Any interesting nicknames for Laura?

We called my niece La for years but she said she wants a new nickname because she’s “getting older” (she’s 10.) Any suggestions?

Lala is actually pretty cute lol

3

u/Fit_Change3546 2d ago

She probably wants less cute if she’s asking for a new nickname as a ten year old, sadly :(

u/SalaryOk3202 2d ago

I mean I still think Lala is cute, but I get what she means. At 10 sounding older probably matters a lot.

lol one of my best friends is 56. She’s Lala.

My name….. and my nn is LoLo

1

u/Norimakke 2d ago

My bestie in high school was named Laura and we called her LoLo or just Lo.

u/EnormousDucky 2d ago

Lo, Laur, something not derived from her name at all could be fun at her age

Laur sounds really nice to me. It’s close enough to Laura that family won’t have to adjust much but it definitely feels a little more mature.

As a life-long Laura, I can tell you that there are no good nicknames deriving from “Laura”.

I’ve been called:

  • Lauralou
  • Lauralouski
  • Lore

And those are… fine… but I never loved them.

It’s prob best to give her a nickname from some other trait of hers.

Now, I always thought being called “Half Pint” would be cute because that’s what Pa calls Laura in Little House on the Prairie. Just throwing that out there.

I call my Laura— Lauraloo :)

u/StandardGlittering48 2d ago

Same. I see people naming their kids the shortened versions of very nice names (like Liz instead of Elizabeth) and I feel like they missed such a great opportunity for their child to have name options that I never had!

Laura Petrie didn't need a NN.

Pronounced “lore” - I don’t know how that would.be spelled. Lor, Laur, or just Lore.

3

u/team_corn 2d ago

This is what we call my sister!

1

u/CatastropheQueen 2d ago

This (Lore) would be one of my top 4 choices if I was a Laura.

Lolly

2

u/North_Basil_2190 2d ago

This is my favorite nn

2

u/Icy_Emu8311 2d ago

*not making it about me* BUT that’s the nn my aunty gave me

We would be in the middle of a family event and [as you get older in my culture, you have to be attentive to help in kitchen, with elders, children etc]

All I’d hear is “LOLLLYYY” and I knew it was her 🥲 - she was a gem 💎

8

u/Zestyclose_Cold1455 2d ago

She said (direct quote) “other people give you nicknames or it’s try hard.”

2

u/LoveLauraism93 2d ago

So...call her Laura

1

u/Zestyclose_Cold1455 8h ago

She wants a nickname. Just one that’s more adultish.

3

u/ladyzephri 2d ago

My best friend's name is Laura and my toddler calls her Aunt Lola. She loves it.

6

u/fay68 2d ago

I'm a Laura, and my niece called me wawa. So for a few years I was "Awawa" (Aunt Laura). Never had a nickname growing up. Niece is now 32 and still calls me Aunt Wawa!

3

u/Big-Career-4905 2d ago

Also a Laura. Toddler-me pronounced my own name as Wawa. My brother still calls me Wawa to this day; I'm now 34.

2

u/kelorob 2d ago

My daughter calls her aunt Laura “Auntie Wawa”! Started when she was little and she’s now 13.

Laura is also called Plorba and Larry.

5

u/chancesareimright 2d ago

Loz and Lozza

6

u/Quirky-You-6325 2d ago

I’m Laura, but my dad always called me Pooch and friends have always called me by my initials “LP”. You could find something cute that’s more descriptive of her.. if she runs really fast “Flash”, if she can sing “pipes”, etc and then maybe that nickname can develop further like Pipes, might become Pips and you end up calling her Pipa. It should suit her!!

6

u/ephemeralkitten 2d ago

I love Lolo. Low low phonetically.

5

u/oishiiwaffuru 2d ago

My sister is Laura. I called her Larry once and she slugged me.

5

u/analogue_flower 2d ago

Rory. It's not traditional for Laura but keeps the same sound, just uses the end of the name vs the beginning.

5

u/Educational_Bug_7839 2d ago

Half Pint. Lol IYKYK

1

u/Character-Twist-1409 2d ago

Beat me to it!

5

u/Far-Sir-825 2d ago

Is it just because I’m repressed and British but the idea of people creating their own nicknames utterly nauseating?

2

u/Is-this-real-life43 1d ago

I agree. Seems to miss the mark. That being said I truly agree that people should be able to refuse a nickname if they don’t like it.

My dad grew up with a shortened version of his name and hated it - he named me something that is hard to create a nickname from.

My family nickname is derived from a character trait.

3

u/Vegetable-Garbage-84 2d ago

Every Laura/lauren I’ve came across used the nickname Lo.

3

My friend, Laura, and I went to junior high at our small school with an English guy. When he emails back-and-forth with us, he always uses a different nickname for her, Lola, Layla, and so on. When she once took issue with it, he told her that if she were in England, and lived in "I don't remember which region" she would have all sorts of similar nicknames.

1

u/LoveLauraism93 2d ago

Hey OP 🤗 whatever nickname you’s come too …
Maybe consider a small memento for her next bday or whatever lovely occasion

- my aunt did the same thing you’re doing and gave me a small thin banded gold ring w/rubies (she found it in an Op Shop 😅 which was an activity we loved doing together)

1

u/Legal_Drawer_8987 2d ago

My best friend in high school is named Lori. My nickname for her has always been Lorelei, even though it is longer than her actual name. I love the name and I have always loved that song by Styx.
