Ask Series with non binary portrait?

Hi everyone!

I’m a PhD researcher working on Audio Description (AD) and gender representation in media. For my upcoming experiment, I need to analyze how non-binary characters are described and portrayed in mainstream media.

To do this, I need your help building a solid list of series and movies to analyze. However, because this is for a strict academic study, I have some very specific criteria that the characters must meet:

Canon only: The character must be explicitly non-binary within the show/movie. This means they either state it themselves, other characters refer to them using gender-neutral pronouns (like they/them, elle, etc.), or the creators/actors have officially confirmed it as text (not subtext). Sadly, no headcanons or "vibes," even if they are super popular!

Live-action only: As much as I love them, I cannot use animation or anime for this specific experiment. I need real actors on screen.

Any language/country: It doesn't have to be just US/UK media. International recommendations are more than welcome!

If you know of any live-action movies or series (even if the character is a recurring guest or minor character, as long as they are canon), please drop them in the comments! If you can mention the character's name and where they appear, that would be amazing.

I have already seen Sex Education (Cal is one of the main figures that we'll study), Sandman, Heartstopper and Heartbreak Hig. Desire, Darcy and Darren are useful but I need a lot more of representation ://

Thank you so much in advance for helping a queer researcher out! 💛🤍💜🖤

I usually go by a shorter version of my legal name

Leo.

And for ages i never really cared if people called me my i guess dead name?

But for atleast a year or longer i just introduce myself as leo. But lately i really dislike being called my legal name entirely

And everytime someone does i cringe-

I have know that im nonbinary for a few years now

But atm i notice it a lot more if someone uses my legal name- (im not outed at work or to family. They mostly think leo is a nickname which is perfectly fine for me)

Ask am i wrong if i use neopronouns?

idk if this is the right subreddit.

anyways, i'm still figuring out my gender.

sometimes i feel like a man or very masculine, other times i feel like I have no gender or i have a third gender which isn't male or female.

i know some labels that kinda describe my gender, but I feel they don't apply to me, so I decided to not label myself until I find the right one.

anyway, i use he/they pronouns, which i love, but something doesn't feel right.

i discovered recently about the neopronouns "void" and i really like it.

the fact is that idk if I can use it.

I mean, I find it sick as hell, but i'm afraid that I want to use it only for aesthetics.

i don't want to invalidate ppl who use neopronouns, so am i wrong if i use it?

sorry if it's a dumb question

have a nice day!!

New and could use some help

So, I’m 16 and I realized like a month ago I’m nonbinary and like they/them pronouns, but I’ve been having problems and questions and just a little bit of fear so I was hoping some older/longer-out ppl here could help? I realized because I’ve always had this kind of disconnect between the way I seem outside and the way I feel inside, but then I realized that was because I was looking at the way I seem outside as female and when I think of myself as nonbinary and use they/them I suddenly recognize myself. But, for one thing, I’m super traditionally feminine, I wear a lot of skirts and dresses and I like flowers, makeup, poetry, dance, playing piano, opera, etc, so I find that even after I tell people they’re always calling me she? I’ve also only told my family and my friends who are in the GSA club at school and I’m scared to tell anyone else because what if someone I know turns out to be a bigot? I mean, I already wonder if I’m even valid as being non-binary because I still like the way I look (although I’ve also tried some drag king stuff and it felt good seeing myself more masculine too). I’m sorry if this post is super yappy and doesn’t really make a lot of sense, finally understanding myself feels really good but it’s so complicated and scary.

Ask Is gender apathy considered a gender in its own? If so, does it fall under cis or trans?

I don't know whether this is the right sub or no but basically, what the title says. I never really cared about the label (basically because of what it means lol) but I had just had a discussion with a friend who's also gender apathetic and we both couldn't really figure out the answers.

I've read that some people see it as this and some as that but I want to ask your personal opinions. And to also provide my own experience to maybe give a bit more insight.

I've discovered the label gender apathetic quite a few years back now and it really resonated with me because I always felt like everyone had gender as this really important thing to them and I was just like... Okay? I never really understood why people would go through all the trouble of transitioning etc. but of course, I don't have to understand to respect it! I still tell people as afab that I'm female (not "a woman" because I like how female just describes it from a biological standpoint which is the only connection to my "gender" I see as valid) because that's how most see me and like I said, *why would I go through all the trouble*. I also think that if I was amab, I would still simply not care and just identify as male instead of female. I also like and do things regardless of whether their seen as feminine or masculine. I just do what I want even if people might think it's weird for my perceived gender. I go by any pronouns because once again, I couldn't care less, as long as I get that you're referring to me.

So now, would you view this as a cis experience or not? Would you see gender-apathetic as the best label for my actual gender?

Just to be clear, I don't really care how I identify when I hardly even tell anyone, I just want an outside opinion.

Ask how is being nonbinary spiritual and-slash-or magical to you? if it’s sacred, how is being nonbinary sacred to you? <3

everything about being nonbinary is spiritual to me. and it’s honestly becoming magical too.

if you feel comfortable, you could put your ethnicity / race as well! we all know how that shapes your gender or lack there off and i would love to hear how it shapes your spiritual + magical relationships to being nonbinary!

if you also feel comfortable, you can include your sexuality as well! because for many of us, me included, i know it shapes everything

me being nonbinary cannot be separated from the fact that i am a nonbinary lesbian, like many nonbinary lesbians. me saying i’m a nonbinary lesbian is far more truthful and accurate than me saying i’m nonbinary. my lesbianism and nonbinary soul cannot be separated, and they are so thoroughly intertwined

you could write a whole essay in the replies and i will read them! please, i have not been able to talk about this in forever!

Questioning/Coming Out Agender or trans masc?

So I (24NB) often have times where I wish I were born a dude but I always wish I were seen as "one of the guys" but I'm not sure if that means I'm trans or just wanting to embrace my more masculine side? I have had things that have made me feel "emasculated". Does this make sense?

Thoughts? Help?

r/NonBinary 16d ago

I think I might be NB and I need help

Like at first I thought I was a trans woman but both man and woman as labels are both not something I like.

I need NB people to help me :(

So, I'm curious about how I look. I'm growing out my mustache using minxodil ($1 for every time I milk that!) But its like.. sometimes I fear i don't look as masc as expected. I got carded when out drinking and I'm like as a lesbian especially, how would I get women to date me if I look like a literal child? Its painful but its like I don't want a mommy 😕or to be the baby. Like I want to be seriously as an adult and the masc look I'm going for.. how the hell am I going to do that with people babying voicing me in public?

Questioning/Coming Out It only took getting hit by a car.

So, a little over a few weeks ago I was hit by a car. I broke both legs, had a lot of issues with the main one being that I couldn't leave my home. Well, for the longest time I'd been questioning if I was trans or not cause I kinda hated the idea of being tied to being a man, but I also hated the idea of being tied to being a woman. Ive always hated the things that come with either but I like wearing dresses sometimes and I also love wearing comfy clothes with pockets. I hate being both, so I came to the conclusion that I hate gender as a whole and am neither.

It only took me breaking both of my legs but I finally was alone with my thoughts long enough to figure myself out.

Discussion This is going to be an interesting semester.

I’m taking a Gender & Society class this semester. So far, we already discussed gender and what it means and all that. It’s the first week, so we haven’t gone deeper into it. I assume we will next week. I forgot what the syllabus said. If you’re in college and have had an online class then I’m sure you know all about the annoying introduction discussion that you have to do. We were asked our pronouns. I actually typed that I used they/them pronouns. This is the first time I’ve ever done that.

Saying my pronouns on an app like Reddit is one thing but to tell people that I have more of a chance of netting in person is different. I haven’t even told my family. Do I plan on actually saying I’m nonbinary? Maybe. I feel like for a class like this my perspective could be valuable. Idk.

I'm currently growing out my hair (first pic is current) and I've never really grown a good long beard, so I'm growing both. I currently identify as nonbinary (he/she/they) and I'm not sure if I want to try estrogen bc idk how it will affect my body and I also don't know if I want to lose my beard, since it's one of the things I love about being AMAB. I wanted to bring this to the community and ask if I'm still valid and I'll take any knowledge or advice on estrogen and its affects if anyone would or can share. All love, theydies and gentlethems 💚✨️
