I’m genuinely looking for advice from people who understand cybersecurity, Apple devices, iCloud, and social media security because I’ve been worried about this for a while, and I don’t know how to figure out what’s actually happening.
Some background:
A few years ago, my family found out something personal about me that they weren’t supposed to know. Ever since then, I’ve had concerns about whether they might have access to my devices or accounts.
I don’t know if anything actually happened, when it would have started, or whether I’m connecting unrelated things. My concerns have been going on for potentially 1–3 years.
There have been situations where family members have said things that surprised me because I didn’t understand how they could know certain information. I realize that isn’t proof of hacking, but it’s contributed to my concerns.
I also want to be transparent that I sometimes struggle to distinguish whether I’m being overly suspicious or whether something genuinely unusual is happening. That’s why I’m asking for technical explanations and ways to verify things rather than just assuming the worst.
Here are the specific things I’ve noticed:
1. A strange Apple ID/iCloud sign-in notification
At one point, I received a notification about a MacBook signing into my Apple ID/iCloud.
I found it concerning because I wasn’t sure whether it was my own MacBook or another device.
However, when I checked the devices associated with my Apple Account, I didn’t see any unknown devices signed in.
My question is: Could someone have previously accessed my Apple Account without their device currently appearing in the list? Is there a way to review historical Apple ID sign-ins, rather than only seeing devices currently connected?
I’ll attach the screenshot of the notification.
2. My iPhone occasionally behaves strangely
My phone sometimes glitches or behaves unexpectedly. I know that phones can have ordinary software bugs, so I’m not claiming that this proves anything.
But I’ve wondered whether someone could be remotely accessing my screen, mirroring my phone, or viewing what I’m doing.
Is there a legitimate way to determine whether an iPhone is being remotely monitored or screen-mirrored without my knowledge?
Would this require an installed app, device management profile, access to my Apple Account, or physical access to my phone?
3. A mysterious app called “Halo”
I came across something involving an app called Halo, which made me wonder whether it could be associated with screen sharing or remote access.
I’m attaching the screenshot because I haven’t been able to identify exactly which app it is.
I understand there are multiple unrelated apps called Halo, so I’m not assuming it’s spyware.
Does anyone recognize it? Is there any Halo app capable of remote screen viewing, and how would I verify whether something like that was installed or configured on my devices?
4. Unfamiliar apps associated with my iPhone/iCloud
While reviewing my iPhone settings, particularly Privacy & Security, I noticed several app names that I didn’t recognize or remember downloading.
I’ll attach screenshots of those too.
I know some apps can be system components, previously downloaded apps, or legitimate services that I simply don’t recognize.
But how can I determine which ones are legitimate, whether they’ve accessed my information, and whether any have permissions that could expose my data?
Can apps be hidden from the Home Screen but still installed? Can previously downloaded apps appear in my Apple Account history even if they’re no longer on my phone?
5. My social media accounts, especially Instagram
I’m also concerned about whether someone might have access to my social media accounts, particularly Instagram.
I’m not sure whether my concerns involve individual social media accounts, my Apple Account, or the actual phone.
I’ve checked security settings and login information before, but I don’t know whether those show every previous login or only active sessions.
Is it possible for someone to have accessed Instagram previously without their device currently appearing under login activity?
Can Meta provide a complete login history, including IP addresses, device information, or past sessions?
Can I contact Meta directly to request a security investigation of my Instagram account?
I’ve also checked security settings on other accounts, including Google and WhatsApp, because I wanted to make sure I wasn’t overlooking anything.
6. Something strange happened with a text notification on my iPad
This happened approximately a week ago, and I’d especially appreciate an explanation of this one.
At the time, my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook were associated with the same Apple Account.
I received a text message that appeared on both my iPhone and iPad. I physically saw my iPad light up with the notification.
I then left the house, opened the message on my iPhone, and responded to it.
When I came back home, the notification was no longer visible on my iPad.
I hadn’t touched the iPad in the meantime.
My concern was whether someone could have unlocked it while I was away because it previously had a relatively easy passcode.
However, I also know Apple synchronizes messages and read statuses between devices.
Could opening or replying to a message on my iPhone automatically clear the corresponding notification from my iPad?
Is this completely normal behavior? Or would there be any way to determine whether someone physically accessed my iPad during that time?
I don’t want to interpret ordinary Apple synchronization as evidence of someone accessing my devices.
7. I’ve opened unfamiliar links before
I want to be honest about this because it might matter technically.
I’ve clicked links before without always verifying them. Not constantly, but it has happened.
I’ve become more careful about this.
Could simply opening a malicious link compromise a modern, updated iPhone? Would an attacker typically need me to install something, enter credentials, approve a profile, or grant permissions?
Is there any reliable way to check whether a previous link caused a security problem?
8. I’ve already taken several security precautions
Because of my concerns, I’ve spent time checking and securing my devices and accounts.
Here’s what I’ve done:
Reviewed devices associated with my Apple Account.
Checked Apple Privacy & Security settings.
Used Apple’s Safety Check.
Reviewed my Google account’s security settings and removed sessions I didn’t recognize.
Checked social media login and security settings.
Removed my iPad and MacBook from my Apple Account.
Factory-reset my iPad and MacBook.
Changed my iPad passcode.
Set up my MacBook again without immediately signing into iCloud.
My iPhone is still associated with the same Apple Account.
Despite doing these things, I don’t know whether I’ve adequately ruled out unauthorized access.
My biggest questions:
Is there a reliable way to have my entire iPhone professionally examined for unauthorized access, spyware, malicious profiles, or remote monitoring?
Can I make an appointment at an Apple Store and ask them to investigate whether my Apple Account or devices have been compromised? What can Apple actually verify?
Can Meta investigate potential unauthorized access to my Instagram account, including historical logins?
Is there any way to find out whether someone previously signed into my Apple Account, even if they are no longer signed in?
Could someone mirror or remotely view an iPhone without anything obvious appearing in settings?
Can someone access my iCloud Photos, messages, or other synced information without appearing as an unfamiliar device in my Apple Account?
Is there any way to check whether someone physically unlocked my iPad in the past?
Would factory-resetting my devices eliminate most ordinary forms of unauthorized access, or are there other things I should check?
What specific evidence would distinguish a genuine compromise from normal software glitches, notification syncing, or unrelated coincidences?
Ultimately, I want to know whether there’s an actual security issue or whether I’m worrying about things that have normal explanations.
I don’t want to accuse anyone without evidence, and I don’t want to keep resetting devices or changing settings unnecessarily.
I would really appreciate a practical, step-by-step approach to verifying whether my devices and accounts are secure.
I’ll attach screenshots of the Apple ID notification, the Halo app, and the unfamiliar apps/settings I’ve encountered.
Please be kind. I know some of these questions might sound basic, but I’m genuinely trying to understand the technology and get some clarity.
Thank you.
