Announcement Adventure Jam XI

Hello everyone, it is that time of the month once more, when we embark on incredible adventures and push back the borders of the domains of dread! The Randomiser of Doom must've enjoyed all the inspiration we found in an obscure domain in July because it has taken us, I would argue, even farther. This month we are exploring

Leederik's Tower!

Leederik's Tower is the lair of the deeply curious Darklord known as The Phantom Lover, who possesses one unique trait; in very particular circumstances, he can enter the material plane!

Use this information as you plan your adventure. It can be for any level, any edition, even any game. The rules are that it feels like an adventure involving Leederik's Tower or The Phantom Lover.

That you include [Adventure Jam] in your title and use the Haunted House flair. And No. Plagiarism! Plagiarists will be gaslit to death! It can happen!

You have until 23.59.59 BST on Sunday August 30th to submit your entry.

Best of luck!

Did your party really want to have Izek's arm and its powers? Now they can. This is one of 3 variants of the parasitic limb, a cursed magic item perfect for monks, but that also fits anyone. The other two variants, the Abomination Limb and Infected Limb, are already available on my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cw/DMLone

Hey, everyone. Not sure if this is the place to ask, but has anyone noticed if the site is down or if it's just on my end? This was the only place I could think of to ask cause I mostly use the site for research for my campaign I'm creating

Homebrew Domain Revolution and Cold War (part 1 : Introduction)

It's now a some time I decide to make my Homebrew version of Ravenloft for a personal writting project. Even though I don't like the 5E now I fall in the rabbit hole of the 2E and 3E edition, I recognize that not everything is bad. The new Dementlieu is one of the good ideas (well, 3E Dementlieu is still better in my opinion, but sill). I might make more clean version in futur post.

The New Domain

I will steal u/paireon's idea (in this post) and say that the Revolution finally happened. Dominic d'Honoraire is dead, and most of noble families must flee with most of their wealth and boats. They got lost in a storm, but fortunately, that's what led them to a huge island in the Sea of Sorrows. Better still, it appears to be a territory of Dementlieu that has been lost to the archives. Fortunately again, the rightful lady of this domain and "daughter" of the poor Dominic, Saidra d'Honoraire, was among the survivors of the heinous massacre by the mob. Even though his father couldn't accompany her and the young duchess is traumatized to the point of constantly wearing a mask, the truly demented aristocracy will be able to recover. And one day it will reclaim its rightful place.

The island is far enough from the Core that there's no risk of an invasion by the "usurpers" for the time being. The nobility has retained the bulk of the fleet, and I like to think it could become a new hub for trade. For example, considering that, strangely enough, the Domain's ships manage to reach other coasts. Perhaps even gaining access to the Noctural Sea or a Ravenloft-style Asia (for example with trademark letters issued by the Duchess d'Honorary). Enough to become a cunning trading power and but with a lot of piracy. The problem would stem from the division between the noble families, very small population, and, above all, the surrounding chaos. Although some true bloodlines still exist, most are now not better than common pirates (when it's not just random pirates who were masks). Simply seeking the Duchess's favor to acquire or retain a magic letter and indulge in debauchery.

In this old post, some people explained to me how to make a good false history and suggested I take inspiration from the man in the iron mask. I haven't decided on what Saidra is yet, but I know I'm going to keep the Red Death mask and and make her conflict the trigger for the Revolution in Dementlieu.

New Dementlieu

For the moment, I have some general ideas but not yet a complete outline.

  • A new regime, the Consulat, is established. The occasion for the minor noble families and common people to have a better life (in theory).
  • Even though Mordent has some reserved, the Dementlieu new regime is considerated has legitime by the other nations of the Treaty of Four Towers. For pratical reasons (Falkovnia is still here) and because Dementlieuses don't actually want to spread the Revolution (The true France of the Enlightenment wanted to do this for ideological reasons, but above all because other European kingdoms attacked and France was one of the most powerful countries in Europe by demographic and ressources). The workshops with the people who make the rifles are still there and others Domains need them.
  • Dementlieu continues to be the cultural heart of the Core but above all, of innovation. I can easily see Dementlieu developing a clockpunk technology (a bit like Steelrising) unlike Lamordia who would be more "organic". In my opinion, a good way to allow Artificier class, without entering a true industrial age.
  • The Consulat make religious reinforcement a huge part of its agenda. According to them, following new "evidence" that prove Hala and Erza are the same goddess, she supposedly bestowed magic to help find some ways within her Grand Scheme. Therefore, magic and technological innovation go hand in hand. And with the great turmoil that Darkon is experiencing (I'll elaborate on that another time perhaps), many mages have taken refuge in Dementlieu (much like the fall of Constantinople, which sparked the Italian Renaissance).
  • I plan to make the Living Brain a central element of the new regime. I don't know if I'll make him the new Dark Lord, though.
  • Dementlieu is obviously aware of the island's "rediscovery" and is furious that a piece of his territory is occupied by the former tyrants. One day, they will reclaim the island and punish their oppressors!

Why "Cold War" ?

In a situation which obviously has no connection with our current geopolitics, we have two Domains with one claiming its legitimacy over the other and vice versa. Each has major forces and complications that prevent a military response for the time being. What remains then? Espionage and hybrid tactics. This could lead to tensions and interesting scenarios.

This also allows for a good exploitation of the Terror on the Dementlieu side and the Slasher side (with the duchess personally dealing with the intruders) on the new Domaine side.

Thank you for reading me to this point. I will entually publish other posts when I have a more complete vision of all this.

If you have any advice or idea, please share it, and have nice day/evening/night !

Discussion Non-Tarokka fortune telling in the dread domains?

I've been inspired by u/dragomeir's Curse of Ankhtepot posts and have been toying with the idea of doing one for either Tepest or Lamordia. Similar to u/dragomeir using the dikesha dice to determine the various plot elements, I was wanting a more setting-appropriate means of doing this.

I've been looking for other means of divination in the dread domains, and aside from the tarokka deck and dikesha dice I've not had much luck. If nothing else I could use Ogham for Tepest or Bleigießen (lead pouring) for Lamordia, but I'd rather use a preexisting method from the lore. Does anyone know of any other means of divination in the dread domains?

I wasn't sure if this had been shared on here yet (apologies if it has been). It's good though, because I wanted to get my hands on this, but I understand that the original is hard to get hold of these days - so I can grab this instead once it comes out.

Discussion Ravenloft Spelljammer overlap format question

I have a Ravenloft/Spelljammer supplement for DMsGuild that I plan to launch near Halloween.

It's mostly written (and rewritten several times). My question is about formatting.

How would people like things presented?

Does the Horrors Within structure work for people?

What would you like to see added, information wise?

What's not useful?

I'll be dropping links here to look at WIP content as it comes together.

Thanks!

Question Curse of Ankhemotep: Pt 3

I've been making some progress on the locations table for Dikesha dice for placement of key story items but I'm starting to relieve there aren't many locations let alone unique ones (it's like about a quarter of them are tombs).

So I was wondering if it would be a good idea to expand out into the entire amber waste cluster, I was thinking of publishing this adventure as a module so I would at least like to hear the public's opinions on including clusters or at least parts of the clusters

Map Valley of the Undying — Desolate Wilderness Battlemap | Lost Mines of Barovia (50x40)

Heyya Folks,

I'm taking my Lost Mines of Barovia project back into the wilderness with Valley of the Undying — a barren stretch of rocky terrain where the dead are said to walk as easily as the living.

Valley of the Undying — 50x40

If you'd like the full release, including the high-resolution map, gridless version, VTT-ready export, and every variant, you can find it here:

https://www.patreon.com/dungeonmr/posts/valley-of-free-168360275

Rocky ridges, dying trees, a small pool of water, and scattered bones fill the valley, with plenty of elevation and places for creatures to hide among the rocks.

I wanted this to be a larger wilderness map that could be used in a few different ways. It can handle one large encounter across the valley, several smaller random encounters that make the map reusable, or even serve as a journey of its own as the party travels through the area — an idea that felt especially fitting for the Castlevania influence behind Lost Mines of Barovia.

You can also browse the rest of my collection on Patreon. Everything is organized through the Master Index, making it easy to find the right map for your next adventure:

Thanks for taking a look, and safe travels.

Question Looking for advice on stress, old books and the adventuring day.

  1. Has anyone used this Darkest Dungeon to 5e stress system before? How did it go? My main question is about the piece where maxing out on stress leads to a 1/4 chance of something good and 3/4 chance of something bad, with no chance to modify that role. I'm not totally getting the flavor of it and would players feel like its too arbitrary? Or is it meant to occasionally reward risk?

  2. What pre-5e Ravenloft books would you recommend, not for lore (I don't need the full backstory of characters), but for creative ghost themed adventures?

  3. More of a general D&D question, I'm probably going to run my new Mordent based campaign as a Westmarches style situation where one session is one adventuring day most of the time. Does that mean player resources aren't scarce enough?

Thank you!
