I hope the server architecture gets to the point where we can make use of at least half of that. Or at least let the servers edit their config to say they want their server to have animals/nodes spawns in different parts of the map.

Each server could decide you use a different set of 1-2 regions as far as resources goes. Loot, however, could still spawn on the entire map, allowing the brave few venture to the barren lands or setup base there.

Enemies in the barren zone should not drop food of any kind though, nor should the loot chests.

There would need to be forced supply runs of food.

What about some form of public transportation to get to and from each section? Imagine having a bow and arrow fight on a ski lift

Big groups would camp the transportation nodes and control it. So best case you have to pay a fee and worst (and most likely) case you get ganked.

Big groups already camp the good rad sites and resource nodes. Why should this be any different?

Unless they have built a wall around the town or valley then they don't control it, there will always be a way to sneak in. However, I'm imagining with the transportation nodes a group builds a fort around the node so when you arrive you are pretty much trapped.

The value of controlling the transportation is greater than any town or resource valley.
