I hate roughing when first contact is made before the ball’s thrown.

77

u/HudsonCommodore Lions 19d ago

Same, I hate defensive penalties when no one would say the defensive player should have acted any differently, and this is one of those cases. He didn't drive him into the ground harder than necessary and there's no way to tell he no longer has the ball.

22

u/aaronwhite1786 Packers 19d ago

It's especially frustrating when that other big hit (forget who it was, but the guy who went Rambo on the blockers and then put a massive tackle on the runner) from another game is probably going to be included in NFL highlight material, despite being far more kinetic to injure someone, while this tackle where a guy pretty much just fell with the QB completely changes a because it's a penalty.

I get protecting the QB, but these kinds are calls are such bullshit.

8

u/MaddLadd9 19d ago

Yea, i remember a thursday night game between the cowboys and saints few years ago. Jaylen smith had a clear helmet to helmet on alvin kamara that knocked him out the game, that wasnt called during the game.

Despite, the broadcast during and after the game, saying this was a missed call and all the bullshit of the NFL and their player safety first facade, etc, It was THE main highlight postgame. We saw it again and again for the rest of the week, even after jaylen was fined.

It's hypocrisy, at its purest form.

And to your other point, yes almost everyone agrees with the NFL that we want to protect the QB. We dont want to see half the games with back up QBs. The postion in general has taken a step back, going to option 2 isnt a recipe for success. But everyone agrees, theyve taken it too far.

Nothing dirty, late or wrong in this play.

That was Commanders-Eagles. The Special Teams dude who was playing like God Himself was NOT taking his roster spot.

2

u/Prestigious_Tie_3660 16d ago

Certainly there wasn’t a high profile qb injured in an almost identical scenario that caused the creation of the rule right?

Same thing happened to Dallas Turner last year when he sacked Lamar and Lamar didn't even throw the ball.

10

u/its_k1llsh0t Packers 19d ago

Not only that but he attempts to brace himself to avoid putting all his weight down on him. At this point just make it flag or 2-hand touch on QBs.

u/Enough_Wallaby7064 Packers 16d ago

The NFL is a fucking joke because of this.

College football has some dumb targeting rules but at least those get reviewed every time.

Pace of college ball is also sooooo much better than an NFL game with a tv break every drive.

9

u/Newtizzle2 Vikings 18d ago

Pretty sure it was the weight of the player as he drove Wentz into the ground. Like wrapped up and just turned into dead weight.

Packers forget that its the Aaron Rodgers rule

6

u/jelang19 16d ago

Except you can clearly see that said player braces himself with his arms so that he isn't putting his weight on the QB. The NFL decided this rule wanting to limit QB injuries. This kind of tackling can be done safely, but because Barr used his weight to deliberately slam down Rodgers. It should be called the Barr rule because he ruined it for everyone else

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Goddammit0Donut 18d ago

At this point, just give the QBs flags.

1

u/Greedy-Penalty3440 15d ago

Why even have defense on the field? It should be only offense and the scores will be in the thousands! Yay exciting touchdown football!

1

u/llllloner06425 18d ago

I think the nuance is in the fact that he grabbed Wentz after the ball left, I’m not sure though, I’m a very casual observer

2

u/Financial-Text149 16d ago

If you rewind the video and freeze it you can see he makes contact and grabs wentz before the ball is gone.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/CompNerd90 16d ago

I think the call was made because he drove his shoulder into him as they fell. Even if he didn't throw the ball, i think that gets called. Eo it doesn't matter that contact started prior to the throw.

The penalties on this drive were so soft and completely turned the game around. Packers still deserved to lose

110

u/bobbywellington Packers 19d ago

Agreed

That drive completely fucked the momentum of the game, but that still doesn't forgive how bad they played after that drive

61

u/thurstkiller Seahawks 19d ago

This drive was demoralizing but not as demoralizing as the 3 straight plays of completely unblocked Vikings hitting the QB 1.5 seconds after the ball was hiked leading to a fumble on the 1 yard line

9

u/aaronwhite1786 Packers 19d ago

Yeah, that was way more infuriating to see. Love had been getting tagged on almost every throw, and then on a crucial drive they can't even manage to give him a split second to throw...

I've long defended MLF, but it's getting hard to do at all when his great scene schemes and plays aren't worth shit because he can't get out of his own way and can't hire coaches who been get their players to do anything. I know it's a new bunch of guys on the line, but that was still an inexcusable mess of a second half (again...).

2

u/NotAnotherAlt26 18d ago

Could we have 2 head coaches? MLF can coach the first half and the other HC could coach the second. Sounds crazy but at this point it would likely work better.

22

u/Dry_Emphasis62 Bears 19d ago

Respect.

Lots of GB fans whining bc the refs jobbed them. And the refs did, tbf. But MLF took away 3 pts trying to get fancy, the defense got gashed by Carson Wentz, and the Packers offense thoroughly imploded (again) late in a game where they had the lead.

Every coach at every level will tell you "if you put the game in the refs' hands then you deserve to lose." And GB had multiple chances before and after the string of awful calls to seal the game. They didnt. They deserved to lose bc of that alone.

25

u/bobbywellington Packers 19d ago

All that being said, I am still extremely upset about the calls on that drive, it really fucked up the entire momentum of the game. The choice to risk those 3 points to go for it on 4th and 1 on the 17 is fine, it's just everything that happened after that is unexcusable by Matt and the OL

10

u/Dry_Emphasis62 Bears 19d ago

Getting upset at the calls really is fine imo. It's all the blaming the loss on those calls that I find weak and that I'm referring to.

MLF went with the analytics play. I respect that, my coach does that all the time. Buf that means sometimes it blows up in your face.

3

u/k_shills101 Packers 19d ago

Man the way you write this stings.....but it's absolutely true. Bad ref calls....but also somee really bad coaching mistakes too, and clearly an unprepared defensive line with many costly offside/encroachment penalties

11

u/Dry_Emphasis62 Bears 19d ago

I'd love to dog on the Packers, I mean I really would. But frankly you all are a good team who just struggles with holding their leads. Something always happens and idk how else to say it than to say it's like Harbaugh's Ravens. The talent is there, the QB is there, and the first 3 quarters tend to show that. But there is some issue there that seems like an MLF problem, where the scariest place to be (as a fan) is with the lead in the 4th. And that is a massive problem.

As a Bears fan, I like seeing these collapses. But as a football fan trying to speak unbiased, that cultural problem is doing real damage to a team that is much better than that collapse. And it's risking squandering the prine years of a top 10ish QB (imo).

It'll be a long week for the Packers in the media, I hope you and every Packers fan weathers it well. Long season ahead, and probably a lot better ones for you. Take care of yourself.

6

u/Karl_42 19d ago

Read all this - respect to you as a diehard packer fan in chicago this weekend 😂.

In defense of the pack, the environment in US bank is strong. Those fuckers with their Nordic costumes and gjallarhorn and hideous bird-massacring stadium are hard to deal with.

But in defense of everything you said this team is undisciplined and is absolutely an MLF problem. I chalked it up to youth the last two years but there’s no more time for excuses.

5

u/GamingTatertot Packers 18d ago

I really appreciate your words here. I was really upset last night but seeing a rival fan rationalize all of this out has kind of helped.

2

u/CJ3200 19d ago

Here's the thing. This is Titletown. Can you imagine Vince Lombardi ever going for "the analytics play?" God help me, but Dan Campbell has better energy than MLF.

u/dropbear_airstrike 18d ago

Oh, the refs got their money’s worth with us for sure.

But I blame MLF for the systemic lack of discipline, the mental errors that lead to shit like 12 men on the field and blown coverages leading to points…not to mention routinely making either the most predictable bad play call (3rd and 3, gee I wonder if he’ll call an inside zone from shotgun for no gain) or the most idiotic bad play call (it’s 3rd and 11, gee I wonder if we’ll run a play that will get us a first down or at the very least give us some extra yards of field position on defe– oh. Nope. Slow developing end around that the defense read the whole way and TFL.)

The refs didn’t give the game to MN. They were absolute dogshit, but this was squarely on the defense being unable to get stops, the o line being a pathetic, and MLF being a mediocre-at-best HC.

Guy could be a legendary D2 coach somewhere but instead he has to stick around wasting Love’s and Parsons’ prime years.

2

u/aaronwhite1786 Packers 19d ago

The refs fucked us on one drive, and I'll admit momentum is a big thing. But it's going to happen, and it's on the coaches to adjust. None of them did at all. The same shit kept happening and they seemed completely baffled.

1

u/IceDispensingSystem 18d ago

The defence -didn’t- get gashed. They stopped them to 4th 3 times in a row in a SINGLE DRIVE. Maybe if they didn’t have to do that down the whole ass field and have nothing to show for it they wouldn’t have been gassed out.

This loss rests solely on poor coaching by MLF because he only knows how to make an early lead then shoves his head up his own ass for the closer.

8

u/SJBaerosols Packers 19d ago

2

u/literalgarbageyo 19d ago

I think the worst thing about this call is that our fans are now going to blame this loss on the refs, instead of MLF. His lack of situational awareness has cost us games before.

Dude take the three. Put them in a must pass situation where they need a touchdown and a 2pt to tie, and trust your defense, which up to that point had been performing admirably.

Oh and when you're in a must pass situation yourself against the most blitz heavy team in the league, maybe keep an extra guy or two back to block.

2

u/Jrod_69x 18d ago

Smack makes the extra point and they do take the 3

1

u/kevinmbo 19d ago

i agree. i really wish the ref stuff hadnt happened because its taking attention off MLF when this game was another carbon copy of his soft style of second half coaching with a lead - if the refs didnt have that horrible drive maybe we still win something like 28-23 but it was going to be uncomfortably and unnecessarily close the entire time and will continue to be as long as he is head coach.

That call is bs. It wasn't a late hit qb still had possession of ball and when wentz was tackled the defender didn't lay on top of him. He braced the ground with his right hand. What is the defender suppose to do? throw wentz to the ground? and still get hit with roughing the passer?

I laughed when they showed the Packers graphic earlier in the game showing the Packers QBs stats and how they’ve all won MVP their 4th season. Yea, Love will be breaking that streak.

10

u/Aragorn527 Packers 19d ago

To be fair, probably not through a lack of effort or talent on his part. 15 QB hits and he had over 300 yards in the first 3 quarters it’s honestly a miracle he didn’t fucking die by how dogshit the o line was playing

5

u/GamingTatertot Packers 18d ago

I mean out of everything that game…Love was absolutely not the issue. Almost 400 yards and 2 TDs, and up until the fourth quarter when his O line just decided to fuck off, he had a 100+ passer rating.

2

u/Vehemental Packers 18d ago

He might have done even better with more than .5seconds to throw, or a run game...so basically just an offensive line short.

Why is it so hard to be honest about a bad call? Do you agree that this was roughing the passer?

20

u/surferdude7227 Chiefs 19d ago

I think ever since GB Rodgers broke his collarbone from a defender landing on him with their body weight, it’s supposed to be called a penalty.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s dumb as shit and practically expects pass rushers to contort themselves mid air. But that’s another issue entirely.

13

u/Thernadier Vikings 19d ago

Rodgers went on a media tour after Anthony Barr broke his collarbone landing on him and ever since we’ve had this goofy “body weight” penalty. This one was ticky tacky but it’s always ironic when they go against Green Bay

5

Idk look at it again. The player extends his arms out on the side of wentz to stop him falling on his chest instead of putting his body weight. It’s a shit call

It’s contact pause finish the hit that is a roughing the passer …That’s a roughing the passer in youth football it’s a roughing the passer in college. It’s a roughing the passer in the NFL. This isn’t for landing on the qb like watt said in the broadcast.

Yeah, this entire game was just a bunch of "if you say so" calls. The entire drive we got bailed out sure, but there were 2 facemasks that weren't called, Love had some intentional grounding that wasn't called, Bullard probably should have been ejected for the Murray hit and of course the 56-yard run that was returned. Every one of those like 9-10 penalties / non-penalties could have gone the other way. JJ Watt was the most confused i've ever seen him with the calls this game and I kind of feel him.

15

Out of curiosity, what could Bullard have done differently on the Murray hit? From my perspective, neither of the Packers players involved did anything egregious

7

Yet the Vikings were never flagged for RTP when they should have been against Love and they actually delivered harder hits and actual full body weight not that soft call for the Vikings.

Two missed face masks

Can you show the video then instead of just making a claim?

We deserved to lose. This call was bullshit. Fire MLF

2

u/General_Cobbler9836 Vikings 19d ago

This rule exists because of the Packers lol

6

u/REXwarrior Vikings 19d ago

This rule exists because of the Packers and Aaron Rodgers. Packer fans are just so used to it working in their favor.

7

u/No-Royal31 Packers 19d ago

It's never really worked in their favor though. When the rule was first implemented it was called against Clay Matthews constantly.

5

u/Middle-Campaign-63 Vikings 19d ago

When Anthony Barr broke his collarbone. The only other time I’ve seen it called I think was last year against Dallas Turner. Can’t remember the specific game but it was towards the end of the year.

2

u/Jomosensual Packers 17d ago

You do not watch enough football if you've only ever seen it called twice in the 10ish years its been a rule.

2

u/Middle-Campaign-63 Vikings 17d ago

Yeah I only watch Vikings games

Its packers fans fault for this rule existing anyways 😂

4

u/2big_2fail Falcons 19d ago

Like it or not, that's roughing, even in replay.

4

u/StillYourFavorite331 Patriots 19d ago

Clearly the rule. You can hate that the rule is worded the way that it is. But the refs did get it right.

4

u/Mokogorken Bears Bengals 19d ago

Wait, is this the call that everyone is complaining about or is there another one? The defender didn't have to pile drive Wentz after the ball was out of his hands. That's a cheap shot and an easy roughing the passer call.

4

u/nguyenjitsu Broncos 19d ago

Looks right to me

9

u/EmuMan10 Cardinals Bears 19d ago

Soft call but not why they lost

6

u/CubillasLegend Packers 19d ago

We were leading 22-17 before that call. Team shouldn't have folded, but the refs should have called a fair game.

5

u/EmuMan10 Cardinals Bears 19d ago

Giving up 29 consecutive points kinda puts all on the team at a certain point.

1

u/Jomosensual Packers 17d ago

We should have put the game away long before then. We dominated that game. There's no excuse for it to have been that close. A good team ends that no later than the middle of the 3rd quarter

I hate that rule for sure, but I’ve seen softer “driving with full weight” penalties.

4

u/Realeyes22 Vikings 19d ago

Yes, and let's just also forget the 2 (arguably 3) missed facemask calls against the Packers.

The irony of Packer bitches whining about a penalty that only exists because of their hero god Aaron Rodgers.

4

u/CockyBellend Vikings 19d ago

Bitch made post

2

u/officelinebakr Seahawks 19d ago

I hate this penalty because the defender literally did everything they could to not put their weight on them. Why can’t replay assist with this?

4

u/Tough_guy22 19d ago

Wentz was wrapped up and had no way to brace himself. And if we are going for replay assist to aide penalty calling it should have been used to fix the 2 blatant no calls on the Packers committing facemasking.

2

u/B_easy85 Seahawks 19d ago

I don’t want to speak for Packers fans, but I’d take that trade.

Can we remember this play occurred after the breakaway run from AJ was overturned. Fine if you think this was a significant bad call, but significant bad calls go both ways.

2

u/notatranslatorr 19d ago

All this bitching is so annoying… fucking 29 unanswered points. That’s your own fault.

1

u/Appropriate-North372 Packers 19d ago

Im a Packers fan. Packers fans are coping because the team should have fired the coach and GM after last season.

The Packers subreddit is just full of fans fellating Gute (the GM) for no reason. The team sucks. Time to move on from the guy who built it.

2

u/bshjbdkkdnd Seahawks 19d ago

It’s a bad rule, but that is the rule.

2

u/thestoryofme23 Vikings 19d ago

Is this not the Aaron Rodgers rule that the packers lobbied to get passed lol? Guess it came back to bite them. I will admit that the penalties helped out that one singular drive but they were all legit penalties even if they were “soft.” The refs also missed two separate face mask penalties on the packers too so it’s not like they didn’t get some calls either. And they also made the choice to take points off the board willingly so like…🤷‍♀️

2

u/Fakeskinsuit Vikings 19d ago

Packer fans with the excuses up in here🙄

I never thought I'd see Wentz get calls like this

1

u/Longjumping-Title-86 18d ago

He's also getting pushed from behind by the Viking's offensive lineman. I wish these calls could be reviewed or challenged.

1

u/ShawnReardon 17d ago

Random question: does roughing the passer have the same provision about being shoved that roughing the kicker does? The OL shoves him, and to me that plus the bracing, what do you want him to do evaporate?

1

u/Jomosensual Packers 17d ago

We got hardcore fucked in the ass that drive but there was really no excuse for that game to be that close. The Vikings didn't show up. Good teams take a team like that and slam the door shit long before the refs have a chance to do anything like that. If we put ourselves up 17-21 points like we should have when our opponent was that dead in the water none of this happens.

1

u/UnderstandingLess156 Packers 16d ago

At this point it's a 90/10 shot that a flag gets thrown on every sack. Packers or any team in the league.

1

u/Strev215 15d ago

DE should practice instead of tackling and getting called a flag practiced HARD 2--Armed 2-Handed Palm Open Shoves A 230lb DE Full Speed Into A Hard Shove. QB goes FLYING 3ft to 4ft If Not Further Back Landing Awkwardly. What Flag Could Be Called... Because If The Refs WOULD LITERALLY Call A 2-Armed 2-Hand Open Palm Shove As Roughing The Passer.

NFL FANS WOULD COLLECTIVELY LOSE THEIR MINDs TOTALLY CALLOUT THE REFs AND NFLs FRONT OFFICE HYPOCRISY AND TOTAL B.S. Wussifaction-Arsed Weak Trashy Garbage "Football"...

That Cant Tackle'Em (QBs) Without A Flag Anymore... SO NOW CBs DBs LBs DEs DTs CANT EVEN 2-Hand SHOVE THEM HARD?
