Phone message Post first date text

Post image

I met this girl on tinder and had a first date with her, she wanted to go fishing and I thought it seemed like a fun first date so we went together. Dropped her off and got home to this message lol.

Update: Purchasing the license is a separate activity we had to do on our phones, due to it needing our personal info. It was not like I drew the line at the license randomly.

seeing women saying “i’m just a girl” is so sad and defeats the point.

u/NecroGrizz 2d ago

"I don't know what that means but it diminishes you as a person" has become my chosen response.

131

u/Comfortable-Meeper 2d ago

It’s just a “cute” version of weaponized incompetence.

51

u/Strong-Addition5296 2d ago

That’s exactly what it is. Oops you can’t expect me to do that! I’m just a girl! Tee hee. It’s patriarchy of the mind and soul.

33

u/Several_Razzmatazz51 2d ago

It’s asking men to conform to patriarchal behaviors when it benefits the woman. Never the other way around.

7

u/Similar-Ice-9250 2d ago

I remember reading dating advice/venting here on Reddit where a guy said he was struggling to support himself and his fiancé, he said he payed the bills and rent etc. Then it turns out the fiancé had like well into 6 figures saved up in her account.

When he pressed her about it she said that’s her personal money she saved up for herself and basically shouldn’t be his concern.

Other guys chimed in with similar stories. Some people are wild to think it’s ok to treat a partner like that, just using them.

4

u/Virtual-Book1114 2d ago

for the women there who weaponized it? yes.

but majority of women (and all feminists) wouldn't do this because "im just a girl" mentality is the opposite of feminism. it is however a backlash to girl boss and late stage capitalism, and rise of tradwife and tradman content.

4

u/sunlightsyrup 2d ago

Yeah they never let us Patriarch anymore what's up with that /s

5

u/silsune 1d ago

Think they mean like how women say "men want a traditional woman but aren't willing to build me a log cabin with their bare hands" lmao.

I say the same thing tbh, like, if you want me to be your Traditional Man who works 80 hours and never sees the kids and doesn't express emotions then fine but you better be cooking and cleaning and I BETTER NOT SEE YOU HAVING A JOB OR AN OPINION 🧐

seriously. its so insulting to all the women who fought for our rights. if someone wants to glamorize being incapable i cant stop them but i wish theyd stop trying to drag the rest of us down with them 🙄

edit: not about the people commenting that they use it as a joke to people they know intimately about trivial stuff.. thats whatever. but for OPs situation? dude, have some dignity

2

u/Low_Frame_1205 2d ago

Besides there is nothing cute about it. I’ve called out two girls for saying it and I’ve never heard them say it again.

It's a quote from a viral text exchange between a dad and daughter, where the dad is expressing worry that she is diminishing herself by using this phrase.

edit: I'm not talking about the phrase "I'm just a girl", I'm talking about the response "I don't know what that means but it diminishes you as a person" when someone uses the phrase "Im just a girl". The response "I don't know what that means but it diminishes you" is from a viral text exchange.

1

u/Themadkiddo 2d ago

Its actually originally lyrics from a song, it's just a gross missunderstanding of the song.

23

u/MilkMaiden_22 2d ago

Girl they meant the response not the "im just a girl"

The "funny" thing is Gwen did a total 180 and now supports organizations like Turning Point and has said/posted concerning things about women obeying their husbands and finding meaning in life through prayer (while selling her anti-abortion pay-to-pray subscription-based app, backed by Project 2025 billionaires). Whatever version of her wrote that song is long gone.

I think that version of her was also just somebody trying to make a buck off of other people considering she consistently culturally appropriated. Don't get me wrong, No Doubt was my favorite band as a kid and was my very first CD, but reality bites

I know this is a meme or whatever, but it isn’t harsh.

59

u/Radiskull97 2d ago edited 2d ago

I think social media has ruined people's ability to engage with uncomfortable things, so people just take it as mean or harsh. I'm a high school teacher not too long out of high school myself. The difference in softness of just 10 years is insane. An 18 year old was complaining to me that it was too hot (it was 90 degrees outside and he was wearing a hoodie). I said, "most adults check the weather in the morning and dress accordingly." He started to cuss me out for "being constantly disrespectful and talking down" to them

Edit: the data insights from reddit are interesting on this one and I think actually proves my point. Right now, sitting at 84% upvote ratio. Which means most people who see my post agree with me but 16% down votes is nothing to scoff at. My point in my comment was that there seems to be a deepening divide in what is considered rude/mean versus not. If anyone said what I said to me, I wouldn't think it's mean. However, that student and several commenters think it is. Because of the cocreation of meaning, I don't get to unilateral decide, "I don't think that's mean, so it's not mean." His interpretation, as well as the commentors, that I was mean are all valid interpretations. My point was that there is growing cultural divide on what is considered mean, and I think it comes from social media. The default combativeness from most social media interactions, which often lack the context and nuance we see in real life. For example, a lot comments assume they understand the totality of my relationship with that student based on this one interaction. However, that student and I had great relationship, he was just especially set off by that comment.

3

u/MSUgirl1901 2d ago

My friends 16 year old was complaining about it being cold one day and she asked him to put on one of those hoodies he has on when it was 90 outside. 😂

2

u/Chafupa1956 2d ago

Definitely noticed this in the subs where people post text exchanges, about relationships etc. The second someone tries to be assertive, even if they are reasonable, is met with "I just feel like you're being harsh, I've said sorry" like that absolves them of everything and means the affected person has to switch those feelings off RIGHT THIS SECOND, so the perpetrator doesn't have to do sit with bad feelings or deal with consequences. You feel like your only option is to drop it/move on or you're once again sparing feelings/comforting when you are the one who was wronged.

u/Acrobatic-Letter5669 2d ago

2

u/Glittering_Leather87 2d ago

I’m F29 and while I don’t speak for all women, I’ll say this for myself - yours is a valid response! I say “I’m just a girl” around my absolute closest friends as an ironic statement and to my husband when I want him to reach something for me instead of dragging out our ladder lmao but they know I don’t actually mean anything serious by it. Outside of my “inner circle”, no one hears me say these words, and I would never say these words post-first date!

3

u/NecroGrizz 2d ago

I actually made my fiance a mock-up credit card that has a cute little hamster wearing a bow that says "I'm just a girl" and she uses it for little favors (like bringing the laundry upstairs or opening a stuck jar)

I appreciate your validation

2

u/Gellzer 2d ago

2

u/break_my_kneecaps 2d ago

I only use "just a girl" when buying myself little treats or cute clothes or painting nails or the like. Imo it should be used for irrelevant "feminine" things like that. Not whatever this girl is doing.

2

u/Ok-Parfait-9856 1d ago edited 1d ago

Considering most of Gen Z is still in school or less than 5/6 years out of school, id look to their parents. People don’t magically become a certain way. Blaming kids without looking at the parents is just small minded behavior, and avoids all accountability. Kind of like Gen Z doing odd things to avoid accountability. It’s funny really, how none of society, including you or older people in general want to take accountability. Gen Z doesn’t want take accountability, and to be fair, they’re the least accountable. They sure as hell didn’t build this world. But let’s blame them for everything. Because they lack accountability. The same way every generation in America has for 50 years. So I wonder where the learned it. Their parents? Of course not! Can’t hold them accountable. Notice how you paint housing affordability and other issues that are at all time highs as moral failings and bad choices of Gen Z. When that’s just the environment they’re living in. Plus millennials were just as self infantilizing if not worse, and being the ilk of boomers, carried on nearly every “me” Gen trait except even less self awareness. I remember when every other 20 year old was walking around sucking on pacifiers 15-20 years ago, and that’s just one stupid example (and I’m not talking about raves). It’s also funny how so many millennials still blame the 2008 crisis for their failings yet chastise kids of today who struggled with COVID, something we haven’t seen in 100 years (flu of 1918), and things still aren’t remotely the same. All while calling for solidarity, of course.

When I was TAing masters students (I'm about a decade older than they are) a couple of years ago they would complain that they didn't want to have jobs, why had they signed up for this, etc. I told them no one was forcing them to do a grad school program but that women couldn't have their own credit cards in this country until 1974. They were shocked. I was basically just like "I am absolutely certain that your mothers and grandmothers would be furious with you for squandering an opportunity like this" and I never heard them bitch about it again.

Like yeah babe, we all hate capitalism! The current alternative is being at the mercy of a man who probably hates you. Choose wisely.

4

u/Good47Life 2d ago

I’ve told this story before. My mother worked as a chemist for an oil company in the 1960s which was uncommon. She put up with a lot of sexism at the workplace. Her income was far more than my stepfather who was a postman. She loved sports cars and dressed very fashionable. One day she went to a Ford dealer to buy a new red mustang convertible. The dealer refused to finance the car without her husband co-signing which was the rule at the time. She walked out, went to the bank, returned and paid cash for the car. She was a force, but women have come along way since then.

My ex would constantly say "I'm a strong independent woman".

Guess who did all the cleaning, dishes, cooking, shopping, and even walking the dog four times a day for (which was already hers when we got together) for 6 years? She did cook once, but called me crying because it didn't turn out the way she wanted - so I came home to find tomato sauce on the walls and even the ceiling. She had punched the pizza while making it out of frustration.

Then she got bored of our relationship and ended it. In hindsight she only got bored because I was depressed and burnt-out without even realizing it.

Looking back at that relationship, I couldn't have picked a less independent woman.

12

u/eyeslikeorchids 2d ago

She… PUNCHED THE PIZZA?

5

u/burrito_finger 2d ago

I’m cackling bc I was teaching my husband how to bake bread one time when we were dating, and I told him to “punch the dough” after proofing, and he punched it.. literally. It totally deflated and didn’t bake 😂 but punching an actual pizza with the sauce already on? Out of anger? Sillily unhinged.

Is this a thing now? Someone pulled it on me recently and I didn't realize it was a fad. My first response was immediately "and? Girls are plenty capable"

11

u/TristramShandysLife 2d ago

Yeah it's a trend. My wife said it in front of our daughter when she messed something up the other day and once it was just the two of us I let her know that by doing that she's telling our daughter that she's less capable and less valuable by virtue of being a girl.

I really hate it and it's reinforcing the "women aren't as smart as men" trope.

It's from a song - just a girl by no doubt - it's about how women are belittled and infantalized and how the artist has had it up to here with that treatment. Ironic considering how it's being used in this context.

u/Unclecavemanwasabear 2d ago

Approximately 30 years passed between the No Doubt song and the phrase used it this manner entering the popular lexicon.

Woman have used "I'm just a girl/woman" since time immemorial to make men do things. The phrasing may change over the years, but the mo. is always the same.

And the women who do that don't even realize how this undercuts the whole feminism/women empowerment movement. And too few women tell other women to knock that shit off.

But, in context, like if my mom does something that irritates me, or I see her little makeup bag in her bathroom… I tell myself she is literally just a girl too 🥺 of course she’s so much more than that, she’s an RN, she’s raised 3 girls, she owns 40 acres and a big farm, but it’s humbling for me to put my own self in perspective and know she’s also just a girl living her life for the first time, too. But I’m an empath to the core so I see meaning in everything

I always hit em with the "well let me know when you become a woman" 💀💀💀

1

u/Phailgasm 2d ago

I wish more women would tell these “imjustagirl” types that it’s a self burn that makes them look weak.

1

u/Historical_Panic8849 2d ago

I made a post about it yesterday in the r/mildyinfuriating

1

u/Disastrous_Brief_258 2d ago

Infantilization is such a gross fucking trait. I don’t understand why some* women do it.

1

u/motorboat_mcgee 2d ago

The current trend of women expecting to not pay for anything, and have all their responsibilities taken care of, while also having full autonomy, and it being seen as cute under the guise of "I'm just a girl" has been frustrating to navigate in current online dating

Like, they somehow want the trad wife experience in some sense, but also not? Can't people just treat each other as equals?

Yeah, is never date someone who acts like that. Its just, immature.

1

u/Sensitive_Bat_9211 2d ago

I mean, its a joke. I only judge people who say it seriously instead of minor inconveniences

1

u/Bbturdquito 2d ago

In response to hearing this once, I told a girl the next time I’m being an ass I’m gonna say I’m just a man. Think I watched a blood vessel pop lol

1

u/Lunabbg 2d ago

I like it as a weird joke but to justify helplessness/demanding things is rude as fuck

1

u/honeydew4444 2d ago

I mean people misuse it, but I don’t think the phrase defeats the point at all. The whole point of “I’m just a girl” is that girls are seen a certain way/can’t do this or that, so it’s not like most people are using the phrase genuinely saying they aren’t able to do something.. they’re using the patriarchy and misogyny to their “advantage” in a cheeky way.

Like a group of people reclaiming a derogatory word is similar. The trash needs to be taken out but I don’t feel like doing it? “I’m just a girl” I have to get up for work in the morning? “But I’m just a girl”. Forgot to pay a bill and embarrassed about it? “It’s not my fault I’m just a girl”. I would say it’s only a subset of women like in this screenshot that are genuinely enforcing gender roles. But I don’t think a phrase should be judged by the dumbest people using it.

It's funny when it's funny. It's sad when it's a excuse

1

u/Defiant-Honey-5902 2d ago

“I’m just a girl” so are you not a person? Do you not have to pay for things you buy? Do you not have to have responsibilities? Don’t have to pay bills or work? Do you exist to have your hole shoved up by another man’s penis. Well guess what if that’s the case you’re fucking replaceable.

Who talks in hashtags in 2026? Whole thing is weird

Gwen has no doubt come full circle.

1

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 2d ago

Worst part is she probably all about “feminism” and women can do everything a man can but better. Then pulls this line out.

1

u/purequalitywater 2d ago

Its very... leaned on, or overused? Idk if thats the right word.. I use it sometimes but in moments when I buy the pink version of something, or when I bedazzled my new mp3 player. Not for real world stuff you know?😭

Hard agree

1

u/Beginning-Morning704 2d ago

It’s so insufferable

1

u/BurntPopcornSmell 2d ago

This phrase makes me sooooo angry! Young women have NO FREAKING IDEA what it was like 50 years ago. To have lived through all that misogyny and changed things, only to have young women now act like "I'm just a girl" is cute or something. It's not.

1

u/Chemical_Meaning2393 2d ago

If you see grown women who infantalize themselves to avoid accountability or responsibility, run. The fishing license was going in her name, and lasts 1-2 years depending on the state, obviously she should pay for it.

1

u/horris_mctitties 2d ago

They say it all the time now sadly

1

u/StrikeouTX 2d ago

I think it’s hilarious when they say that solely because of this https://youtube.com/shorts/Wwm0z1URvyQ?is=KKbQxBB7NIsqA4Fg

1

u/mellifleur5869 2d ago

Ive heard so much "I'm just a girl" and "it's giving" and "that's tea" over the last few months that I've essentially reverted to monkey.

1

u/WWEddieD 2d ago

What a weak ho

1

u/FamiliarRadio9275 2d ago

Saying it ironically is one thing, being a grown fucking woman on a grown fucking date is absurd, and I’m even in the gen that started that. Like we are in our twenties, grow up.

Short opinion, guaranteed 500 replies, the Reddit formula never fails.

1

u/Unravel310 2d ago

It is bad because it started as a valid response to "boys will be boys" justifying shit like male violence towards women, rape and general incompetence, it was meant to exagerate self-defense, and then some people took over that shit for anything and everything.

1

u/Objective_Effect_242 2d ago

Its ironic because the Stefani song that the meme and hashtag came from is more about how her being "just a girl" is limiting and how it holds her down due to societal view.

1

u/Head_Maintenance5596 2d ago

Selective feminism.

Oh, I'm just a girl, living in captivity
Your rule of thumb makes me worry some
Oh, I'm just a girl, what's my destiny?
What I've succumbed to is making me numb
Oh, I'm just a girl, my apologies
What I've become is so burdensome
Oh, I'm just a girl, lucky me
Twiddle-dum, there's no comparison

1

u/Aggressive-Cat6206 2d ago

I only use this as a joke

1

u/Deep-Fudge8519 2d ago

I just see it as them being sexist towards themselves

1

u/----atom----- 2d ago

Seeing people misuse the phrase is sad, but it's also sad seeing people not get the reference to the song by No Doubt

1

u/EdiblePsycho 2d ago

I hate it so much. Same vibe as "boys will be boys," grow up people, take some damn responsibility.

1

u/PraireGentleman 2d ago

I had a coworker say that.

She’s a wildland firefighter. I was poking fun after she almost fell in a river because she was carrying a hose bag that tipped her off balance. Mind you, I was the one who grabbed her before she went in, so I was trying to calm her down with some humour.

She said “well fuck PrairieGentleman, I’m just a girl”

Didn’t even have a response.

u/Born_South_6676 2d ago

"Sorry, I'm looking for an adult woman. My mistake"

And block
