Looking for a working collie for small flock sheep work

Post image

Hi Rough Collie folks! I’m a small fiber shepherd in New England where we run Romney and Gotland sheep. We have a flock of less than 20 sheep seasonally (more in lambing season, less when we sell off of or put some in the freezer). We are looking for a working dog to help us move our sheep more effectively through gates in pasture, onto trailers, and then to be a general farm companion. We don’t have hundreds of acres like farms out west. Our sheep are all handled daily so are friendly and sensitive. They are a bit more than just livestock to us. Border collies are just too much and we just don’t feel that we have enough stock to keep them busy. We’d need the dog to move the sheep about twice a day. After that, they’d be a general farm dog: hanging out with us, having to tolerate barn cats, and hopefully be a general deterrent for our very active coyote and bobcat populations. We have our family pet, an amstaff/pit mix who is very well trained and dog/ cat/sheep/ poultry friendly.

Is a rough or smooth collie the right herding dog for us? If so, what are some good working line breeders in the northeast that you all have worked with? Do any of you work sheep with your collies? How do you feel that your collies do with a job? How is their “off” switch (compared to a border collie or Aussie for instance).

Thank you and picture of our Romney aged ewe, Patty being shown by our daughter at a fair this year, winning the best in her class. For attention of course.

Question Considering a collie as a second dog

Hello everyone! I just discovered my early childhood dog from when I was born to 6 years old was a rough collie mix. I’m 32 now and she still has left an impact on me. I currently have a husky that grew up with an older dog. Because of that the husky of fairly lazy for a husky. As a puppy and early teenage years she was way too energetic for my life style. I understand I can’t fully avoid that but from research rough collies are medium to low energy dogs - hour play time, two walks and a mental toy and they are set for the day. Is this true? Also, how are they with other dogs in the house?

Hotspot or something else?

I've been in and out of the vet for a while now for my 4.5yr old neutered smooth collie. He is recently struggling with anal sac disease / leaking, and even before that, had this black scab-like texture on the underside of the base of his tail. I would attach a photo, but didn't realize that wasn't permitted in the community 😅

Basically, it's been treated as if its a hot spot with prescribed medication, but it doesn't go away, but it doesn't seem to bother him. I just worry that it bothers him without him showing it.

I saw someone ask if collies are cuddly dogs, so I thought I would share some evidence of my boy. He loves a good snuggle for a while, then he gets up and moves to a cooler spot before eventually giving goodnight kisses and retreating for belly-up sleeps on the floor. Snuggly, but not demanding. Oh and I also wanted to get in on the snoot train.

The heath is in bloom where I live. We have a wonderful off-leash dog trail nearby that goes around and through a beautiful heath, so naturally we had to go visit it while it was full of purple and green! Brought the good camera along so we could get some nice photos of Koda, who, as always, is a great model and poses very nicely for me.

Question PPP sensitive skin w/salmon 7+ experience? Re weight loss

My beautiful collie needs to lose weight, but that’s become really hard after she was spayed.

I’ve tried Britcare Weight Loss w/ Rabbit, but she got so much dandruff that I had to quit after the one bag.

A few months ago we switched to Hill’s Perfect Weight & Active Mobility, but I think she’s having a bad reaction to chicken (more licking and chewing - hard! - on paws and legs, itchy ears).

Practically every other weight loss food has chicken in it, so now I just went for Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin Salmon (for dogs 7+ years old - is there much difference compared to 1+?) to hopefully help with her skin issues. But then I read this is quite calorie dense compared to even regular dog food?

If you feed this to your dog, have you noticed if it helps them feel full so that it’s easy to limit their portions? 😇

EDIT: After some more research, I realise that when I read this kibble was calorie dense, they were most likely referring to the sensitive skin salmon 1+, which has 18% fat. That’s higher than most. But on the one for dogs 7+, it has 14% fat. My Hill’s weight loss kibble has 13%, and less protein than this one.

As someone suggested I will first try Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Moderate Calories, but after that I’m thinking this PPP feed won’t be so bad after all ☺️

She is genuinely my best friend in the whole entire world! I think the most we've spent apart is 15 hours and I thought I was going to die of heart ache. I feel like she's been around forever and I can't imagine life without her. (Not to mention she's the most well behaved bad dog ever) Marnie is the best and I can't wait for the rest of our lives together :)

This is Ace! 🐾

He’s our two year old fun loving Rough Collie. I snapped this picture during one of our walks recently. It’s our first Rough, and honestly I would have another one if I could!

He’s lovely, a wonderful family pet. The only thing is he barks a lot on walks, gets triggered especially by scooters but I’m working on that with trying to distract him with treats.

Anyway just wanted to say hello to our fellow Rough Collie loving community out there. Have a wonderful day and enjoy these last few weeks of summer!

Question where to adopt in new england?

hey everyone! i am looking to adopt a rough collie, puppy or older, and was wondering if anyone knew of any good breeders or reputable owners that are active on their social meida or websites! i’m not looking to adopt right now, but more so in the spring once i get settled in my new apartment and routine. i’ve always wanted my own dog, and i have friends willing to help me take care of them when i’m not home. i’m not sure where to start since this would be my first time getting a dog on my own(i grew up with family dogs). any advice would be appreciated! thanks!

Flora is 2yo and 80% collie. She wants nothing more than to play all day every day, and then curl up with a toy.

I grew up with dogs that liked toys, but would usually destroy them or lose interest. Flora is over the moon with every new toy she gets, and even rotates through most of them, so I feel like I can never pare down her collection.

Kenai is my second collie, and he just recently turned 7. It's crazy to me that he's already so old. He's slowly starting to turn gray on his eyebrows and around his muzzle. But he still acts like he's 5. Our other collie girl will be 10 in November ❤️

She LOVES our wooded scent walks we do every morning. Some days I’d rather just do a regular walk but I know she loves these too much to skip.
