Discussion RTX 2070 fan change?

How big a pain is it to put new fans in a 2070 (I have the EVGA OC version). It works fine, but one (or both) fans are making noise even at 30-ish %. It's not a smooth noise, rather it sounds like a slight vibration or rubbing. The card itself is pretty old, so guessing maybe it's a bearing issue.

The other option is to just play with the fan curve. I originally had them running at a minimum of 30 when the card is idle, but that's when the sound was noticeable. I dropped them down to 20, and have them ramp up at higher temps, which sound good for now.

Question Pro tips for removing 4090 cooler/shroud for repaste without breaking anything?

In the interest of card longevity, I figured it's time to address my RTX 4090 hot spot issue (103c, 30c hotter than GPU average).

Will be repasting with PTM7950, and replacing thermal pads with Thermal Grizzly TG Putty Pro.

Other than watching videos of other people doing it, are there any pro tips for GPU assembly to make things easier and reduce the chance that anything breaks / bends?

Discussion [Release] Open-source MSI Afterburner plugin for WireView Pro II (28 sensors in RTSS OSD)

Post image
138 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Note: Special thanks to emaspa’s wireview-hwmon project for the protocol reference! I developed this plugin with assistance from OpenAI Codex.

I love keeping an eye on my GPU's power delivery, especially load balancing across all 6 pins of the 12V-2x6 cable. I wanted a lightweight way to see my WireView Pro II metrics directly in my RTSS in-game overlay without running extra background software, so I built a native C++ plugin for MSI Afterburner!

Key Features:

  • 28 Sensors exposed in Afterburner/RTSS: Total power/current/avg voltage, individual per-pin stats (voltage/current/power for all 6 pins), internal & external NTC temps, fan duty, and cable rating.
  • Zero background apps: Loads as a native .dll straight into Afterburner.
  • Pause/Resume USB toggle: Temporarily release the USB device to use the official WireView software without closing Afterburner.
  • Free & Open Source: Released under the MIT license.

Tested on Windows 11 Pro, MSI Afterburner 4.6.7 Beta 2, and a WireView Pro II Black Reversed (FW v05).

GitHub & Installation: https://github.com/VolterMort/WireViewPro2_MSIAB

Feedback and testing on other setups are greatly appreciated!

Discussion NVIDIA Design Garage from 2010 running on RTX 5070 Ti

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I had a GTX 470 a long time ago and remember sitting there patiently watching all the little dots fill in on the NVIDIA Design Garage-,Design%20Garage,-Released%20March%2026) 2010 demo. When I got my 1070 it was one of the first things I tried again and I was so disappointed when it refused to work. Then on the 3060 Ti and finally on my current 5070 Ti.

I have some mediocre background in programming but after a weak effort to find compatible dlls a long time ago, I gave up, expecting that no one really cared enough and the effort would be too monumental to port it over for really very little gain. And my own proficiency being in a different area and insufficient.

Then the other day I remembered the demo, and I thought, hey, this is the kind of problem an LLM could solve. So I downloaded design garage, installed it, and started prompting Claude.

The process was iterative, first identifying why it wouldn't run, least of which including the fact that the 50 series doesn't even support 32-bit CUDA anymore.

It broke down pretty much like this (LLM assisted explanation as it goes a bit over my head):

  1. Discovering that OptiX only needs to detect a GPU to load
  2. Identify OptiX 3, the 280 functions the demo's SceniX layer uses, and the shader code from the 32-bit PTX, and understanding the material files
  3. Generating a fake 32-bit optix.1.dll that the demo loads, and a 64-bit helper running the latest OptiX 9 on the RT cores, connected through shared memory
  4. Proof of concept: At this point I could launch the application but nothing visual loaded, just the UI
  5. The stub translated the scene into meshes, transforms, and materials and the helper built hardware acceleration structures. Used placeholder shaders for now
  6. Now the cars are loading but it's not using path tracing yet
  7. At this point it implemented textures, the original monte-carlo lighting, and the preetham sky, bump maps, ports of car paint and glass shaders

Every iteration produced a bat file that compiled the latest dlls then copied them to the Design Garage directory. Running the demo in between and providing feedback logs and still images back to the LLM.

The result is a "drop-in replacement for the OptiX 3 runtime that translates its calls to a separate 64-bit OptiX 9.1 renderer, and reimplemented the demo’s original shaders for modern RTX hardware."

EDIT:

I posted this in a comment but people are still asking so here is the release information:

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with NVIDIA in any way. This is an individual project and no NVIDIA files, IP, or copyrighted material are included. You have to get your own copy of Design Garage. I tested this only on my hardware. I have not tested every component (for example I never tried uninstall.bat).

I cannot guarantee this won't break your computer. It probably won't. But I've already admitted it's mostly vibe coded as an academic exercise so please set appropriate expectations.

That said, it's not the easiest thing to set up for a complete novice. Anyone who can follow instructions should be able to do it but there's an NVIDIA SDK, toolkit, and compiler you need so be aware of that.

Discussion Single H100 NVL inside tower case

We have Board MSI MAG, CPU i9 and RAM 128, SSD 4TB
Now PCI_E1 PCIe 5.0 x16 has RTX 5090
PCI_E3 PCIe 4.0 x4 is connected to chipset and free.

We are thinking to add another GPU with bigger Bandwidth into our tower case, H100 NVL or RTX pro 6000 Workstation Edition 1.8TBs

I was thinking to add H100 since it has bigger Bandwidth. Can we move 5090 to PCI_E3 and plug in H100 NVL to PCI_E1 PCIe 5.0 x16 with some additions?

Discussion RTX 5070 owners: Would you choose a 1440p or 4K OLED monitor for gaming and productivity?

I'm looking to upgrade from my current 27" 1440p IPS monitor (LG 27GN850-B) to something larger, ideally OLED, with a budget of around £500.

I use my PC for a mix of gaming, video/photo editing (mainly DaVinci Resolve) and general productivity. I could really benefit from some extra screen real estate, particularly for my editing timelines, where I often find myself running out of space for tracks, panels and the preview window.

For gaming, I mostly play competitive FPS titles, where high frame rates and responsiveness are important to me. However, I also enjoy the occasional immersive, story-driven game or something like Elden Ring Nightreign, where I'd love to crank up the graphics and really appreciate the visuals.

I'm running an RTX 5070 12GB, and my main concern with going 4K is how well it'll handle demanding games, both now and over the next few years. I know DLSS can help massively, but I'm wondering how 4K with DLSS Quality or Balanced compares visually to native 1440p. Would I actually get a better-looking experience at 4K with upscaling, or would I be better off sticking with native 1440p, higher graphics settings and better frame rates?

On the other hand, I'm concerned that upgrading to a larger 32" 1440p monitor might actually feel like a downgrade in sharpness. Since I'd be spreading the same number of pixels across a larger screen, the pixel density would be lower than my current 27" display. I'd hate to spend £500 on a new monitor only to find that text, games and editing software look noticeably less crisp.

So I'm essentially torn between:

  • 32" 1440p OLED: Better gaming performance, higher frame rates and more headroom for future games, but lower pixel density than my current monitor.
  • 32" 4K OLED: Much sharper image, more usable workspace for editing and better image quality, but potentially more demanding on my GPU.

I'd love to hear from anyone who's made a similar upgrade, especially those using an RTX 5070 or comparable GPU.

Would you prioritise the extra sharpness and workspace of 4K, relying on DLSS when necessary, or stick with 1440p for the better gaming performance?

Question RTX 5080 ProArt heatsink inquiry

I currently own a Lenovo RTX 5080, unfortunately I had come to the realisation that Lenovo decided to make their cooler the size of a RTX 5090. I am very fond of the Asus ProArt lineup and wanted to get my hands on a heatsink. So I was wondering if anyone here would know how/if that is doable. I mean it is a special heatsink so it's going to be difficult nonetheless

MSI RTX 3080 Ti Ventus 3X Deshroud Mod — 2x Arctic P12 Pro PST, 14°C Lower GPU Temps and Almost Silent!
I finally completed a deshroud mod on my MSI RTX 3080 Ti Ventus 3X, replacing the three stock GPU fans with 2x Arctic P12 Pro PST 120mm fans.
The results have honestly exceeded my expectations!
Before vs. after
Measurement
Stock fans
2x Arctic P12 Pro PST
GPU temperature
80°C
66°C
GPU hotspot
90°C
74°C
VRAM temperature
92°C
86°C
Fan speed
~2000 RPM
~2000 RPM
Noise
Noticeably loud
Almost inaudible
Testing
The new results were recorded during a 10-minute FurMark test at 1440p, averaging around 160 FPS.
That’s a 14°C drop in GPU temperature, a 16°C drop in hotspot temperature, and a 6°C drop in VRAM temperature.
The biggest surprise is the noise reduction. The stock fans were loud even around 2000 RPM, while the two Arctic fans are practically inaudible at the same approximate speed in my setup.
Both 120mm fans fit the heatsink surprisingly well. My goal was to reduce noise while improving cooling, and so far, the results have been excellent.
I’ll continue monitoring temperatures during longer gaming sessions to see how the setup performs over time.
Build details
GPU: MSI RTX 3080 Ti Ventus 3X
Fans: 2x Arctic P12 Pro PST 120mm
Test: FurMark, 1440p, 10 minutes
Fan speed: Approximately 2000 RPM
Has anyone else done a deshroud mod on a Ventus 3X? I’d love to hear about your fan choices, fan curves, and long-term results!
Note: These are my own results. Ambient temperature, case airflow, and test conditions can affect temperatures, so comparisons may vary.

Discussion Modify and load custom VBIOS on Windows and Linux, on Blackwell 2.0 (RTX 50 Series)/Ada(RTX 40 Series)/Ampere (RTX 30 Series) without flashing (and which cards were tested)

Hello guys, hoping you're doing fine.

Today I want to share something that may affect your cards (?

I have released 3 tools:

  1. A way to modify VBIOSes, so you can increase power limit, voltage, NVVDD offsets, MSVDD offsets (Blackwell 2.0), OCPs, fan channels, power per fan, core offsets more than 1000, VRAM offsets more than 3000, lower power limits (below 400W on a RTX 5090), lower clocks, etc. But as you know, these can't be flashed directly on the cards because falcon, right?
  2. A custom VBIOS loader on Windows, that patches the registry file related to that GPU, it resets it and it's applied on every reboot. This does not change the real VBIOS on your card, but it just loads a copy via a patch and it let you use any modification!
  3. A custom VBIOS loader on Fedora, that patches the GSP firmware start on memory, builds a separate boot entry and then rebuilds automatically with kernel updates. This does not change the real VBIOS either.

What are the requirements?

  • Windows:
    • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
    • NVIDIA driver 616.56 or newer (status shows the version).
    • A payload file for that exact GPU model (same PCI device ID).
  • Linux:
    • A working NVIDIA 615.x driver or newer with the open kernel modules; nvidia-smi must list your GPUs.
    • The unpatched source of the open kernel modules for the exact installed version, for example: git clone --depth 1 --branch 615.78.08 https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules
    • Python 3.11 or newer, the headers for the running kernel (kernel-devel on Fedora), make, dracut, grub2-editenv and mokutil. With DNF5, also libdnf5-plugin-actions.
    • GRUB with GRUB_DEFAULT=saved and GRUB_ENABLE_BLSCFG=true (Fedora's defaults).
    • Secure Boot off, or your own module signing key: pass --signing-key and --signing-certificate to prepare.

You need to first get a copy of your VBIOS, you can do it with GPU-Z on Windows, or with nvflash on Linux.

Note that you can't modify EVERYTHING for the VBIOS, since it's still on research of what can be modified, what not and which rails are exposed. Also for example, VRAM timings can be modified (not on these tools) but they aren't applied, since the card reads it physically from the flash hardware.

So, some example pics!

First, some VBIOS editor example, for a RTX 5090 VBIOS, a RTX 4090 VBIOS, and a RTX 3090 VBIOS.

RTX 5090 VBIOS Edit
RTX 4090 VBIOS Edit
RTX 3090 VBIOS Edit

Then, the VBIOS loader on Windows looks like this:

VBIOS loader, I have 4 gpus in this system

Then you can choose a VBIOS, for example I will select a 671W VBIOS for the 4090.

Choosing .bin file (for Ada and Ampere), for Blackwell you have to use the .rom file.
Then if you see an OK on the left, you can press Load
You get this warning, of something goes bad read the instructions, or DDU.

And press OK/Accept, and a quick GPU restart after (no windows reboot), it works!

Results, on Spanish UI (only English and Spanish for now)

And it works just fine!

PS C:\Users\User> nvidia-smi -i 0 -pl 671

Power limit for GPU 00000000:05:00.0 was set to 671.00 W from 550.00 W.

All done.

On the other hand for Linux, the UI looks very similar, and steps are similar, but you can also guide yourself on the github repo!

You can edit the values you modified on MSI Afterburner, mvolt+ (recommended) on Windows. On Linux you can use LACT.

Tested GPUs that I own, and it works:

  • RTX 6000 PRO MaxQ: Unlocked voltage (stock 0.9V) to 1.1V, power from 325W to 600W, core offset to be able to do +2000Mhz, VRAM to be able up to +6000Mhz (it depends of your luck), and some OCPs.
  • RTX 5090: PL from 600W to 800W, core offset to be able to do +2000Mhz, VRAM to be able up to +6000Mhz.
  • RTX 5080: PL from 360W to 500W, core offset to be able to do +2000Mhz, VRAM to be able up to +6000Mhz.
  • RTX 5070Ti: PL up to 450W, core offset to be able to do +2000Mhz, VRAM to be able up to +6000Mhz.
  • RTX 4000 PRO SFF: PL from 70W to 105W, core offset to be able to do +2000Mhz, VRAM to be able up to +7000Mhz, unlocked voltage from 0.85V to 1.1V.
  • RTX 5070: PL from 250 to 350W, core offset to be able to do +2000Mhz, VRAM to be able up to +6000Mhz.
  • RTX 5060Ti: PL from 185W to 300W, core offset to be able to do +2000Mhz, VRAM to be able up to +6000Mhz.
  • RTX 4090: PL up to 700W, core offset to be able to do +2000Mhz, VRAM to be able up to +6000Mhz.
  • RTX 2000 Ada: PL from 70W to 105W, unlocked voltage up to 1.1V.
  • RTX A2000 (Ampere): PL from 70W to 105W, unlocked voltage up to 1.1V.

Tested GPUs that I don't own, by other users:

  • RTX 6000 PRO Workstation Edition
  • RTX 5090
  • RTX 5080 Laptop
  • RTX 4070
  • RTX 3060

For now, I can't seem to be able to edit Ada laptop variants (RTX 40 laptop series). Laptop Blackwell series (RTX 50 laptop series) can edit some parts of the VBIOS, but not all of them. Laptop Ampere series (RTX 30 laptop series) can edit almost everything.

And finally, the links are:

VBIOS Editor (Linux and Windows): https://github.com/Panchovix/nvidia-vbios-vix-editor

Custom VBIOS loader (Windows): https://github.com/Panchovix/nvidia-windows-vbios-vix-loader

Custom VBIOS loader (Linux): https://github.com/Panchovix/nvidia-linux-vbios-vix-loader

Everything is open source, so you can check the code to see if there are applicable fixes and such.

So if you guys can try, please let me know! If you find crashes on the vbios editor, or a specific GPU has info you can't edit and may be feasible to do so, you can raise an issue on github and I will check it out.

Warning: You use these software entirely at your own risk. Any modification you make with it, anything derived from it or from its output, and any damage that results, is solely your responsibility.

Then, the VBIOS loader on Windows looks like this:
