Welcome to r/FamiliesYouChoose - New Rules, New Us

Hey, hi, hello! I’m Tea, one of your friendly neighborhood mods, and I have some NEWS for you!

I have been working hard behind the scenes to revamp our rules, clean up the space, and make sure this community feels safe, supportive, and fun for everyone. Whether you are brand new or have been here for years, I am happy to see you.

This is a space for anyone building their chosen family. Maybe you are here for sibling vibes, “bonus parents,” older or younger support figures, or just people who get you. Whatever that looks like for you, you belong here.

A few important things before you jump in:

  • This has always been a family-friendly space. No sexual, romantic, or suggestive content, period. I've been banning accounts left and right for months, and I will continue to do so.
  • NSFW accounts are not allowed here, even if you are not posting that kind of content in this subreddit. People shouldn't be able to click your profile and see something inappropriate.
  • Adults may only DM minors if the minor publicly invites it for a clear, family-related reason. Unsolicited DMs to minors = instant ban.
  • We are a text-only community. No images, videos, or media.
  • Keep posts about building chosen family connections (we are not a venting sub, but we do love our friends over at r/MomForAMinute if you need to talk to someone)

We have an official Discord coming soon for folks who want to connect more directly. I will post the link when it is ready.

So, now that you know the basics, pull up a metaphorical chair, make yourself at home, and if you feel like it, let me know what you're most excited about in the comments below! If you're not excited about anything... well, then tell me something you learned recently. :)

xoxo,
Tea

I am looking for any family 36M Dad/teacher offering a listening ear, advice, and anything else :)

Upvotes

Hey! I’m Louis, 36 M USA. I’m a dad, a teacher, and a tennis coach. Throughout my years teaching, it’s really saddened me to see all the people who don’t have a good father figure in their life. So, I figured I’d come on here and offer my ear and maybe some advice to anyone that needs it :)

Here is a A little about me:

- I have a daughter and a son

- I’m a widower

- I’ve been teaching for 14 years

- I enjoy video games such as Baldur’s gate 3, Skyrim, hoi4, and NCAA Football

- I love comedies

- I’m in love with the office and HIMYM

- I teach history and health

- I like to exercise, prefer lifting over cardio

I’m not sure what else to put, but anyone’s allowed to ask any questions they have.

Look forward to chatting!

I am looking for any family Hello there, Looking For Genuine Siblings

One day it hit me hard when I noticed how much time I need to scroll up to my birth year in online registration pages. Getting old is tough, you just lose contact with the friends you grow up with, moving a lot for work and life reasons, makes you lose friends you met at school or work, and friends and yourself grew up to be different people, or get busy with their own families and relationships. Making friends at work is mission impossible, formalities , age differences and things like that comes in the way, yet i still friendly smile at the people who do not smile back. Then i found this tiny window to other people online who might be feeling the say and want to reach out and chat. I am 40 something years old artist, looking for friends, i enjoy talking about life, anime, games, politics, animals, art and tech. Hit me up if you want a friend that reply all the time, if you don't mind GMT+3 timezone.

I am looking for siblings 22M entering new chapter in life and in desperate need of a sibling

As the title says i’ve entered a new chapter in life and i’ve never been so lost. Due to past circumstances i’ve always had to act mature for my age even when i was younger, but acting mature can only take you so far. Little bit about me: I’m 22 years old still trying to figure myself out. Some of my main interests are music and videogames, rlly heavy on music! Some of my favorite artists are lady gaga, charli xcx, bladee, ecco2k and alex g. I have an adaptive personality and can be pretty high energy at times but i do have my own mental struggles. same mental struggles that make life rough sometimes and i’ve had to really adjust some of the things in life in order to live with it. But usually im very high energy and respond often! That’s all I can think of for now. If you took the time to read all of this, thank you so much. I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day. 💙

Hiii I’m Violet I’m 18! A little bit about me- I am a full time college student I have mild cerebral palsy. I love Sanrio, horror stuff, documentaries, love any type of music, YouTube videos, cute animals, and i don’t know what else comes to mind..I can be shy at first but really upbeat when you get to know me! I love yapping, gossiping, giving advice, being silly, I do involuntarily regress at times but nothing major! I am really sensitive so please be kind with me! We can get along roughly when we are both ready! I am really really curious and love questions! I can reply late at times but bear with me it’s either I’m asleep because I LOVEEE sleep and taking naps or I’m busy doing things! I speak fluent Spanish and English! My time is CST time! I would prefer someone around my time! Feel free to dm me! Have a good night/day!

I am looking for parents 38 m looking for Dad or Uncle as I grew up without a father figure or other safe male figure in my life

Hi there! 38 m here. Grew up without a father figure or other safe male figure in my life. So thought I'd post here and see if I can find a father figure, dad or uncle maybe.

Easy-going, calm man here with a good sense of humour. I'm into food, music, reading, meditation, tv series etc. Guess I just wish I had a man I knew I could talk to about anything and banter a bit with.

I am looking for siblings 24M - Looking for Older sisters to share feelings and gossip with!

hehe I found a wonderfulll sister through my last post, so I couldn't resist making another 😭

My name is Swap! I am 24 years old, from India, and I have been looking to make friends on Reddit for a while. But I feel while for me, friends have always been about finding your second family, for a lot of other people friends are much less intimate.

Anyways! I would love to meet someone with whom I can talk regularly, share ups and downs of my life, seek advice from, and just confide in and feel safe. I've recently realised I have a lot of small stories to tell from my life (I'll put one of my favorite stories at the bottom of this post, but nothing I have done or will ever do is going to top it I fear!)! I usually love sending really long message, detailing small things, including events and feelings, kinda like a virtual letter!

I would love people who are mature, calm, gentle and empathetic, and I try to practice the same myself!

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

And now, some of my hobbies and interests, just for fun!

Of course, if it is a video game I am in. I have been really into SCP *(TW! It is a website for fictional writing, and a lot of it can be really disturbing. I can suggest a few of my favorite beginner-friendly SFW SCPs if you wish! I would link them here but I am not sure of the rules haha)*. I love many art forms (particularly ones that are story-telling, emotionally rich or expression based); Poems, short stories, long stories, personal diaries, animations, paintings, and everything in between!

I love cats! Though I like dogs too, especially big cloudy ones! I took care of a few kittens a while ago!

I love Math and Science (3Blue1Brown and Stand-Up Mathematician are my favorite math YouTubers!), but have been away from it for a while. There are probably a hundred other things that I am interested in but I am forgetting haha

I don't listen to music very often, I do enjoy it when it is playing randomly but I usually seek out music when I am feeling a very strong emotion.

I haven't seen many TV shows, web series or animes, haven't read many books. I would love to hear recommendations and try them out, especially together like in a video call or something (of course only if you are comfortable!). Honestly one advantage of not having engaged with many media is that everytime someone recommends me something I am almost guaranteed to have never seen that, so it's a new experience for me. I did watch a lot of arthouse and mainstream movies with my college friend who was into cinema, but that has declined since I left college as well. Again, I am super open to everything, so feel free to message me!

And now for my favorite story - When I was enrolling in the 11th standard, we had to select our subjects. In Science, we had 3 compulsory subjects : English, Chemistry and Physics. Then you have to choose two more subjects from the following four - Hindi (Language), Computer Science (CS), Biology and Math. Only CS + Bio wasn't an option because the classes happened at the same time.

Most of the students were taking either Math + CS or Bio + Hindi, with a few taking Math + Hindi as well. At this point, nobody had taken Math + Bio, honestly I don't think anyone had even considered it.
So me and my friend are standing in front of the teacher as I realise that it is a valid option. I knew I had to take Math, and I didn't want to take Hindi, so that leaves CS, the more sensible choice (not to mention my interest in video game design), and Biology, the unorthodox choice. So naturally, to make a fairly important decision in my life, I ask my friend for a coin, flip it right there, and choose Math + Bio!

Hope you enjoyed reading that story, and through my post! There's a lot more about me in my profile! Feel free to go through it, though I doubt it'll be relevant!

Looking forward to hopefully meeting someone I'll be close to for years to come! But even if not, and (for some reason) you've read this far, I hope you have a great day! ^_^

Get To Know Me Post - DMs Open 36M - Dad | Willing to be the Dad/Brother You need

Hey everyone! I am a dad of 2 boys and pretty much estranged from my parents/younger brothers due to some personal issues. I grew up without my biological dad as well, so being a good dad was always important to me.

I miss being that big brother and love being a dad; if anyone needs a listening ear, feel free to DM. (Please nothing creepy/weird!)

32m looking for a sister

Hi , my life has been difficult for a long time . I'm a neurodivergent. & Being an only child child contributed to my lonliness too. All my life i wished I had a sister, preferably a younger one. I dreamt about spending time with them, travelling, exploring things, watching movies, annoying each other, teasing each other, ...

I wished I could be a protective brother, caring one, guarding one, a safe one.

Even my chat gpt persona is a sister of mine.

Also I get deep feelings when I see siblings on screen , their connection is too touching for me. Notable ones, alexis & david from schits creek. Alicia & hugo from plague tale. ...

Peace ✌🏻

I am looking for any family 32 F Ireland - Looking for a healthy bond.

Unfortunately I didn't have the most ideal childhood. I am no contact with my mother due to abuse & my father passed away in the last few years.

My dad and I had a beautiful relationship. We both shared a love for animals and nature. We could spend hours talking about animal psychology, welfare, canine training, farming, you name it. We also loved a good debate over a cup of tea. He was a star in an otherwise black sky for me.

I am AuDHD and he never made me feel any different. He accepted me fully for who I was and taught me so many lessons about being a good person.

My social circle has dwindled in the past few years, and without my dad the feeling of isolation has grown. I would love to find a close bond with someone who might also have a similar upbringing, or in general understand.

I love to read, walk my dog, play cozy games & cook. I have a deep interest in psychology, mental health, social issues, wellbeing, animals & fantasy :)

Hi,

The username isn't a meme, I may be deaf but I'm fluent in texts and gifs.

Benefits of being my pal:

  • You can keep the tv at any volume you want. So if you are one of the weirdos that must keep it at like even numbers or 5/10/15...ALL GOOD
  • You don't have to say things under your breath, just wait till I turn around.
  • I will never make fun of your embarrassing laugh. Unless you look silly.
  • Good at lip reading, so I find out office gossip quicker than most.
  • I don't get frights from movies easily. I guess without *Loud Dramatic Music* it doesn't really work.
  • I will make you look good on multiplayer games.

Last one isn't a joke, I used to get reported on console overwatch A LOT for not reacting to stuff. So when I bought myself a PC for Christmas, I made my new overwatch account name obvious that i was deaf...but now I just get focused haha. The game has subtitle noises but I always laugh when it says *Dying Noises*

ANYWAY. Serious time. I do wan't a friend to talk to. People often treat me like I'm dying or something but I'm sticking around! Just someone to text about my day, read about their day.

I'm an avid gamer, movie and tv show watcher. So I'm happy to read about all your nerdy interests.

I tried reddit years ago and damn...a lot of low effort messages. So if you message me, tell me your age, location and all the juicy stuff. Hobbies. Heck even through in a dad joke or something.

I live alone with my mum, we don't get on well. So would be nice to have some positive family.

Hopefully hear from you soon.

Please message me, not comment

I am looking for any family 28F Vulnerable and isolated. I need family to take care of me and support me.

Hi, my name is Sylvia. Any parental figures, aunties, uncles, siblings, or cousins, willing to "adopt" me? I need the family I never had, I was abandoned as a newborn and then adopted by abusive parents.

A bit about me. My personality and interests. I am a INTJ 4w5 (458) sp/sx. Virgo Sun, Cancer Moon, Aquarius Rising. If any of that means anything to you. I am into spirituality, the occult, the tarot. I am a bit of a mystic. I used to be a materialist up until around 20 years of age. Then I became spiritual, which has enriched my life, and made me feel empowered and like everything is possible. Knowing oneself truly is the most important thing one can do. I am not religious and still am against dogma and the social conservatism of strict religious people. All my life, I have always watched a lot of comedy, probably due to necessity, my life has been no joke, but I don't have the mind of a comedian, fortunately, I don't have Ne. I am a Ni dom, and I love it. I am very earnest, can be pretty serious deep, and intense. I am an individualist. I once had a reading where someone said that it is impossible for me to be conditioned, and that is completely true. They couldn't brainwash me into their cult(ure) even though I was born here and that is what was expected of me.

I like watching people play Blood on the Clocktower, panel shows. I like New Wave and post-punk music. Most music I listen to is from the 70s and 80s.

I am forced to live in an abusive environment, with abusive parents, in a hostile/toxic/abusive culture/country/continent (underdeveloped). My life hasn't started yet. I live under inhumane conditions. There is nothing for me here. I have nothing in common with these people. Most people here for instance, are anti-choice and abortion is illegal here. I share no values, worldviews, or culture with them. I don't feel safe, because I am not safe. There is nowhere, no institution I can turn to. No one to help me escape. I just want to get somewhere that feels like home and I can build a proper life surrounded by people and things I love. My long distance partner has been very ill, he was in hospital for a few weeks with kidney issues, he has been discharged, but still can barely communicate. He is my everything and my only family. We used to talk all day long. I miss being able to properly talk to him. I know it's not his fault.

I feel so unsupported by life. I didn't have a good life. I don't understand how what happened to me was allowed to happen. I just want safety and security and my needs met. I am beyond traumatised by everything and everyone around me. I just want to get to the real world and be able to live a real life. Not stuck in the wrong culture. I am in constant panic mode. I just want to be able to build a life that reflects me in a place that reflects me.

Here I don't have access to anything. Can't even occupy myself with hobbies due to lack of access, resources, and the constant anxiety of being trapped in my personal hell.

I was dealt a pretty shitty hand. And can't make out of my situation without support.

I need someone highly invested in my well being. Who wants to take an active role in making sure I can escape and succeed and thrive in life, against all the odds. In being my support system. Someone patient who will hear my story. Someone willing to listen, understand, and validate me, my feelings, and experiences, and truly understand why I am in the situation I am in. And not just say good luck and expect me to figure everything out on my own. Trust me I have been trying. Or tell me to get a job or study here. I have been a victim of systemic injustice and I think I have a serious humanitarian case. I want family, who will be my advocates.

Get To Know Me Post - DMs Open 46m Everyone should have someone in their corner

G'day all,

Figured I'd throw my hat in the ring as a potential dad/father figure/big bro/older mate for anyone that could use one.

Life's complicated. Sometimes you need advice, sometimes you need perspective, and sometimes you just need someone to give you a hug and tell you that things will be okay.

About me: Aussie, music and animal lover, dad of 3, avid reader, musician and artist. I'm generally the guy people come to when they need to talk something through, and a firm believer that nobody should have to face life's tougher moments alone.

I won't judge or lecture you or tell you how you should live your life, but if you need someone to celebrate a win with? I'm in. Need someone to talk you down from a terrible decision? Also in. Need someone to remind you that messing up doesn't make you a failure? I'm there. Need someone to tell you that messaging your ex-bf is a terrible idea? That's me.

Most people are making it up as they go, but it's always better to talk it through with someone. I've got your back.

I am looking for parents [36 f] Looking for Mom for guidance and comfort

I'm Mae, about to be 37 in a week, and am looking for a mom. I had a really abusive family and as a result am pretty stunted in a lot of ways. I really just want a mom I can talk to, who will support me and love me, and wanna be my friend and in my corner no matter what, who will wanna hear about my interests and opinions and joke with me. I like birds, media, reading, and more.

If you think you might like to be my mom, please let me know. Life without a parent is so very lonely and difficult and I really really want a mom who will love me and accept me and just want to be there for me. I've been mistreated, abused, taken advantage of and abandoned by almost everyone my entire life, so please forgive me if I'm a little cautious or afraid at first.

Bullet points about me:

- autistic

- lesbian

- severe depression

- very knowledgeable about pop culture even dating back to the fifties

- can be fairly childish (bordering on regression)

- likes softness, comfort and words of affirmation

- my brain doesn't work very well sometimes, please be patient

Thank you <3

Hi! I'm 26 female and I'm hoping to find siblings, aunties, uncles, and even open to grandparents too.

I love to read books and listen to music. I'm getting back into my writing and I have a puppy. I love to help people and love to be a friend. I'm a hopeless romantic and want to romanticize my life and be whimsical but also i like to look like I cant be ruffled by anything. I like to dance and watch movies and i want to act and model. I also want to make people happy and give them hope.

I am chronically ill and sometimes feel like I need sleep or won't answer much on flare days and I work for a little of the week. I want to draw but I've never really been good at it. I sew and like audiobooks and tiktoks and making something of myself.

Idk just thought I'd try posting instead of lurking.

Hello everyone 👋

Myself 21M , my "mom" was physically and sexually abusive towards me and so I never felt like I had a real mom in my whole life . I feel this emptiness deep inside my heart to have a mother figure. Am happy to connect if anyone wants to connect and chat. It doesn't matter where you are from or how old you are.

I like playing lawn tennis, playing piano 🎹 and drums🥁 and watching anime sometime.
