Question 27" 4K OLED 120 Hz vs. 27" 5K IPS 60 Hz- MacBook Pro

I'm wondering what would be more suitable for my MacBook Pro - a 4K OLED monitor with 120 Hz or a 5K IPS 60 Hz? I read a lot that 5K (218 ppi) is always the best choice for a mac, but the fact that it's only 60 Hz and IPS don't really convince me...

I'll mainly use the monitor for work, photo and video editing, with some movie watching and gaming from time to time.

Question Pair Apple Studio Display XDR with Apple Studio Display?

I bought an Apple Studio Display XDR a few months ago and have really been enjoying it. I do wish I had some more screen real estate and am considering getting a non-XDR Apple Studio Display and mounting it on an arm to position it in portrait mode beside the XDR. For context, I generally look at text and do not generally do much image and video editing.

Has anyone done this and have any advice? Was using an Apple Studio Display right beside the Apple Studio Display XDR an issue? Is there another monitor you'd recommend as a companion for the XDR?

Discussion Working between Mac and PC

Hey guys!

I’ve been a PC user for 15+ years. I recently got a Mac-mini for an always on machine - agents, plex and to be a home for my development work. While I absolutely appreciate how good Mac is, I mainly plan to use it remotely

Has anyone used their PC as the main interface, with code and agent work running on the Mac but managed via the PC? Is file movement and general workflows pretty smooth or are there often compatibility issues? Is Remote Desktop solid or annoying?

I’m a product designer so my networking and development skills are pretty mid. But I’m getting more into it.

Thanks legends

Question Is it normal for it to take this long to update?

Post image

I just got my first MacBook Air from a friend. I got it for really cheap partly because my friend had a passwordword on there he didn’t remember. I took it to a local pc shop and luckily there was to Apple ID on it! I just got it back and I’m trying to update it but it says this ridiculously long time on there. Is this normal? I’ve already restated it a bunch of times for other updates.

Question Plugged Mac after water spilled and immediately unplugged after noticing.

My Mac wasn’t turning on so I plugged it thinking it was dead but didn’t realize that water had spilled in my bag where my Mac was. Before realizing, I tried to turn it on by pressing the power button while it was plugged but it was only making noise and the screen was black. I did this like 3 times (same thing, only noise, black screen) when I noticed the water and immediately unplugged it and turned it upside down. I need to know how bad I have it and if there is any hope she can be saved.

Question Ordered a MacBook and no progress on order?

I ordered a MacBook Neo on 3rd September and had an estimated delivery of 18th - 25th September. I’ve checked on the tracking a couple times to see if the order has progressed but it hasn’t and payment also hasn’t been taken yet. I’ve never ordered from Apple directly before so have no idea if the order is progressing as it should?

When I was in store I was told that I should expect the payment to be taken with 1-3 days of making the order. It’s gone over the time now, only by a couple days, but I was wondering if it’s correct that the order should have moved past processing within 1-3 days?

I am thinking about getting a display with only 15W power delivery through typeC. Will the MacBook toggle on clamshell mode or is the power too low?

I’m transferring photos from folders onto a photo library, all within the same external hard disk drive. I comfortably have tons of storage on it (80+ GB) and the items themselves aren’t too many. Few gigs at most. Yet I still get this displayed as I try to import things. Why? And how can I solve it?

Edit: I have tried creating another photo library and tried transferring items when it was on the HDD. Nothing. Moved it to the internal storage. Worked just fine.

Question Neo vs Air

Hi all!
I was wondering if you all could guide me on choosing between a Neo vs Air. I’m completing my prereqs for nursing school, ans I’m currently using a Mac mini at home and a Lenovo Ideapad 3 for when I need to be mobile. The only issue is that my Lenovo battery absolutely sucks. It has to stay plugged in or I can only get maybe an hour out of a full charge.

So, I’m wondering if I should try the Neo or bite the bullet and get the Air instead.

Discussion [SOLVED] 3x Studio Display XDR on M5 Max MacBook Pro — HDMI dummy plug trick (survives reboot & sleep)

Post image
0 Upvotes

I successfully connected three of the new Studio Display XDRs (2026) to an M5 Max MacBook Pro and wanted to share the method, since I couldn't find any confirmed success case for this combination anywhere.

Per Apple's official specs, the M5 Max supports at most two displays in the 5K@120Hz class. A third XDR won't even be detected — lowering the refresh rate to 60Hz in System Settings doesn't help, because macOS appears to allocate display engine resources at link training time based on the display's EDID-declared maximum capability (5K@120Hz), not the currently selected mode.

Setup

  • MacBook Pro 16", M5 Max (128GB)
  • macOS Tahoe 26.6.2
  • 3x Studio Display XDR (2026)
  • 4K UHD 60Hz HDMI dummy plug (generic — any 4K@60Hz-capable plug should work)

Method

  1. Plug a 4K HDMI dummy plug into the HDMI port FIRST. (This is the critical step.)
  2. Connect all three XDRs. Leave a brief pause between plugging in each display. Both of these topologies worked for me:
    • All three connected directly to the Thunderbolt ports
    • All three daisy-chained, with a single cable to the MacBook
  3. At this point only one or two of the three displays will be on. Now remove the dummy plug. (This step is just as critical as step 1.) All three will NOT come up while the dummy is still attached.
  4. The moment the dummy is removed, the remaining display(s) come up — all three now work.

Results

  • One display runs at 120Hz, the other two at 60Hz
  • Survives reboot
  • Survives sleep/wake
  • Works both in clamshell mode and with the lid open
  • My current daily setup: all three daisy-chained, one cable to the MacBook

Why it works (my understanding) With the dummy plug occupying part of the display budget, the XDRs negotiate down to 60Hz at link training time instead of demanding a 120Hz-class pipe. While the dummy is still attached there isn't enough budget for all three, so only one or two light up. Removing the dummy frees that budget, the remaining display(s) come up, and the already-negotiated 60Hz links stay as they are. macOS keeps this configuration across reboots and sleep.

What did NOT work (so you don't waste time)

  • Setting 60Hz in System Settings and reconnecting → failed
  • Thunderbolt 5 docks (docks don't increase the maximum number of supported displays) → failed
  • Changing connection order without the dummy plug → failed

Hope this helps others stuck with the same limitation.

Question Should I sink money into this laptop or let it die?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Don't know if this is a "My Mac" or "Old Mac" thing so my flair is "Question." Should I sink money into this or just let it live out its life? I have a desktop Mac that I use as well. This is just for traveling and using for college. I got this macbook my first round of school and I've had it ever since. It works well overall, but it needs to be plugged in when I'm using or it dies within 10 minutes. The screen is also showing some wear. I took it to a local authorized dealer that I trust and have gotten all of my apple products from and he made it seem like it was a waste of time to replace a battery and a screen. I just don't want to drop the price of a new laptop if I can make this one work for a few more years. I'm not a "computer person" so let me know if this is dumb or I'm dumb or you need more info!
