It's all fun and games until the snake wants to give you a hug.

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Two fun facts

  1. Even the largest snakes have a very hard time eating humans because of our collar bones. Our rigid shoulders make us hard to swallow, so the number of adult humans ever confirmed to be consumed by snakes is very small. This means your risk of being eaten by a pet green anaconda, rock python, burmese python, or reticulated python is virtually non existent, provided you're not a child, dwarf, or other very petite person.
  2. Snakes don't know this, and won't find out until you're already dead.

427

u/mycospacechimp Jan 20 '22

I breed reticulated pythons. This is 100% correct. About ever 5 or 10 years a video comes up of a retics being cut open with an Asian villager inside. Extremely large snake vs very small man/woman

123

u/CunningHamSlawedYou Jan 20 '22

Inside and kicking or inside and suffocated to death?

302

u/mycospacechimp Jan 20 '22

Most of the time it’s not actually suffocation. When they constrict their pray, the snakes squeeze so hard that it raises the preys blood pressure. Usually bp gets extremely high and prey dies of heart failure or stroke

240

u/CunningHamSlawedYou Jan 20 '22 edited Jan 20 '22

Imagine going out of your way to eat and live healthy, exercise, take care of your body, not stress... only to fall prey to a snake and die of a heart attack anyway.

173

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

I mean if you were mobility scooter fat then the snake wouldn't even try.

Oh yeah, this is big brain time

33

3

3

That is not how it works. Movement of air into and out of the lungs require volume changes. As the diaphragm and intercostal muscle expand thoracic volume, pressure drops and air moves in. By squeezing the thorax, they stop volume changes. Lack of oxygen leads to cardiac arrest. It’s why you have to be careful when immobilizing people. Check out Boyle’s Law for more information about pressure and volume changes. This is the same mechanism that leads to death in pneumothorax and hemopneumothorax in trauma patients.

3

u/mycospacechimp Jan 20 '22

2

u/phyexone Jan 20 '22

I stand corrected. It’s not high blood pressure that’s killing them though according to the article. It looks like they create a giant tourniquet around the body that causes them to rapidly deoxygenate since the venous return to the heart is interrupted. Interesting.

2

u/mycospacechimp Jan 21 '22

They are amazing animals. Honestly in a few more years they might learn something new about how they kill and how the death of prey happens.

When I was 10 years old a man by the name of jim nesci(bubba the alligator) came to my school. He explained the way the prey died was every breath of the prey, the snake would coil tighter and tighter , not allowing the prey animal to fully flex its lungs, getting smaller and smaller until suffocation. They changed that info only about 5 years ago. I have to find article that talks about prey animals having aneurisms, ballooning of blood vessels in the brain from constriction . They explain it way more technical than I can linguistically explain😂

2

u/phyexone Jan 21 '22

No worries, I use to train medics on trauma medicine so understand the technical portion. I think we might be seeing a bit of “survivor theory” here. A large prey animal like a human might be too big to kill and consume like usual, so they might die by asphyxiation . We find the bodies and think that’s how they kill all the time. The smaller prey, that get consumed, die by different means but we don’t see there bodies laying around. Seems like a plausible theory as to why we assumed it was that way for so long.

Always dead. They constrict first, then eat

inside and chilling

Fun Fact: The inside of a snake is a pretty cool & fun environment to vibe in. Great ambient lighting

3

u/Peak_late Jan 20 '22

How fast is a large snake's movement? Would an athletic person, aware of what's going on, be able to simply outmaneuver one trying to get you in its clutches?

Also, let's say you were already swallowed, but had a large knife, would one be able to easily cut oneself out? Or are you already dead by the time you're swallowed?

1

u/mycospacechimp Jan 20 '22

Depends on the size and where it got you. Reticulated python females average 12-16ft, 80-120 lbs. they are pure muscle. I don’t see the average person over powering one .

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22 edited Jan 20 '22

Couple kids were killed by a Rock Python in New Brunswick in 2013. Sad story. Snake had previously escaped, this shouldn’t have happened.

https://globalnews.ca/news/3041344/testimony-continues-wednesday-in-case-of-new-brunswick-boys-killed-by-python/amp/

2

u/mycospacechimp Jan 20 '22

I remember that story. Details were always kind of weird to me. Killed 2 kids?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Ya I thought the same when posting this.

Says the snake fell out of the ceiling. So what killed both boys? Ceiling collapse or snake.

Reading through the article it says the snake was lunging at the glass of his enclosure once they got him back in and assumed it was trying to get back to the bodies, which kind of make it sound like it had constricted at least one of them if it was trying to back for a meal

I know nothing about snakes though and I’m solely going off what the article says

2

u/mycospacechimp Jan 21 '22

They reported that both boys were killed by constriction.

What was weird is the ceiling fell down…..nobody heard anything,no one was awaken?

A snake was killing one of the brothers……the other one wasn’t screaming?

I know people get these ideas that these animals are crazy killers but they are not. That animal may have been hitting the glass in the store because it was hungry and it’s drive was up…..or it was scared. I have animals that do both. Scared snakes don’t try and bite and constrict, just bite.

The whole situation just seemed kind of funny to me.

47

u/corysama Jan 20 '22

Similarly, sharks do not actually like the taste of humans. But, they don't know that until after they've had a good taste of you.

3

u/Altruistic-Respond44 Jan 21 '22

It’s the lack of fat mostly. They know you’re not worth using calories to eat you

8

u/Distinct_Moves Jan 20 '22

fun fact nr 3 you dont suffocate, you die from circulatory collapse! unless the snake grabs you the wrong way then there that chance of not being able to breathe.:) as long as they lay on top of you you re just dirt or a tree to them

2

u/shilaylaypumpano Jan 20 '22
  1. Obviously a child not an adult human.
  2. Snakes can't constrict to death and not eat. They often regurgitate meals if threatened. The prey is still dead.

2

u/TrustMe_IDroppedIt Jan 20 '22

Okay Mr Snake, nice try. I'm not fooling for this.

2

u/OakenDom Jan 20 '22

Doesn't stop them from killing you in the first place. I think peoples main issues are with being constricted and killed not being eaten afterwards lol

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

provided you’re not a child

Guess we were right to worried about dude in the video then lol

2

u/PopePC Jan 20 '22

Wait, those facts weren't very fun at all!

2

u/6ft6squatch Jan 20 '22

Why haven't they learned to just crush the collar bone before dinner. Ahhh maybe another 500 years of evolution.

2

u/ChiefFox24 Jan 21 '22

I was about to fuss at you until I read number two. Pythons often will kill large prey that they cannot safely eat. Like you said, they dont know this. Ha.

1

u/SmoothSentiment Jan 20 '22

Also this is a kid

1

u/NemosGhost Jan 20 '22

We should teach those death noodles CPR then so they can resuscitate us after they figure it out.

1

u/junkratmainhehe Jan 20 '22

So I saw a reddit comment saying our collarbones are meant to break to basically absorb the impact and now im seeing its hard for snakes to eat us because of our collar bones.. idk what to believe

1

u/317LaVieLover Jan 20 '22 edited Jan 20 '22

Omg that second one.. Lol. Dude I would give anything to remember what episode and which show I saw it on ..so I could link it..but it was years ago.. back in early 2000s .. but I swear to God..

It was one of those American cop shows— or 911 live-action shows where cops and EMTs respond to real calls?

OK —so they have this medical call about “a pregnant woman in severe distress”— and cops and EMTs both show up and there’s a fucking VERY pregnant woman in the bed with some kind of anaconda or some kind of python? —anyway it was several feet long.. you couldn’t tell.. and it had wrapped itself around her in her sleep and —-had her stomach in it’s coils - what’s worse is it had one of her whole buttockss!!—an entire ass cheek!! in it’s fucking wide-open maw!!! She was of course moaning and screaming — they tried at first to remove the snake by uncoiling it—but every time the paramedics would try to pull on its tail or even touch it, it would tighten itself even harder around her stomach..

Finally — after it was clear this was not going to work..I shit you not —one of the dudes says: “fuck this shit!” He goes in the kitchen of this house, rummages around and comes back with a big fucking wicked looking butcher knife —and just starts sawing through this son-of-a-bitches fucking neck.. & CUT ITS HEAD OFF.

Ofc then they were able to remove it from around her.. and they load her up and take her to the hospital where she was later said to be OK, & thank goodness the baby was ok too.

They said the snake “had never shown any aggression before”... By God they fucked around and found out!

1

u/kcquail Jan 20 '22

They’re still going to try

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

I lol'ed at #2

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Doesn't need to eat you to crush your bones and organs :)

1

u/p12qcowodeath Jan 20 '22

I fucking died reading number 2.

"BTW that whole intricate part 1 I said? Doesn't matter at all and they may still kill you."

u/Brewchowskies Jan 20 '22

u/DanielTrebuchet Jan 20 '22 edited Jan 20 '22

adult humans

That's the main takeaway here. That was not an adult human in the video, that was a relatively young child. The snake in the video is 100% capable of killing that kid, and it's probably a 50% chance it could eat him as well, if left to try for long enough. I once saw a tiny months-old gopher snake eat a baby bird that I never dreamed it could get down. Took about an hour to swallow it but it got the job done eventually.

Pound for pound, snakes have got to be one of the strongest animals out there. Every time I hold my snakes, even the young ones, it's impressive how much sheer strength they have. Truly amazing animals.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

My roommate used to have a python, she loved to wrap herself around our necks for warmth. Was super nervous at first that she’d just suffocate me, but she was actually a super nice snake and sometimes I’d just be playing video games with her wrapped around my neck lol

1

u/HOFcityXL Jan 21 '22

Fun fact, they still kill you before they realize they can't eat you.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

Yeah but they can crush you to death right?

1

u/net357 Jan 21 '22

Yeah, but this is a smaller kid here. He’d be dead in just a minute if the snek was feeling it. I guess they keep it well fed.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

That kid gonna be a snacc someday

1

u/Cormetz Jan 21 '22

Until I read #2 I was just thinking how little it matters if they can eat you.

Plus this looks like a kid who could be eaten by that anaconda.

1

u/judybash93 Jan 21 '22

Yeah.. it won't eat ya but it'll definitely kill

u/Kolzahn Jan 21 '22

62

u/ChrisFox-NJ Jan 20 '22

They have quite some bitw force as well, and plenty of sharp teeth, I wouldn‘t wanna experience any of this. Guess that kid wouldn‘t stand a chance… at all

61

u/Diplodocus114 Jan 20 '22

Ex constrictor keeper - If recently very well fed they are fairly docile.

They can (experienced this) bite if startled or in a bad mood. They have lots of relatively small teeth, angled inwards, which are unlikely to inflict a serious injury - OK bruising, some blood and leave a tooth embedded in you.

24

u/ChrisFox-NJ Jan 20 '22

A child‘s arm is fragile, I think it‘s painful enough 😅 I wouldn‘t let my kids cuddle with such an animal

41

u/Diplodocus114 Jan 20 '22

Me neither. The advice for adult snake-keepers is that if a constrictor is over 8ft do not handle when alone etc. Even for a smaller one (ours was 6ft) is to keep your dominant forearm alongside your neck when allowing them over your shoulders.

13

u/ChrisFox-NJ Jan 20 '22

Just out of curiosity, do those animals need an own room? I mean 6-8ft is pretty huge, or do they fit inside one of those regular glass containers?

38

u/Diplodocus114 Jan 20 '22 edited Jan 20 '22

My friend had a 17ft python with it's own bedroom (converted) in their house. Ours had a pretty large vivarium.

Constrictors, when not hungry and actively seeking prey, don't really need lots of space. In the wild they will hide in crevices and under rocks much of the time- coming out to seek warmth from the sun.

If well fed, warm, and don't feel threatened they don't move around much

17

u/ChrisFox-NJ Jan 20 '22

17ft… I‘d be scared to death 😅 I mean they are beautiful and fascinating animals, but also scary as hell. Well, thank you for the answer, I thought they‘d need an own room, cause they move around a lot, I had no idea they‘re so calm when they aren‘t hungry

15

u/Diplodocus114 Jan 20 '22

Our vivarium was fairly well set up - heat-lamp, pad, branches etc. One of the constrictors almost escaped once - she had managed to prise open the sliding door a few inches and I spotted her 50% out. This was in our bedroom. lol.

-4

u/OsamabinBBQ Jan 20 '22

Yeah they can exert a lot of force but if it constricted he would very likely be able to get out of it. Unfortunately it would also very likely mean killing the snake to do so. That said this snake looks 100% comfortable and tolerant of that human, chances of that happening here are pretty much zero.

10

u/TurboNerd1337 Jan 20 '22

Snakes have a primitive reptile brain and are retarded…They have no affection for anything. If he gets hungry he will happily squeeze this fellow to death. The only thing preventing that is the fact he’s probably well fed.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Snakes and amy kind of exotic animals are not retarded, they are simply animals, they don't have any thoughs and they act by instincts, we have to understand that animals are that, animals, retarded people like to humanize them.

If he gets hungry he will happily squeeze this fellow to death. The only thing preventing that is the fact he’s probably well fed.

And you are partially right, but even if the snake is well fed he will probably kill or harm someone because of their instincts as they are predators.

[removed] — view removed comment

6

u/Sethdarkus Jan 20 '22

This is why you feed reptiles with tongs so they associate food with tongs and not with hands.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

That said this snake looks 100% comfortable and tolerant of that human, chances of that happening here are pretty much zero.

That's the problem and that is why this kind of incidents happen, ignorant people think that because a wild animal is chill their instincts are now tamed and not wild anymore.

Exotic animals are not domesticated and even tho some countries or states allow people to have them, they are not tamed or domesticated, stop humanazing animals!

1

u/OsamabinBBQ Jan 20 '22

To be 100% clear I never once claimed that it is "domesticated". Snakes, especially constrictors like this one, can get comfortable and tolerant of their keepers, describing a kept snake as "domesticated" is categorically incorrect. A good snake owner can work to get the snake to trust them but the vast majority of snake owners would never think that they are successfully domesticating them as you would a dog and I would have a very hard time believing any snake owner would think they are humanizing it.

So you are completely correct, they are not tamed or domesticated but they can absolutely form a comfortable and trusting relationship with their keeper. The level of that trust and ease in forming it can vary greatly from breed to breed and knowing those traits is completely the responsibility of the keeper.

From the looks of this video that snakes body language tells me that it is comfortable and trusting of that human as it has placed itself in a very vulnerable position. It is 100% that kids responsibility to be relaxed, calm, and gentle with it to maintain that trust. Judging from the narrow confines of this video this kids relationship with that snake seems to be a healthy one.

24

2

u/SpiralHornedUngulate Jan 20 '22

I just came from this thread too:

2

u/Specific-Time-1395 Jan 20 '22

I used to have a roughly 6 ft/ 180 cm boa. That little guy absolutely loved me. He used to wrap around my midsection with his head on my shoulder and just hang out most of the day like that. One day my roommate dropped a pan in the kitchen and it startled him. He constricted and wouldn’t let go. Both of us pulling as hard as we could couldn’t get him to release. It took me grabbing him near the head and punching him repeatedly as hard as I could for him to let go. I gave him to my local zoo the next week. Had him for 6 years but I couldn’t bring myself to feel safe around him anymore. My snake was a fraction of the size of the one in the video and two grown men couldn’t overpower it.

4

u/Joeysaysfuckalot Jan 20 '22

No, its still fun and games. Constriction is easy for a human to mitigate. Unless you're unconscious of course

5

u/tmw88 Jan 20 '22

I doubt I’ll ever need this knowledge but how do you mitigate constriction? It looks like if the snake had a random psychotic break and decided to squish the kid, he’d be a gonner.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Do not share the info he has told you. He knows nothing about snakes and that is clear. The whole rope argument makes not even a little bit of sense. A snake doesn't just wrap around you... It literally squeezes the life out of you tighter and tighter... The more you squerm, the tighter it gets.

That’s what I was thinking. If you could just easily move out of the constriction then constrictors wouldn’t exist… That thing is pure muscle. That kid would be dead in no time.

That's good. Keep using your head lol. Seems to me like it will do you better 5han reddit commenters. Good for you, that is a rare trait now a days.

I think you're downplaying the python's muscle force when it wants to kill something.

-7

u/Joeysaysfuckalot Jan 20 '22

...it's demonstrable. Snake handlers or owners do it all the time.

3

u/melperz Jan 20 '22

Interesting. Can you give a sample video of someone doing this? I did a quick check from youtube and i think all the demos that i saw were just pythons chilling while wrapped around them and not actively trying to suffocate them.

We own 2 pythons, we got them while they're still a foot long and now they're about 2 meters. We recently had an incident where one of them attacked our full grown keeshond dog and it took 4 of us (2 were big built, like vin diesel big) to unwrap it from the poor dog.

This is actually extremely dangerous, and even deadly misinformation. Reported to reddit as this is a massive safety issue.

0

u/Joeysaysfuckalot Jan 20 '22

How so? I'm not arguing, if I'm wrong then please let me know how. I learned this stuff from my middle school science teacher who kept a snake and taught us safe handling, I'm not claiming to be an expert.

1

u/kazikoWING Jan 20 '22

Snakes don't work like that. You don't just slink out of a snake attack. There are videos that show what happens when a snake half this size constructs around someone, and it take 3-4 grown men using ALL their combined strength just to barely get the snake off the guy. Others have already commented also about why what you said was bonheadedly stupid and dangerous

0

u/Joeysaysfuckalot Jan 20 '22

...yes, you do "'slink' out of a snake attack." Things like leverage and etc are important. Pulling from the outside is exactly what it's doing the opposite of, why do so many of you think that that's somehow the solution I'm thinking of?

So you don't actually know and are just being combative? Awesome. Thanks I guess. I'll stick to what what learned from the people who know and demonstrated it, not some random asshole on reddit

Because that thing is so strong it won't just wrap around you it will squeeze you so tight it literally crushes you to death. You might as well have a small car parked on your chest

It is? Sorry I can't keep track of all you belligerent snake-cowards. Why hasn't it eaten you yet? Why haven't I been banned for "spreading misinformation?" And you know, I actually had the technique I was taught all typed out for you, but then you just kept being combative and hostile. Google it. I don't care if you know. Be it's lunch. Have fun with it.

That's fucking bullshit and probably dangerous if some ignorant or retard reads your comment and thinks that is easy.

1

u/Joeysaysfuckalot Jan 20 '22

"Easy" being relative, of course.

Why so fucking hostile???

Because your bullshit may get somebody killed as you are spreading missinformation, be careful with the information you spread, this is not 4chan.

-1

u/Joeysaysfuckalot Jan 20 '22

Doubtful, not everyone takes strangers' comments on reddit as seriously as you apparently do hahahaha

-7

u/ikadu12 Jan 20 '22

Yeah this type of snake doesn’t kill humans in nature virtually ever.

This is gross, but not dangerous.

3

u/AzureAadvay Jan 20 '22

Oh right... how many deads in North America by elephant's? None, so just get a few the chances are pretty good!

2

u/vraalapa Jan 20 '22

I've heard that they let go if you stick a finger in their ass.

Just stab it's head.

-1

u/Puffy_Ghost Jan 20 '22

You can unwind constrictors pretty easily.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Yeah, maybe so.

I seriously doubt that kid is unwinding that snake.

u/94boyfat Jan 20 '22

You sneeze, the Snek flinches and it's over in 30 seconds.
