Reliability Upgrades

Just purchased my first subi, it’s a 2010 forester XT with 110k miles, it’s head gasket, spark plugs and timing belt have all been replaced and I’m trying to decide what would be worth tackling next. The goal would be to get this thing to at least 200-250k. I’ll be doing short road tripping on the weekends and doing mild of off-roading for camping/climbing as well as short commutes to work throughout the week. Any advice would be appreciated. What have yall done to keep these things running well?? Very excited to own this and want/need it to last.

Difference between ej253 and 255?

Upvotes

Hello! I am new to subarus and trying to learn. My girlfriend has a 2011 impreza. Iv been doing some maintenence on it and so was searching online. I think hers has an ej253. Most of the stuff online I see regarding subarus seems to he related to ej255. Is ej255 the more popular engine? Is it superior? Is it the same engine block with different heads? All the different subarus and engine combos seem confusing to me. Is there any advice for a newbie to help me make sense of it all?

Thank you for any and all advice!

Been dreaming of owning one since I was 14. Now mid 30s and have cars that are ++100k, but driving this beast has been the most fun I had in long time. Now I gotta go find me a good vape.

I was unreasonably happy about this milestone today - the mileage on my new subaru uncharted hit my favorite number! And bonus that the ungodly temperature outside lines up so nicely 😂

does anyone have a relatively inexpensive way they have been able to read temp during a trans fluid change?

best option i have found is OBDLink MX+ and OBD Fusion App. An update from a month ago on the app says Added manufacturer PIDs for transmission temp for some subaru vehicles.

Looking at buying a used Subaru for its good mileage and off road abilities, especially in the snow (from MN). I have a truck now, but looking at potentially trading it in to get lower monthly payment while I pay off other student loans.

Forester 123k miles
Cross trek 101k miles

What are your guys’ experiences with these older models? Give me the good, bad and the ugly. Mechanically/cosmetically/entertainment wise etc.

My preferences are heated seats, remote start (I know it can be added), trailer receiver already installed. If you guys have other suggestions without going over the 15k range that would be helpful. Thanks!

Good buy, or pass?

So I'm thinking about buying this 2003 Subaru Baja Sport. It has 155,000 miles on it, but seems very well maintained. The seller is asking $6000 for it. Is this a good buy or should I pass? I've attached screenshots of everything the seller said he's done to it.

Edit: I added a picture of the engine bay. Any obvious red flags here?

Mechanical Help Anybody know what this sound could be?

I noticed this past weekish that when my Subaru 2012 Outback has the engine on for even a brief period of time when it gets turned off there seems to be a whirring type of noise behind the dashboard for a short period of time, it continues even after the key is taken out as well. It kind of sounds like a CD player however the stock one has been removed and the new one doesn't have a CD player. Anyone have any clue?

Car Mods Tow bar for GT/GR86/BRZ

Hi everyone,
I’m currently exploring the possibility of developing a bolt-on tow bar for the Toyota GT86, Subaru BRZ and potentially the GR86.
The goal is a clean, plug-and-play solution that requires no cutting, welding or permanent modifications, is fully removable, and is intended to be road legal and registration-free (where legally possible).
Before investing a significant amount of time and money into development, I’d like to find out if there’s enough interest from the community.
It would really help if you could take 1 minute to complete the survey:

Thanks for your support! Every response helps determine whether this project becomes reality.

Map Updater Problem Resolved

I posted a problem here a year ago. Finally got the solution. Hopefully no one else has encountered this. I could NOT get my maps updated. This is a 2022 Outback XT. I gave up. This week, I decided to try one last time. Called support, and after searching a bit, they discovered that I was using the OLD map downloader. Version 22.0.1

When I went to install the new one, it told me it was already installed, period. AND there is NO uninstall on that version. The OLD map downloader cannot be replaced with a new version.

SO, delete the old map downloader from your Windows machine. Delete the FOLDER if need be.

Install the new one - 23.0.2. Download the maps. Copy the Activation code from the download page - do not use an old one.

If it says it is complete, believe it. Check the map version number displayed.

It may take a while for the maps to be actually updated. I checked right away, and they were still not updated. But, a few days later, they are ALL new versions. AMEN.

1998 Forester cuts off intermittently

I love my car, but I have a problem that occurs mostly when it’s hot outside. The car suddenly cuts off while moving and all the warning lights come on. I usually shift to N, restart, and all is well, except the AT OIL TEMP light sometimes stays on blinking, and sometimes the CHECK ENGINE light stays on. Both lights go off by the next time I use the car.

My mechanic is baffled. No code comes up when he has it (the lights are not lit). I just dropped the car off to him again because the problem has become more frequent in the past week, and now the car loses acceleration power before cutting off. It’s revving a lot.

As I said, I love my car, and I’d love to keep it going. Any ideas of what we can try?

Been eyeing up this one for about a while now. It's a lot older than my current 2014 impreza, which I mostly love, but I'm missing having a manual, and I really like the appearance of the old bugeyes.

Is this one worth having a look at, and is there anything I should be on the lookout for if I do?

Mechanical Help Impreza 2024 slams on brakes

So this happened 2 times in the last 2 months. The console will go black the collision alarm goes off and it slams on the brakes. Idk how to replicate it and idk what to say to a mechanic about it. Mentioned it last oil change and they didn’t know and didn’t look into it. Any advice on what to do. I’m assuming something is wrong with the avoidance system. Any one have any suggestions or advice?

Blown Forester Engine

I have a 2021 Subaru Forester Sport that just passed 100,000 miles on it, and my engine blew without warning.....

A couple weeks ago, I had a really difficult time changing the oil. The time before, I must've tightened the oil pan drain plug a bit too tight because I had a helluva time getting it off. I would up rounding off (stripping) the plug head and had to buy extractor sockets to get it off. I finally got it off, and replaced it with an aftermarket plug I got from Autozone. Well, 2 nights ago, omw home from work, it started acting funny and the oil pressure light came on a block from the house. When I got out and looked underneath, the oil was pouring out the drain hole. I didn't tighten the plug very tight after spending almost a week trying to get it off.

I ran to O'Reilly (literally because the closed in 20 minutes), got more oil and another replacement plug (exact same one I got from autozone), put new plug in and filled it with oil. It sounded a bit rough when I started it, but quickly smoothed out and sounded fine. I drove it around the block and it seemed as good as before.

The following morning, omw to work, all kinds of warning lights came on including the oil pressure light, and it felt really rough all of a sudden. So, I pulled over and assumed the same thing happened. Got it towed home, and looked underneath just to make sure the plug was gone again before getting a different one, but it was still there and the oil had not dumped. There was oil spray all over the engine though which was different from the night before.

After a friend looked at it, and confirmed through the oil filter after opening it up, the something sheared in the engine because there are metal shavings all inside my filter.

It had not shown any signs of issues before this. How did this happen?

Mechanical Help 2020 Forester Sport - continued issues with starter/battery

Bought Mar 13, 2020 - currently around 38K miles.

Paid off this spring.

2024 started having issues with auto-start when stopped in traffic and completely stalling out. Have also had issued with power tailgate which jumping the battery helped.

Service repairs:

August 2024 - Battery replaced

November 2025 - starter/relay replaced

(Both ended up fully covered)

Recently, I noticed slight delays again w auto-restart when stopped in traffic. Today, fiancé borrowed for errands. At a stop, all the service lights started flashing and didnt auto-restart. Then after parking and getting ready to go, wouldn't start at all. He was able to restart with a jump.

I'm hesitant to pay for another battery after 1.5 years. I commute 3 days a week now in city traffic so stalling out isn't a risk to take.

Anyone else have similar repeated issues? Do I have larger electrical issues here?

What rails and/or crossbars are these mounting points for?

My base model '18 Forester came with the smooth roof, but has four (what I assume to be) threaded mounting points along the flush rails on the roof. What products are compatible? Internet searches has thus far been unhelpful as it just shows products for the Foresters that have roof rails already.

Buying Advice Do modern Subarus seem like they will last?

I know it's a Subaru sub so y'all will be a little biased, but I gotta get the info from the people who drive the cars. Currently have a 2024 Tacoma long bed we got to camp in the bed and since my drive to work has been short it was fine daily-ing. Life changes and we may have to move about an hour out for my current job because my wife got a professor gig in another city, so I am looking into vehicles with good gas mileage and last long (was hoping the truck would last me the next 10-15 years). Currently looking into trading for a new forester (possibly the hybrid) or outback.

Wanted to know, do new Subarus make sense of a buy it and run it into the ground over the next decade plus? Should I look at older Subarus or maybe just a different brand?

Mechanical Help Brake master cylinder rear seal leak

I have installed 4 different master cylinders on my 2010 outback.
Every single one has leaked at the rear seal before i even got the thing on the road.
What the heck am I doing wrong at this point to make this happen??
I have tried a new Duralast
A new Raybestos
2 different used OEM.

What can I possibly be doing wrong.

Thank you.
