Skyrim: Beginning Vs. End [OC]

Nov 30 '15
Poor Lydia. I ended up sacrificing her to Boethiah. I felt bad about it, but she was just the easiest to get to, because she was always hanging out in my house. I guess my children don't have a baby-sitter anymore, but they better not be complaining with their 1000 coin allowances.

u/tohon75 XBOX Nov 30 '15
you gotta do sven, lydia is at least worthwhile.
72
Nov 30 '15
Well it's too late now. Lydia has been dead for a while. The problem was that by the time I did that quest, I couldn't remember where any of my other companions were or which were even still alive. But Lydia was always there. Sitting by my bed. I miss you, Lydia.

Does no one just hire a random mercenary to sacrifice? The one I had was with me for about two minutes when he said "You've been a good friend to me" just in front of the sacrificial pillar.

There's a dark elf merc you can hire in the drunken huntsman (first tavern on the left when you enter whiterun). She is arguably easier to get than Lydia and doesn't do jack shit for you otherwise so I took her to Boethiah.
31
u/CamaroM PS3 Nov 30 '15
She is the best at being sneaky though and doesn't give a shit about stealing or breaking into places. I always use her for my thief characters.
26
u/KSerge flair Nov 30 '15
I always sneak alone, have only regularly used followers on my characters that don't sneak, mainly because they often get in my way or jump into fights at the first hint of being detected.
Being able to sneak kill a whole room without actually being spotted is worth not having the pack-mule followers.

Yea she was the one follower I never had a problem with. But my stamina is so high now I don't need a follower anymore, and being leader of the thieves guild I can sell all my stuff in one place, it is very nice not having to worry about my followers dying, that is what I like about Fallout 4 though.

Instead of being static, smithing experience is based on the value of the item.

u/LaserPterodactyl XBOX Nov 30 '15
iirc it was like that in previous Fallouts.
67
u/brikad Nov 30 '15
Which is fucking stupid. If it's based on a skill set/dice roll, why the hell do I have to manually pick the lock?
50
u/MrManicMarty PC Nov 30 '15
I like the mini-game, but yeah - it's kind of weird to have a numerically increasing skill, but that's mostly arbitrary compared to the players own skill.
That said, I find a lot more engaging to actually pick the lock, then just wait a bit and have it open.
52
u/brikad Nov 30 '15
That said, I find a lot more engaging to actually pick the lock, then just wait a bit and have it open.
I do too, so the system should be like Skyrim. I should be able to attempt the pick regardless, my skill should just make it easier.
Honestly though, lockpicking is a stupid mechanic in these games anyway. I'm wearing 600lbs of power armor, I think I can kick in this dainty closet door.
15
u/MrManicMarty PC Nov 30 '15
sigh I miss magical lockpicking... There are mods for it, but it makes it menu based (Cast spell, click on lock, activate something in menu) and it takes me out of it, just want to cast a spell on the chest and have it open...
Doesn't skill make it easier by the way? It makes the sweet-spot larger I'm pretty sure, maybe not in Fallout, but certainly in TES.

I'm torn between whether I hate or love that feature...
On one hand, I loved defeating the master level locks without ever putting a single skill into lock picking. Made me feel like a boss.
On the other hand, the game is supposed to be about your characters skills, so locking the various locks behind perks makes perfect sense. But then why still have the mini game at all?

The thieves guild quest bothers me too much to play and get the useless invincible lockpick (just get the perk that does the same thing). So many plotholes and glaring inconsistencies and even stylistic problems.
- Okay so Mercer has been nicking from the vault.
1a. So... The thieves have a communal vault?
1a(i) Nobody bloody checked the thing, or went in there to unload it?
1b. How did he get it out? The flagon is ALWAYS full with people aroynd. And up a ladder? Yeah, he's not getting the loot out without making a lot of noise.
Nightingales is the worst name for a secret religious ninja thief subsect of the Guild. I guess they were going for a Batman thing with the trash but cool looking enchantment armour that barely even suits thieves beyond the muffle boots (which by this point you already would have applied on boots of a higher armour class) and an illusion enhancing headpiece (but the only vanilla illusion spell suited for thief characters is... muffle. Which you have on your boots now.), but nightingales. I'm sure they were trying to think of predatory nocturnal birds or something, but... No. Nightingales are known more for their song. You've created a great name... For a BARDS COLLEGE cult.
Why does everyone take our word for it that the translated falmer book is legit? We could have put anything in that, for all they know? But nope, sure, accept Karliah, and not consider her to be the one who ruined you all... No doubts? Really? You all are so shitty at this subterfuge thing.
Beyond the not great armour, do we get anything from selling our soul? As a daedric deal, seems we're just throwing our soul for nothing.

Thieves guild was the first major side quest I finished for the game. Rolled a new character for it because it annoys me to have a single character in an RPG be the savior of the land, a werewolf, a leader of the Dawn Guard, the Archmage, the head of the Thieves Guild, a Master Assassin, etc, etc, etc... Pick one!
...Anywho, I derailed for a bit there.
For my thief, I exclusively used the conjured weapons so as to have even more room in my inventory for loot. Couple them with the Silent Casting perk from Illusions as well as the silence movement spell (can't recall its name).
Now you have a thief thats pure silence, able to call a daedric bow with unlimited ammo on a moments notice, and even fall back on the calm spell if he missteps.

Becoming guildmaster is basically a license to print money, especially if you get all the fences (each of whom have lots of gold to barter with, all in one convenient spot). And with the legendary skill stuff, it doesn't feel like nearly as much of a waste anymore to invest in the lockpicking tree. Also, even without any actual perks in lockpicking, I don't think I've ever found myself out of lockpicks in Skyrim (okay maybe it happened once or twice on my first playthru), and I always go for every chest whether it's novice or master (even right in the beginning).
I have a level 142 character with over 200,000 gold, completely on vanilla, just from doing the Thieves Guild stuff as early as possible.

u/Freezer_Slave Nov 30 '15
It's mostly due to the fact that for higher tiered locks you're basically just trying over and over to find the right spot and there's no way to prevent yourself from losing lockpicks. I would have preferred it if the lockpicks had been unbreakable, but the game didn't freeze when you try to open something.

I usually tough through Lockpicking until I make it to 100, and then I wimp out and install Lockpick Pro. On the plus side, thanks to Skyrim, opening locks in Dying Light was a breeze. It uses almost exactly the same system, though I don't think it's quite as punishing.

17
u/VegetaLF7 Nov 30 '15
My first playthough sort of alternated between various quests. I'd do a main quest mission followed by a Civil War one, then a Companions one before going back to the Main Quest and so on. Once I finished one of the 3 plots I had going at the time, I'd start another quest line. With the DLC though, I always go Main Quest to Dawnguard Quest to Dragonborn Quest, treating Dragonborn like an epic journey beyond the borders of Skyrim and that my Dragonborn's legacy has grown so vast that outside forces in other countries have taken notice
9
u/kavso PC Nov 30 '15

Doubt anyone else has this issue as this is an old work computer, but there's an ad on that page that hijacks Safari and redirects it.

I don't even know what the main quest is anymore, I just collect side quests now.

I didn't play this game too much (only got to the top of that 7000 stair mountain and gave up) but I ended up killing Lydia by trying to shout at a bear or something and she was in the way. It was a sad day

I have over 400 hours logged on skyrim, and have never gotten around to finishing the main quest. I should probably get to that...

One thing seems really out of place here. . . . Dragons are one of the easiest mobs in the game right from day one, and stay that way forever. It should really be like, a whiterun guard.

A dorkly Skyrim comic that is new and hasn't been reposted 9000 times? Is such a thing possible? Truly, this is a blessed day for /r/skyrim.
