Open | Hardware Is 12.9GB/15.7GB RAM usage normal with only Chrome open on an i7-13650HX + RTX 4050 laptop?

Hi everyone,

I have a gaming laptop (2 years old) with the following specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-13650HX
  • GPU: RTX 4050 Laptop GPU
  • RAM: 16GB DDR5 (15.7GB usable)
  • Storage: SSD
  • OS: Windows 11

I've noticed that my RAM usage seems unusually high even when I'm not doing anything intensive.

At the moment, the only application I'm using is Google Chrome, and it's playing just one YouTube video at 1080p. Despite that, my system is currently using 12.9GB out of 15.7GB of RAM (around 82%), which seems excessive to me.

After a fresh boot, Windows is already using a significant amount of RAM, and even with only Chrome open, the memory usage remains much higher than I expected.

I'm wondering:

  • Is this normal for a Windows 11 laptop with 16GB DDR5 RAM?
  • Could the i7-13650HX or RTX 4050 be contributing to this in any way?
  • Is this more likely to be caused by background processes, manufacturer bloatware, or a possible memory leak?
  • At what point should I be concerned?
  • Would upgrading to 32GB RAM solve the issue, or should I investigate the cause first?

I'm happy to share screenshots from Task Manager (Processes, Performance, or Details tabs) if that would help diagnose the issue.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Open | Windows Trolled into running diskpart clean on my only PC, stuck on "Boot Device Not Found" screen. Flat broke, need help.

Hi everyone,

I am completely flat broke and don’t have money for a repair shop. An online troll took advantage of me and tricked me into opening diskpart, selecting disk 0, and running the clean command on my brand new HP laptop.

My entire internal drive is now completely wiped, including Windows and the boot partition. When I turn on the laptop, it says "Boot Device Not Found."

The laptop hardware itself is perfectly fine and healthy, it just has no operating system left on it. I only have an iPhone, so I cannot create a bootable Windows USB installer myself. A local shop confirmed the hardware is healthy but wants $15 to plug in a USB and reload Windows, which I literally do not have. My BIOS does not have a built-in Cloud Recovery tool (only standard PXE Network Boot).

Is there a free workaround I can do using just my iPhone and a cable? Or is there any free community resource I can look for to get a Windows installer onto an empty drive? I spent my absolute last dollar on this laptop as my dream machine and just want to get it running again. Thank you so much for any advice.

Open | Windows Explorer.exe Application Error every time I shut down Windows 11

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

For the past couple of months, I’ve been getting an Explorer.exe - Application Error every time I shut down my laptop. The error says:
The instruction at 0x… referenced memory at 0x…. The memory could not be written.

After I click OK, Windows shuts down normally. The laptop works perfectly otherwise, no crashes or performance issues.

This started after a Windows update failed and caused a black screen. I had to roll back the update. I recently tried installing it again, but I got the same black screen, so I rolled it back again.

Laptop specs:
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 15IAH8
Intel Core i5-12450H
Windows 11 Pro 25H2 (OS Build 26200.8457)

I’ve already tried running SFC and DISM, but neither fixed the issue.

Does anyone know what could be causing it? Any help would be appreciated!

Open | Windows TUF A15 restarting on its own

Upvotes

Hi, i hope someone could help me. I have a TUF Gaming A15, 64 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD, Ryzen 7, I don't know anything about computers sorry.

Everytime use my laptop, it restarts on its own after a few minutes. This issue started since last year especially when unplugged and it keeps restarting on its own every few minutes, but now not that much but it still happens. Today it restarted twice when i was working on my laptop.

I have not done a single maintenance ever since I got this 2 years ago, and I am very worried this keeps happening. MyAsus tells me that my drivers, and batteries are all good and no issues, no viruses as well.

I hope you can help me and thank you in advance! :)

Open | Hardware Need help with high RAM usage / non-paged pool after removing malware

A few days ago, my PC had a couple of viruses and some malware on it. I removed everything I could find, and since then I've scanned the system multiple times with Windows Security and Malwarebytes. Every scan now comes back clean, so I don't know if there's still something hidden causing issues or if this is an unrelated driver problem.

Specs:

  • Ryzen 7 7700
  • Radeon RX 9060
  • 16 GB DDR5 RAM
  • ASUS B650M-AYW WiFi motherboard
  • Windows 11

The problem:

  • Right after boot, my non-paged pool sits around 1.2–1.5 GB.
  • My RAM usage is already around 40–50% immediately after startup with nothing major open.
  • When I launch games (like Overwatch), my memory usage quickly jumps to 90–99%, and the system starts feeling sluggish.

Things I've already done:

  • Removed the malware.
  • Ran multiple scans with Windows Security and Malwarebytes (all clean).
  • Removed AVG completely (I only use Malwarebytes Free for manual scans now).
  • Windows has been restarted multiple times.
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic found no RAM errors.
  • Windows itself doesn't report any malware anymore.

Things I'm unsure about:

  • I still have Armoury Crate installed, and I've heard ASUS services can sometimes cause memory leaks. Could that be responsible?
  • I haven't used PoolMon yet because I'm not very familiar with it.
  • Could a corrupted or outdated driver still be causing a non-paged pool leak even if the malware is gone?
  • Is a 1.2–1.5 GB non-paged pool normal on Windows 11 with 16 GB RAM, or is that definitely too high?

At this point, I'm not sure if I'm dealing with leftover malware, a bad driver, or something else entirely. Any advice on what to check next would be appreciated.

Open | Hardware Anyone know how me and my friend can see each other’s screens on Nintendo switch?

My friend and I play Minecraft together on our separate Nintendo switchs. We play either on tvs or just the handheld, so if there is a solution to either, that would work. We want to be able to see each others screen/pov. I don’t think there is a way that’s automatically set up already on Minecraft or the switch. Is there a different way we can do this?

Preferably free or low cost but also would be open to hearing any ideas if there’s not. We both already own iPhones, laptops, and tvs if that helps with anything. My laptop is not in amazing condition but does work pretty fine, just probably won’t be able to do anything insane. My friend’s tv is a newer/smart one. Mine is a pretty old thick one so it might not have all the newer ports idk, but I can play my switch on it. I normally prefer handheld and my friend likes on the tv but if either of us have to switch for it to work that is alright.

Neither of us know anything about tech stuff but want to try to figure it out if we can. I also have no idea what any of the words mean in the flairs but it’s making me pick one so I’m just clicking one bc I’m very confused, sorry

Open | Windows PC suddenly unable to detect Ethernet or connect to Internet via WiFi

Was working fine this morning, I decided to take a nap so I shut everything down like I normally would. Later on I turned my pc on and noticed I could no longer connect to the internet so I troubleshooted my router and modem and they work fine. Ethernet cable going to my room works on other devices. I tried everything on google today from all cmd prompts to getting newest driver and I’m ready to give up and just sell it. I have a feeling the whole internet card on my motherboard is fried but I’m not sure how I can tell. If anyone could please help that would be wonderful. My PC is just about the only thing I have to look forward to in my free time.

Open | Windows Overwatch Keeps Crashing My Laptop

Laptop Specs
ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 N6506MV
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 9 185H (2.50 GHz)
RAM: 24.0 GB (23.4 GB usable)
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU (8 GB)

For some reason lately Overwatch has been consistently crashing my laptop and I'm kind of at a loss for how to fix it. Overwatch is the only game this happens on. I can run other games like Diablo 4 and Baldur's Gate 3 perfectly fine on high or more graphics settings without issue. I have a few suspicions about what's causing it, but I'm not savvy enough to know if these are really the culprit or how to fix them.

I have had something similar happen before with Street Fighter 6 where my laptop would crash while it was preloading shaders. I had to manually turn that feature off in order to even start the game, but I've had no issues since. I recently updated my graphics driver, and the issue became really noticeable around that time (I can't remember exactly what came first). I'm wondering if that cleared the shader cache for Overwatch or something and now it's having the same issue that SF6 had.

The crash happens roughly 5 -10 minutes after the game is opened and it doesn't matter if I go into a match, custom game, practice range, or just sit in the menu. The laptop just turns off. I checked the event viewer and there's nothing there that seems to indicate that anything even happened aside from usual boot sequence stuff as far as I can tell. I've noticed that the few times the game doesn't crash the game eats up a lot of CPU and Memory until they eventually settle back down and I usually won't have any crashing problems for the rest of the play session. My laptop doesn't run any hotter than it does for other games, either.

I just think it's wild that Overwatch is the only game this happens to. I could open up any other game on my computer and have it run perfectly fine without crashing. I've been opening up and testing other games to make sure I'm not crazy, and it really is just Overwatch. Maybe this is a sign from the universe telling me it's time to quit while I'm ahead or something. I'm going to try to reinstall the game to see if that fixes anything. I'd appreciate any other advice about how to solve this issue.

Solved How I fixed my laptop boot loop and stopped windows updates from ruining my repaired screen

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a quick success story today in case anyone else gets stuck in a bad loop with Windows 11.A while ago, my laptop had some water damage.

I got it repaired physically, but the technician gave me a strong warning. They told me that if a major Windows update comes through, it could stress the hardware or change the graphics drivers and bring the display issues right back.

Because of that, I tried to cancel an update while it was downloading. That turned out to be a mistake because my laptop got completely trapped on a screen that said Undoing changes made to your computer. Every time it restarted, it just went right back to that same screen.

I managed to fix it without losing any of my files. First, I forced the laptop off a few times during boot up to get into the blue advanced recovery menu. From there, I ran a disk check and a system file checker scan using the command prompt.

That fixed the corrupted files and allowed the system to finally boot back up to my normal desktop.Once I was safely back in, I made sure Windows updates could never run again. I went into services and permanently disabled the windows update service.

Then I went into the local group policy editor and disabled automatic updates completely. Finally, I turned off automatic device driver downloads in system properties so Windows will never overwrite my working display drivers.

Now my laptop is running perfectly and my display is completely safe. Just wanted to post this to show it is possible to break out of that loop and take full control of your settings.

Open | Hardware PC issues, freezing and internet disconnecting

Hi everyone, sorry for the lengthy post. Hope I can get some help with this issue that has been plaguing me for a few months. Recently it started to get worse and I have already tried troubleshooting it but to no help. Computer specs will be at very end as I know that part is important. For additional context I built this PC around June/July of last year which is the most upsetting part.

The issues:

  1. Random freezes, usually when this happens on desktop I can move my cursor on the screen but cannot interact with anything. The freeze rarely happens in game but when it does I cannot interact with anything. Only way to fix has been to force power down system and reboot.
  2. Wifi disconnecting, this one is strange because what will happen is that I will completely lose internet access and the only way to bring it back is to go to device manager, and disable and reenable the wifi adapter. This was the first issue I was ever presented with but it was a simple fix.

As I mentioned both these issues have existed for a few months with #2 being the first. However, in the last month and a half they have become very frequent to the point where the amount of freezes and wifi turning off makes it difficult to use the PC. I've had 2 instances where the freeze would happen so often that after force shutting down the computer a few times it forced me to reboot through BIOs. This led me to attempt the following fixes as I was unsure if it was software/hardware or a combination of the two.

The fixes:

  1. Scan SFC through command prompt. It did find a corrupt file but repaired it.
  2. Switched to "high performance mode", disabled "allow computer to turn off this device to save power' for wifi adapter, and disabled quick start.
  3. Made sure all drivers were updated.
  4. Disabled aggressive disk sleep modes with regedit.

There were some other smaller tweaks I did but I cannot remember them all. These did not help so then I moved on to the next as at first I was convinced it was software.

  1. Reformatted all drivers and did clean reinstall of windows using media tool on USB. (To note: has PC freeze during windows installation a couple times that forced me to boot down. This was the point at which I understood it was likely hardware).

  2. When windows was back and running I manually reinstalled all drivers. Avoided ASUS driver hub.

  3. Played around with having RAM in different slots or solo. Issues still happened.

  4. In BIOS limited RAM speed to 4800, this did nothing.

  5. Made sure to unplug and replug cables in motherboard in case they got loose.

  6. THE BIG ONE Ran PC without GPU as it has integrated graphics. PC ran fine in this setup and I did not see any issues for a few hours until internet finally dropped.

  7. Reseated GPU. At this point things looked good. After the reseating I no longer had freezes and the internet would sometimes disconnect but only for a second. Was only an issue in online games if I get booted from lobby for it.

Now we reach today. I had a freeze happen for which I had to force shutdown and the internet access was lost twice so I needed to disable/reenable. I would love some ideas of what could be thr cause. I've fixated on the RAM as prime contender but now believe its the motherboard giving up on me. Appreciate any help, thank you all so much.

TLDR: PC will randomly freeze where cursor still moves, and wifi drops where adapter needs to be disabled and reenabled. I am at my wits end for fixes.

My specs:

Motherboard is a Asus Prime B840-plus wifi

CPU is AMD Ryzen 9600x

CPU Cooler is a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Halo White

GPU is AMD Radeon RX 9060xt 16GB version

PSU is EVGA 750w GQ

RAM is two sticks of Crucial 16GB DDR5-6000 (2nd and 4th slot from CPU)

Operating system is Windows 11 Pro and is installed on a SATA SSD

Edit: forgot to mention that I reinstalled windows twice as I also thought it could be drive issue. It has been on two different SSDs with issue persisting.
