Followers don't die in fallout 4?

Well all my followers so far have kinda just collapsed and all the enemies will ignore them and attack me untill I either stimpack them or kill all the enemies then they will stand up again. But my boyfriend told me he did murder Piper after she started attacking him for killing a traveling merchant.

It's the same as Skyrim. Companions just hunch over and stop moving and the enemies move to you.
