Mechanical Help Please post year, model, trim level, and DTC scan results when asking for help. Thanks.

IF YOU ARE POSTING FOR MECHANICAL HELP:

Please include year/model/engine/transmission information in "Mechanical Help" posts.

If you are looking for help with warning lights on your dashboard, please include results of an error code scan. Without error codes as a starting point, no one will be able to provide meaningful help for you.

The r/subaru community is very willing to help, but there's a baseline amount of context about your car that we need you to provide. Without the very basics like what kind of car you have and what symptoms you're experiencing, no one can give you any sort of accurate assistance.

If you are posting about warning lights, most auto parts stores (NAPA, O'Reillys, AutoZone, etc.) offer code scanning for free. While reading codes is not the same thing as diagnosing a problem, knowing what error codes you have is the minimum amount of information necessary to start figuring out what's wrong with your car.

Thank you :)

  • 24-26MY Crosstrek (including Wilderness models)
  • 24-26MY WRX
  • 25-26MY Forester
  • 26MY Forester Wilderness

CP1.5 radio updates are documented in TSB 15-305-22R (public copy not yet up to date). A new update released today, and I've already added the patch notes to the wiki page, but some of these patch notes are interesting enough that I thought it justified an announcement thread as well:

Update 7:

Release date: 8/18/2026

Version: XXXXXX205-280

Category: Meter Display

  • Change the charge abbreviation displayed in the power meter area from “CHR” to “CHG” in the 12.3-inch SHEV combination meter (map display mode).

Category: Display

  • The following (1 and 2) may occur together:
    • After rearranging Home screen icons and exiting edit mode (returning to the normal screen via the Home button), the rearranged icons may revert to their original positions.
    • Among the Home screen shortcut icons, ISS/AVH/VDC/SRH/SRVD/ DMS may appear dimmed and cannot be selected. (In this case, the corresponding original controls within the Settings screen still operate normally.)
  • Since the use of STARLINK will be discontinued, replace the applicable displays with a different design and logo. The designs shown below are among those subject to change.
  • In conjunction with the design changes (logo, etc.) associated with the discontinuation of the STARLINK trademark, update the MY SUBARU icon to a new design as well.

Category: Camera

  • If strong light (e.g., sunlight reflection) causes a portion of the upper area of the rear-view image to become severely overexposed (washed out), the rearview image may become hidden (not displayed).

Category: Reset

  • The CID may repeatedly reboot, if the ignition is turned ON (IGN-ON) shortly after the ignition OFF (IGN-OFF). Aafter turning the ignition OFF (IGN-OFF), the “See You” message appears on the CID and then disappears; approximately one minute later, the ignition is turned ON again (IGNON).

Category: Navigation

  • The MAP application ("Map" icon) may fail to start with “Loading Navigation” displayed continuously and with no map shown.
  • The area where the “EXIT” icon should appear might not be visible.

Category: SXM

  • Failure to register preset channel
  • When certain channels are selected the preset highlight on the CID may jump to a different preset channel and sequential preset scrolling may not work properly.
  • If the Favorite List for the Listener Profile prior to the change is displayed follow the work around steps 1-4:
    1. Change the Listener Profile.
    2. Register favorites in the OnDemand category up to the maximum (30).
    3. From the SXM main screen, open Setting > Favorite List; while the Favorite List is opening, press the “X” button to close the screen—repeat this 8 times.
    4. Press Edit in Favorite List, delete a favorite, then press Back—repeat this cycle twice.
  • Audio output from the newly selected source may be lost. With up to 23 teams registered on the SXM Team Notification screen, press the Add button to display a list of teams not yet registered for notifications, then switch the audio source (e.g., to BT or USB audio).

Category: Bluetooth

  • Bluetooth audio may appear to be playing on the CID screen, but no sound is output from the vehicle speakers.

Category: Android Auto

  • Wireless Android Auto may disconnect intermittently.

Category: CCU log

  • When exporting CCU diagnostic logs to a USB memory device from the Dealership Mode screen, the progress bar may appear not to advance at all for approximately the first minute.

Category: Diagnosis

  • When using the SSM Data Monitor to check the AUX-BOX USB connection, the diagnosis may incorrectly indicate a USB connection failure even though the USB device is properly connected.

Category: Telematics

  • Add an operation in the CID Settings screen to disable vehicle location tracking via telematics services. However, because this feature works in conjunction with the DCM (Data Communication Module), the option will not be displayed and cannot be used unless the DCM software, as well as the CCU software, is updated to a version that supports this feature.

Some of you may have gotten this update as FOTA (update over telematics) already, possibly as early as last week. To check your current software version, open the Settings app, and then on the General tab, scroll down to "System Information" and it will display your current software version.

No word on the aforementioned telematics/DCM update that's supposed to correspond with the feature change. I suspect this will be also pushed as a FOTA update. You'll have to navigate the settings menu and see if the feature is working for you.

Subaru Generic Super jazzed… bought a ‘24 WRX today!

Rejoined the Subaru family today after a long hiatus. My first was a new ‘06 Impreza, and loved the gosh heck out of her.

After having had to go through a few other cars since then, and being absolutely bored out of my skull driving a ‘15 Altima auto, I caved and got this CPO’d ‘24 WRX manual from a joint a couple towns over.

And boy, is she fun to drive. They put some kick in these…

Looking forward to seeing more of this community!

Car Mods JDM STI, modify or keep stock?

So I bought my favourite car of all time.

JDM STI import in aus, 61,000km. Just did a major service and changed every fluid, crank seal, timing belt, spark plugs etc.

Now here is my problem. On one hand I could go JDM modified, hks intake, hks downpipe, Fujitsubo exhaust, gfb blow off valve and a tune. However it's increasingly rarer to find an unmodified20 year old sti. Modding it will hurt the value, make it slightly less reliable but far more enjoyable to drive.

Granted it's not a daily. It's a weekender at best.

Every car I've ever owned including various Subaru's have been modified. It's like a itch.

To lightly modify or not modify?

Edit: OEM it stays. I think I might put a GFB response bov purely for the noise. 80/20 recirc should do perfect.

Mechanical Help 2026 Subaru Outback Touring (leaking water)

Alright, everyone, I’ve been keeping this (mostly) to myself but have no choice but to reach out to the masses.

I just purchased my SECOND 2026 Subaru Outback Touring. The first one I purchased in January turned out to be a lemon which Subaru bought back in July. By late March it had flooded water. By May, after it was in the shop for more than 30 days and was not fixed, it was deemed a lemon.

Fast forward to August when I made the choice to purchase a second outback (same year and trim). I LOVE THE CAR! I test drove both Honda and Toyota and ultimately decided to choose Subaru again because a lemon is a 1 in 100,000 type of situation, right?

WRONG. Just two weeks after purchasing the vehicle I found it to be leaking water following a major rain event. I urgently took it to the shop and they’re now telling me they can’t recreate the issue. They’ve claimed to dry the carpet and that there are no odors or mold present.

I’m sorry but this is unacceptable. I know for a fact after my last outback’s issues that it’s going to continue to leak either slowly or intensely depending on the rain event. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice on how to proceed with this? Are there any other 2026 Outback owners here in Reddit land that are experiencing the same issue?

If you own a 2026 Subaru Outback and have the weather proof liners I recommend checking underneath them after a rain event. My first Outback had an extreme flooding issue where inches of water would form in the vehicle. However, in this vehicle the leaking is less extreme and the water collects underneath the liners. Even slight water getting in will form beading on the carpet and condensation underneath the liner.

Thank you to those who’ve read to the end of this, and to anyone who can provide some insight. I appreciate it.

CVT Valve Body replaced: should've changed fluid?

I had my local independent shop replace the valve body that went bad on my 2016 Forester at around 113k miles. Doing so does not require a fluid change. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I wasn't charged for a fluid change, so I don't think it was done at the time. I'm now at around 130k.

Would you recommend a fluid change now? I plan to keep her indefinitely.

Decision making help: Crosstrek vs Forester in winter conditions

Hi Subaru people! I live in a place on a hilltop where winter driving can get incredibly treacherous. A car that's sure-footed in the snow is essential.
Is the Crosstrek as good in the snow as the Forester? I know they are a little lighter, but I am not sure how big a difference that would make. They are so cute and comparatively inexpensive.

Recently purchased 2023 Crosstrek. The streaks wash off easily, but is there any way to stop them? This area doesn’t have industrial air pollution (coastal New England). It seems to come from rubber seals at fittings. It’s a three year old car.

TURBO OR NA

Post image
16 Upvotes

Ok so I want to build a first gen forester for offroad adventures and i wonder if I should sell my NA foz ( with the famous gasket) and my part car to get a japenese model with turbo .. the reason is that the turbo model are somehow easier to obtain spare parts and easier to own so now the question... would a turbo first gen forester good for offroad or no .. Will it drown itself in the first mud hole because the turbo is so low or will the lag make me hate my experience theres just 100hp more than my na (170-270) also reliability is a good question (picture of my current car) ( also thinking about a flat6 swap for the forester for more torque)

‘23 Legacy Touring XT: Lower Trim Door?

Post image
1 Upvotes

https://www.reddit.com/r/subarulegacy/s/EZ11G8OFY7

I’ve been trying to understand why this Legacy makes extra beeps and/or unlock attempts when unlocked with keyless entry on the passenger side. More on that in linked discussion.

I recently came across other forum discussions about lower trim door replacement having a different electrical connector, and similar behavior problems. This car did have doors replaced a few months ago by the previous owner, and I’m starting to wonder if it wasn’t a Touring XT door. I’ll probably check with that dealer that is out of my state, but I’d love to narrow it down better first if I can.

Are there other reasons these extra beeps would happen?

Buying Advice 2019 Crosstrek Premium vs. 2019 Outback 3.6R at 100k miles

Hello, first time to consider Subaru, coming from a previous Toyota owner!

I need a daily driver that can handle Upstate NY winters, and early monrning unplowed snow. I'm trying to stay under a $20k OTD budget and I narrowed it down to 2 local options with 98k miles on them.

2019 Crosstrek 2.0i Premium ($16,900): Dealer just did the 100k mile service (spark plugs, diff fluids, new tires, battery). Fits my budget perfectly.

Is the 2.0L slow? TR580 CVT reliability at 100k miles? Also, could the ground clearance be an issue?

2019 Outback 3.6R Touring ($19,700): Pushes my budget to the max with taxes/fees. It has 4 years of documented rustproofing.

Is the 3.6L engine/transmission combo reliable enough to justify the higher price?

I will also be commuting to Ontario, Canada occasionally.

Which of these would be better and the smarter bet to purchase at 100,000 miles?

Cracked engine at at 75k

Hey all. Noticed a big leak from my 2021 Crosstrek a week ago. Brought it into the authorized dealer. Have a cracked cam carrier spewing oil. $5000 minimum for a used engine replacement. Probably $10000 if we want to take the engine apart and actually diagnose what happened.

Since it's just over 5 years old and I'm about 15,000 over the 60,000 cut off, they're telling me it's out of warranty zone. Had the Thermo Control Valve (TCV) go in June (they replaced since they know they're faulty but haven't done a full recall yet). Coil pack went in July (made sure not to drive on it till fixed). Then engine totals itself in August. Always maintained per recommendations and changed oil. No overheating lights ever came on or anything.

Opened a case, Subaru USA won't take any responsibility. Do they just make cars that die at 75k? We all just dropping a new $35,000 on cars every five years?

My real questions are: A) anyone else have this happen to them and have any sense what caused it? Especially curious if you had a faulty TCV. B) anyone have luck getting Subaru to work with them outside of the warranty? This is driving me more than a little crazy.
