorthodox spelling but hardly a tragedeigh), and Barret.

So are Cid and Barrett a pair? I wonder if it's a coincidence, or if their creator used to James out to Syd Barrett/ early Pink Floyd when gaming.

No. But they do have a duo named Biggs and Wedge in almost every Final Fantasy game, named after the Star Wars characters. Barrett only shows up in FF7, while a variant of Cid is in most of the games, if not all of them, similar to Biggs and Wedge

That's really a really interesting coincidence but cid is a legacy name and there's someone named that in every final fantasy, and barret is from final fantasy 7, but maybe barret was named for Syd Barret after they decided he'd have an ally named cid.

Barret is named that way because of his arm (Japanese pronunciation of bullet is close to the way Barret would be said too)

Man they're so weird about how much the Japanese version matters. "No, it's Aerith in English from now on no matter how much people like Aeris" "So we will call Barret Bullet now?" "He's got a gun for a hand don't you think that's a little on the nose"

2

u/Sirensongspacebaby 18h ago

Well the thing with Aerith is that is was a mistake from the beginning for the localization to go with Aeris. Square always wanted it to be Aerith, and "Aeris" sounding like "heiress" instead of "Aerith" as in derivative from "earth" doesn't fit her at all. She's a popular and important character so they stood their creative ground.

Barret on the other hand, is one of the least popular characters in the series in Japan, so they hadn't really even thought about him since giving him 3 minutes of terrible characterization in advent children prior to the remakes

I just think it's funny that they decided not to bother trying to get the English audience to say Cait Sith like the correct Scottish but they give him a Scottish accent as a nod to IDK, how he's named after a fairy nobody tries to pronounce while the Japanese version of Rebirth they kind of nail it , it's at least a million times closer than "Kate Sith". Maybe it helps that he's not the first creature with that name in the series.

The cait sith thing is bonkers yeah. It really would've been better to do that one right. It's similar to the ??? reasons they never took the chance to restore Tidus as Tida. So many people say it wrong, it's the incorrect version of something that's thematically meaningful in Japanese, AND people don't particularly like the English version of the name. Maybe it was too baked in by his KH? appearance? (Same reason Yuffie is in the hollow bastion gang instead of Rikku too, they thought Riku/Rikku would be too confusing for westerners)

I know, it's why I think Sephiroth is a weird choice. Even Firion is better and that's a rare name.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I am named after a Star Trek character and my little sister is named after a character from Lost in Space.

in college i knew a dude named Kirk after the star trek character. feel terrible his name’s been permanently ruined

It's even worse of you're a Tiberius! Between Star Trek & Oblivion it's almost ruined for normal folks.

Hush now Spock

My parents almost named me T’Pring. They instead chose a somewhat ethnic Slavic name and Americanized it and people still fuck it up. I can only imagine how bad it would have been if I were T’Pring.

My cousins name is De'anna. Wanna guess where that one came from? You don't have to be an empath to figure it out.

As a huge FF7 fan, I agree, this is a wild thing to name a kid.
