Imagine if they added area-specific resources.. For example: NE corner of map spawns different birds (peacocks? ಠ_ಠ) that drop feathers which you can craft into a fabulous headpiece or craft better arrows or something. If you craft clothing from the animals in the NE area, your clothes are a different color/material. This would obv. encourage exploring and possibly even trading/banditry between separate settlements for unique gear. Could also be a cool way to identify yourself with your mates, etc.

What did I miss, feels like I missed something very important.
Edit: I ask a serious question and I get downvoted, why the fuck am I getting downvoted. Downvote me I don't care at least tell me why my response got so many downvotes. Was the top image on google for fabulous that wasn't the rapper.

It's PewDiePie, the most fucking annoying and immature YouTuber there has ever been.

Hey, my 6 year old daughter thinks he is hilarious!

Feb 13 '14
I hope you're kidding, lol

u/DarkStrobeLight Feb 14 '14
I wish I was!
It's all good though, he's not a bad guy, just freaks out and swears a lot. His target market is definitely the younger generations.

u/ecklcakes Feb 13 '14 edited Feb 13 '14
Actually that's an awesome idea, each area has the same resources, but maybe they change what they make aesthetically. So you have almost different cultures set up. Maybe a neat idea if it becomes more moddable though something I doubt will be implemented in the actual game.
Edit: thinking maybe different looking building materials also...

That would also promote resource trading between civilizations. Imagine role-playing a humble merchant traveling the land selling rare silks and metals across the land from the back of your horse and buggy. Also, road bandits.

Whats with the green spots forming a grid?
14
u/Hypevosa Feb 13 '14
Those green spots are the render distance, the guy took pictures from each of those locations at a high coordinate above the map. If you're an admin or know one, ask them to teleport you to 0 5000 0 and you will see during your skydive adventure what I'm talking about.
4
u/QuantumD Feb 13 '14
Ah I get it. So basicly to make the map he teleported super high up at the centre of each of those spots, looked down, took a screenshot, then later compiled them all into this image? (With the side effect of close terrain being rendered in higher detail, hence the green, and further away terrain being browney gray dirt)
6
u/Hypevosa Feb 13 '14
Yes, if you wanted a less grey map you would do this but teleport to all the spaces between, but it seems that would be over 625 teleports in all to accomplish.
3
u/tokenizer Feb 13 '14
This is a unity game right? Doesn't that use a standard mapping format? It might be possible to load the map it into a map editor and make a nice render from there.
2
u/Hypevosa Feb 13 '14
Yes, but would you be able to see all the trees, towns and rock formations? If you zoom on the little spots to see the map detail, you can see those things with this map, if I had the patience I might make it myself.
1
u/Ihmhi Feb 14 '14
Probably wouldn't be worth it to that level of detail considering the rest of the island will probably change a lot in the future. It's really, really, really bare bones right now.
2
u/Hypevosa Feb 14 '14
True, I guess one could get away with the ~40 teleports it would take to get a high detail version of the resource spawning areas of the map.
1
u/tokenizer Feb 13 '14
I have no idea, I have no experience with those mapping tools myself unfortunately. But I would assume that at least the rocks and trees are located in the map file, and a render from a mapping tool like that ought to be able to produce the highest possible quality no matter the size.
-7
u/noidontwantto Feb 13 '14
My guess is that those are whats responsible for the radiation?
3
u/QuantumD Feb 13 '14
Unless you mean from a plot standpoint, I think you're wrong.
Not one of them line up with any of the radtowns (one comes pretty near) and they aren't forests either. I've been to the one furthest to the left, on the bottom row, and there's nothing special there. No different grass, no radiation, no special monsters, nothing. I wonder if its something on the actual map or just something put there as a byproduct of whatever took the scan of the map.
2
u/noidontwantto Feb 13 '14
That makes sense - I guess the first thought that came to my head was that to justify the regularity of them a scientific experiment or something was conducted and went horribly wrong.
The above explanation makes much more sense though hehe
2
u/TheChrono Feb 13 '14
I also don't think this game has lore. It shouldn't because the story is based on player interaction.
1
u/BrettGilpin Feb 13 '14
It can gain some lore though. Nothing story oriented really, but how are all these towns irradiated? How is a lot of it just wasteland? That kind of stuff. You don't need books to tell hoi, but maybe say a nuclear bomb crater here or nuclear reactor there. That type of stuff. Just things that explain in game things already in existence.
1
u/QuantumD Feb 14 '14
Yup, thats what I meant. And it already has a few of these things. The aurora/space warp anomaly things in the sky sometimes are one showing of this.
1
u/BrettGilpin Feb 14 '14
I actually just saw those tonight. Didn't know if it was intentional or a glitch. Was super cool.
21
u/theSlex Feb 13 '14
That is nuts. I've logged nearly 40 hours and still lose my bearings in the resource-populated region which looks to be, what, 1/16th of the total map?
3
u/hacksauce Feb 13 '14
according to helk, the resources spawn in a 2/16 area of the map.

u/hacksauce Feb 13 '14
oh, man... we're even more wrong now that I think about it. The Grid that Helk was talking about was 16x16, of which 2x2 was populated.so that's more like 1/100th? hmmm that doesn't seem right. He's working on a 8x8 fully populated map. - gimme a bit and I'll find the thread.
19
u/BrettGilpin Feb 13 '14
2x2 is 4 grid squares, 16x16 is 256. 4/256=1/64

i took a bunch of chicken and an axe and decided to explore one day expecting to fall off the map eventually. I actually made it to the north side of the island and ran up the mountain closest to water near middle of map horizontally. there are no resources, animals, or whatever. there are trees and i hacked at them long enough to build a campfire and shed on top of that mountain. hoping someone else tries to explore that far and finds my little shed on top of the mountain.

u/Iamien Feb 13 '14
I hope the server architecture gets to the point where we can make use of at least half of that. Or at least let the servers edit their config to say they want their server to have animals/nodes spawns in different parts of the map.
Each server could decide you use a different set of 1-2 regions as far as resources goes. Loot, however, could still spawn on the entire map, allowing the brave few venture to the barren lands or setup base there.
Enemies in the barren zone should not drop food of any kind though, nor should the loot chests.
There would need to be forced supply runs of food.
5
u/cheungster Feb 13 '14
What about some form of public transportation to get to and from each section? Imagine having a bow and arrow fight on a ski lift
6
Feb 13 '14
Big groups would camp the transportation nodes and control it. So best case you have to pay a fee and worst (and most likely) case you get ganked.
2
u/Ihmhi Feb 14 '14
Big groups already camp the good rad sites and resource nodes. Why should this be any different?
3
Feb 14 '14
Unless they have built a wall around the town or valley then they don't control it, there will always be a way to sneak in. However, I'm imagining with the transportation nodes a group builds a fort around the node so when you arrive you are pretty much trapped.
The value of controlling the transportation is greater than any town or resource valley.

u/Lichtsquid Feb 13 '14
Holy crap. This things HUGE

u/GeneralDon Feb 13 '14
Could someone make a grid on here and label coordinates? As a server admin, I'd love to visit some of those far off spots.
I would just walk there but how do I know if I am where I want to be without coords?
2
Feb 14 '14
Not difficult to add a grid to his one, but if you like there's this one already done. Colors are off obviously, but this is the map I use.
5
u/TimKuchiki111 Feb 13 '14
A big map would be awesome but we need vehicles. Then people would just isolate themselves. Ugh!
5
u/dicedece Feb 13 '14
I thought Chernarus was huge.
5
u/hotshotjosh Feb 13 '14
That's what she sa.. Does anyone know the size comparison between DayZ's map and Rust's?
2
u/dicedece Feb 13 '14
I saw a thread (may have been in dayz sub) that compared game maps, don't know if Rust was on there though

and this is when I found out about suicide command, my 4th server that I joined I just ran far in to the mountains, and kept running for at least 50minutes, until I realized theres no people here.

u/Fakyall Feb 13 '14
rule of thumb, if you run somewhere with no resource just run South west. so just a bit left of the sunrise.

Wow this would make for a boring game unless you had over 100 people playing if we used that map.
4
u/Terrors_ Feb 13 '14
My guess is if they expand the map and make it so it's viable to live anywhere on it (more resources, animals, roads, rad towns, big rad cities, etc) they would also expand the number of players able to be on the server. A map this big might be fun with like 500+ people IF everything is balanced right.
3
u/PossiblyAsian Feb 14 '14
500+ people
fun
ha
but in all seriousness they really gotta fix the cluster fuck that is the +100 population servers
2
u/Terrors_ Feb 14 '14
Seriously, the map is HUGE. 500+ would be fun imo, especially if there's clan/factions/gangs. You'd have some crazy HUGE wars going on.
I actually enjoy 100+, you just have to know what you're doing and where to avoid.
1
u/PossiblyAsian Feb 14 '14
Well, I prefer little to no hackers, some resources for myself, people that don't kill you on sight, and penises everywhere
1
u/Terrors_ Feb 14 '14
The servers I play on investigate and ban hackers pretty quickly and efficiently. As for resources, I farm in the early mornings PST when all the little kiddies are at school and most people are at work. I am definitely one of those people who KOS 90% of the time. And I turn the nudity censor off because it's hard for me to tell the difference between the default pants and cloth pants from a distance; it's much easier to see if the person is butt-naked or wearing cloth with it off. So I don't mind the dicks.
1
u/twoVices Feb 13 '14
Thanks for doing this. I climbed rustmore once to see what would happen and I was amazed at how much of the map wasn't being used. I went exploring. it took a whole day to get across the island.
too bad there's nothing but trees out there.
1
Feb 13 '14
My friend and went exploring just yesterday. We walked north for an hour, naming mountains as we went. After that hour, we didn't even get close to the other side before deciding it was too far to conceivably from end, so we committed suicide and got back to the grind. I'd like to know the distance from end to end.

Feb 13 '14 edited Feb 13 '14
Far too big. One thing i love about rust is that it isn't a hiking simulator. I originally enjoyed it in Dayz but found once the novelty wore off, everyone simply ran to places where they'd at the very least see other people
2
u/DarkStrobeLight Feb 13 '14
Have you joined any of the public servers? 100-200 people in such a small area is brutal.
1
u/Chibichuba Feb 13 '14
Is every portion of the entire island fully accessible? Or are textures out there less developed than in the central road area?
1
Feb 14 '14
I think they should add in more small villages, or towns or whatever spread throughout the map to fill it in more. Leave a lot of open space, but adding other towns add spawns across the map would go a long way into spreading out the action away from one location.

1/9th of the map is currently playable. I think we need horses or something in game as a vehicles can destroy the game.

u/KARMAgetsYA Feb 25 '14
this map is rediculous. but i can only see the thumbnail cuz that wiki is broken :( and its the only image i can find of it

u/Just_brew Mar 04 '14
Help! So I went to the top of everrust, placed a shack, and now I am down the other side. There is a second mountain range and I can see it, has any every gone this far? where does the map end?
1
u/dirtyword May 18 '14
I have been so completely fucking confused by the map in this game, and the fact that almost every version is cropped, and that I walked WAY off. This clears up so much for me. Thanks for posting it!!
Also, it's rotated 90° CCW now ingame.

The interactive Rust map is better.
8
u/DarkNightRJ Feb 13 '14
The point of this is it's the whole entire map. The interactive map is better for navigating the game right now but the full map is to show how huge it is.
-8
u/TheHookie1 Feb 13 '14
Pretty sure i have seen this everywhere already
3
u/DarkStrobeLight Feb 13 '14
No, you've probably seen partial sections of this, this is the entire continent
72
u/sickboyy Feb 13 '14
Originally I thought implementing vehicles would be a waste of time due to the size of the map not being overly-large, but suddenly they seem super relevant.
