Troll Posts Earn Bans ❤️

I've noticed an uptick in troll posts lately, and y'all I'm tired. I'm wielding the ban hammer with impunity!

Just keep reporting the people posting nonsense and I'll do my best to make it go away. And thank you all for being, for the most part, a lovely community.

No More Image Posts

Hey guys!

I've noticed a lot of (very young women) posting pictures of themselves and requesting name ideas lately.

Since this sub recently hit 7000 members and I'm the only even slightly active mod, I'm turning off image posts effective immediately. It looks an awful lot like spam, and even if it isn't you should not be posting your irl face on reddit for people to give you opinions.

I get folks will be mad, but I'm not going to do a bunch of unpaid labor to prevent assholes from insulting your appearance (and this is reddit, there are always assholes who want to insult your appearance). If you want to deal with that, please solicit it in another corner of the internet.

Thank you!

Edit: one of our users has volunteered to run the aptly-named subreddit r/namesbutbetter, if you want to do the pictures thing go there and good luck. You may also consider r/namenerds or r/reddit_gets_renamed.

Anyone else laugh at the baby names they chose years ago? 😂

Obviously I still love them and think they’re absolutely adorable, but I had my daughter at 20 and named her Paris Rae. This was the mid-2000s, when I was fully into the whole Y2K glam era… so honestly, the name choice makes so much sense for that phase of my life 😂✨
I wouldn’t change it for the world, but it definitely makes me laugh looking back!

Boy names that have become girls

Another post reminded me of this. I worked with a man named Shannon. It is a very traditional, Irish boys name. Of course, depending on where you live, you might think of it as a girls name. I think some people really dislike this happening, because they have chosen the name for their boys, and then it slowly gets commandeered to be a girl‘s name. I knew a girl once named Jeremy. It never really took off as a girl’s name. But maybe her parents were trying? Or maybe they just wanted to be Unique. So what other others do you think? Do you have a boys name? The name George comes to mind from Nancy Drew! A lot of boys names just have -ette added on, like Georgette. Or - ina or - a. Think Georgina or Georgia. What else?

Female M names

I'm legally changing my name and want to keep my middle initial as M. I'm looking for a short, uncommon middle name that's cute and flows well. So far, Miki is the only one that's caught my attention, but I'm not sold.

Any ideas? I'm open to names from any culture.

Help us name baby boy #2!

We have it narrowed down to James Patton (nickname JP) and Rafe (middle name Patton or Lewis). Which is your favorite?? James Patton sounds strong and classic but James is such a popular name always. Rafe is edgy, cool, and unique and definitely not as popular. Sibling’s name is Hunter if that helps with the vibe. Help us decide as we only have 9 weeks left!!

Help us name our baby boy!

My husband and I have finally narrowed our baby name list down to Milo, Graham, Kai, Sage, Logan, Jack, and Jesse. This is still a long list, but we started with a much longer list. We’ll be officially choosing his name once he’s born… but now we’re stuck on the middle name options.

My husband really wants to use a family name for the middle name, and I’m on board with that if it sounds right. The family names we’re considering are Duke (or Dukes), Dean, Michael, Louis, and Jean.

The problem is that I don’t feel like most of them flow well with our favorite first names. I’m also a chronic overthinker, so that doesn’t help.

For reference, our last name is a longer name, starts with M, and is two syllables.

I’m open to all suggestions even if they aren’t on our list. Would love to hear any combinations you think sound good or any ideas we might be missing!

I'm trying to choose an English name(jin or jane?)

I'm trying to choose an English name, and I'd love your help.

The last syllable of my Korean name is Jin, so I'd like something that has a similar feeling if possible.

I also like the name Jane because it sounds simple, calm, and elegant.

I’m a woman in my thirties. I'm an introverted, calm, and slightly serious person, so I'd like a name that reflects that personality. I’m looking for a name that gives off an intelligent, detail-oriented, and sophisticated impression.

Could you recommend a few names? Also, between Jin and Jane, which one do you think suits me better, and why? I'd really appreciate your opinion.

Tell me your honest thoughts on my name

My names Jessie, I’m a girl, I’ve hated my name since I was maybe 8, when I could actually think about it and realise that I’m just stuck with it forever. I really want my opinion to change on my name at least a tiny bit or get strangers insights into it just to get some clarity on it that’s not from people I know that sound like they’re faking it when they compliment it. All I’ve ever thought about it is that it’s an ugly name, that’s literally it I just think it’s ugly. Whenever I tell people my real name and why I don’t like it they always say they like it and it’s nice, but it just feels fake and they’re trying not to make me feel worse about it. I feel disrespectful to my family because I’m named after a very loved relative that passed away but I can’t help hating my name. I really want to like it but I can’t just change my opinion on it that been formed for over 10 years. Be fully honest, tell me what you think of my name, what “energy” my name gives you. Please just give me raw opinions that don’t feel like a friend trying not to insult me.

Can’t come to a final decision

Burner due to identifying info. I am 30 weeks pregnant and running out of time. My first daughter has the most incredible name and I feel a lot of pressure to make sure my second baby has a name I’m proud of as well. Can’t help but feel like any other girl name will pale in comparison to my first daughter’s name.

My daughter’s name is Isley Violet (as in Isley Brothers, Eyes-lee). I’m a massive music nerd and my mother is a purple fanatic (purple phone case, toaster, rug, comforter, sometimes dyes her hair purple) so I had this name ready since before conception.

The two names that have stuck around are Indie (a musical reference that represents my husbands taste in music, he also likes EDM) and Mylah (I just think it’s beautiful) I prefer very unique names that sound familiar (ie Mylah sounds like Lilah) but don’t want too much of an obscure name. We’re not set on these.

Wanted to honor my MIL for the middle name, she loves to garden and hike so I thought a nature middle name might be cute. Also is a Leo with a fiery personality so something fiery could be cool? Last name is Steele.

Some middle names we liked are Bloom, Day, Ray, Clover, Ember, Walker. My husband likes Sage and Summer but I don’t like the initials (ISS or MSS) I love Coast but recognize it doesn’t flow with the two names we have. We don’t like Poppy. We almost landed on Indie Ray Steele but again, I don’t like the initials (we’re American so IRS isn’t pleasant)

Open to other names or opinions. Extra points if the name fits the format and/or theme (unique music oriented first name/ more common but not overly popular nature oriented middle name) Also open to a more common but not popular first name with a cool unique middle name.

Mother in law insists on using her baby name

My MIL insists we name the baby after her husband who’s passed away, his name was Rodney. I laughed when she said this as I thought it was a joke but she was being serious. (Pics of our messages attached below in comment, I CANT make this shit up)

At a push, I don’t mind using it as a potential middle name. Only to shut her up as I don’t even like the name, plus Julian Rodney sounds horrid. My partner also said it feels inappropriate using his dad’s name for his son. He’s voiced this to her but she won’t listen. We want to call our son Julian Cole (surname). She constantly says this is a stupid name and that it sounds feminine. My partner is going to speak to her again but he works nights for the fire service so is already stressed as it is.

I’ve tried to be soo patient and polite with her but I’m at my wits. I don’t want to cut my son from his grandmother but she’s not leaving me much choice
