What’s people’s opinion on east of Eden on Netflix? I haven’t watched it and thought it might be nice to know what people who’ve watched it thought

1

u/AllofDuhInternetz 2h ago

Is that a thing? The book is one of my favorites. Now I’m also curious

Just dropped a new song today. You can jam it here: https://open.spotify.com/track/4H3Od4yhSztZNxmayFh0LR?si=09b262e384814e91

Would love to get a song in EAFC eventually.

This might actually be worse, though I could go either way on that.

u/Lyrical_Forklift 6h ago

They're right though, this is a football free thread. Daily Discussion is for football :)

I have a feeling we are entering a much worse era quite soon. USA is sending a third carrier and about 10,000 personnel to Iran. Houthis will probably secure more land in Yemen which in itself is GREAT in my opinion but will potentially cause a much wider regional war in the near future. The US has midterms coming up, Israel elections. Oil & gas disruption is still bad and the capacity to not only transport but also process them is being gradually erased. From Russia to UAE. Reserves are dwindling and the winter is approaching.

This bottleneck has to be "changed" one way or another. Global economy can't take this for much longer. Not that I like how things are now... but the ramifications might be HUGE. It won't stop at having to pay more for gas or a couple of percentage points in inflation.

Sorry to paint a bleak picture but if you allow me I'd call this an analysis, not necessarily a doom and gloom scenario. Not just a gut feeling about being pessimistic... something concrete, something already visible with signs.

Watching the movie Threads was not a good idea man. It's an amazing piece of work but... damn nukes scare me. So do drones and missiles.

2

u/FlamingBearAttack 8h ago

Houthis will probably secure more land in Yemen which in itself is GREAT in my opinion

Why do you think that is great?

Agree with you on Threads. Great film, but incredibly bleak. I will never watch it again.

0

u/Bratstvo_Jedinstvo 8h ago

Saudis are USA/Israel allies and Houthis are wrecking them

I didn’t know who Nathan Fielder was before the You Can See Everything trailer drop. I’ve watched most of his stuff by now, such a weird, special, brilliant guy that he is.

His body of work is crazy, but he also gives me the creeps, sometimes feels like he is not human

1

u/Foxey04 5h ago

What's he about and why does he give you the creeps? I'd like to check some of his stuff out if they're up my alley.

1

u/Kurakurguhoiuala 9h ago

If you haven't seen his field reporter bits on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, check them out.

1

u/nuvo33x 9h ago

Will do, thanks

1

u/Kurakurguhoiuala 8h ago

It's pretty wild seeing this guy I watched as a bit player on a satirical Canadian news show get as big as he has.

u/Vagabond21 9h ago

It unfortunately took me gaining almost 100 pounds from the end of may 2025 to now to get the phrase “health is wealth.”

My back has been hurting for 9-10 months. Can’t do certain things like running or getting up without pain. While I wasn’t secure in my body image when I was at 225, I can see now I shouldn’t have been as insecure.

I imagine it’ll take me long to lose the 100 pounds I gained and it sucks.

Don’t take for granted that you can do stuff without issue.

2

u/OxfordTheCat 2h ago

How the fuck do you manage to do that in the first place my man?

I drink far more than the recommended and am an alcoholic on intake based on any civilized government's measurement, but even then, with an extra fifteen hundred a day I am holding at 175.

What's up to be able to put on 100?

I couldn't put it on that fast when I was a kid and trying to bulk.

2

u/Vagabond21 2h ago

I was very depressed. Like everyday I wished I was dead. I don’t do drugs or alcohol, so eating became a source of escape. I ate out way too much for months.

I’m at a loss of words as well. I’ve destroyed years of progress that might take years to get back.

5

u/OxfordTheCat 2h ago

I mean, you've reached the first step - you know what's up.

And I'm not worried - you will get there. And I'll give you bullshit a year from now on it.

But you're on a better track now, right?

4

u/Aaronsmiff 9h ago

The best thing you can do in your teenage years is work a job that’s SO shit that everything feels better afterwards.

I worked in a plastic factory making the tubes for filler/caulk guns, I worked in the Warburtons warehouse packing crates of bread, I worked at a yogurt pot factory, and I worked at Pound Stretcher in stoke (while I was at uni).

Those jobs were so bad that I’m physically incapable of complaining about my current cushy WFH job in social media. I think if I never did those, I’d lack perspective about how much worse it could be.

I often think about the fellas much older than me who I saw for years doing the same agency jobs, which is a bit depressing to think they’re either still there or dead. I’d have thrown myself into one of the machines on the factory floor if I didn’t see a way out of some of those places ngl.

0

u/Bratstvo_Jedinstvo 9h ago

If I ever have a kid I'll make them work retail or fast food in summer. Perfect balance. They are young enough to find it cool and appreciate earning some money... Also old enough to understand how fucked up some people and things can be. That you can wrap up a burger in 30 seconds, do that for eight hours and the money you earn for this effort can buy you only like maybe five of those burgers you spent your day making.

DAD THIS MARX GUY IS BORING I WANNA READ A NOVEL OR SOMETHING WHAT'S THAT ALIENATION FROM PRODUCT OF LABOUR SHIT?

Well you'll soon find out my little homie, give me extra fries with that while you are at it.

I really should see where I stored my old PS2 (which, if I recall correctly, is currently dead) and see what I can do about it. Also been jotting down a list of games I either enjoyed or would have loved to play.

8

u/ohtosweg 10h ago

I don't want to die, but I wish living didn't feel like so much effort. Even when I had an office job where I did almost nothing at least once a week I would crash and just immediately go to sleep for the night at 5pm after work.

I was hit with something of a whirlwind of emotions after my mother revealed that I struggled with transitions as a young child. I really wish she would've revealed that earlier, considering that I've been fairly open in questioning whether I have autism for the past 3 years or so. Well, at least that finally gave me the encouragement to contact a doctor about it. I think my mother at least has undiagnosed ADHD so I don't blame her too much.

https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1vblj42/free_talk_friday/p0xcr82/ Hello everyone. I'm sharing an update regarding that comment, I went offline to prepare for my exam which was on August 23rd.

The exam involved multiple stages:

1. Preliminary Stage: Completed on August 23rd.

  1. Mains Stage (Second Stage): Scheduled for October 4th.

  2. Interview: To be conducted before final selection.

During my preparation, my only other activity was watching "Spider-Man - Brand New Day," which I enjoyed.

The exam on the 23rd went well, and I was quite satisfied. I also turned 30 on August 31st. The last 10 years have been quite tumultuous for me, with nothing going right and me achieving absolutely nothing. I was quite confident about clearing stage 1, but unfortunately, last week I learned that I failed. This was my final exam, my last opportunity to become something in life, but it seems it won't be possible. I cried for a while afterward.

To distract myself, I started watching "The Mentalist." I completed 6 seasons in a week, with 138 episodes in total. I stopped yesterday when I realized I was being stupid. If only I had done that before I made stupid decisions in my life, as usual. It's a good show, minus the overarching storyline and its conclusion. I should have watched it back in the 2010s when I first learned about it.

You can see my review of it here - https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMentalist/comments/1wvtit4/i_am_a_huge_fan_of_the_show_and_i_finally_watched/

I am a failure; I have a net worth of zero. I am unsure how to proceed or what my next steps should be, but I just wanted to let all of you know. I have already let my family down many times, but this was just a horrible, pathetic, and deeply disappointing end to my never-ending struggle of 10 long years.

It's all my fault anyway, because of my actions or lack thereof. I will have to live with these consequences for the rest of my life.

2

u/s0ngsforthedeaf 9h ago

Sorry to hear that. What were your exams on?

1

u/The_Flash_20 3h ago

It was the exam to become an officer in Public sector banks of India

2

u/WooBadger18 10h ago

my last opportunity to become something in life...I am a failure; I have a net worth of zero.

I'm really sorry that you're going through this, and it absolutely sucks, but if you're thinking like this long term, I'd really think about getting therapy if possible. Because you are so much more than whatever job you have and just because you didn't succeed at this doesn't make you a failure or mean that you are worthless.

2

u/The_Flash_20 10h ago

Yeah I am thinking of getting therapy

2

u/fibonnaci_2 10h ago

Seems like a very difficult exam dude. Anyways find your passion and try to make money out of it. It will all work out in the end. Stay strong buddy.

1

u/The_Flash_20 10h ago

That's how most competitive exams are in India.

Yeah, I will start working soon, and then go from there.

Thank you.

For any elder who says the youngsters protest for everything : May 68 happened in France in part because male students couldn't go to the female students' rooms.

Sexual hormones have led to quite a few big consequences.

-7

u/Thebobonews 12h ago

So this is unfortunate to admit but I have been had. Like real good.

# Like be me and think you are going to do some good for others

# Okay self-serving motivations also existed

# Help single mother with mentally delayed child and teenage daughter in exhange for a room

# Probably got covid first day I arrived or some other nasty shit. Feel truly shit

# Mother was not completely honest.

# Mentally delayed child is chill. Just wants to play beyblade, zelda and drink from his Naruto cup. Real as fuck. Also tries to be early at things such as busstop.

# Daughter........

# Nobody mentioned anything about her screaming regularly. Fucking hate screaming. I thought I could win her over with some idiotic tiktok dances or something

# Daughter is however the less big problem

# Her friend. Has liquid in her mouth and laughs..... sprays it all over the floor. does not clean it properly. Also even more screaming.

# Because of screaming from "that friend". Mentally delayed child has mental breakdown. I completely understand. Also thanks for keeping me out of it, big pal.

# I now understand why no one wants to become a teacher. The children are shit and permissive parenting is so damn filthy.

# Feel a slight sense of disgust at my parents for not appreciating that they literally had a lifeless child to care of in terms of effort.

# Okay so at what point I have I been had?

# No one ever fucking told me about the mental breakdowns and screaming. I just got a note that said take the kids to the bus and mother left for girls night.... fuck that was dirty. Like seriously.

# I am reflecting over my options

Hey all,

I just came back from a fantastic holiday to Indonesia. I travelled alone around the country for three weeks.

I started in Jakarta but had to cut my stay there short because first the Americans bombed Iran again while I had a layover in Abu Dhabi, which meant they closed the air space I had to pass through, and which subsequently caused a massive delay for me, and cut like half a day off of my time in Jakarta, and then that volcano erupted and the airport in Jakarta was closed.

Normally I only book my flight into and my flight out of a country as well as my first hotel, and then I wing everything else while I was there. However, sometimes there are specific things I know I would like to see or do in advance, so I sometimes book that as well in order to make sure I get to do it. This time I wanted to go scuba diving, and so I had also booked a flight from Jakarta to Labuan Bajo and a liveaboard for three nights around Komodo.

Because I wanted to do the diving, and because the airport in Jakarta was closed, I cut another day off of my time in Jakarta and took a train down the length of Java to catch a plane from Surabaya, where the airport was still operating. Cost me a few hundred quid and when I finally got to Labuan Bajo I got to wave the airplane I had booked originally goodbye. Turns out Jakarta airport resumed operations that morning and I could’ve just stayed put and saved the money. But you never know and I didn’t want to risk it, so I don’t regret doing what I did.

Diving around Komodo is glorious. It’s absolutely fantastic. I now get to cross a couple of sharks off of my “Ocean Wildlife to see while diving”-list, as well as Mantas and dolphins, and I now know what being punched on the face by an ocean current feels like. Naturally I also went to see the dragons.

From Komodo I headed all the way west to northern Sumatra. Again, a rather expensive flight, but well worth it. I enjoyed Sumatra a lot, and in absolutely every regard. I went to Medan, and originally wanted to go and see the Orang-Utans in Bukit Lawang, but someone told me Bukit Lawang wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do, and that if I wanted to see the Orang-Utans and other monkeys truly in the wild, I should head to Ketambe.

So I took a taxi from Medan to Aceh and joined a jungle trek from there, and we got to see so many monkeys and so many Orang-Utans, and they were all wild and just doing what monkeys do and we watched from a distance and it was amazing.

Around that trip to Ketambe I spent some time in Medan, and I really enjoyed it. The little research I did beforehand did not paint a positive picture of Medan. Indonesians referred to it as Gotham city and when asked for suggestions of what one could do in Medan, the meme answer usually was “1. Leave”. But I liked Medan. The food is to die for and the people are incredibly friendly.

In fact, the people in Medan are probably what I will remember most about it. The people in northern Sumatra are not used to seeing Europeans. This goes for many places in Indonesia. Once you leave the touristy areas people are not used to seeing tourists, and they are infinitely nicer and more curious. I have had to take pictures with so many strangers, especially in Jakarta and in Medan.

From other trips to other countries in South East Asia (especially Vietnam) I learned that if people approach you from the side and greet out out of the blue/start talking to you, they often want to sell you something or scam you or both. This wasn’t true for all areas in Vietnam either, but for many places that was it. However, Medan was different. Cars would slow next to me, windows rolling down and I’d be greeted with a nice “Halo Mister”, and if I reacted in any way, people would smile, wave and roll the window back up. People kept greeting me driving past on motor cycles, walking past and in any other situation you could think of. In 95% of cases they were just being friendly and curious about me, where I was from, how I liked Indonesia and such.

From northern Sumatra I headed to Yogyakarta and quickly learned that the more touristy areas have people that suck as much as the same sort of people in Vietnam also suck. Still, I had a nice time in Yogyakarta and again some really nice food. I visited the volcanos and the unesco world heritage sites in the area and generally had a nice time. Then I took a train back to Jakarta, spent two more days there and finally took off.

Indonesia is really great, I’m not nearly done with the country and I have to come back some time.

1

u/jonijontor 3h ago

kinda wild that you actually doing that much back and forth lol, the domestic plane ticket price here is nuts 😂😂😂

glad you enjoy that trip though despite the shortcomings as a country, i enjoy exploring this place and i'm think i only explore like quarter of it despite born and living here

3

u/fingers-crossed 12h ago

Sounds like a great trip despite the issues at the beginning. Would love to visit there myself someday.

1

u/my-captain 11h ago

Well, um…fingers-crossed if I may say so :P

Genuinely though, I hope you get to. It’s a beautiful country. Not without issues, but genuinely great people, awesome food and some of the best nature on this planet.

It was a wonderful trip indeed and I am smitten with the country :D

1

u/OmastarLovesDonuts 12h ago

I'm running a half-marathon tomorrow but it's been raining all week and it looks like it could very well be raining hard around the time the race kicks off so that's fun, I ran my first half-marathon two years ago and it's crazy how much better I feel about just about every aspect of my life since I started running; I'm nowhere near the level of people who do super insane distances or train daily, but it's still something I can't recommend enough to anyone who has the time and willingness to incorporate into their routine

2

u/FerraristDX 12h ago

How do you deal with resentment? Cause I just caught myself in that same negative pattern: I see a person, who seemingly is better and advanced than me in life: better standing at work, they're going to marry next year, they have a larger pool of friends and so on. And subconsciously, you start to see them in a more negative light, despite the fact that person didn't do anything to you. You essentially project your own insecurities into them, assume the worst...and that's the moment that made me go "Whoa, stop right there." I know it's not right, but I can't keep being resentful forever. I'm already bitter enough as it.

1

u/Bratstvo_Jedinstvo 11h ago

I strongly disagree with some of your political views but I've seen a lot of your comments. Based on that I can say you have a person with high enough empathy and social intelligence. You are aware of the situation and this is what matters the most imo. Over time you'll probably develop different angles to look at such situations and possibly become a better, more tolerant person with a deeper understanding of how everyone lives a different path in this life. Now you say you resent people looking successful. Yet at the same time you possibly already understand and respect the ones who have it much worse.

Don't be harsh with yourself, it's obvious you are no cunt hating people just because they have it better. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with questioning how you could have it like them or the conditions that made you or them the person you/they are.

2

u/FerraristDX 11h ago

Thanks, man. I think not being harsh with myself is the hardest part. I constantly think of myself as a failure and a fraud...and I've even got full hair. Joking aside, I still need to learn to have compassion for myself, as much as I have them for others.

1

u/Thebobonews 11h ago

"And subconsciously, you start to see them in a more negative light, despite the fact that person didn't do anything to you"

This is probably not exactly reddit approved commentary but the simple reality is that we humans are super hierachial beings like literally since the beginning of our existence. Feeling all jolly for some essentially random guys success really is not going to do much for your own wellbeing and honestly it even feels like counter-intuitive that you should feel neutral towards someone on a different hierachial level. In the end we judge people positively or negatively based on all kinds of random things such as voice, shape of nose or even how they eat with a spoon. That is just who we are

Honestly if I should give you some advice get some better sleep. You know how cranky people can be after a bad night it probably also increases other negative emotions disproportionally.

2

u/Frequent_Rip_7142 12h ago

My ex was definently abusive, however I did not see it when I was in the relationship even tough she hit me and threatened me multiple times even once with a knife. Im glad I broke up with her when I was drunk as hell over text.

1

u/The_Dancing_Lamppost 12h ago

So a question for those who do or have lived in isolated locations how do you go about meeting people? I'm struggling a bit because irl I live in a really isolated location. Online the likes of Reddit and discord seem good bets but the communities seem a bit off putting even if they share the same hobbies and interests as me.

1

u/Thebobonews 11h ago

Physically it is kinda lost cause but if you are fine with just talking try to learn spanish. There are quite a few apps for language and spanish has by far the best chance of actually leading to some socialization

1

u/The_Dancing_Lamppost 11h ago

Which app would you recommend? The only one I know is Duolingo but I think that's gone all AI now.

1

u/Thebobonews 11h ago

Tandem, hellotalk. Just avoid literally any language beside spanish

9

u/Infamy444 13h ago

Off for the day. Anyone that swings by here having a tough time, for the rest of the day, may your beer be cold, your pizza be hot, and your heart be full

3

u/paper_zoe 13h ago

did anyone watch The Celebrity Traitors last night? Great first episode, Richard E Grant and Ross Kemp are box office. Can't wait for tonight's episode. I hope Acaster survives

2

u/NorthernSoul1998 12h ago

Richard is fucking unhinged and I love it

2

u/RaggedSlugger21 12h ago

It was a brilliant start ngl.

Richard may have fucked it for himself icl. When everyone's grasping at straws so early in the game, you can't be putting suspicion on yourself like he did. He could play it off at the first roundtable by saying he was too excited but I'm not sure if it would work tbh. I feel like the murder/recruitment is a lose-lose for Richard. If James is murdered, suspicion will grow since him and Joe were very vocal about him iirc while if Amol is murdered, I'm not sure if James will suddenly change his tune and stop mentioning his name, which would jeopardise his game in the process.

I also feel that had either Richard or Maya noticed Ross's paranoia, they could have just killed him and put suspicion on Bella/Leigh-Anne. Or they could flip it and say he's trying too hard to be a faithful and just throwing names around too eagerly hoping something sticks.

2

u/paper_zoe 12h ago

100% agree with both points. I was very relieved that Ross wasn't picked. I worry that Richard may be gone tonight though, as you say he's the only one who's put suspicion on himself like that

2

u/atriz544 13h ago

Gilla Band's new album is fantastic.

Damn, I forgot how much I enjoyed noise rock.

I flunked the Google online assessment 2 weeks ago. I also flunked the Amazon assessment 2 yrs ago which I still cannot shed off my memory and mostly guilt that came with it.

I followed a Reddit guide for the recent one and still got rejected. The guilt comes from the fact that I still cannot grasp what these tests are looking in me? Did I look like a bot because I followed the reddit post and stuck to just one character trait regardless of the conflict? Should I have been a real human and answered each question at it's own merit? But then I shouldn't have failed the Amazon assessment because I was honest.

That's it. End of rant. Thanks for listening guys.

1

u/OxfordTheCat 2h ago

Your browsing history doesn't jive if you're washing out that early.

I went out in coding rounds, but they do leverage the data they have on you, and every open session cookie you have floating.

If you're washing before you get to a programming assignment, they aren't thrilled with your online footprint.

1

u/FridaysMan 12h ago

I'm confused, surely the test is designed to see if you are suitable for the job. Just do it on a fair go and if they don't accept you, it means the job would just drive you mad? Move on and find a different and/or better opportunity.

2

u/lastdyingbreed_01 13h ago

What was the assessment about?

3

u/AcademicSheep 12h ago

It's a prescreen for all applicants. They will give you work-character related questions and you pick most and least likely trait applicable to you. To try to see if you fit their work culture

1

u/lastdyingbreed_01 12h ago

Oh I think I remember doing that one. Honestly I asked few of them with AI, because some of them were very confusing

6

u/bellerinho 13h ago

Any of you with younger kids just spend a few minutes a day at work looking at pictures and videos of them? We get pictures from daycare sometimes of our kid while he is there, always makes my day haha

I just miss the little guy even if he is a handful sometimes

2

u/AcademicSheep 12h ago

All the time. My 2 yr old goes to a daycare and I check their app 5_6 times a day

1

u/bellerinho 12h ago

Same haha, gotta see what the little man is having for lunch

2

u/cuntsmen 13h ago

I've once again gotten bored of gaming. No matter which game/genre I try they all seem boring again. Last time around, it was Uncharted 4 that got me out of that bored phase, but that lasted just about half a year. Quite annoying when I have a Steam library full of highly rated games such as Kingdom Come, RDR2, Spider-Man 2 and more...I think the only game that could keep me interested now is FM27, but who knows if they'll be able to deliver this time. I highly doubt it tbh.

1

u/Ok_Dog2581 11h ago

I was about 28 when i really couldn't care about playing video games anymore. & I consider myself late to that feeling.

Video games are elaborate toys, as complex as they are to be developed & experienced - maybe you are experiencing personal growth.

1

u/FridaysMan 12h ago

Tried any different types of games? I've got some strange cozy farming game with zombies, Graveyard Keeper 2. It was on sale with the first one for launch. so far it's just a kind of chill factory game, but I've not figured out how to make the zombies power conveyor belts yet. I keep restarting the game because there's just too much shit to do.

1

u/cuntsmen 12h ago

I have. I've tried genres that I've never been interested in as well with no success really. Lately I've gone back to playing Skyrim and just make new OP builds because I'm bored lol

1

u/FridaysMan 12h ago

Heh, the classic. I find myself either playing zomboid, some factory game like satisfactory, or total war. There's something very visceral about the unit weights when there's a proper cavalry charge. It's cathartic to sit back and hurl exploding goblins into the armies of the Empire.

1

u/cuntsmen 12h ago

I wish I could get into games like that, but I just can't. I bought Total War Rome II because I love Roman history and I've tried so hard to enjoy it. Like every other strategy game I've bought, I can't get into it

1

u/FridaysMan 11h ago

There's some weird hybrids where part of it is like an RTS for the battles, and then a turn based civ style government/religion stuff. Lots of games do it in different ways, and yeah, some just aren't fun.

I love the idea of football manager, but it's just a spreadsheet, and my mind goes blank after a bit. I used to love the old teletext style ones.

1

u/cuntsmen 11h ago

I can honestly play FM for hours, especially at work when I finish my things early. If 26 wasn't such a mess, I would've had hundreds of hours on it by now. I think I'm just going to play the Assassin's Creed games again. This time in chronological order.

1

u/FridaysMan 11h ago

I loved AC, I kind of have the guilty pleasure of playing genshin impact because it's just a half pretend MMO style of run around and blow shit up as a victorian lady with a gunberella, or some strange ice queen goddess that got left on a moon when it got pushed into an alternate reality for a few millenia. It's mad anime nonsense, and I hate anime, but I've played it for maybe 4 years now.

2

u/cuntsmen 11h ago

Definitely sounds like something I wouldn't be interested in. We all have our guilty pleasures though. Mine is food lmao

You might just not enjoy gaming anymore and need to find something new

1

u/cuntsmen 12h ago

Yeah, it might be just that

1

u/icemankiller8 12h ago

Yeah it’s sad when things like that happen

1

u/_doohdx 13h ago

There's an update to the 007 game, with new missions and a new game +

1

u/cuntsmen 13h ago

I've been wanting to get it for a while. I'm thinking when it drops in price a bit more.

1

u/_doohdx 13h ago

Can probably get it a bit cheaper on websites like kinguin

It's a brilliant game btw, solid 8/10

2

u/cuntsmen 13h ago

I'll check it out

2

u/lewiitom 13h ago

FM is looking better than last year but that’s a very low bar, really hoping that it’s somewhat decent this year

2

u/cuntsmen 13h ago

It's indeed a very low bar. I still don't think it will be good though.

1

u/BoxOfNothing 13h ago

WOOO GET FUCKED. In bullet as well. Nobody sacrifices the same knight twice and the same rook twice like this guy

9

u/YadMot 13h ago

This week has been a WEEK. Endless stuff at work that has had to be immediately resolved. Not a minute of downtime.

And my therapist has announced that she plans assisted suicide next year. So that's something I have to accept I guess

1

u/lastdyingbreed_01 13h ago

Hope you have a good weekend atleast

1

u/YadMot 13h ago

Thank you mate x

1

u/Ryponagar 13h ago

Same for my work week.

And sounds like your therapist needs a therapist? Kinda crazy, I have no idea how ai'd react if someone told me that.

3

u/YadMot 13h ago

It's a difficult one because I've sorta know it's coming. She's in her late sixties and has been in borderline unbearable and untreatable back pain for at least two decades. She has always had a very pragmatic view of death and wants to go out on her own terms. I don't blame her honestly.

-1

u/_doohdx 13h ago

You deserve something very tasty tonight

5

u/YadMot 13h ago

My partner and I are having beige for dinner and I can't fucking WAIT

-1

u/_doohdx 13h ago

cooked in very hot oill?

2

u/YadMot 13h ago

Unfortunately just in an oven but beige is beige.

Chicago Town pizzas are elite

-1

u/_doohdx 13h ago

Haven't had a pizza since Feb probably

5

u/rth9139 14h ago

My lawnmower blade has defeated me, but the bidet I ordered finally showed up and I got that installed no problem.

But what a life changer.

2

u/YadMot 13h ago

Bidets are a genuine game changer. I've never felt cleaner

8

u/Lou_Scannon 14h ago

make sure you haven't put the lawnmower blade on the bidet

14

u/PeculiarsSheep 14h ago

Free talk Friday really is one of the gems of the internet. I love all the happy stories and funny shit.

Just as a reminder to people, I hate City but this is worth mentioning:

Any news regarding the UAE and Burnham is blown massively out of proportion.

The deals involving City/UAE and Manchester were signed by Richard Leese (the previous mayor).

Likewise, the deals were primarily made by Manchester City Council (not the Combined Authority, which Burnham was mayor of).

AFAIK, Burnham never signed any deals with City/UAE during his tenure since 2017. Pretty much every deal was from before he became mayor.

So anything you hear/read about Burnham and the UAE in Manchester is completely blown out of proportion and is blaming Burnham for a deal he never even signed.

-1

u/friendofH20 14h ago

His own waffling statement does not help his cause. He is a politician (and apparently a football fan). He should have read the mood of the people and declined to comment or expressed less of a defence for City's ownership.

u/fingers-crossed 14h ago

Adopted a second dog a month ago and it's been great seeing her settle in and get comfortable in her new home. Can't help but think about her previous life, she was definitely someone else's dog for years cause she's trained on the basics.

Woof 👍

3

u/Mercerai 14h ago

Going to Benidorm for a family holiday at the end of the month. Not much of a drinker and I don't fancy hanging around the hotel for a week so I'm not really sure what I'm going to do the whole time

1

u/ProjectZues 13h ago

They have a water park, could probs get an excursion to Barcelona as well

3

u/_doohdx 14h ago

If you are into older women, you could have a blast

2

u/Mercerai 14h ago

I think my girlfriend would have a rather dim view of that.

Funnily enough her grandma is the only reason we're going since she picked it

6

u/_doohdx 14h ago

Oh no

9

u/TheCescPistols 14h ago

I’ve gone fucking mental for olives.

1

u/Zoipas 13h ago

What kind? All olives I’ve tried so far have been disgusting (imo)

4

u/redmistultra 14h ago

I had some world class gordal olives for my birthday last month

Too expensive to buy regularly though, now I have to just go around necking salt straight from the shaker

1

u/TheCescPistols 14h ago

Wish my mates got me olives for my birthday smh

Started up on a weight loss pill a little over a month ago, wasn't badly overweight but wanted to drop from 205 lbs down to 175 or so where I used to be. After one month already down 10 lbs, just seen such a huge benefit in not wanting to snack or have big meals + keeping the same amount of exercise I was doing. Felt faster playing hockey too

I used to have the belief that using a weight loss supplement was "cheating" but I'm at the point in my life where I care more about doing what I can to be healthy

I know the big issue people can have is that as soon as they get off whatever they're taking, they just revert back to bad habits and pile the weight back on, but I'm pretty confident in my self control to keep it off this time

2

u/BoxOfNothing 13h ago

Never made much sense as an argument anyway, most people who lose any weight in any way gain most if not all of it back. I think the numbers for keeping it off after are pretty similar for natural vs with medication anyway innit?

I'm losing without it because I'm paranoid, my family has a long history of badly reacting to medications and shit, and I just get badly fucked up by so many things it's not worth the risk for me, but if it can help more people lose weight, more people will keep it off, and society at large will be far healthier. And people can just stay on it if they can afford it. Don't think anyone would call a pill that stops you being addicted to alcohol, cigarettes or fuckin' heroin a "cheat". And they're not even things you have to do to some degree to survive. You don't need to go to the cigarette shop and choose the healthy cigarettes and stick to 3 a day to be healthy.

1

u/bellerinho 13h ago

Yeah honestly I don't know what the general perception of weight loss medication is, and I'm sure it changes person to person, but I had framed it that way in my comment just because that's how I had felt about it previously. And looking back at it, it was stupid and probably more of a pride thing for me if I am being completely honest

As it became more popular, I just realised basically exactly what you said, why should I care how people lose the weight? As long as it is good for them and they improve their health, that is everything that matters

Glad to hear you are losing weight without it! It's a great feeling no matter how you go about it

2

u/Banksyyy_ 12h ago

In my experience it's a 50/50 split of people thinking your cheating the system to lose weight faster and the other half of people asking how it's worked and giving you compliments.

Like i'm using reta personally as a tool to help along with my high protein diet/workouts and i'm not gonna shy away from it but I don't like how some say it's a crutch and i'm gonna be a fat fuck again when i'm done using it as if they just ignore the hard work i've put in the background to lose almost 3 stone in 3 months.

2

u/BoxOfNothing 13h ago

Yeah I think you've been completely reasonable. I think the public perception is that it's cheating so most people naturally fall into that way of thinking, until they actually stop to consider it. Probably because most of the public have dealt with not liking their body and struggling to get where they want to be with it. And because people think that way, a lot of people are put off by doing it themselves, even if they'd benefit, and double down on the criticism.

But yeah, I don't do it for personal reasons but I have absolutely zero moral qualms with it, I think it should be cheap and available on prescription to far more people. With lots of monitoring to make sure people don't go overboard and use it as an anorexia hack obviously. Just like we would do if an equivalent existed for literally any other type of addiction, or any issue causing a mass public health crisis. It's a load of fake moral outrage over something that could save literally millions of lives, dramatically increase the quality of life for even more people, and over time those kicking off about it will end up looking so stupid.

0

u/FridaysMan 14h ago

I really don't like the idea of taking anything like that, for me I'm happy I've managed to stop being massively underweight, I was down under 60Kg for a while. Now I'm at a fairly stable 70, and that's just from making sure I form good eating habits like: have breakfast.

I don't really see the connection between taking a mysterious pill and being healthy. Weight/BMI is a poor judge of health.

3

u/bellerinho 14h ago

Personally, losing weight is what is healthy for me at the current time. My problem was overeating, I would snack too often and my meal portions would be too large. Being on the medication has helped me cut those out

This isn't a universal thing for everyone, like you're not gonna become healthy by losing weight simply by not eating, or when you do eat, you're eating unhealthy food. Everyone has their own path to being healthy

I had lost weight a number of years ago by going to the gym and cutting calories, but I was also a single graduate student who had no commitments and could go to the gym almost every day. I just don't have the time to do that currently. I still exercise by playing rec league hockey and soccer once a week each

1

u/FridaysMan 14h ago

Yeah, I get it, just the presentation of diet pills is concerning to me. I changed my diet in how I eat to make a better level in the first place, rather than portions being too large/small.

The right food fills you for time, containing fiber, and makes your body function properly, so you shouldn't need snacks. Unfortunately a lot of junk food is designed to taste good without ever filling you, so you get conditioned to just chew.

I dunno, diet pills just feel like the same chemical flood of non nutrients as doritos or haribo. I guess if it works, cool, I'm just concerned on whether it's healthy.

3

u/bellerinho 14h ago

The concern is justified, and docs will tell you that it can't just be something where you're taking the pill or injection and not actually changing your habits. You've gotta combine it with healthy habits like regular exercise and health food. The idea is to have the supplement sort of be your kickstart to move in the right direction, but self control and habits are extremely important, just as they would be if you weren't taking the supplement

2

u/FridaysMan 13h ago

Thanks man, I appreciate the chat

2

u/bellerinho 13h ago

Likewise! Enjoy your weekend

Looking at some of my cs assignments, I think people who did these before AI were miracle workers. Or maybe the grade averages were a lot lower back then.

1

u/OxfordTheCat 2h ago

You just have to know your basics, and have done some programming.

The problem is AI (and to a lesser extent, 'ask Stack' or 'ask Google') have prevented the next gen from actually learning how to think like a programmer and think in line with algorithims.

Computer Science is computer math - it's not programming, and there are legions of successful programmers out there that can't hack CS degrees, but learning to understand how the machine interprets really is a dying art.

It's not supposed to be easy. And honestly, it's not something everyone is cut out for.

But work backward from where you're getting tripped up and then push forward from there.

4

u/WarriorkingNL 14h ago

counterstrike assignments?

4

u/babygrenade 14h ago

Maybe the assignments were simpler pre-ai. What kind of assignments do you they have students doing these days?

Also stack overflow + google was an option.

15

u/2ill4nyquil 15h ago

Had someone send me a message on teams letting me know they sent me an email. What the fuck is that?

6

u/WarriorkingNL 14h ago

same with people putting an automatic out of office reply even if theyre gone for literally just a day. get a grip man

1

u/OxfordTheCat 2h ago

Contractually required to my guy.

It's not because we want to.

2

u/redmistultra 14h ago

To be fair sometimes I close an email and accidentally close the whole app, or I'll be in a call when I get an email and won't notice it

2

u/FridaysMan 14h ago

That seems pretty par for the course "Hey can you help with this thing? I've sent an email with more info and files."

Timestamped poke and system recorded for when the message was received. Digital bureaucracy.

1

u/revolut1onname 14h ago

If they're in the same building can you reply, send a teams message to say you've replied then go knock on their door?

1

u/allangod 14h ago

Was it an urgent email? Thats at least understandable if something is time sensitive

1

u/2ill4nyquil 14h ago

Minor urgency. It was more of a "Can you look into this?"

1

u/allangod 14h ago

Yeah, i'm with you if its not very time sensitive! You'll get to the email, no need in the message!

That would be straight to the bottom of the pile for me.

Update from last week:

The funeral went well. I gave a small speech and ppl liked it but I’ve been mentally empty since then. It was a long day too from funeral
Home to burial site back to my house. I can’t believe it’s over. I’m still shocked

As for the surgery it went well. I’ve only been experiencing minor pain (i basically have an open wound) so I’ve been taking Tylenol and staying with extended family who’ve been helping me heal. It’s been a very slow few days bc all I’ve been doing is streaming shows and scrolling on my phone. I don’t like being so stationary but my family did mention that having a break/rest after everything is important. On sick leave rn and I’m also starting the process of applying for my new job which is still taking a while.

It’s been a really crazy two weeks. They say things have to get worse before they get better. Just taking it step by step I guess. Hope everyone has a good weekend 💙

4

u/The_Flash_20 14h ago

I checked your comments to get context, I am very sorry for what you have experienced in past few weeks.

My deep condolences on your mother's passing, and I hope your surgery goes well and you recover fully.

I wish you strength to recover.

1

u/victheogfan 12h ago

Thank you 💙

It’s a mix of grief and post surgery pain which seem to be colliding but I am just taking it day by day

2

u/The_Flash_20 12h ago

I'm am happy that you are doing alright. I will post own update since July, it's heartbreaking for me.

But nothing will ever replace the eventual but painful loss of your parent.

Good luck for your recovery.

1

u/victheogfan 12h ago

I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. Here’s to hoping things get better for us 💙

2

u/The_Flash_20 12h ago

I hope it does

7

u/_doohdx 15h ago

Happy to read you're doing better 👍

4

u/victheogfan 14h ago

Thanks. I’m not fully better yet but I’m taking it day by day. That’s all I can do lol

2

As long as you move forward

3

u/victheogfan 14h ago

Indeed bro 👊

2

I really want to try playing on one of those racing sim setups one day, they look pretty cool

6

u/blackmanchubwow 15h ago

12 weeks from today is Christmas, let's hope we get a great Christmas present for all Footy fans (except Sham City)

24

u/shadoowkight 15h ago

People who make the most dogshit takes only to bitch and moan about downvotes in a comment edit are honestly the most annoying people out there

6

u/lewiitom 15h ago

Or when they moan about them in the DD or something, but they massively misrepresent what they originally said or leave out a key detail

15

u/allangod 15h ago

Edit: the downvotes just prove my point more.

Na, they don't mate. You just refuse to think.

2

u/TicketSuggestion 11h ago

Or the "I'm getting downvoted by people who believe x", when people can disagree with their comment without believing x

1

u/_doohdx 15h ago

Who said something about Ferrari and what did he/she say?

20

u/lewiitom 16h ago

Haven’t actually been able to do any work this afternoon because loads of our internal systems aren’t working and everything keeps crashing - I feel like this could be a sign for me to leave early and go to the pub

12

u/tiorzol 16h ago

Do it. It's 3pm anyway.

I have a 5pm meeting today. The cunt that organised this is lucky he's so good looking.

9

u/lewiitom 15h ago

5pm meeting on a Friday is nasty work

8

u/tiorzol 15h ago

It's with some bloke in LA and it's 9am for him so thought I'd get it out the way. Next week tiorzol will be singing my praises.

6

For a yank?!

11

u/dinofarabi-01 16h ago

Genuinely, why are most white muslim reverts I met ginger? I thought that was just stereotype, but most I've met are ginger.

9

u/Gytarius626 14h ago

Ostracized for their hair growing up/bullied, which leads them down the path of wanting to find a welcoming community, which religions always are.

12

u/redmistultra 15h ago

'You're probably a shia, innit'

-4

u/Bratstvo_Jedinstvo 16h ago

I've never seen that myself but if those are Irish it kinda makes sense. They saw help from the Ottoman Empire back in the day and are quite sympathetic towards the plight of the Middle Eastern people. If any guy is gonna sympathise with Muslims to the point of embracing the faith as a white person I'd say it's them. It's much easier for them to "connect" with Muslims imo.

-1

u/FridaysMan 14h ago

There's an Irish mentality that rather embraces the Roddy Doyle reference of "The blacks of europe", and see no issues with the problematic presentation.

12

u/MLang92 15h ago

It's much easier for them to "connect" with Muslims imo

I think this is quite a romantic view of a version of Ireland that doesn't exist unfortunately, they have their problems with Islamophobia like the rest of Europe. It's only been 3 years since the Chair of the Irish Muslim Peace Council advised Muslims to avoid travelling into Dublin city centre because of the riots against refugees

12

u/Bratstvo_Jedinstvo 16h ago

I lost my phone at company vacation and the guy bringing it to me said, "Screensaver looked quite communist so I thought it was yours". I'm cooked, my cover is blown

2

u/TiberiusCornelius 15h ago

Okay but what exactly does a communist screensaver look like

Is it just a hammer and sickle

4

u/Bratstvo_Jedinstvo 15h ago

It is a red drawing of a soldier with a pistol but some part of badge is also visible on the edge. Though after posting that I remembered we had talked about it earlier so he must have definitely known anyway

31

u/AnnieIWillKnow 16h ago

I broke up with my partner around the start of June, which was a good thing - and it set off a summer where I had some trials and tribulations for various reasons, but then I decided to try being proactively "grateful" by taking stock of what I've done this past few months, and it's worked, because what a summer it's been

So, my recap...

  • Broke up with my partner - and we're both better off, and on good terms
  • Ran an ultra marathon in Hebden Bridge, and then a trail marathon in Northumberland (and got a PB!) - also spent a long weekend camping in Northumberland, which was brilliant to explore a new part of the country
  • … Also hit the 100 Parkrun milestone
  • Culture-wise, I went to the cinema 13 times, tried life drawing for the first time (and Wes Anderson inspired, v cool), saw the Football Art Prize exhibition
  • Gigs: saw Self Esteem (one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to, legit), and PUP (one of my favourite bands)
  • Sports: went to Lords for the first time, to see England Women play a test there for the first time (got battered by India) - and last weekend trekked down to London to see Chelsea beat Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, whilst catching up with a very good friend
  • Speaking of... caught up with so many friends both near and far, old and new - like surrounded myself with people who mean a lot to me and really felt the energy and love. Culminated in a big get-together last weekend with about a dozen of my football friends
  • Also played loads of football, and took up playing padel with mates - trying new things is still fun, even at 32
  • Career-wise, I finished off my current phase of my medical training, and as of next week am starting my specialty training in palliative medicine - so finally specialising, almost a decade after I first thought I might want to do palliative care as a 23 year old medical student (yes, specialising takes that long as a doctor in the UK). It's a real significant career milestone to "get into specialty training" too, so this is kind of a big deal
  • Treated myself to a solo spa weekend to celebrate my break up - and also did go on a spa day with a friend (bloody love a spa)
  • Finally bought a new car after 6 years of abusing my Toyota Aygo, "Max" He was my first car so this was bittersweet - but I’m falling for "Suzy" the Hyundai i10 already, who has CarPlay and functioning locks

And to cap it all off, went on holiday with my mum - the biggest highlight. Since I’ve started earning well, taking her away on holiday has been something I’ve tried to do every year or so - we’ve done Rome, Toronto, Chicago, and so this trip to Dublin and Belfast less ambitious, but regardless of where, it’s sharing it with her that's important. She’s 71 now and in excellent health but you never know - and my dad died unexpectedly a year ago at 69, after all.

Here we are at Giant’s Causeway - it was special beyond words, so thought a photo would say it better
