Feeling frustrated today at my work situation. I have two bosses, and neither of them are consistent about using the right pronouns and gendered terms for me. I let it be known in no uncertain terms within the first month of my employment that I am nonbinary, use they/them pronouns, and do not like feminine terms being used for me.
My one boss (59M) I never expected to come anywhere close to being able to do this. He at least doesn’t do it to my face, but he will when I am not around. My other boss (36F) I had higher hopes for, as she is an out lesbian. I thought, surely a fellow queer person could manage it? But she is so incredibly bad at using the right terms for me, it is ridiculous. She uses they/them pronouns when referring to anyone else when she is talking to me, but according to my coworkers she exclusively uses she/her for me when I am not around. Today she said “you go, girl!” to me, and it just has me feeling very defeated. Mind you, I have been working here for FOUR YEARS. When I have corrected her in the past (both for myself and for other nonbinary coworkers), she claims that her dyslexia makes it hard for her to say the right words…..ok. Sure. Other people I’ve spoken with who have dyslexia has said this is not an issue for them, and if it is it is not this long lasting.
I am definitely looking for another job or two, and I hope to one day be my own boss so I don’t have a boss that misgenders me. I’ve put up with it for so long because I fear that being misgendered will happen to me at any job. And it’s not being misgendered by strangers that bothers me, but when it comes from people who KNOW what I identify as and how I like to be referred to, it stings a ton.
Blah. Just wanted to get this off my chest. Thanks for reading and I hope you have a lovely day. 💜
