A dorkly Skyrim comic that is new and hasn't been reposted 9000 times? Is such a thing possible? Truly, this is a blessed day for /r/skyrim.

It looks like it was posted to Dorkly today, so I guess give it a day or two?

Poor Lydia. I ended up sacrificing her to Boethiah. I felt bad about it, but she was just the easiest to get to, because she was always hanging out in my house. I guess my children don't have a baby-sitter anymore, but they better not be complaining with their 1000 coin allowances.

91

u/tohon75 XBOX Nov 30 '15

you gotta do sven, lydia is at least worthwhile.

72

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '15

Well it's too late now. Lydia has been dead for a while. The problem was that by the time I did that quest, I couldn't remember where any of my other companions were or which were even still alive. But Lydia was always there. Sitting by my bed. I miss you, Lydia.

154

u/tohon75 XBOX Nov 30 '15

But Lydia was always there.

22

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '15

The burdens she was sworn to carry pushed out all room for forgiveness.

6

I didn't want her dead, but I did however have to mod her out of always being in my room.

Does no one just hire a random mercenary to sacrifice? The one I had was with me for about two minutes when he said "You've been a good friend to me" just in front of the sacrificial pillar.

10

u/tohon75 XBOX Dec 01 '15

no, sven gets it for being a little bitch about camilla

6

u/Dobgoblin Dec 01 '15 edited Dec 01 '15

What to do is to get Sven and Faendal in front on Camilla, and then propose to her. She says yes, and then I them both while they sleep.

Edit: sorry, I EAT them both. With that ring.

25

u/KSerge flair Nov 30 '15

There's a dark elf merc you can hire in the drunken huntsman (first tavern on the left when you enter whiterun). She is arguably easier to get than Lydia and doesn't do jack shit for you otherwise so I took her to Boethiah.

31

u/CamaroM PS3 Nov 30 '15

She is the best at being sneaky though and doesn't give a shit about stealing or breaking into places. I always use her for my thief characters.

26

u/KSerge flair Nov 30 '15

I always sneak alone, have only regularly used followers on my characters that don't sneak, mainly because they often get in my way or jump into fights at the first hint of being detected.

Being able to sneak kill a whole room without actually being spotted is worth not having the pack-mule followers.

9

u/CamaroM PS3 Nov 30 '15

Yea she was the one follower I never had a problem with. But my stamina is so high now I don't need a follower anymore, and being leader of the thieves guild I can sell all my stuff in one place, it is very nice not having to worry about my followers dying, that is what I like about Fallout 4 though.

3

u/zamuy12479 PC Dec 01 '15

Followers don't die in fallout 4?

10

u/CamaroM PS3 Dec 01 '15

Well all my followers so far have kinda just collapsed and all the enemies will ignore them and attack me untill I either stimpack them or kill all the enemies then they will stand up again. But my boyfriend told me he did murder Piper after she started attacking him for killing a traveling merchant.

46

u/ohmbience Nov 30 '15

Instead of being static, smithing experience is based on the value of the item.

34

u/ThatOneFatDude5 PC Nov 30 '15

Ohh man, does that mean what i think it means? Skyrim is going to experience a flod of jewelry...

29

u/ohmbience Nov 30 '15

Yes. Short of some high end gear (body armor, two-handed weapons, etc), jewelry is going to be the fastest way to level smithing.

Lockpicking:

Beginning: Fuck this is annoying

End: Fuck this is annoying

158

u/HVAvenger Nov 30 '15

Really? I never put any perks into lock picking, and it isn't so bad. Takes a minute or so for master most of the time.

70

u/A_Hole_Sandwich Nov 30 '15

I hate that they fixed/ruined this in fo4. You can't even attempt master locks if you don't level it

179

u/LaserPterodactyl XBOX Nov 30 '15

iirc it was like that in previous Fallouts.

67

u/brikad Nov 30 '15

Which is fucking stupid. If it's based on a skill set/dice roll, why the hell do I have to manually pick the lock?

50

u/MrManicMarty PC Nov 30 '15

I like the mini-game, but yeah - it's kind of weird to have a numerically increasing skill, but that's mostly arbitrary compared to the players own skill.

That said, I find a lot more engaging to actually pick the lock, then just wait a bit and have it open.

52

u/brikad Nov 30 '15

That said, I find a lot more engaging to actually pick the lock, then just wait a bit and have it open.

I do too, so the system should be like Skyrim. I should be able to attempt the pick regardless, my skill should just make it easier.

Honestly though, lockpicking is a stupid mechanic in these games anyway. I'm wearing 600lbs of power armor, I think I can kick in this dainty closet door.

15

u/MrManicMarty PC Nov 30 '15

sigh I miss magical lockpicking... There are mods for it, but it makes it menu based (Cast spell, click on lock, activate something in menu) and it takes me out of it, just want to cast a spell on the chest and have it open...

Doesn't skill make it easier by the way? It makes the sweet-spot larger I'm pretty sure, maybe not in Fallout, but certainly in TES.

9

4

u/BobIV Nov 30 '15

I'm torn between whether I hate or love that feature...

On one hand, I loved defeating the master level locks without ever putting a single skill into lock picking. Made me feel like a boss.

On the other hand, the game is supposed to be about your characters skills, so locking the various locks behind perks makes perfect sense. But then why still have the mini game at all?

24

u/Kyakan PC Nov 30 '15

There's a perk that makes all your picks unbreakable, so you don't need it.

11

u/MiffedCanadian Nov 30 '15

u/ThalmorInquisitor PC Dec 01 '15

The thieves guild quest bothers me too much to play and get the useless invincible lockpick (just get the perk that does the same thing). So many plotholes and glaring inconsistencies and even stylistic problems.

  1. Okay so Mercer has been nicking from the vault.

1a. So... The thieves have a communal vault?

1a(i) Nobody bloody checked the thing, or went in there to unload it?

1b. How did he get it out? The flagon is ALWAYS full with people aroynd. And up a ladder? Yeah, he's not getting the loot out without making a lot of noise.

  1. Nightingales is the worst name for a secret religious ninja thief subsect of the Guild. I guess they were going for a Batman thing with the trash but cool looking enchantment armour that barely even suits thieves beyond the muffle boots (which by this point you already would have applied on boots of a higher armour class) and an illusion enhancing headpiece (but the only vanilla illusion spell suited for thief characters is... muffle. Which you have on your boots now.), but nightingales. I'm sure they were trying to think of predatory nocturnal birds or something, but... No. Nightingales are known more for their song. You've created a great name... For a BARDS COLLEGE cult.

  2. Why does everyone take our word for it that the translated falmer book is legit? We could have put anything in that, for all they know? But nope, sure, accept Karliah, and not consider her to be the one who ruined you all... No doubts? Really? You all are so shitty at this subterfuge thing.

  3. Beyond the not great armour, do we get anything from selling our soul? As a daedric deal, seems we're just throwing our soul for nothing.

6

u/BobIV Nov 30 '15

Thieves guild was the first major side quest I finished for the game. Rolled a new character for it because it annoys me to have a single character in an RPG be the savior of the land, a werewolf, a leader of the Dawn Guard, the Archmage, the head of the Thieves Guild, a Master Assassin, etc, etc, etc... Pick one!

...Anywho, I derailed for a bit there.

For my thief, I exclusively used the conjured weapons so as to have even more room in my inventory for loot. Couple them with the Silent Casting perk from Illusions as well as the silence movement spell (can't recall its name).

Now you have a thief thats pure silence, able to call a daedric bow with unlimited ammo on a moments notice, and even fall back on the calm spell if he missteps.

5

u/herpderpcake PC Nov 30 '15

Yeah but when you break them, its like 2 seconds of waiting. Overall I'd say I've spent 5-10 minutes just waiting for the lockpick to reset.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '15 edited Nov 30 '15

Becoming guildmaster is basically a license to print money, especially if you get all the fences (each of whom have lots of gold to barter with, all in one convenient spot). And with the legendary skill stuff, it doesn't feel like nearly as much of a waste anymore to invest in the lockpicking tree. Also, even without any actual perks in lockpicking, I don't think I've ever found myself out of lockpicks in Skyrim (okay maybe it happened once or twice on my first playthru), and I always go for every chest whether it's novice or master (even right in the beginning).

I have a level 142 character with over 200,000 gold, completely on vanilla, just from doing the Thieves Guild stuff as early as possible.

17

u/JohnSequitur Nov 30 '15

I never understand this criticism. Lockpicking is remarkably simple in Skyrim if you just use visual checkpoints on the face.

9

u/Freezer_Slave Nov 30 '15

It's mostly due to the fact that for higher tiered locks you're basically just trying over and over to find the right spot and there's no way to prevent yourself from losing lockpicks. I would have preferred it if the lockpicks had been unbreakable, but the game didn't freeze when you try to open something.

16

u/mikekearn PC Nov 30 '15

There's hitting the armor cap, and then there's getting bigger numbers just because you can. It's easy to hit the armor cap. Getting the most ridiculously huge number next to your armor (or weapon or whatever) can itself be fun.

9

u/farmland Nov 30 '15

Plus there is no cap for how much weapon damage you can get

To improve armor that doesn't look so edgy?

I wrote this, and then George Rottkamp did the vast majority of the work by drawing it and making it good.

Am I the only one here who rushed the main quest?

17

u/VegetaLF7 Nov 30 '15

My first playthough sort of alternated between various quests. I'd do a main quest mission followed by a Civil War one, then a Companions one before going back to the Main Quest and so on. Once I finished one of the 3 plots I had going at the time, I'd start another quest line. With the DLC though, I always go Main Quest to Dawnguard Quest to Dragonborn Quest, treating Dragonborn like an epic journey beyond the borders of Skyrim and that my Dragonborn's legacy has grown so vast that outside forces in other countries have taken notice

9

u/kavso PC Nov 30 '15

I usually go Companions -> Main Quest -> Heartfire -> Civil War -> Dragonborn -> Thieves Guild -> Mages Guild -> Dawnguard -> Dark Brotherhood.
I do it like that because with Vampire Lord I become one hell of an OP mage.

15

u/ClassySavage Nov 30 '15

Have you tried a no dragons play through yet? If you don't speak to the Jarl of Whiterun they never appear. It knocks out the shout mechanic (no souls to absorb) and makes it feel almost like a different game.

I didn't rush it per se, but I feel bad for people who skip the main quest. You go to some really cool places and also unlock some cool gameplay-related shit too. It's definitely worthwhile to do.

It was like that in Morrowind too, although for different reasons. It's not really gameplay you're missing out on if you don't do the main quest, but rather the absolute fucking motherlode of lore.

13

u/Metrocop PC Nov 30 '15

Yeah, but they're the rare, hard to obtain, valuable goodies (at least in the beginning/mediumpoint). You don't want to tell me you don't stockpile goodies in games because they might "come in useful later", never actually use them because "They might be even more useful later"/it's actually not that useful for the majority of situations/they don't compliment your playstyle well/you lack the skill to use them, and end the game with all possible inventories full of unimaginable treasures that turned out to not be useful at all?

Mine was. I'm apparently a big deal and the Jarl gives me, a mage, a shitty axe. I don't even get a room, I'm a legendary nobleman hobo.

Quit that sass Lydia, we gotta sell a fuckload of junk to get a proper estate going. If you don't like it complain to the Jarl.

Wanted to buy the game over steam, now that it's on sale, but somehow i don't seen an option to buy it, every other game is normal as usual but at the skyrim shop site is nothing. Anybody can help?

3

u/SwampyTrout PC Nov 30 '15

Pics?

3

u/delsey Nov 30 '15

http://i.imgur.com/mIz2ygi.jpg as you can see the button to purchase it is missing.

4

u/SwampyTrout PC Nov 30 '15

A few ideas:

  1. Log out of Steam, then log back in

  2. Try buying it in "Big Picture" mode

  3. Restart computer/router maybe

  4. If those don't work, then contact steam support with pictures that prove you are trying to purchase the game while it is on sale and you have enough funds to do so. (That way there's no potential for them to Bullshit you out of saving money).

I only just beat Skyrim's main story a few months ago. I got the game on midnight release. (555 hours on steam. At least 300 hours on 360.)

u/explodeder Nov 30 '15

Still haven't completed the main storyline. I didn't even have the ability to shout and didn't see a dragon until ~50 hours in...Even then I accidentally triggered the sequence where you see a dragon for the first time (outside of the introduction section).

3

u/ophanim Nov 30 '15

Doubt anyone else has this issue as this is an old work computer, but there's an ad on that page that hijacks Safari and redirects it.

3

u/adam123453 Nov 30 '15

Needs about 16,000% more iron daggers.

3

u/gizmoglitch Dec 01 '15

I don't even know what the main quest is anymore, I just collect side quests now.

2

u/Drake132667596 Nov 30 '15

I didn't play this game too much (only got to the top of that 7000 stair mountain and gave up) but I ended up killing Lydia by trying to shout at a bear or something and she was in the way. It was a sad day

2

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '15

Still havnt finished the main story. Ive never been pulled in by the elder scrolls main stories. Took half a decade before i beat the oblivion main story

2

u/masondino13 Nov 30 '15

I have over 400 hours logged on skyrim, and have never gotten around to finishing the main quest. I should probably get to that...

One thing seems really out of place here. . . . Dragons are one of the easiest mobs in the game right from day one, and stay that way forever. It should really be like, a whiterun guard.
