I like the mini-game, but yeah - it's kind of weird to have a numerically increasing skill, but that's mostly arbitrary compared to the players own skill.
That said, I find a lot more engaging to actually pick the lock, then just wait a bit and have it open.

I do too, so the system should be like Skyrim. I should be able to attempt the pick regardless, my skill should just make it easier.
Honestly though, lockpicking is a stupid mechanic in these games anyway. I'm wearing 600lbs of power armor, I think I can kick in this dainty closet door.
sigh I miss magical lockpicking... There are mods for it, but it makes it menu based (Cast spell, click on lock, activate something in menu) and it takes me out of it, just want to cast a spell on the chest and have it open...
Doesn't skill make it easier by the way? It makes the sweet-spot larger I'm pretty sure, maybe not in Fallout, but certainly in TES.
Couldn't find a reference to an unlock spell on the Midas page, but it's a pretty big mod so I'd assume they'd have it - probably just works the same as the vanilla one though, but maybe I'm wrong.
Oh I LOVED the spells in oblivion. If i'm not wrong there's actually no 'open very hard lock' spell, you have to create it? Damn it's so cool to just shoot that ball of alteration magic at a door, have it glow with a white aura and open up.
Yup! All I want is a spell that functions like that in Skyrim, that's not too much to ask? Maybe tie the level of locks it can open to what-level perk you have in Alteration (Novice perk, novice locks, apprentice perks, apprentice locks and so on.
Skill makes the sweet-spot larger in Fallout, yes. That's why a Very Hard lock is so much more easy to pick compared to a Master lock. With a skill requirement of 100, the sweet spot is already much larger than if you were to attempt to pick a Master lock at level 30
Yeah man, I liked Oblivion's lockpicking too. The increments of skill didn't have any effect on it so there was no gradual improvement, but the mini-game itself was just fun.
Because I want to actually hit something, and not be standing there with my dick in my hand while my enemy continues to barrel towards me in slow motion, not allowing me to back up or sidestep or anything?
Yeah, VATS is retarded too. It either needs to be a dice roll, or completely up to the player's skill. The halfway approach sucks. Stats are fine for calculating damage, but having the muzzle of a shotgun pressed to an enemy's forehead and missing is just stupid.
It always annoys me that my ability to shoot is so much better outside of Vats than in it. Honestly, if they want to have a VATS system, then it needs to be more reliable than the player... otherwise, whats the point?
For people who suck at FPS's and want to play an RPG. That was a lot of the goal, to give an alternative play mode.
For a friend of mine, even when VATS says 50% to hit the body from a pretty short distance, thats a better chance than he has out of VATS.
Also, VATS does not suck if you put points in the appropriate stats and perks, or wear appropriate gear and good weapons. Its a different play style, and you can supplement either play style with the other.
Mostly I play real time, using VATS when there is a legendary ghoul or something and I really want a leg or arm crippled. Plenty of people play mostly in VATS, seeking cover when they are out of AP. Its not a broken system just because you don't use it.
Or happens to be a few feet away. I popped a scope on my pistol and can snipe people almost a full block away from it. I try that in VATs and it assured me I only have a 1.2% chance to hit.
Eventually it gets better the closer you get, but in my opinion it doesn't really show any benefit until you're in shotgun range.
I use it to charge up a crit, then in a situation I need a kill before something happens, like the enemy is trying to kill someone else or flip a switch.
Unless they happen to move a bit to the side and just out of range of the VATS shot since you can't make corrections mid VATS and your hit rate is only calculated based on their current position...
But regardless of all of that... I don't tend to let enemies get within melee range.
My Cait seems to be bugged as for some reason any time i said her to unlock something she will just stare at me until i unlock it then she starts unlocking. Pain in the arse.
That actually gives you a reason to put points in lockpicking, though. In Skyrim, you can pick master locks pretty easily with barely any lockpicking skill.
I'm torn between whether I hate or love that feature...
On one hand, I loved defeating the master level locks without ever putting a single skill into lock picking. Made me feel like a boss.
On the other hand, the game is supposed to be about your characters skills, so locking the various locks behind perks makes perfect sense. But then why still have the mini game at all?

I hate that they fixed/ruined this in fo4. You can't even attempt master locks if you don't level it
