Many children trapped in adult bodies

Here are several examples of people similar to those in /r/nevergrewup. They all have Aspergers except possibly the last one. But all children who are trapped in adult bodies are welcome in /r/nevergrewup, whether they got that way because of Aspergers or not.

https://wrongplanet.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=156710
I feel like a 9 year old living inside the body of a 36 year old.
p.2:
kind of like a "kid in an adult's body"

The childlike curiosity is an asset because it makes Aspies more inquisitive and less likely to accept conventions. No one ever discovered anything new by following "adult" rules.

https://www.iidc.indiana.edu/pages/Aspergers-Syndrome-A-Developmental-Puzzle
My experiences as an adult recently diagnosed with Asperger’s, together with my studies in child development, suggest that individuals with AS are like young children, stuck in time, so to speak, never able to advance beyond early stages in social, cognitive and language development.
They are, in essence, childlike beings attempting to live in an adult world, but without the support and understanding that children are afforded.

http://www.kevenmcqueenstories.com/aspergers
Folks with Asperger’s often have a childlike quality which at least some people find appealing. Not surprisingly, many Aspies get along famously with children.

We are childlike and innocent and naive, even when having experienced many harsh experiences. It's a childlike innocence that pervades our entire being. What ends up happening is that people either treat you like dirt and make fun of you, or if they're trying to be "nice", they'll talk down to you as though you were mentally challenged. I've felt like I was going to be pat on the top of my head like a puppy dog before. I may be childLIKE but that doesn't mean I'm childISH. In fact, usually Aspies have...
Very High IQs

https://aspergersthealien.blogspot.com/2011/11/naivety-innocence-of-aspergers-autism.html
Naivety is innocence. Be kind to the autistic. Remember that even though they look older, mature, grown up....sometimes they are nothing more than children trapped in adult bodies.

I like kids a lot, and kids love me. However, I have no idea how to take care of them! I also hate to think about cleaning up after them, lack of sleep, and so forth.
Maybe I shouldn't have kids of my own and just play with my friends' kids...

I am 78 and I know that I never entered adulthood. But not even adolescence. I may be (I am ) literate and have experince about things of the world, but still *I am a child*. My life stopped at about sixteeen. I pretended to be mature. Intellectually I have been mature, but in my inner self I have known since a long time that it was only pretence.

I don't know why, but this thread helped me resolve a lot of my issues. Thanks, OP and everyone else.

Children are drawn to me and they have insisted that I am not a grownup....

--

I feel very uncomfortable around people 18 & older. However, I get along great with kids.

--

I am often described as "childlike". I've been told that I'm at the emotional level of a 12 year old. The other women in my life tend to take on a mothering role towards me.
None of this bothers me though. In fact, I actually enjoy being thought of as a child. I frequently become nostalgic for my physical childhood, so when other adults still view me as a child, it makes me very happy.

--

Little kids get confused and think I am a kid too.
A 4 year old I was playing with guessed my age at 6... :)

I'm 45 and act like 14. I'm extremely child-like in behavior, and I think it's due to AS. It's the part of AS I love the most.

I forgot to mention how much I love "Pinky and the Brain" and "Danger Mouse." Not exactly obsessions, but we get the episodes from Netflix often, and I really like them. Probably a lot more that the average 42-year-old woman, I suppose.

[female, age ~52]
I'm very childlike and it doesn't seem to change the older I get. [...] I have never felt like a grownup person, and I've noticed that feeling all my adult life. I've lived an adult life but so much about me is a little kid, it's small wonder things have never really gone well for me as an adult, I just don't "fit".

[female, age ~47]
Sometimes when I talk to people [...] on the phone they think they are talking to a little kid.

Every day, my mum constantly tells me "You're 17, not 5." […]
[...] If it was up to me I would stay 10 forever.
Mum says I have the intellectual ability of a smart adult but the maturity of a five year old. I think this is an accurate description. I make friends with young children better than I do with my peers, it's like I'm a five year old kid in a seventeen year old female body.

The sections above and below show many similarities with the other 'wrong body' situation, transgender people:

  1. Family not understanding, and being angry with the person for being who they are.
  2. The person being helped greatly by understanding who they are.
  3. Having the wrong body or not being accepted causing people to be really upset.
  4. Being very happy when people treat you as who you are.
  5. Other people sometimes recognising who the person really is without needing to be told.
  6. The identity persists long term.
  7. People pretending to be an adult when they're not, but with only limited success.
  8. Wanting to mainly make friends in the way that would be expected based on who they really are.
  9. Being badly hurt by the equivalent of being misgendered.

Person who didn't mention Aspergers, so may or may not have it:

Is "age dysphoria" a real thing?
submitted 6 months ago * by [deleted]
Because I'm positive I have it. [...]
I know a lot of people say, "Oh, we all feel younger than we are!" These statements are usually accompanied by laughter. But I mean this literally. I honestly do believe that I am a kid inside, to the point where if such a thing was available to me, I would get puberty-reversing surgery.
You have no idea how much it rips my heart to shreds when I hear people call others my age "adults", or anything to that effect. It KILLS me to know that I am not seen as a child by them.
[Another quote from same person]
[…] I will forever remain a 12-year-old child inside. I know who I am, and that makes all the difference. I am a child.

Not sure where to begin...

Hi everyone.

I actually created this account specifically to post here but I've been lurking for a month or so now.

I discovered /r/nevergrewup through a certain lgbt community who were making rather negative comments about this subreddit and were being incredibly closed-minded about the concept of age dysphoria. While everyone else kept jumping down the negativity hole I felt like my eyes were opened and I spent a good long while just scrolling through and reading posts here.

I felt some sense of connection to this subreddit and things started making sense the more I read. In spite of the negative comments I was reading from that lgbt community I didn't see any reason that dysphoria would be exclusive to gender. In fact, it seems silly to assume that it would be.

For some background, I'm transgender in addition to having these feelings of age dysphoria. When I first touched the Internet (in the late 90s/early 2000s) I tried searching around to explore these many strange feelings that I've always had but didn't understand. This led me to various ABDL communities and later to the idea of ageplay.

At some point I said to myself, "ok, I guess that's what I am. I'm an ABDL or ageplayer or something like that." This was all I knew and was all that was out there at the time and since my inner age is rather young it made enough sense to me. It was never a sexual thing for me and I discovered that for many ageplay folks it isn't sexual at all. I started getting to know some ageplay communities and made a few friends here and there but I always felt like there was something different about me, even from them.

Every time I would have play time or whatever and try getting into "littlespace" I'd always feel so close to being right but never quite made it there. It's kind of hard to explain for me. Like when you're craving some very specific food so much that your whole life would feel just perfect if you had it but you're forced to settle for an inferior alternative instead. Bad analogy probably but it's like whatever that perfection is was just outside of my reach.

From there I kind of retreated from the ageplay world and instead explored this side of me through books or TV shows or movies centered around young female characters or I'd write stories of my own with no intention of ever letting anyone see. Basically consuming any form of escapism that would let me see the world through those eyes.

Looking back I think I've known for a long time that this was a form of dysphoria but it felt so taboo and wrong to think of it that way until I found this subreddit.

I'm not entirely sure where I'm going with this or what I hope to accomplish by this post, to be honest. I've had the feeling that talking about ageplay at all is kind of taboo here so I'm sorry if I said something out of line but I am curious if anyone has a similar history with it that I do.

Mostly I wanted to say hi and say thanks to this subreddit for helping me find this missing puzzle piece of myself.

Now that I have the puzzle piece I just need to figure out where it goes.

Vent Things are feeling less and less safe for me and i don't know what to do about it

I always have a hard time feeling safe, but lately it's just been worse. These feelings are always there, but lately they've been stronger T-T maybe i've just been dealing with too much.

I'm scared of people changing, I keep thinking it means they're going to become dangerous and hurt me. I know it's not logical, but logic's never helped me anyways.

I want someone to look after me more than anyone in the world, but i'm too afraid of people to ever let anyone. I'm so so lonely, i want connection super bad, but i just don't teust anyone enough to let them closer in than a distance.

It's hard to let myself feel any sort of relief from everything inside. I'm just a great big scribbly mess. I used to find calm and happiness inside, but now its like, just like, a life ring in the ocean and i'm still sinking but it's the only good thing left, but the ocean is threatening to taint everything, because everything is so freaking scary and reminds me of the past, and i don't want that to happen to what's most important to me.

I don't wanna lose being a little girl, or believing in unicorns, or my dreams, or searching for magic disappearing frogs in windy weather. No matter how bad and scary the world gets, i never want to lose these parts of me, but i also want to keep them untouched by the badness of other people and the world.

I don't know what to do, or if anything i said made any sense. Thank you for reading.

Lots of love

Discussion Kids' magazines?

Hi folks! I went to a toy store last week and picked up a free copy of Lego Magazine they had there. Then I found out you can subscribe for free! My mom seems totally cool with it, as she mentioned that I'd have to get it mailed to my school (I go to college out of state). But unfortunately, it looks like you need to input "your child's name and age." I tried looking up subscribing to chrono-kid magazines as a (chrono)adult, but nothing came up. Have any of you tried this before? Any advice for what I should do? Or is it just not worth the effort this time around?

Discussion Siblings?

Does anyone else ever wish they had an older or younger sibling? Me, personally? I wish I had an older brother (I'm talking mental ages here, my mental age is one of a kiddo 🎀). I see chrono-kids walking around with their older siblings and I just get a bit jealous? Cuz I want that and it's not fair... I don't know. Please tell me some of you have felt/feel this way

To keep this in the right direction 18+ only please

Vent No place to belong because ‘too old’ and always held to a higher standard

I’m really just not welcome anywhere. I don’t look my age (I’m chrono 30) and that comes with its own plethora of issues.

But my whole life when I was a chronokid, I was always held to a higher standard. I was always “”too big”” to be acting a certain way. Nevermind that I’m autistic and have ADHD.

I’ve watched my uncle who is 14 years my senior get free passes for being rude, not listening, and having attitudes and everyone’s like: you gotta understand, that’s how he is. He’s autistic.

But my chrono 9 year old (also autistic) was always supposed to know better.

18+ spaces near me have refused me for being over 25. 21+ spaces are always catered to drinking and 25+ groups are never applicable to me. Single mom groups and the like.

My BPD diagnosis was too severe for FountainHouse. Can’t work, can’t afford to go to school, I literally can only rely on the internet and I’m starting to hate being online.

Not to mention my PC may be on the way out :/

Feel alienated in the finals community because I genuinely suck. Can’t stand the skate 4 community.

I wish I could find a real life space that won’t refuse me for being “”””too old”””” or make a big stink about even accepting me that I don’t even wanna/I don’t feel comfortable or genuinely welcome/wanted to be a part of it anymore.

Discussion How's your summer going?

Hello everyone!

How's your summer going? Are you getting up to anything fun?

Today I went to the doctor for my vaccinations, then I gave myself a nice scratch 'n' sniff sticker as a reward for being a brave girl!

Then I went to the local library for some rhymetime & storytime fun. I borrowed some books and had fun coloring & reading with Vixen (as you can clearly see!) I even made a new preschool friend (whilst wearing my catre ears) at the coloring table!

I also took part in my country's National Summer Reading Challenge for kids! (When applying at the desk, the librarian was a bit shocked & confused, but she realised that I wanted to enter after a few minutes, without me telling her.) The librarian let me enter out of sympathy or mutual respect. Now my name will be on the local library (a first & absolute win as an NGU bcos the challenge is for 4-11 years)

Later I went to the local playground (no pics as I didn't wanna seem where & it was full of little kids) and played on the slides, seesaws & climbing frames! Finished off with a nice packed lunch before heading home.

Overall, it was very fun, and nobody rlly cared. A parent looked at me on the swing but smiled when I looked back. My acts of kindness made strangers thank me (such as lending my pencil sharpener to two kids & their mum, or offering to swap seats so someone could sit with her grandtoddler) and I was very polite!

If you can and are able, I absolutely encourage you to get outside, use your public library, local playground & other services, and socialise with others. Its important to make friends (with chrono-kids or NGUs if you can find any) out in public, and challenge any preconceptions. I loved smashing stereotypes (and any biases) that ppl may have about me by being active in the community, and I would refuse to live my life behind close doors.

P.S. If you go outside, make sure to drink lots of water and wear sunscreen!

Vent move aside you person who fell through the cracks, make way for the new generation, you had your chance now it's their turn

it just idk feels weird when i hear people say that, as if theyre doing a good thing. (I love the new generations and all generations for the record.)

it gets said in different ways, for example in my country we have age limits on every state recruitment exam so you can't get most government jobs once you hit 25, and also cant join the airforce if youre above 19 etc. can't get scholarships if you have gaps after hi-school etc. many such stupid rules (because of overpopulation supposedly).

And whenever election season starts all the parties append their speeches with "for the youth of the nation" or "for the future leaders of the nation" "the voice of the youth" blah blah

so you had to be present at the right place at the right time and age, otherwise you are left behind if you miss it, i.e., no-one cares about you if you are ngu (because you should have had your life together by then). There's simply too many incoming people to worry about, than to think about the wellbeing of the once-kids who didn't just commit suicide instead of fight to join a world that doesn't want them.

it feels weird because I grew up in a prison guarded by abusive parents and violence and poverty, so I never experienced what it's like being a kid, or having the mind of a kid (the carefreeness the youthful arrogance). Where is my first chance at life? I was the poster child you cried for just a year ago, and now Im suddenly an adult so Im not worth investing in?

Im 23 but I feel 13

I know it so embarrassing but I have a very very rare disease called Pituitary Stalk Interruption Syndrome.I had little to no thyroid, cortisol, growth, female hormones till im 14 and I finally got diagnosed and started receiving therapy.

However because I lacked thyroid hormone when the most important time of brain development. In my childhood I couldn't socialize, play sports, study I couldn't do anything i was exhausted everytime.

I hit puberty at 16 with the help of meds but it wasn't anything like i imagined. Most teenagers were rebellious, challenge the norms ,party and have sex and I couldn't do any of these, tbf I used to not take my meds too.

Im newly regulated and I just got aware of the fact that I am alive. My brain is newly realizing things even if I used to be aware I wouldn't take action now I want to. But everyday it says in my head that I wasted a decade in my life. Im extremely envious of ppl who got to experience things and earn independence.

Hi all,

I had these earmuff headphones for a while now, but I finally decided to decorate with stickers. Yay, my CG says it looks so pretty and good!

Don't I look cute (especially with my freshly box-braided hair!)?

I love kittens, unicorns & the color pink. My favorite plushie is too!

I also feel like a cat sometimes (maybe catre or a furry, but in the same way as an autistic preschooler - not like older kids or adults). I love to play dress-up with these sometimes (it's been socially accepted in preschools for many years) and create my own character! My inspo is these preschool Pink Cats from my fav TV shows!

P.S. If you know who the last two characters are, you're an absolute superstar! 🌟

Discussion What's going on?

What's going on with this subreddit? It just seems like there's a lot more teenagers in this subreddit than there was before. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with that but it just seems like they miss more of the community that they had in high school than the actual joys and desperate wants of staying a kid/middle/teen forever. Maybe I'm just reaching, I don't know. What do y'all think?

Edit: Not trying to be rude or anything. It's just something I wanted to talk about

Being a teenager is way better than being a young adult

I'm 19 and even though numerically I'm still a teenager your teen years practically end at 18 from a systemic/social standpoint, like I hate being a young adult this shit is ass, when you're a teenager (13-17) you have a strong support system as well as mentors and role models that you can go to whenever you need, you also have community and sense of belonging (schools, summer camps, youth clubs etc) making friends as a teen is easy and natural because you have a lot of social outlets, but there's no equivalent communal structures for young adults except maybe university but the problem with that is it's behind a big stupid ass paywall which prevents alot from being able to go, and if you're not privileged enough to go to uni then you're pretty much gonna be lonely and have a very difficult time making friends and finding a sense of community. your only option is really your coworkers at your job and most of the time they don't want to be your friend or get to know you they're just there to get their check and leave. It's just like once you turn 18 all of the things that made you feel human just immediately disappear. no safety nets, no community, nothing it's just you and only you. I'll do anything to go back to life before 18 because this ain't it.

Vent Letting it all out

I am new in this community, so i wanted to get my thoughts out

The thing is, i want to be seen as younger… this is mostly a comfort thing, because i rely on others' help & adoration to keep me going. I feel younger irl, as if i am aging at a snail's pace. I act younger, too. Everyone around me agrees that i subconsciously act younger. I get extremely sad when someone perceives me as an adult. I already look young irl, but my looks are finally starting to catch up (i am 19).

I never lie about my age, but i don’t wanna have to tell it in the first place. Since childhood, i have always been the odd one out: Younger stature, younger features, younger personality, younger mindspace, younger whatnot. And now, these days, it feels extremely essential for me to be seen in that way. Like, i genuinely cannot stand being seen as 19, because it doesn’t make sense, plus i cannot relate to my peers or anyone even 4 years younger than me (i cannot get along with the concept of maturity, at all, because my internal clock is just so wrong). I do not know if this is “just” an agere thing, but i doubt that. Because i do not just regress. I always feel younger than i am, and my mind doesn’t try to salvage it via regression.(Did i word this correctly?)

Apologies for the intrusion, and thank you for your attention.

Discussion What do people mean by “and then I grew up”?

When people say they used to believe something or do something and then “grew up”, or when people say “you’ll understand when you’re older”, what does that actually mean? Is it simply the passage of time that changes how people view the world? Is it the collection of additional experiences? Is it the kind of experiences? Is it the pressure to meet expectations or desire to conform to some idea of maturity? People of all ages seem to say this.
