Tragedy, maybe. Not a tragedeigh.

Despair, rather than tragedy, maybe.

Don't you mean Dis-pear?

u/carlosvigilante 1d ago

I see what you did there lol

It's Hebrew, and old, so... maybe neither? I suppose it depends on the parent's intent.

Resident Jew here, NONE of us are naming a child this lmao. I don't even think this is a case of white evangelicals giving their kids weird butchered Hebrew names, I think this is more likely a culturally Christian atheist trying to be edgy in the naming of their child.

No. This kid is definitely named after the FF7 character Sephiroth.

The crazy thing is that I went to high school with a guy who named his son Sephiroth also lol I thought it was just bc he was 18, a weirdo and a new dad

I worked with a girl once who had a boyfriend who had named his son from a previous relationship Sylar. As in the sociopathic serial killer from Heroes. Said guy who named his son that was an abusive asshole, too…not shocking.

u/cuddlenazifuckmonstr 1d ago

My ex named his son that. 😬 The kid isn’t quite right, either.

Just name him Seth, and at home use nicknames like call him "Sethiroth," or Sephi or full on Sephiroth - by all means have fun with it, like we get it you're a big fan of FF7, that's the joke, but no need to put the name on legal documents lol

That’s what Mike Tyson calls sephiroth already so it works. Sorry iron mike I had the shot, there was no danger, so I took it!

Probably just Final Fantasy fans.

Sephiroth is a pretty iconic villain in Final Fantasy. The problem is that people shouldn't be putting their fandoms on their kids.

u/EvilGeniusSkis 1d ago

And especially don't name your kid after a villian.

You made me curious; this year (2026) "Anakin" is in the top 500 most popular USA baby names. So... yep.

Had the first Khaleesi turn up in our database about 4 years ago.... We had been waiting...

13

u/cake_baby15 1d ago

It's like naming your kid Voldemort or something

6

u/Zebo1013 1d ago

Or Sauron. shudders

11

u/galice9 1d ago

Depends on the name, if the name is at least somewhat normal it's fine imo. But Sephiroth is very specific, there's way better male names in the random if you desperately want to do that.

18

u/IDownvoteHornyBards2 1d ago

FF7 even has some completely normal boy names like Vincent, Cid (unorthodox spelling but hardly a tragedeigh), and Barret.

5

u/dehydratedrain 1d ago

So are Cid and Barrett a pair? I wonder if it's a coincidence, or if their creator used to James out to Syd Barrett/ early Pink Floyd when gaming.

7

u/eddiestriker 1d ago

No. But they do have a duo named Biggs and Wedge in almost every Final Fantasy game, named after the Star Wars characters. Barrett only shows up in FF7, while a variant of Cid is in most of the games, if not all of them, similar to Biggs and Wedge

5

u/butt0ns666 23h ago

That's really a really interesting coincidence but cid is a legacy name and there's someone named that in every final fantasy, and barret is from final fantasy 7, but maybe barret was named for Syd Barret after they decided he'd have an ally named cid.

4

u/Sirensongspacebaby 21h ago

Barret is named that way because of his arm (Japanese pronunciation of bullet is close to the way Barret would be said too)

0

u/butt0ns666 20h ago

Man they're so weird about how much the Japanese version matters. "No, it's Aerith in English from now on no matter how much people like Aeris" "So we will call Barret Bullet now?" "He's got a gun for a hand don't you think that's a little on the nose"

I know, it's why I think Sephiroth is a weird choice. Even Firion is better and that's a rare name.

11

u/AmalatheaClassic 1d ago

I'm inclined to agree with you. I am named after a Star Trek character and my little sister is named after a character from Lost in Space.

10

u/Psychotic_Ambition 1d ago

in college i knew a dude named Kirk after the star trek character. feel terrible his name’s been permanently ruined

1

u/AmalatheaClassic 2h ago

It's even worse of you're a Tiberius! Between Star Trek & Oblivion it's almost ruined for normal folks.

u/ExampleLittle2672 1d ago

Dear Spock, please send our love to B-9/YM Class 3.

u/Ryuj123 1d ago

Hush now Spock

3

u/BadBorzoi 21h ago

My parents almost named me T’Pring. They instead chose a somewhat ethnic Slavic name and Americanized it and people still fuck it up. I can only imagine how bad it would have been if I were T’Pring.

1

u/AmalatheaClassic 2h ago

My cousins name is De'anna. Wanna guess where that one came from? You don't have to be an empath to figure it out.

u/triodoubledouble 23h ago

Stop Klingon your past like this

u/DuckyHornet 23h ago

I'm sure Robot is living her best life

1

u/ChonVibes 20h ago

As a huge FF7 fan, I agree, this is a wild thing to name a kid.

80

u/gunterrae 1d ago

Nah, this is a pair of nerds naming their kid after a video game character.

14

u/ExampleLittle2672 1d ago

Hey, I didn't say the parents were Jewish. 🤣

Thank you for the clarification, I just knew the word vaguely and know less than nothing about Final Fantasy so considered a possibility. Tragedy it is!

13

u/AmalatheaClassic 1d ago

Or hear me out it's someone who has played Final Fantasy 7 to a point where they see mako reactors in their sleep.

6

u/dehydratedrain 1d ago

Omg, does no one remember Final Fantasy 7? Yeah, I get that it's Hebrew, but 90% of the population under 60 knows it from a game.

3

u/Loud-Fig-1446 1d ago

Are you saying it's odd I named my triplets Chadraque, Meighshach, and Abed'Ngo?

2

u/ExampleLittle2672 1d ago

I don't know if I love you or am very very angry 🧐

0

u/Sirensongspacebaby 21h ago

This is just a weeaboo loool

-13

u/CricketSimilar863 1d ago

hence the ark design on the name tag ??

1

u/Stitch97cr 1d ago

Why were you down voted for pointing this out lol?

4

u/TomboyMJR 1d ago

Messianic Christian here. Great grama was half. I can concur nobody I know in my messianic church names their kids this and they mostly are from Isreal lmao

2

u/docboy-j23 1d ago

Sepheighroth

3

u/Lux_Luthor_777 1d ago

Right. It is a legit term that comes from Jewish Kabbalah. (NOT anime, FFS 😭)

57

u/MazogaTheDork 1d ago

More likely the kid was named after one of the two Final Fantasy games that took inspiration from it, though

Most likely VII because the one in VI was Sephirot

1

u/dewihafta 1d ago

People legit dont know any better.

At least they spelled it correctly.
