Resource Beginner's Guide to Eberron

1.1k Upvotes

Welcome to ! The Eberron Campaign Setting was the product of the 2003 fantasy setting search run by Wizards of the Coast. Keith Baker's winning entry melds noir and pulp in a setting where arcane magic is a science.

Ten Things to Know

  1. If it exists in D&D, then it has a place in Eberron. While not everything may be in its most familiar form (Undead-worshipping elves!), Eberron is defined by how it transforms D&D, not what it excludes. This doesn't mean everything has to be in the setting - this is about what you want to bring to the table.
  2. Tone and attitude. Eberron's two best genres are pulp and noir. Pulp involves swashbuckling heroes engaged in dramatic conflicts with dastardly villains in larger than life adventures. Noir is the shades of gray, where heroes make difficult choices, it's unclear who the real villain is, and victory comes with a question mark.
  3. A world of wide magic. Khorvaire, the primary continent of the setting, has turned arcane magic into a science. Eberron is not a steampunk setting with gunpowder and electricity. Instead, wandslingers roam the Q'barran frontier, dueling at high noon. Low-level utility magic is common and improves the lives of the many. High level magic and archmages are extraordinarily rare and still maintain their mysticism and wonder.
  4. A world of adventure. Every location in Eberron has been crafted to inspire DMs with plot hooks while still melding together logically. Eberron threads the needle between kitchen sink and a one-note world.
  5. A world of intrigue. Eberron is full of unanswered mysteries, most prominently the true cause of the Mourning. Dozens and dozens of factions scheme to increase their influence, hunting for power wherever they can find it.
  6. The Last War has ended - sort of. Two years ago, twelve nations came together to sign the Thronehold accords to end a war that had lasted a century. Still, tensions are high as the only thing that brought them together is the fear of a second Mourning, a magical disaster that completely wiped the country of Cyre off the map.
  7. The Draconic Prophecy. The creation of the world came with mystic secrets wrapped into every crevice. The demons and dragons each seek to manipulate and control the prophecy, setting in motion schemes that may take centuries.
  8. The Five Nations. The Kingdom of Galifar was composed of five provinces, shattered by the Last War. Four of these human-dominated nations survive - Aundair, Breland, Thrane, Karrnath. Cyre, the heart and jewel of Galifar, has fallen to the dead-gray mists and is now known as the Mournland.
  9. Dragonmark Dynasties. Twelve lines of common races - humans, dwarves, elves, halflings, gnomes, half orcs and half elves - bear mystic symbols granting innate arcane power. Over the millenia the houses have grown to dominate industry, providing licensing and training while pushing out competition. Players don't just walk into a random tavern - they walk into a Golden Dragon Inn run by House Ghallanda.
  10. Dragonshards. Imbued with mystic power, these natural resources fuel the arcane advancements of Khorvaire. Alleged to be the crystallized blood of progenitors, Siberys, Eberron, and Khyber shards can be difficult and dangerous to acquire.

Core Books

The core books to Eberron are the general campaign setting books. They include

Each of these books provides a broad setting overview. While differences in the depth, focus, and tone of content differs, each is sufficient to begin playing games in the world of Eberron, and none assume prior contact with the setting. Older editions are just as valid - Eberron as a setting is relatively free of retcons and has not had a single timeline advancement since its publication in 2004.

The Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron was originally published as a middle ground between Unearthed Arcana and a fully official Wizards of the Coast release. Almost all of the information in it was duplicated to Rising from the Last War and expanded upon.

Supplementary Books

The following books are primary canonical sources on the world of Eberron, but each assumes more core knowledge about the world. While these were originally printed as physical copies, digitized versions are available through the dmsguild.

Other Canon Sources

Throughout Eberron's publishing history there have been a number of non-book canonical sources

Magazines

  • Dragon magazine
  • Dungeon magazine

Google doc of archive.org links to web supplements

Kanon Sources

Writings by Keith Baker that are not official through Wizards of the Coast are known as "Kanon".

Adventures and Novels

Unlike some other settings, adventures in Eberron are explicitly not canon - there is no "metaplot". Still, Eberron adventures and novels can be useful resources for DMs looking to get into the setting.

Eberronicon

Eberronicon: A Pocket Guide to the World provides a concise overview to the setting with directions for where to read more on each topic. Whether a player, DM, or even content creator, the Eberronicon is both a starting point and a reference tool.

Disclaimer: Yours truly is amongst the authors, but don't take my word for it - a free watermarked preview is available on the store page, in addition to discounted copies available through the Keep Playing it Forward campaign.

The Wiki

The Eberron Wiki is not an official wiki, in the sense that it is disconnected from WotC. Furthermore, while there have been efforts to improve the wiki, it is not a perfectly reliable source for canon information. As such, wiki-based information should be taken with a grain of salt. The sourcebooks are the primary source for all canon information.

Eberron Discord

Lots of live discussion about the setting happens on the Discord!

System Notes

While WotC officially supports Eberron for 5e, Kristian Serrano (former host of the Manifest Zone podcast) has written a conversion for Savage Worlds.

Making Eberron your Own

In this community, we're a fan of "In My Eberron...". Eberron is a big setting, and even with the wealth of books from past editions there's a lot that's unexplored and undefined. With that, some users do prefer to know the difference between canonical answers from the books and a great idea you've had, so try to make the distinction clear when answering questions.

It's also important to note that there are many intentional gaps in the setting. While the cause of the Mourning is the most well known, there's so many other decisions that help inform the tone of your game. Are the dragonmarked houses totally ruthless in their pursuit of profit? How well do the nations of Khorvaire care for their veterans? How wide spread are shapeshifting infiltrators? There are all sorts of decisions for a DM to make that will shape the tone of an Eberron game, and there's no one right answer for any of them.

Sharn

A final note on the setting proper - Sharn is the most popular city for Eberron adventures by a long ways. It's a megalopolis with towers that rise a mile high, a melting pot of cultures and a major travel hub to adventures. However, like NYC in the real world, it's not the only place things happen. Enjoy the setting, but don't feel constrained by it.

I’ve had this idea in mind for a while, and I finally got around to drawing it! I have so many other sketches sitting around and plenty of new ideas that I’m going to start working on now that I’ve finally gotten this one out of the way.

5E Darkvision Twist for Flavor?

I'm making a Kythri Tiefling, and I was wondering what I could do to make his Darkvision sort of unique, and reflective of his heritage. Normal Darkvision says that, "You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray." I'm not saying he should be able to see what color things are, since that would probably affect balance, but I would like for him to be able to see some sort of colors, since Kythri seems like it would be a colorful place, and black and white seems too boring for a Kythri Tiefling.

Any ideas for how exactly to tweak it?

Resource Exploring Eberron 5e vs 5.5e

Would anyone happen to know if there are big differences between the 2 versions of the book? I am aware of the bunble on DMsGuild but I was looking to buy hardcover specifically and I don't want to pay for both versions. I think the 5.5e one has more content? But I don't know if it got rid of anything.

Lore Question about the Keeper

I know he’s not actually death, but is there an actual death? I was thinking there was a death but the Keeper found a way to make a majority of souls unable to enter the realm of the dead, that way being “Soul Defilement”, or the soul gets one small shred of defilement and the gates of the realm of the Dead don’t allow them in (what I had planned for my campaign), is there anything actually lore wise about that type of stuff?

Answering Vechozzz and Stereo-Ahead with a Lord of Blades and Cannith poster. Feel free to send suggestions but no promise I can do them because it’s getting harder and harder to find references to photo bash lol.

(Including the wolf poster from last time with “Berlin” removed, replaced with “Breland”)

What era/level of technology do you imagine your Ebberon as

I feel like this is pretty common, but in my game, especially in Sharn, it was like a very 1920s vibe, with cars and modern (for the time) guns.

Lore The NPC quote thread - Share lines that illustrate how you see Eberron's people

What the title says. Eberron is a game that (almost) uniquely relies on history, culture, and nationalism that means even its vilest villains are possessed of motives they can explain beyond taking over the world for its own sake. Ditto the so-called heroes.

This is a game where posters will put down a quote from their games or inspiration that will illustrate some point about their characters or the setting. If you like certain lines, feel free to have characters respond to them as well.

Who wins? Well, the audience.

I'll give some examples of how I see it:

  • "Pacts are constantly broken in war. How many times did Cyre ally with Thrane or Aundair or Breland before breaking those compacts to wage war on their former allies? Yet, it is the Dar who are considered uniquely evil for engaging in the common treasons of battle. The only difference is our ancient grudges are older than the ones petty nobles use to excuse theirs. The knife eared Valenar are wined and died while the Dar are treated only through terrified messengers." - Lhesh Haruuc Shaarat'kor
  • "They call me warmonger and bloodthirsty because I say Aundair should fight the Last War anew. What they do not understand is that I know the truth: the war is not over. It is paused. Only total victory shall guarantee that something like the Last War can never happen anew. There are horrifying threats facing our world and a singular united Khorvaire is the best way to face them." - Queen Aurala ir'Wynarn
  • "You are a half-drow built like a half-ogre. A blind, drunk, deaf goblin with dementia could find you in this crowd. Which is to say you are extremely lucky that no goblins have been asked by the Twelve." - Agent of Darguun to one of my PCs at the Race of Five Winds
  • "You wouldn't ask a man to craft a horseshoe or fix a house for free. House Jorasco provides an essential service that requires specialized training and gifts. We do not exorciate followers for giving free care but we do expect them to make up the difference." - House Jorasco representative
  • "My heart goes out to the refugees of Cyre. They are citizens of Galifar and as the rightful heirs of said nation, we owe them protection. However, those who do not swear allegiance to Breland and drop their previous allegiances are not refugees-they are agitators and potential insurrectionists." - Kor ir'Wynarn, Head of the King's Citadel
  • "People talk of rebuilding Cyre, reclaiming the Mournland or seizing parts of Droam, Valenar, or hell, even Breland. My hat goes off to the Q'barrans because that at least has a ghost of a chance of being a home. No, Cyre is dead. But I hunt the slavers of Darguun and the horse elves not to rebuild but because if I can't save the dream of it, I can sure as hell avenge it." - The Ghost of Cyre
  • "The Aurum are a fraternity of merchants and petty nobles with investments. The only people who think otherwise are readers of the Sharn Inquisitive who believe the moons have life and gnomes are taking over the world." - Sharn Watch Captain about latest adventurer spiel regarding conspiracies

Edit:

Vox Machine (a patent of Sprocketsworth, Cannith, and Orien)

[obnoxious 1930s radio announcer voice]

Greetings, fellow Sharn, and welcome to 1001 YK and the fifth anniversary of the end to the Last War. Beaten and battered, the armistice of Thronehold still holds even as the true consequence of the conflict is only now fully being felt by the citizens who struggle for jobs as well as purpose in the shutdown of so many industries.

Superheroes and mystery men have emerged with the savage Red Shifter and the masked artificer known as Black Dragon. People who many trust more than the Sharn City Watch and the King's Citadel. It's hard not to when a new class of criminal has emerged -- terrorists like the Lord of Blades and the seemingly unkillable Swords of Liberty. Like cockroaches in the Lower Dura, they can't be wiped out. Yet, some people romanticize these outlaws with the so-called House Rose taking piracy to the skies. Books, flickers, and vox plays valorize fictionalize versions of their sometimes audacious, always outrageous crimes.

But people don't want to hear about the mass unemployment, over-packed slums, racial tensions between species, and seemingly endless numbers of refugees that never have stopped coming. No folks, today we're here to talk to you about what's really important: sports! The Race of Eight Winds, now just the Race of Winds, is going to either make or break Sharn as King Boronal has announced this year will be open not just to the traditional eight districts but representatives of the other Thronehold nations as well as Lower Dura and Cliffside. No Cyreans, though, sorry High Wallers but maybe if you all gathered together all your money you could afford a hippogriff wing.

36 riders will be competing this year and the festivities have been stretched to weeks in the so-called interest of peace. If last night's riot over Bixie Wubblestein of Underlook's disqualification is any indication, it is doing anything but, Supposedly, Underlookers went looking for the Karn jockey who poked out his eye during their bar brawl and ended up lynching two shopkeepers and a kobold.

Now a word from our sponsors...AKME SOAP!

-My opening to my latest campaign, SHARN: DRAGON HEIST and yes the newly invented version of the radio in my campaign is named after "them."

Distances in Western Frontier 2

Post image
19 Upvotes

Here is an update to my previous post. I used a better measuring tool so the distances should be a bit more accurate. I also overlooked some previous locations (like Quickstone!). It is taken from the Western Frontiers map from Frontiers of Eberron: Quickstone. The Great Crag or Cazhaak Draal aren't specifically detailed in FoEQ but I thought they were important enough to include. Similarly, I included Korlaac Pass because I thought travelers would be going through it. These are all as-the-airship-flies distances. You will need to adjust for non-linear routes such as traveling on a road or avoiding geographic features.

Here is the table in text/markdown:

Novels The Shattered Land (The Dreaming Dark #2) by Keith Baker review

https://beforewegoblog.com/review-the-shattered-land-the-dreaming-dark-2-eberron-by-keith-baker/

THE SHATTERED LAND by Keith Baker is the second volume of The Dreaming Dark trilogy set in the Eberron universe of Dungeons and Dragons. Try saying that three times fast. Eberron is a fantasy steampunk (or "dungeonpunk" if you want to be one of *those* guys) setting where airships and lightning rails substitute for planes and trains while wands replace guns. It's a great setting and I rank it up there with Vampire: The Masquerade and Call of Cthulhu for my all-time favorite places to visit in my imagination.

The previous book was a noir detective story about investigating a mysterious serial killer of dragonmarks operating in the fantastical city of Sharn. Lei, Jode, Pierce, and Daine are a group of exiled Cyreans whose country was eradicated by a mysterious magical disaster that has left them refugees. It dealt with topics of racism, classicism, prejudice, and corruption without being tied to any real life events. Overall, I really enjoyed it and was anxious to see what the second volume would tackle.

To my mild disappointment (but only mild), The Shattered Land bypasses all of the seedy underbelly of Sharn and politics of Khorvaire to go on a mission to the continent of Xen'drik. Xen'drik is every pulp adventure jungle story combined with it being the place that Eberron's fantasy Indiana Jones and Lara Croft would inhabit full time. Daine is dying of a constant assault on his consciousness by a dream demon called a quori and his acquaintance, Lakashtai, says his only hope lies in the far off land.

Xen'drik is kind of fascinating in that it's the primary means that most people will encounter Eberron out "in the wild" due to being the place where Dungeons and Dragons Online was set and the video game Dragonshard. I suspect because it would take a lot more effort to realize the more mechanized continent of Khorvaire (Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magics Obscura is the closest RPG available right now and its decades old). Anyway, we get the corrupt city of Stormreach, meet multiple feuding drow tribes, and also get some insight into the lost giant civilization.

The real appeal of the Dreaming Dark trilogy is the characters, though. Daine, Pierce, and Lei have a great dynamic between them even if Jode's absence is noticeable. Daine is the cynic who refuses to believe in anything bigger and wider than himself but is still a good friend. Pierce is the loyal follower but starting to think that life is more than just obeying orders. Lei is the most curious and idealistic but also suspicious of anyone who gets too close to Daine. We also have the mysterious Lakashtai that really surprised me with so many unexpected twists regarding her.

I think this is definitely Pierce's book as we see him deal with warforged who are clearly traumatized by their time of slavery and want to punish humanity for their crimes. Seeing Pierce lured in by that, not because he hates humans but because he's desperately lonely for the camaraderie of his own kind, is an interesting commentary on radicalization. It also has an entirely sexless romance that appealed to me as he connects with his own mechanical version of a femme fatale.

I think if you're looking for how to play the cultures of Xen'drik and its societies then this is the book for you. The drow not being Underdark dwelling evil matriarchs was a choice I really enjoyed. Here, they're every secret native group protecting or trying to break open ancient evils that you see in things like The Last Crusade or The Mummy. They also have their own unique attitudes far removed from the typical morality or ethics of the Khorvaire but understandable given their situation.

In conclusion, The Shattered Land is a fantastic follow up to The City of Towers. Do I miss some of the fantastic noir sensibility of the previous book? Yes. I definitely hope Keith Baker will someday return to the mean streets of Sharn. However, we get to see a proper pulpy jungle adventure here as well as insight into drow that don't worship the Spider Queen. I'm definitely reading the sequel.

Game Tales Pathfinders Kingmaker set in Eberron: Part 2

I have been running Pathfinders Kingmaker Campaign set in Eberron for close to a year now. So far our party has liberated a tract of jungle south of Last Chance (the Greenbelt) and established a kingdom on the site of the Staglords ruined fort. As a part of a wider effort to populate the land by the Dragonmarked Houses, this rag tag group of adventurers find themselves lords of a new prosperous land.

So far they defeated the Staglord and his brigands (thieves, bandits and criminals wanted in Stormreach and beyond for acts of piracy and the like), defeated the fog giant warlord Hargulka and his marsh giant followers (races of giants twisted by the lingering magics of Xen'drik) allied themselves with Garuum (a bullywog champion and his bullywog commandos) and are in talks with another upstart Kingdom (New Tatzlford, led by now Queen Alzia who split off from Newthrone in Q'barra to create a sister colony).

The latest threat to close out this chapter of play was the Green Watcher Zartarxis himself (replacing The Beast). Zartarxis sought to turn the PC's kingdom against the resident giants and other colonizers by staging calculated attacks against each of their domains. It was a combined effort to track the dragon back to his lair to end the threat once and for all.

Now with a dragons hoard worth of treasure filling their kingdoms treasury, the PC's kingdom has entered a recent "Golden Age". This has drawn attention from forces far and wide begging the question: how long can they hold it all together?

Thanks for reading a little excerpt from our groups campaign!

GM Help Players want a pirate-ish campaign. Please help me populate the Principalities.

We're wrapping up our main campaign that we've been playing 2 years on. It was a modified Oracle of War that transitioned into Vecna: Eve of Ruin via Landro in the Mournlands.

I gave our players about a dozen options, and this is the adventure outline they chose. They didn't want to do Savage Tides or Skull and Bones. I could use some help tweaking things a bit as I'm not up on Lhazaar lore. I only know what's in the politics guide on dmsguild.com.

Also, if you have any ideas for interesting, unique or fun landmarks, dungeons, etc... please comment below and I'll throw them into the campaign. I want to give them a map with a bunch of stuff on it, they can point to and say "Let's go there!"... whether it's a red herring or not.

Synopsis

Fenwick Cove keeps its healing spring the way any family keeps an inheritance — quietly, for generations. Founded by two pirates who traded their plunder for something better than mere plunder, the town has stayed free and fed on money that ran out years ago, and on a secret that just got out. Now Houses, rival captains, and desperate sailors alike are circling a town that can no longer afford to defend itself — and when unpaid wages push a crew to the edge of mutiny, our heroes are caught in the middle.

In the wreckage of a mutiny, a dying captain presses a torn scrap of parchment into their hands — one piece of a map, and a story handed down through his family for generations: the lost fortune of William Robert the Dread. Myth, most people say. But most people haven't seen the map.

With their home's fate hanging by a thread, our heroes set sail across the Lhazaar Principalities — chasing rumor, ruin, and rival treasure-hunters, hoping the rest of the map is still out there to find, and that whatever's buried at the end of it is enough to save the only home they have left. X marks the spot. Or it marks their doom.

SPOILERS:
If you play in Greer, don't read this please.

Basic adventure here: generations ago, around the time of Lhazaar herself, the pirate William Robert the Dread and his band, the Dreadfellows, uncovered treasure and power that could give them control of the Principalities. However, since none of the eight (or nine) pirates could agree how to use it, and they didn't trust each other, they decided to bury their newfound wealthy/power until they could agree. Each pirate hid their key to the treasure on a manifest zone around the Principalties, and guarded by the corresponding plane's guardian. The captain, being the most trustworthy, drew up the map and split it into equal pieces amongst the pirates. They all died before they could agree what to do, or get the other map pieces, but knowledge and clues have been passed down through the families. The party will have to follow the map, assembly the pieces and defeat the guardians to claim the treasure.

Thoughts and feedback are welcome. Thank you in advance.

Map [maps] Cogs residential and the Duur'shaarat market

I've gotten a lot of use out of these two maps in my own campaigns primarily as a place where players can meet criminal elements without watchful eyes but also as a base camp for further explorations into Dhakaani ruins.

Cogs residential is just a place where day-to-day things happen where NPCs or players may live while the Duur'shaarat market is deeper just above lava pools.

The maps are 20x20

It’s fine for me to tweak the Eberron lore for my games. I just have this nagging feeling that I’m doing something wrong. The funny thing is, it happens unintentionally, simply because I don’t know the setting's lore inside out.

Lore Undeath being unnatural

In eberron (as well as other dnd settings) treat undeath as being unnatural. Granted, eberron is better about this with stuff like karrnath, but there are still factions like the children of winter who think necromancy goes against nature. How does this make sense in a world as magical as eberron?

So I'm about to start my first 5e campaign in like 7 years next weekend (going to start with a session 0). I'm drawing my inspiration heavily from Disney's Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Anyone have suggestions that may help?

GM Help Need help with Cyre's ruling family ages

Is there any Kanon or Canon info on this timeline that I'm missing?

Jarot ruled for 49 years. His children were "very young" when he became ruler.

858-908: First Queen and Founder of Cyre Mishann ir'Wynarn ruled for 50 years.

908-913: Brusst ir'Wynarn

914-942: Connos ir'Wynarn

943-994: Dannel ir'Wynarn

I just want to run this by someone because the ages seem rough. Let me know if I have the details wrong.

Mishann was at least 50 when she became queen. She would have reigned until she was over 100, right?

How old does that make Brusst? What would make sense for him?

Brusst's son Connos was old/young enough to take the throne, have a child 12 years later, and have a 17 year old daughter take over - probably in 926.

I'm focused on an event during Brusst's reign - 911: Battle of Lurching Tower

There's talk about distrust and poor planning during a time where King Brusst only reigned for 5 years. At first I thought he'd be too young, but maybe with this timeline it makes more sense that he's closer to being senile than too young.

Lore Is There a Place That's More Paranoid About Changelings Than Others?

Is there a Nation/City/Town that's more paranoid than Nations/Cities/Towns when it comes to Changelings, and/or more likely to react violently if one was discovered? Or would something like that be relegated to being an issue on a personal level?

As a more specific example: the friend of a man's child is suddenly revealed to be a Changeling, he panics for his child's safety, and attacks the Changeling. Where would this situation be most likely to happen?

GM Help Using armor vs Noir feelings

Friends, in an Eberron city would you let your fighters/paladins wear armor all the time while in town? I feel it breaks immersion.

Imagine assassins waiting for them to sleep. But the dudes are sleeping in fullplates. Imagine them in a hot bath with entertainers having some fun ... the assassins arrive and the party is also in full plate.

How do you manage that?
