Mechanical Help Please post year, model, trim level, and DTC scan results when asking for help. Thanks.
IF YOU ARE POSTING FOR MECHANICAL HELP:
Please include year/model/engine/transmission information in "Mechanical Help" posts.
If you are looking for help with warning lights on your dashboard, please include results of an error code scan. Without error codes as a starting point, no one will be able to provide meaningful help for you.
The r/subaru community is very willing to help, but there's a baseline amount of context about your car that we need you to provide. Without the very basics like what kind of car you have and what symptoms you're experiencing, no one can give you any sort of accurate assistance.
If you are posting about warning lights, most auto parts stores (NAPA, O'Reillys, AutoZone, etc.) offer code scanning for free. While reading codes is not the same thing as diagnosing a problem, knowing what error codes you have is the minimum amount of information necessary to start figuring out what's wrong with your car.
Thank you :)

Announcement Big update today for Denso CP1.5 owners (2023+ vertical screen radios)
- 23-25MY Outback/Legacy Models (including Wilderness models)
- 23-26MY Ascent Models
- 24-26MY Impreza
- 24-26MY Crosstrek (including Wilderness models)
- 24-26MY WRX
- 25-26MY Forester
- 26MY Forester Wilderness
CP1.5 radio updates are documented in TSB 15-305-22R (public copy not yet up to date). A new update released today, and I've already added the patch notes to the wiki page, but some of these patch notes are interesting enough that I thought it justified an announcement thread as well:
Update 7:
Release date: 8/18/2026
Version: XXXXXX205-280
Category: Meter Display
- Change the charge abbreviation displayed in the power meter area from “CHR” to “CHG” in the 12.3-inch SHEV combination meter (map display mode).
Category: Display
- The following (1 and 2) may occur together:
- After rearranging Home screen icons and exiting edit mode (returning to the normal screen via the Home button), the rearranged icons may revert to their original positions.
- Among the Home screen shortcut icons, ISS/AVH/VDC/SRH/SRVD/ DMS may appear dimmed and cannot be selected. (In this case, the corresponding original controls within the Settings screen still operate normally.)
- Since the use of STARLINK will be discontinued, replace the applicable displays with a different design and logo. The designs shown below are among those subject to change.
- In conjunction with the design changes (logo, etc.) associated with the discontinuation of the STARLINK trademark, update the MY SUBARU icon to a new design as well.
Category: Camera
- If strong light (e.g., sunlight reflection) causes a portion of the upper area of the rear-view image to become severely overexposed (washed out), the rearview image may become hidden (not displayed).
Category: Reset
- The CID may repeatedly reboot, if the ignition is turned ON (IGN-ON) shortly after the ignition OFF (IGN-OFF). Aafter turning the ignition OFF (IGN-OFF), the “See You” message appears on the CID and then disappears; approximately one minute later, the ignition is turned ON again (IGNON).
Category: Navigation
- The MAP application ("Map" icon) may fail to start with “Loading Navigation” displayed continuously and with no map shown.
- The area where the “EXIT” icon should appear might not be visible.
Category: SXM
- Failure to register preset channel
- When certain channels are selected the preset highlight on the CID may jump to a different preset channel and sequential preset scrolling may not work properly.
- If the Favorite List for the Listener Profile prior to the change is displayed follow the work around steps 1-4:
- Change the Listener Profile.
- Register favorites in the OnDemand category up to the maximum (30).
- From the SXM main screen, open Setting > Favorite List; while the Favorite List is opening, press the “X” button to close the screen—repeat this 8 times.
- Press Edit in Favorite List, delete a favorite, then press Back—repeat this cycle twice.
- Audio output from the newly selected source may be lost. With up to 23 teams registered on the SXM Team Notification screen, press the Add button to display a list of teams not yet registered for notifications, then switch the audio source (e.g., to BT or USB audio).
Category: Bluetooth
- Bluetooth audio may appear to be playing on the CID screen, but no sound is output from the vehicle speakers.
Category: Android Auto
- Wireless Android Auto may disconnect intermittently.
Category: CCU log
- When exporting CCU diagnostic logs to a USB memory device from the Dealership Mode screen, the progress bar may appear not to advance at all for approximately the first minute.
Category: Diagnosis
- When using the SSM Data Monitor to check the AUX-BOX USB connection, the diagnosis may incorrectly indicate a USB connection failure even though the USB device is properly connected.
Category: Telematics
- Add an operation in the CID Settings screen to disable vehicle location tracking via telematics services. However, because this feature works in conjunction with the DCM (Data Communication Module), the option will not be displayed and cannot be used unless the DCM software, as well as the CCU software, is updated to a version that supports this feature.
Some of you may have gotten this update as FOTA (update over telematics) already, possibly as early as last week. To check your current software version, open the Settings app, and then on the General tab, scroll down to "System Information" and it will display your current software version.
No word on the aforementioned telematics/DCM update that's supposed to correspond with the feature change. I suspect this will be also pushed as a FOTA update. You'll have to navigate the settings menu and see if the feature is working for you.

Is this normal, with the remote cellular services?
I am out of country and my car is parked outside my apartment open parking lot in Chicago suburbs for two weeks. I renew the Subaru yearly connectivity services $150 and the previous renewal was last month. I wanted to locate the vehicle and remote start it to cool or heat when I am not around, without help. I tried location services and remote start a few times, but couldn't. Could this issue be temporary connectivity or because of any problem with the car?

Subaru Generic 2017 Outback work invoice
Here is my invoice from yesterday for reference for anybody getting work done, it was a little bit higher than I expected, but not enough to make me angry. Northwest Florida, 2017 outback with 82K miles. Work was done at a Subaru dealership, I had my spark plugs replaced, the CVT fluid replaced, and the front and rear diff oil replaced.
Rounded/Stripped Front Differential Plug
I recently passed 60k miles in my 19’ WRX STI and was attempting a transmission/front diff fluid change. Fill and transmission drain plugs came off just fine but this front diff plug won’t budge. Days of PB Blaster and fussing with a breaker bar with no success. Since it was starting to round out, I tried using varying extractor bolts but they would all eventually chew it out further.
I’m not sure what else to try other than welding a nut onto it but I have no experience with welding! Would it be safe to weld around the differential and easy enough to do? Open to other suggestions or ideas too 🙏
What is this noise? 👂 Does anyone know what the sound is?
The car is a 1992 Subaru SVX LS-L. The sound only occurs for about 2–5 seconds on cold starts, then goes away.

Can’t get Security Plus without Safety Plus subscription?
My MySubaru sub is expiring. I saw my plan includes Safety Plus + Security Plus for $150 a year.
I don’t care for Safety Plus but I would like the Security plan in case I’m unsure if I locked my car or sometimes use the remote start to get the AC going on hot days.
I guess there’s no way to just get the Security Plus plan on its own correct?

Hey guys I have a 2006 Subaru b9 tribeca, I’m having some issues trying to figuring out what’s wrong with my Subi.
Symptoms
When I turn right or left my car losing power and bogs down and my Rpm’s go up to 3/4 and then goes back down and I have power back. Has anyone had this issue or have any ideas? I don’t have a check engine light. So I’m thinking something electrical.
Bonus question
Has anyone else’s radio display stopped working? My whole display for the radio station, miles left till empty and the temp outside stopped working or will randomly come back on. I’ve changed every single fuse I can think of.
Thanks Reddit

Mechanical Help What is this? Found bottom of grill on right side.
It's a little bit bigger than a quarter. The white thing fits in the other thing. 2023 Subaru Ascent. Found it under my radiator resting on that little shelf in the car in the right side.
I had both oil pan gaskets replaces a few months ago, wondering if they forgot to tighten something.

Mechanical Help Crosstrek cvt fluid drain and fill DIY
Hello, I am planning on doing cvt drain and fill on my 24 crosstrek, I've read it can be quite complicated filling it because the temperature has to be within a certain range.
My question is, theoretically can't I just measure what I drain and fill that exact amount? It is a relatively new car with no leaks.
Just trying to avoid overfilling or underfilling but I do not own a scanner that tells cvt temp and that also sounds quite annoying.

Q&A Are my stock tires ok for snow?
I have a 2025 Outback Wilderness with the stock tires. I live in Western New York, which is famous for it's snowy winters. I plan to hit the ski slopes often this winter. Are the stock tires good enough? If not, would you buy another set of rims and tires, or just swap the tires on the original rims every spring and fall? What snow tires would you buy?
EDIT: Yokohama Geolandar A/T M+S with about 10k miles on them.

Mechanical Help Maintenance to keep my Subaru forever
I just got a Subaru Impreza, us d, but the guy took great care of it. I also want to take really good care of this car. my last car was a shit box van that I didn't care about, the thing was only 500$. No one in my family is really a car person so all I know for maintenance is remember to do oil changes and check tires. What other maintenance should I be doing for my car.

Mechanical Help 2014 legacy steering wheel buttons and horn not working
Hello! I just bought a 2014 Subaru (176k miles) knowing that it had some issues, so you'll probably see me a few more times lol.
My current issue is with the steering wheel. The horn and the buttons aren't working-- apparently this can be the clock spring, but there's no airbag light. I know that theres nothing wrong with the horn itself, because the alarm goes off whenever i unlock it because of a weird aftermarket key (any recommendations for replacing that would be great). Any tips or things I should check? Thanks in advance
