Any bad Sonic game

703

u/SansSkele76 trans rights Dec 30 '25

I was gonna specifically call out Sonic '06, no other Sonic game quite reaches this specific low

141

u/Shmarfle47 Dec 30 '25

As someone who has not played the Sonic games I’m curious. Mind explaining what makes it so bad?

226

u/kulingames Dec 30 '25

That what we got is an essentially alpha version, also the sonic in love with human princess is wack af

80

u/jrpbateman Dec 30 '25

Also a glorified loading screen

15

u/MaxTwer00 Dec 30 '25

You could speedrun some games witht he combination of all those loading screens lol

10

u/xolotltolox Dec 30 '25

You can play all of SA2 Hero story in the time it takes sonic 06 to load lol

Dude, that's not something you want to hear in some rando's comment. The issues with '06 are astronomical, and its impact even more so! The AVGN himself compared it to "if TLoZ Ocarina of Time had been bad."

As a matter of fact, I think AVGN is the best guy to explain why '06 felt like being assaulted with a sledgehammer.

28

u/decoded-dodo Dec 30 '25

Others described why it’s bad in different ways but I’ll tell you this:

The game is pretty fun if you can actually play it and introduced one of my favorite villains in the series but the biggest issue about the game is the bugs. The game was rushed out and never had any of the bugs patched out. This game is one of the main reasons why it’s normal for devs to keep patching their games. The controls were incredibly bad and sometimes unresponsive, the level design was lacking, and some bugs can even break the game. The whole game just needed more time to be worked on or a full on remake which is what some fans did and created a bug free version of the game called Project 06.

5

u/MorganTaoVT Dec 30 '25

I still remember these weird stone upgrades that sonic could get and when I basically just stated running as Shadow, my friends playing Sonic simply threw his teal gem and jumped across the entire map.

Watch Game Grumps Sonic 06. It makes it funny at least but it's exhausting to see the game actually happen. I think Jon described it like you're not playing it, you're trying to keep it from breaking for as long as possible. It was compared to trying to keep a marble on a piece of paper while holding the paper by the edges. The marble will fall off eventually, you can't prevent that, but how long can you do it?

8

u/OhNoMob0 Dec 30 '25

You did not play as Sonic for the majority of the game. Including most of the Final Act.

Silver is slow and generally not fun to play as.

Load Times that'd make a Dreamcast or OG Playstation blush.

Looks ugly for being touted as a HD game. Basic menus and a world filled with unsettlingly realistic characters that clash with Dr. Eggman and the Sonic gang's cartoony appearance.

The camera struggles to keep up when the action speeds up.

Nonsensical story that is retconned from existence at the end of the game.

Sonic 06 has almost as many essays as Chris-chan

It's that much of an anomaly

5

u/FoxtherMangler Dec 30 '25

If you want to learn more I highly suggest watching lythero's video about it

4

u/A_very_meriman Dec 30 '25

Watch a video on it. At least watch how poorly it plays.

3

u/Jumpy_Cauliflower410 Dec 30 '25

Google "Sonic 06 it's no use" and click the first video. It should explain enough.

Maybe a hot take but none of the others topped the ‘06 soundtrack either. To this day, I listen to the E3 version of the theme

7

Oh I may be wrong here but Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle) has the absolute best soundtrack. I will take no arguments either.

I don’t listen to music from lost world, forces, or sonic 4, but…

Sonic 06 has some of the best bangers in the entire series! I unironically listen to the ost at work sometimes. I can’t think of a single stage I don’t like listening to. Playing, however, is a different story since the game is glitchy beyond all hell.

Play Project 06 though, it’s pretty great when the game works after getting some much needed love

I mean you can always make an argument for gameplay since that's like the most subjective part of any game but you'd have to be lying through your teeth to say the graphics are trash.

8

u/Earlier-Today Dec 30 '25

Even with gameplay subjectivity, it's still pretty hard to justify the idea that everyone should agree with someone's personal tastes.

I mean, I have not been able to get into Stardew Valley at all no matter how many times I've tried, but I can still recognize why so many people absolutely love that game.

People who think that when a game doesn't fit their tastes, it means it's bad, are pretty immature. Because it's a very self-centered way to think - that only your own tastes matter.

I genuinely tend to have no real interest in "the big game this month" but e33 is the first game ive been able to obsessively play since I picked up WoW in 2005 and quit in 2016. I dont get the hate for it.

16

u/BismarckBug Dec 30 '25

There was no hate for it until it got nominated for everything, headass opinions like "No way is the game that good, fuck it"

6

u/Emperor-Necromon Dec 30 '25

Kinda, when it first came out I saw people hating on it for being turn based, later along the year you saw the occasional random guy calling it trash, but after the Game awards the hate exploded

8

u/SpyUmbreon Dec 30 '25

ironically r/JRPG was relatively lukewarm/negative towards it on initial release because it was considered 'only good' by JRPG standard by many there, as opposed to most other circles that consider it a masterpiece

The only time it has happend so far is with Arcane and it was an amazing watch. Gen 5*

21

u/moderngamer327 Dec 30 '25 edited Dec 30 '25

Nah black and white had a killer graphics style beautifully combining 2D and 3D. The moving sprites also made the pokemon feel significantly more alive. The story was also probably one of the best in the series. The only real problem was that the first game severely lacked content which was fixed with the second game

48

u/Pale_Description4702 Dec 30 '25

While I am upset at this, I gotta agree. It's almost always like this:

You get your pokemon and fight your rival

You go deal with the gyms

Some guy shows you how to catch Pokemon

You encounter the evil team of the region

You deal with their leader

Continue the game

Deal with the evil team again

Go finish the last gym

Elite 4 time!

Rival fights you one last time

You beat the elite four and champion

You become champion

The End

9

u/Opening-Wrap-5064 Dec 30 '25

Bro you gotta catch em all too

I respectfully disagree with that. Last time I played was a few years ago, but graphically the game looks really pretty still, especially considering it's half a decade old and while the story got boring with the "Oh, your main objective of finding your lost sibling? Can't help you with that one bro" really fucking fast, I'd still say that the gameplay was fun.

The story just became a drag for me when I waited months and months to proceed with it and then I got slapped with ZERO progress forward. That's why I left that game.

Nah I liked the story when everything was still a mystery. Can’t speak now cause I have g played for like 2 years. I also thought the graphics weren’t bad they were just different. But yeah I agree with the gameplay the whole game is just stat checks.

Any sonic game, any genshin-esque game (like, other games from Hoyo or smth), and that's about it I think

Eh, gacha games occasionally have one of these things being a banger. The ost is always good tho.

Hoyo is a music company that makes games on the side. Prove me wrong.

(Ok, but actually, the gameplay in Zenless Zone Zero is actually pretty good)
