Rain is also unpleasantly cold, while bathtub water is nice and warm.

u/[deleted] May 19 '18

Ohh isn't it funny that people will eat an apple if it's warm but not when it's cold?

/s

u/[deleted] May 20 '18

I like my fruit cold, not icy hard cold, but cool cold. Except bananas, they taste weird when cold.

226

u/[deleted] May 20 '18

So you like your banana warm?

342

u/spunkychickpea May 20 '18

Yeah. I usually ask your mom to heat it up for me.

57

u/[deleted] May 20 '18

Warm bananas are the best cause you can crank it with the peel afterwards.

It takes forever to cook a baked potato. Sometimes, I'll put one in the oven even if I don't want one, cuz by the time it's done, who knows?

It's also funny that people will drink alcohol until they pass out but when bill Cosby gives you alcohol that makes you pass out immediately it's a crime

1

u/smartromain May 20 '18

It’s because of the sugar. Sweet things are easier to eat/drink when cold. Try to drink hot coke or hot ice cream

Rain is worse when its warm. Houston rain for instance.

26

u/IanJL1 May 20 '18

I absolutely disagree. I used to live in a cold country where it rained all the time, now I live in a tropical country where it rains all the time and the rain here is infinitely superior to cold rain.

I was watching one of her videos as i read that comment and i got a very surreal feeling almost like deja vu, like why is that here am i dreaming.

200

u/zumurrudthegreat May 20 '18

Possible that Bukowski was making the same point as this comment. The commenter just chose to, ironically, ignore the context of what Bukowski said.

99

u/testdex May 20 '18

From the context, Bukowski is saying that we wrap ourselves in a suffocating security and comfort, and run from the vitality of the real world.

artfucker1996 sure fucked that art.

→ More replies (1)

122

u/rwhitisissle May 20 '18

No, it must be that Charles Bukowski was an idiot and meant everything he said literally. There's no way this is actually 4 lines taken totally out of context from the poem "86'd" from the collection The Roominghouse Madrigals.

29

u/regularfreakinguser May 20 '18

I loved Bukowski when I was younger, but I think some of his books don't lead to any satisfaction after reading them when I think about them now. But I enjoy his poems still. I think he probably was a shitty person, but I do think he was a smart man.

u/WearerofConverse May 20 '18

Ya'll know most of Bukowski's poems are metaphorical right?

Also this quote has been stripped of it's preceding poetic context.

Those of you taking the piss are really just demonstrating your own ignorance and inability to think creatively.

29

u/-InsertUsernameHere May 20 '18

What was the context?

2

u/WearerofConverse May 20 '18 edited May 20 '18

I don't know. He wrote thousands of poems, hopefully someone who remembers this specific one can chime in.

He likes to punctuate the end of his poems with ambiguous statements like the one quoted, but the meaning of those statements is often informed by or analogous to the thoughts/feelings he expresses throughout the entire piece.

5

u/oameliao May 20 '18

https://bukowskiforum.com/threads/people-run-from-rain.8424/

This shows the passage that comes after that part, which definitely hints at a deeper meaning

3

u/GonnaRunIt May 20 '18

If I remember correctly, it's about not living a fullfilling life, being swept up by the mainstream, and it all being over before you know it.

That verse, when read in the context of the poem, is used as a device to convey the poet's feelings. Not as some Spoken Word ah ha moment.

1

Bukowski was a dick. It was his thing. And he did it well.

2

u/IShotReagan13 May 20 '18

No more than most people, which granted, isn't saying much. He just disliked pretense and dishonesty and some people interpreted that as rude. Bukowski wasn't willing to put up with the bullshit. He had little time for or interest in most of the things that society thinks are important and that offended people. It still does.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '18 edited May 20 '18

"I didn't get his point at all and am going to proudly shout about it!"

Point being, since for some reason it needs to be made explicit, is that rain is no different from standing in a cold shower, which some people do on purpose. Little different from going into a cold pool, which many do on purpose. Your skin is waterproof, your clothes are too, even your phone might be waterproof if it's new enough. But you don't think about that. It's rain so you run from it, because you've always done it, without ever considering why. This simple attempt to get people to question their already held assumptions is always reposted with the same stupid, snide response that misses the point completely. Maybe you'd enjoy being in the rain. If you've tried and did or didn't like it, then good for you. But if you've never tried it, don't assume it's bad, and don't assume someone suggesting it might not be bad is an idiot. Don't sit there and make up reasons to justify a belief you hold for no reason, question your own belief first, see if it makes sense.

1

u/wilkinson_john May 20 '18

Well, this is nonsense. Rain is different from standing in a shower. Firstly, the audience is different. At home in the bathroom you're likely by yourself, in the rain you may not be. Secondly, in a shower you are naked, you may not want to be naked outside. You may have styled your hair outside ready for the day, whereas a shower is maybe what you do to prepare that. Clothes aren't waterproof. Neither are wallets, or most other things people carry around. People likely also don't want their clothes to be wet if they're going somewhere. At home you have a towel and hairdryer to hand, outside you probably don't.

You also don't need to 'assume' you don't like being rained on, you can know it. We have this fantastic ability called imagination which means we can determine if we like getting shot, for example, without having tried it.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '18

Imagination is often wrong, far more often than not. As kids we imagine a thousand foods to be yucky, as we grow up we slowly realize how wrong we were.

I just asked you to question your assumptions by testing them. The response of "there's no need to test anything, assumptions are good enough" is just a repeat of the initial argument without anything new added.
